Chris Cloutier is the owner of Golden Rule Auto Care in Dallas, Texas, and the founder of AutoFlow, a software solution built to improve auto repair customer communication. With a background in software engineering and firsthand experience as a shop owner, Chris recognized the communication gaps that left customers frustrated and shop teams overwhelmed. By combining his technical expertise with real-world shop operations, he developed AutoFlow to provide real-time text updates, digital inspections, and workflow tools that bring transparency and trust back to the repair process. Today, Chris helps shops across the country elevate their customer experience and efficiency by making communication as seamless as the Amazon experience. In this episode…Three out of four people say they've had a bad experience with an auto repair shop. Long waits, poor updates, and the feeling of being left in the dark have made auto repair customer communication one of the industry's biggest frustrations. But what if repair shops could deliver updates and transparency the same way Amazon keeps customers informed about their orders? That's exactly the vision Chris Cloutier had when he built AutoFlow. After running his own shops, Chris knew that poor communication wasn't about not caring, it was about being overwhelmed with tasks. Service advisors juggle scheduling, billing, and parts ordering, and communication often slips through the cracks. AutoFlow was designed to solve that by creating automated touchpoints that keep customers in the loop without adding more burden to the team.In this episode, Chris explains how AutoFlow bridges the gap between anxious customers and busy shop teams. From digital inspections to instant text updates, he shows how technology can provide reassurance, reduce unnecessary phone calls, and ultimately build trust. Improving auto repair customer communication isn't just about keeping customers happy, it's also about improving workflow efficiency, reducing stress on employees, and creating long-term loyalty.Whether you manage a single shop or a multi-location operation, this conversation will inspire you to rethink how you connect with your customers. By focusing on clarity, transparency, and consistency, Chris shows how better auto repair customer communication can transform the customer experience into something people now compare to the Amazon standard. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: [00:58] Chris Cloutier's background and introduction to the auto repair industry[02:33] The mantra behind Golden Rule Auto Care and why affirmations matter[06:14] From software engineer to shop owner: how the first repair shop started[08:31] The communication struggles that led to creating AutoFlow[10:27] Why touchpoints and customer emotions matter in repair shop communication[13:04] What poor communication costs and why customers compare shops to Domino's[15:36] The story behind AutoTextMe and why it became AutoFlow[18:20] How customers responded to AutoFlow's transparency and updates[22:25] Life outside the shop: family, soccer, and karaoke nights[25:24] Unique hiring stories and unexpected employee encounters[29:35] How key team members like Craig joined AutoFlow[31:11] Trusting your gut and final reflections on entrepreneurshipResources mentioned in this episode:Chris Cloutier on LinkedIn Autoflow WebsiteGolden Rule Auto Care WebsiteTread PartnersGain Traction Podcast on YouTubeGain Traction Podcast WebsiteMike Edge on LinkedInQuotable Moments:“Three out of four people have had a bad experience with an auto repair shop, the statistics are stacked against us.”“No employee wakes up in the morning saying, ‘I'm going to suck today.' My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Ted Aukerman, author of the book A Farmboy, a Tom Boy, Jesus Freaks, and Divine Appointments. Ted was born in Ohio and moved to Oklahoma with his parents in 1978. He lives in Muskogee, OK, with his wife, Patti, his sweetheart of 38 years. They have three children and six grandchildren. With one on the way! His first novel published in 2024, is actually four shorter works that were combined to make the Skips Sparks Anthology, A Farm Boy, a Tomboy, Jesus Freaks and Divine Appointments. Ted is a singer-songwriter writing songs for Aukrocket Records. His albums are available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and Reverbnation to name a few. Movie fans will appreciate his contributions to the soundtrack of God, Where Are You? directed by De Miller from Lazarus Filmworks. Ted produces music and podcasts in his studio, Ted's Auto Repair. His podcast Tales From The Road of Life is available on many platforms. Also, on Reverbnation is music from Skip Sparks, one of his characters and Ted's alter ego. In my book review, I stated A Farmboy, A Tomboy, Jesus Freaks, and Divine Appointments is a Christian historical fiction filled with music, laughter, hard times, and saving grace. I thoroughly enjoyed Ted's characters, all of whom had problems, issues, disappointments, and poor decisions - and yet, they also had kindness, love, determination, and a need for something more than the world seemed ready to offer. This is a meandering story where you get to meet the characters, remeet them at earlier and later points in their lives, and finally see how they all come together, each touching the other. I enjoyed the music and poetry sprinkled throughout the pages, as well as watching characters go from dark places to places filled with light and hope. If you want a book that takes you on a journey, then this is the book for you! Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound, ExpressWatch Full Video EpisodeIn our Episode Today:I've invited my friend Rui Martins to return for Part Two of our conversation on the repair shop role focused on communication. We discussed this topic in episode 22 - and I point just about every repair shop I work with to the concept of creating a reservationist position in their staff. I was introduced to this concept first with my former coach, Bob Greenwood, whom we lost in 2021 to an unexpected heart attack. I met Rui Martins when he was working with a shop that onboarded Autoflow. In the process - we quickly realized we were speaking a similar language, and shared many concepts and ideas. Today - we continue our conversation on many of those concepts as we discuss the role of a reservationist in the retention process.I highly encourage shops who value cultivating authentic, strong, and purpose filled relationships with their clients to listen to this as well as:Episode 022 on Speak Up - follow up with this episode.RRR Episode 922 - “The Role of the Reservationist in Auto Repair.”The Word of the Day:Profunditynoun: Deep insight, great depth of knowledge or thought.Thank You To Our Partners The Institute, AutoFlow, AutoLeap, Shop Dog Marketing, In-Bound, Express:The Institute at WeAreTheInstitute.com.
