Kayla Ihrig is a seasoned professional in the field of networking and career development on LinkedIn, with a rich background in freelance writing and digital nomadism. Ihrig's perspective on LinkedIn is that it is an authentic platform for making connections, helping others, and creating meaningful content. She emphasizes treating LinkedIn like a two-way conversation rather than a megaphone, and values the formation of genuine relationships through networking. Ihrig advises against a short-term mindset or setting unrealistic goals for posting frequency, instead suggesting a focus on creating quality content and engaging with others in a meaningful way. This perspective is shaped by her extensive experience working for renowned publications such as HubSpot and GoDaddy, and her journey as a digital nomad. Join Kim Thompson-Pinder and Kayla Ihrig on this episode of the Author to Authority podcast to learn more about Ihrig's journey and insights.

This tendency seems to be inherent in the lifestyle of being self-employed and frequently traveling abroad. However, it's crucial to remain mindful of what is truly necessary. Identifying the pressing issues at hand is essential. By narrowing down the focus to the current situation and addressing specific problems, I've realized the importance of not getting bogged down by the bigger picture. This approach has had a significant impact on my overall well-being. Thoughts On Breathing I make a conscious effort to be mindful of my breath, especially in moments of anxiety or when feeling overwhelmed. This practice extends to bedtime, where I consistently center my attention on my breathing. As a result, I notice my body gradually relaxing. In the past, falling asleep was a challenge for me, but now, with the incorporation of focused breathing, I find that it significantly helps the process of clearing my head before bedtime. Bullying Story I have not experienced a lot of bullies in my life. I've been very lucky in that regard. No stories come to mind there. I mean, I've experienced a lot of negativity and some name-calling in the workplace, but I guess I never classified it as bullying. I think bullying is a pretty impactful negative experience. Palliative care, and the role it plays in health value, is difficult for many people to understand because it runs so contra to the linear algorithm that is allopathic medicine. Curative care – played out in the form of surgeries, procedures, therapies, and various other medical interventions – is focused on doing something TO the patient. This becomes problematic when the patient has a terminal illness - eventually the illness will win. Nature always wins. Palliative care shifts the caregiver's paradigm from one of asking, “How can I help prevent death?” to the more appropriate question, “How do you want to live?” When caregivers ask the right question, treatment activities naturally move away from an escalation of clinical interventions that can shorten life and worsen quality of life, and move toward supportive medicine and therapy in the form of symptom-controlling medication, rehabilitation, and counseling that focuses on a patient's quality of life, symptoms, and emotional wellbeing. – things they do FOR the patient. That's not to say that curative treatments aren't appropriate or indicated – palliative care works in partnership with other specialists – but the palliative care provider plays an important role in truly helping the patient understand the nature of the disease, the treatment options, and the patient's physical ability to respond to the treatments. Inevitably, patients choose less treatment: costs decrease while quality of life increases. In this episode we speak with Dr. Tim Ihrig, Chief Medical Officer at Crossroads Hospice and Palliative Care. Dr. Ihrig is a nationally recognized thought leader in palliative care, with 1.5 million hits on his Ted Talk “What We Can Do To Die Well” and author of the important book, Palliative Care and Symptom Management. His work in multiple organizations has proven that effective palliative care aligns with the objectives of the Triple-Aim – it is a key organizational and individual competency required to make value-based care a reality. 5:50 Dr. Ihrig explaining his early involvement in the ACLC and his journey in health value 8:00 Reverse engineering the individualized care of a patient into programs, training, policy, and reimbursement 10:45 The linear algorithmic model of treatment that leads to an escalation of clinical interventions 11:05 The need to reform medical education so that death is not always viewed as a failure of the physician 12:30 Asking the question, ‘how do I want to live?' shifts the narrative to loving, learning, and growing through every breath 13:00 Informed Consent as one of the core tenets of true palliative care 14:10 Physicians must ask the question: what is sacred to you as an individual? That doesn't change over time, cancer or not. 14:45 Understanding the appropriateness of treatment against the backdrop of where somebody's at on their physiologic journey 14:53 True palliative care going beyond the limits of allopathic reductionism and looking at the whole human being 16:04 Aligning therapies with the clinical reality of where patients are physiologically and what their goals of care are 16:45 Palliative care needs a concise, unified definition of what it is to overcome current misperceptions 18:31 The present medical paradigm sets up fighting to beat Mother Nature, which means we all fail. 19:56 The inflection period - the moment in our health journey when our bodies no longer have the capacity to recover or restore 22:50 Using the inflection period as a tool to prevent iatrogenic causality which potentiates decline secondary to physiologic stress. 23:45 The diminishing ROI of medical interventions at the inflection period 24:18 Dr. Ihrig describes a personal example of iatrogenic causality that brought about death 25:07 Patients becoming victims when we don't understand the reality of death and the limitations of medicine

How can doctors do a better job of helping a patient receive a higher quality of life other than aggressive treatments that will hinder their ability to live? What question should doctors be asking to make sure that the patient has a good quality of life? Dr. Ihrig states that “We should stop focusing so much on that endpoint and shift it and say, how do you want to live?". He expresses that we should be moving away from healthcare reform and talk about how we can reform care. Dr. Ihrig believes that it starts with honest conversations, empowering people to ask questions, shifting the narrative. Dr. Kim Kuebler has worked both on the chronic disease and pain management sides of healthcare. How does pain management fit in with palliative care? She breaks down some insightful statistics about chronic pain management across the country today. What is the difference between palliative care and hospice care? Should palliative care start when the patient has been diagnosed with a chronic disease? Can technology help transform pain management programs in the future? In Ataturk in the Nazi Imagination (Harvard University Press, 2014), historian Stefan Ihrig examines the history of Mustafa Kemal and Republican Turkey through the interpretive lens of Nazi political discourse. Ihrig shows how Ataturk’s Turkey became a symbol of resistance and national rebirth in the interwar period. Challenging semi-colonial or orientalist visions of Turkey held by British and French, German nationalists saw many of their own aspirations play out in Anatolia after World War I. Ataturk’s struggle against the Entente and the Greek Army became an inspiration for the right-wing press, initially overshadowing early fascist leaders like Benito Mussolini Ataturk’s Turkey became model of governance not only to be praised by the Nazi elite, but to be emulated German state. Nazi leaders borrowed liberally from Ataturk’s example, citing “Turkish lessons for Germany” in the right-wing press. Hitler described Ataturk as his own “star in the darkness” during his years of imprisonment and political isolation during the 1920s. Ataturk’s dictatorship paved the way for the Nazis twisted visions of national progress, authority, and modernity. The ethnic cleansing of Armenians and Greeks mirrored the Nazi party’s own view of Jews as a dangerous enemy within. Ihrig shows how the Nazi vision of Ataturk (albeit not the reality) inspired Hitler’s foreign and domestic policy in the years leading up to the World War II. Learn more about your ad choices.
