It's been written that the “scandal of the evangelical mind is that there is no evangelical mind…” A suggestion that evangelicals as a whole don't stand for anything in particular when it comes to the Christian faith. That's not to say today's evangelicals (and conservative Christians in general) don't have values. Rather, when evangelicals show up, it's for themselves. A real, “I got mine and screw everyone else” attitude. Evangelicals, ironically, choose to ignore the teachings of Jesus in favour of personally enriching themselves while reaching to accumulate more social power in America and beyond. Does this sound accurate? But don't take my word for it. Season 11 of the Faith in a Fresh Vibe podcast is here. The most ambitious project to date: a serial podcast story where we bring all of the receipts behind the outlandish claims, with nearly 20 guests including experts in their field, to say: FAREWELL EVANGELICALISM. Guests include: DL Mayfield, Robert J Callahan, Kristian Smith, Tim Whitaker, Marlena Graves, Jared Stacey, and many more. We ask tough questions including: are evangelicals, and conservative Christianity, legit? Do they faithfully follow the teachings of Jesus? Do they even care about Jesus? Cause if we take a look at those receipts along this podcast journey, we will discover that the current form of evangelicalism is not only making our neighborhoods, cities, and countries worse off, but if enough adherents leave, a lot of the systemic problems in our society ranging from rugged individualism, unfettered capitalism, racism, misogyny, queer and trans-phobia, violence, murders, the overall quality of life for everyone…would improve! Could it be? That a key component to what ails us in this moment is more folks sayin, FAREWELL EVANGELICALISM. Find out more, Season 11, on the Faith in a Fresh Vibe podcast. Coming soon….

Tim is a podcaster and frequent commentator on the state of evangelicalism and the intersection of politics and religion in the United States. Tim is host of "The New Evangelicals" podcast and is co-host and frequent guest on a number others, and has a significant presence on other social media. About Tim Whitaker, from The New Evangelicals Website: Growing up, Tim always felt at home in evangelical spaces – until years later, when his studying and questions caused him to no longer be welcomed at in his church community. Brokenhearted, but undeterred, Tim continued to pursue a deeper understanding of faith, history, theology and the evangelical church. The more he uncovers, the more he realizes the importance of advocating for the marginalized in the church, exploring the full depth and breadth of Christian faith traditions, and holding toxic churches and leaders accountable.

Summary In this conversation, Representative James Talarico and Tim Whitaker discuss topics such as Christian nationalism, faith, and navigating political differences. Talarico shares his background growing up in a conservative Christian home but attending a church that emphasized love for all people. He explains how his faith has informed his political views and motivated him to run for office. The conversation also touches on the importance of maintaining a spiritual foundation in politics, finding common ground with ideological opponents, and the challenges of addressing issues like Christian nationalism. In this conversation, Tim Whitaker and James Talarico discuss the importance of engaging in conversations to advocate for marginalized communities, the need for affordable healthcare and paid family leave, the role of right-wing media in spreading misinformation and fear, the threat of Christian nationalism, and the actions individuals can take to make a difference. Takeaways Growing up in a conservative Christian home, Representative James Talarico attended a church that emphasized love for all people, regardless of race, class, gender, or sexual orientation. Talarico's faith has informed his political views and motivated him to run for office, with a focus on dismantling unjust systems and advocating for the well-being of all constituents. Maintaining a spiritual foundation is crucial in navigating the challenges of politics, helping to control emotions and channel anger into productive and loving actions. Finding common ground with ideological opponents is possible through personal connections and shared values, even while maintaining clear policy differences. Addressing issues like Christian nationalism requires resisting harmful ideas and systems while avoiding personal attacks, focusing on the moral contrast and expanding the circle of concern for all people. Engaging in conversations and advocating for marginalized communities is crucial, as it relieves the burden on those directly affected by discriminatory policies. Affordable healthcare and paid family leave are not radical ideas, but necessary measures to support families and ensure their well-being. Right-wing media plays a significant role in spreading misinformation and fear, often prioritizing profit over truth. Christian nationalism poses a threat to democracy and the values of equality and justice. Individuals can make a difference by staying informed, supporting organizations working for change, and actively participating in the democratic process. Christian Nationalism is a giant threat to our country. A danger to women, to minorities, to the marginalized and to democracy itself. While these white, Christian nationalists believe they're saving the country from heathenism, what they're really offering is a theocracy of top down control with themselves at the top. We must see this threat for what it is, and that starts with understanding. Tim Whitaker is the founder of the New Evangelicals, an inclusive, Jesus-centered community that holds space for those marginalized by the evangelical church and advocates for systemic change. Raised deep in the evangelical world – Tim had a crisis of faith watching his church leaders embrace a man who was so antithetical to what he had been taught to believe. He now holds the toxic churches and their leaders accountable, while still offering a home of faith to his fellow Christians. Tripp & Diana were pumped to have Tim Whitaker from The New Evangelicals join us for this edition of Ruining Dinner and our upcoming open online class - Faith and Politics for the Rest of Us. Our contemporary public square is increasingly chaotic, toxic, and repulsive. Yet, our challenges as a people, nation, and species are growing. The rise of Christian Nationalism repulses a growing number of Christians who have a hard time thinking and speaking from a more vibrant theological vision. We are bringing together several alternative theo-political visions to introduce a multiplicity of vibrant, yet neglected traditions in public theology. With the help of some of the most powerful voices in the academy, participants will be introduced to these traditions and get to put them into action as we wrestle with our present moment, discovering the potential for an alternative public Christian witness. In a time where the public square is increasingly tribal and algorithmically addicted to outrage, over-simplification, and performative politics, a tour of these rich yet neglected theological traditions can inspire and fund a more vibrant Christian voice in the public square as we seek to embody the love of neighbor to which we are called. Summary In this conversation, Tim responds to a viral clip of a mega church pastor giving marriage advice. He critiques the pastor's perspective on marriage, particularly the gendered and stereotypical views that men don't care about weddings and women's bodies belong to their husbands. Tim argues that this mentality wreaks havoc on people, especially women, and promotes unhealthy dynamics in marriages. He also discusses the damaging effects of purity culture and the lack of comprehensive sex education in evangelicalism. Tim concludes by urging for a more mutual and respectful approach to marriage. Takeaways Gendered and stereotypical views in marriage advice can be harmful and promote unhealthy dynamics. Purity culture teachings can lead to unsatisfactory sex lives and unhealthy marriages. Comprehensive sex education and open communication are essential for a healthy and mutual marriage. Mutuality and respect should be prioritized in marriages, rather than rigid gender roles. Summary In this conversation, Tim Whitaker interviews Reverend Susan Langner, who was the subject of a YouTube video where a young man confronts her for being a female LGBTQ affirming pastor. They discuss the incident, the challenges of being a woman in ministry, and their different experiences with the Bible. Susan shares her upbringing in a progressive church and the importance of questioning and open-mindedness. They also explore the cultural context of biblical stories and the need for deeper understanding. The conversation highlights the tension between fundamentalist interpretations and more nuanced approaches to faith. In this conversation, Tim and Susan discuss the challenges of interpreting scripture accurately and the cultural assumptions and nuances that can be missed. They explore the impact of fundamentalism and the need for good faith dialogue. They also touch on the experiences of women in ministry and the misogyny and sexism they face. The conversation delves into the themes of deconstruction, the reconciling of conflicting beliefs, and the importance of creating inclusive spaces. They also discuss the power of music in worship and the need for more theologically rich and inclusive songs. Takeaways The incident of the YouTube video highlights the challenges faced by women in ministry and the backlash they can receive from more conservative Christians. Susan's upbringing in a progressive church allowed her to question and explore different interpretations of the Bible, leading to a more nuanced understanding of faith. Understanding the cultural context of biblical stories is crucial for a deeper interpretation and can challenge traditional understandings. The tension between fundamentalist interpretations and more open-minded approaches to faith is an ongoing struggle in many religious communities. Interpreting scripture accurately requires an understanding of cultural assumptions and nuances. Fundamentalism often prioritizes owning and destroying opposing arguments rather than engaging in good faith dialogue. Women in ministry frequently face misogyny and sexism, but there are supportive congregations as well. Deconstruction involves questioning and reevaluating beliefs, which can be a painful but liberating process. Creating inclusive spaces and worship experiences is essential for embracing diversity and fostering a sense of belonging. Summary In this episode, Tim responds to a clip from John Mark Comer discussing the reasons why people deconstruct their faith. Tim critiques Comer's points and offers his own insights. He highlights the importance of addressing church abuse and unaccountable spaces, the impact of poor teaching and shoddy theology, the misconceptions about sin and sexual morality, and bad arguments about the influence of social pressure and leftist ideologies, and the role of demonic oppression in deconstruction. Takeaways Church abuse and unaccountable spaces can lead to deconstruction. Poor teaching and shoddy theology can cause people to reject Christianity. Summary In this episode, Tim delves into the PRRI data on Christian nationalism, highlighting the percentage of Americans who adhere to or reject Christian nationalist views. Tim explores the geographical breakdown of Christian nationalism support, its correlation with political affiliation, and the interpretation of Christian nationalism in the black community. Takeaways Christian nationalism is supported by approximately 30% of Americans, with 10% being adherents and 20% being sympathizers. Support for Christian nationalism is higher in Republican-leaning states and among white evangelical Protestants. Black Christian nationalists interpret the five statements used to measure Christian nationalist views differently, focusing on the fight for equity rather than taking over and using power to control others. Christian nationalism is correlated with support for Trump, far-right news sources, and apocalyptic views of political struggle. They explore themes such as the concept of objective truth, the ambiguity of scripture, the role of subjectivity in interpretation, the problem of selective objectivity, the complexity of biblical interpretation, the inconsistencies in fundamentalist Christian beliefs, reasons for deconstruction, the inadequate responses to deconstruction, the contradictions in the authors' arguments, the flawed application of a modernist lens, the need for a standard outside of scripture, and the logical conclusion of Jesus' divinity. This conversation explores the problematic arguments presented in the book 'Why I Still Believe' by Tim Barnett and J. P. Moreland. The hosts discuss the weak arguments for Jesus as God and the divinely inspired predictions attributed to him. They also critique the book's emphasis on unquestioning biblical authority and the role of humans in interpreting the Bible. The conversation delves into the fear of questioning authority and the difficulty of leaving a tribe or way of life. The hosts highlight the problematic labeling of deconstructors as "captured" and the either/or approach to love. Thomas Oord also discussed his upcoming book on deconstruction and offers a different perspective on the topic. Takeaways The concept of objective truth and the role of subjectivity in interpretation are crucial in understanding deconstruction. The ambiguity of scripture and the complexities of biblical interpretation challenge the idea of a singular, objective truth. The authors' arguments in 'The Deconstruction of Christianity' often lack consistency and fail to address the complexities and nuances of the issues they discuss. The need for a standard outside of scripture and the recognition of the fruit of beliefs are important considerations in evaluating the validity of certain theological claims. The conversation highlights the ongoing challenges and debates surrounding deconstruction and the search for certainty in matters of faith. The arguments presented in 'Why I Still Believe' for Jesus as God and the divinely inspired predictions attributed to him are weak and unconvincing. Questioning biblical authority does not equate to deconstructing it, and it is important to recognize the role of humans in interpreting the Bible. The fear of questioning authority and the difficulty of leaving a tribe or way of life can hinder the process of deconstruction. Love should not be reduced to standing for truth or empathy alone, but should aim for overall well-being and flourishing. There is a need for a book that offers guidance and support to friends and parents of deconstructors, helping them navigate the process with empathy and understanding. They also explore the role of Christian nationalism and the theology of disgust in perpetuating discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. The conversation emphasizes the power of disgust in fueling fascism and the social spread of disgust. This conversation explores the concept of disgust and its impact on society, particularly in relation to the LGBTQ+ community. It highlights the contrast between Jesus' acceptance and the Christian disgust towards queer individuals. The conversation emphasizes the importance of the gospel as good news and the need to transform disgust into love and acceptance. It also discusses the power of love and intimacy in decreasing disgust reactions. The conversation delves into the dangers of accounts like Libs of TikTok and the real-world consequences they can have, as demonstrated by Billie's personal experience. Billie shares her personal experience of facing false accusations and a targeted campaign to remove her from her teaching position. The conversation also discusses the misrepresentation of video footage and the dangerous consequences of stigmatizing safe spaces for LGBTQ+ students. The role of Haya, the creator of Libs of TikTok, in shaping educational policies is examined, highlighting the lack of expertise and integrity in her involvement. Addressing the systemic issues that perpetuate violence and discrimination against trans people requires challenging and dismantling Christian nationalist ideologies.
