The Yankees' tumultuous season got a bit more challenging this weekend as they lost their star to injury. The best player in baseball, Aaron Judge, is out for the foreseeable future with a flexor strain in his right elbow. He did not tear his UCL, but the fear of preventing that may cause the Yankees to proceed with caution when figuring out a timetable for his return. Coming off of a series loss to the Phillies, how will the Yankees adjust going forward, and will we see Judge again this year? Jake and Jordan discuss all of the possibilities and share their thoughts about what they think should happen.Slightly over a year ago, Nick Kurtz was getting drafted out of Wake Forest. Now, Kurtz is not only playing in the majors, but he just made MLB history. Kurtz became the first rookie ever to hit four home runs in a major league game. "The Big Amish," Kurtz's nickname despite the fact that he is not Amish, went 6-for-6 with 4 HR, 8 RBI and 19 total bases vs. the Houston Astros on Friday night. Although Jacob Wilson has taken most of the headlines for the A's, they have another star in Kurtz. Pat Hester was on assignment this past week and friend of the podcast, Eric Carlson, stepped in to talk all things White Sox and show off his Gene Honda impression. Sox were playing some very good baseball and punched the Cubs in the mouth to start off the three game series but simply could not finish things off on the South Side. Ichiro Suzuki, CC Sabathia, and Billy Wagner, will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker in the MLB Hall of Fame Class of 2024. But as those stars are enshrined in Cooperstown, we remember a baseball legend we lost recently. RIcky Henderson passed away on December 20th, at 65 years of age, just days before his 66th birthday. The game's greatest lead off hitter, base stealer, and as the inventor of swagger, Rickey's impact can still be felt now. Is it easier to get 400 baseball writers to all agree on who is a Hall of Famer or 30 Major League Baseball owners to agree on ways to address skyrocketing payroll disparity? That's the question that begins a brand new episode of the Best Podcast in Baseball. Esteemed baseball writer Tyler Kepner, of The Athletic and formerly with the New York Times, joins host Derrick Goold to discuss Ichiro Suzuki and his peers in the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. It's a robust class that includes a top left-handed starter CC Sabathia who got elected on his first ballot and a top left-handed reliever Billy Wagner who got elected on his final ballot. The class also includes Dick Allen and Dave Parker to further reveal the many numerous routes available to players to reach induction in Cooperstown. There is the expressway that Suzuki takes with near unanimous support. There is the state two-lane highway that will likely welcome switc-hitter Carlos Beltran to Cooperstown in 2026, and then there's the country roads that Wagner had to drive to ultimately reach immortality. All of which brings us to the crossroads currently facing baseball. With the Dodgers spending freely and collecting all of the talent, is the only way deep into October through Los Angeles? The two baseball writers discuss the widening gap in the game and explore one reason for the dramatic change (hint: shrinking small- and mid-market television revenues) -- and whether there will be a correction in a few years. The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. It appears weekly wherever you subscribe or listen to podcasts and is part of the newspaper's Constant Cardinals Coverage.

Recording Date: 12/8/2024 Rundown [Intro] 2024 Winter Meetings generating more news on Day 1 than all of 2023 Winter Meetings [3:00] Dick Allen makes the Hall of Fame, finally. [9:50] According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, Juan Soto is signing with the New York Mets for a deal that could pay him more than $800 million over the contract's lifetime. Why this type of deal raises questions about sustainability in rising free agent contracts, and how disappointing it is to be a White Sox fan knowing ownership would never make the necessary deals to land players like Soto. [28:04] Latest Garrett Crochet gossip has the Boston Red Sox not being aggressors in talks, but Cincinnati and New York Yankees are very interested Learn more about your ad choices. With Dick Allen up for the Hall of Fame on Sunday, we're bringing back two memorable conversations Chuck Garfien had with his former White Sox teammate Goose Gossage who doesn't hold back explaining why Allen belongs in the Hall of Fame. Gossage talks about how Allen took him under his wing as a rookie in 1972 and tells stories about some of his most majestic home runs. Later, Chuck states the case for Allen to join Gossage in Cooperstown.
Rundown [Intro] Sox Machine will be heading on the road to Dallas, Texas covering the 2024 Winter Meetings. The crew shares their favorite memories of past Winter Meetings and what to expect concerning coverage. [13:09] The Chicago White Sox still haven't officially announced their 2025 coaching staff, which creates confusion as to why and raises the open question of how new manager Will Venable isn't bringing more new faces to the clubhouse. [27:01] Garrett Crochet will garner attention in Dallas, and James Fegan is hearing about the possibility of another three-team trade format [36:51] Frankie Montas and Matthew Boyd signed new deals with an AAV greater than $14 million despite recent injuries and poor performance. Is it time to reconsider how we calculate WAR/$ for pitchers as the free agency market continues to inflate? [46:03] There will be another vote for Hall-of-Fame as Dick Allen gets another crack. Will he finally make it, and why John Donaldson's contributions shouldn't be ignored. [1:00:00] Making fun of Rob Manfred's new rule proposal, the Rule 5 Draft for White Sox, and MLB Draft Lottery results Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Then, Seattle Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto stops by to talk about becoming a first-time grandfather, improving the infield, avoiding a slow start for Julio Rodriguez, and GM scouting reports on A.J. Preller and Dave Dombrowski.
