The first thing that struck me about Silke was her content. I knew she was fairly new to the freelancing world, but she was getting comments and starting conversations on her posts in a way that felt real and natural. I remember commenting on one of her posts, which led to a few more comments and we also started chatting privately.I hear so many comments about people not knowing what to post, people second-guessing themselves and in the end not sharing things, or outsourcing it all to AI and hoping for the best… I wanted to have this conversation with someone who was creating content that connects people and starts meaningful conversations.I also wanted to find out why Silke chose to focus on women's health and mental health content and to explore what happens when people don't have access to information that's relevant to them in a language that they understand. We talked about: Silke's story with languages and why she decided to focus on translating content on women's health topics How it was for Silke starting out as a freelancer in the language industry and why she set up a peer group for others in the same position How having a mentor helped Silke to gain clarity and make progress – check out Valentina Alia's episode from last week Why it's important to have business-related conversations in our additional languages Where Silke gets her inspiration for LinkedIn content and what's important to her when she writes her posts Silke's advice to others who are new in the language industry. Who is Silke? My name is Silke Kogler. I love learning foreign languages and talking about physical and mental wellbeing. That's why I recently decided to combine my two passions and become a German translator specializing in women's health and mental health. By helping international wellness brands with thoughtful and authentic translations into German, I want to empower women, especially, to educate themselves on how to live a happier and healthier life. Outside of work, I love reading all kinds of books, practicing yoga, and having deep conversations. I'm also currently taking a course on holistic women's health to deepen my knowledge and offer even better services to my clients.Find out more and access the episode links here on the show notes page: https://www.englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode314

“Rare, deadly virus” is a phrase that can hijack your nervous system, especially after the last few years. We slow the whole story down and walk through what hantavirus is, why it's trending again, and how to tell the difference between a serious public health investigation and a true pandemic threat. We start with the headline that pulled hantavirus back into the spotlight: an unusual outbreak tied to a cruise ship traveling through parts of South America, with multiple passengers becoming seriously ill and reported deaths. From there, we explain why experts are paying close attention to the Andes virus strain, the one hantavirus with evidence of possible person-to-person spread, and what that actually means in real life. The key nuance: even when human transmission happens, it appears to require close, prolonged contact, not the kind of casual exposure that drives rapid global spread. Then we zoom into the practical, everyday risks that matter most for listeners. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) can begin with flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, and nausea, and in some cases it can progress quickly to severe lung problems. We cover the most common route of infection: rodent exposure, especially when cleaning dusty enclosed spaces like sheds, cabins, garages, barns, and attics. You'll leave with clear prevention steps inspired by public health guidance, like ventilating first, using disinfectant, wearing gloves, and avoiding dry sweeping or vacuuming droppings. If you want facts, context, and a calmer way to process outbreak news, hit play, share this with someone who's anxious about the headlines, and subscribe so you don't miss the next checkup. Listen to today's podcast... Part of spring cleaning is tackling your cupboards and drawers.  Well how about that medicine cupboard? Do You Know About Medication Safety? I know that mine had been neglected when I found a jar of Vicks medicated rub from when I was a kid.  Yes, that was a long time ago and yes, it was about time that it was thrown out.  I have no idea if that stuff ever goes bad, but I probably should have thrown it out years ago.  I have carted it from my bedroom, to my residence room, to my first apartment, and then from one home to the next with my family. Medication errors are said to affect at least 1.5 million Canadians per year according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information.  And those mistakes can be disastrous. Medication safety isn't just about an expiry date.  It's about safe storage.  Knowing what medications may interact with other medications, food and supplements. It's about telling your doctor about any side effects you may have had from previous prescriptions and what supplements or over-the-counter medications you may be taking. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!      Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating Medication Safety Week: Check your prescriptions periodically for expiration dates Don't share medicines with friends or family Dispose of medications properly. Most pharmacies will take your old drugs for proper disposal. Avoid putting them in trashcans or into the toilet Remember that the term “natural” does not necessarily mean “safe”.  Treat all supplements and herbal remedies with the same respect as you would any prescribed medications  Make Sure That Your Family Stays Safe And Healthy Want to find more strategies to coping with stress? What if your heartbeat could help determine your dementia risk? The CAIDE dementia risk score has long helped clinicians estimate midlife risk for dementia using cardiovascular health factors, but its accuracy hasn't been equal across populations. New research suggests that integrating resting heart rate meaningfully improves predictive performance across most racial groups. In this interview, Dr. Newman Sze and Shakiru Alaka join us to dig into how and why resting heart rate enhances CAIDE's accuracy, what the data shows across different racial groups, and what this could mean for earlier, more equitable identification of dementia risk in both research and clinical settings.
