Would you consider yourself a person of excellence? How clean is your microwave? In this message, Pastor Tim Martin shares how We can pursue excellence. Being a person of excellence doesn't mean being perfect. The original motto for Victory Fellowship Church was "the perfect church for imperfect people".We should reflect God's character, reflecting him wholeheartedly Characteristics of a person of excellence:- FaithHebrew 11:6Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.- IntegrityProverbs 20:7    The righteous who walks in his integrity—        blessed are his children after him!Matthew 5:37 Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.- CompassionEphesians 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Are you tired and struggling, Jesus has compassion on you. A person of excellence will ask God to see people the way God sees them. - Humility1 Peter 5:5-7[5] Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."[6] Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, [7] casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.- Persistence Galatians 6:9-10And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. You become a person of excellence by spending time with God. You learn to trust God the more you spend time with him. Like the way a horse learns to trust his master, we should learn to trust our Master. A well-trained horse will obey quickly. The horse has spent a lot of time with his master and has learned to trust his master's commands. As children of God, we can learn to trust God as we spend time with Him. Time had a horse named Lucky, wherever he pointed Lucky's head, he would go. We need to be like that with God.

In early 1820 a young farm boy by the name of Joseph Smith believed he had a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ appearing to him, exhorting him not to join any of the existing churches of his day, for they were all corrupt. Just over 200 years later in 2023 in Wilmore, Kentuck in the main chapel on the campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, something of a revival began. For two weeks, thousands of people from all over the world came to Ashbury to see for themselves what was happening. During these two weeks, people prayed and sang worship songs. Many Christians, however, debated as to whether or not this was a genuine revival or just an emotive outpouring of mostly Gen-Z'ers. And most Evangelical Christians criticize Joseph's Smith's first vision as either legendary, completely fabricated, or theologically aberrant. How can we rightly discern whether or not people's personal experiences are truly from God? This week on the Profile we wrap up our conversation with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffery Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and consider more of Lewis's insights and how they can equip us to think biblically about personal religious experiences.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. If you have ever had a deeply moving personal experience with God, you know it can be something that words cannot adequately convey. Perhaps it is deeply emotional, powerful, and moving. The experience solidifies your conviction that what you believe about God is true. You might also believe God "spoke" to you in that moment. But given that there are a multitude of other religions today with devotees who claim to have similar experiences, how can we know that what we have experienced is an authentic movement of the God who is there? This week and next on the Profile, we talk with theologian and literary scholar Dr. Jeffrey Barbeau about his new book The Last Romantic - C.S. Lewis, English Literature, and Modern Theology and how Lewis's thoughts about Romantic poetry might give us some insight about the nature of personal religious experiences and how properly to think about them.Jeffery Barbeau (Ph.D., Marquette University) is professor of theology at Wheaton College, Editor of The Coleridge Bulletin, and a writer on British Romanticism, religion and literature, and the history of Christian thought. What is your spiritual wishlist?Did you know that you can live life unoffended? In this message, Pastor Tim Martin shares how you can life an unoffended life. When offenses come, you can choose not to be offended. Every day we have choices.James 1:2Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. You predetermine that you will not be offended. Offense is a sister to unforgiveness. How do you deal with offense? If someone offend you, go to that person and reconcile with that person. Unforgiveness or offense is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to get sick. Proverbs 10:12Hatred stirs up quarrels, but love makes up for all offenses. Matthew 6:14-15If you forgive those who sin against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.Colossians 3:13Make allowance for each other's faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.  Carrying offense is the same as holding unforgiveness toward another. Forgiveness is contagious. When you share your offense with others, people get mad because you are mad.  Don't spread offense.Consider whether you are offended at God. Have you blamed God for something? You need to understand that there are some things you will never understand. If there is a loss that you have experienced, or something happened that you don't understand, know that God has got it. He is with you.

Saying "No" to temptation. In this message, Pastor Tim Martin shares how to resist and stand firm against temptation. Temptation is the state of being tempted especially to evil. (Dictionary)James 1-12-15. 12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.Genesis 3:1-31 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?.."Genesis 3:4-6 - Humankind gives into temptation in the garden. 2 Samuel 11:3-5 - David gives into temptation. Matthew 4:1-41 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' " ..."10 Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.' "11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him."Jesus said "No" to the temptations. Tim found alcohol as a crutch to deal with pain of losing his father.Tim ended up in a church on a Sunday morning thinking "I need to get my life right". "I'll give you everything."He surrendered everything to God. Tim asked God to take the taste of alcohol from him. And, Tim has not tasted alcohol since then, 24 years ago. When you learn to say "No" to temptations you will not be able to contain God's blessing.Giving into temptation takes you off the route in which God has prepared blessing after blessing for you. "When I said no to alcohol 24 years ago, I don't have to re-choose every time I'm tempted." - Tim MartinEphesians 6:10-18 "... Be strong in the Lord... Put on the whole armor of God..."You are going to face temptations. How to prevent falling into temptation again and again?Make your choice. Daily put on the whole armor of God.  Are you falling book, line, and sinker into temptation?
