A Mother Explains Her Experience between Mommy and Me Swim Lessons vs Infant Swim Lessons

Today's podcast we are talking with Nicole Nusshag. A Mother Explains Her Experience between Mommy and Me Swim Lessons vs Infant Swim Lessons. She is a mother who started her daughter off in a mommy and me swim lessons and then learned about infant swim. After learning about infant swim lessons and getting her daughter involved and skilled. She moved to Arizona and realized that she still had the need from these lessons and there was nobody around that was able to teach so she took it into her own hand and became an Infant Swim Instructor. Listen to this episode as Nicole a Mother explains the difference between these two types of classes and what you should consider and why? Rick: "There's a lot more that goes into this, then just say going down to the local YMCA and learning how to swim.""Nicole: As soon as a child is old enough to roll over on land, they're old enough to be able to be taught to roll over in the water." Rick: A Mommy and Me Class - So a 30 minute class on individual instruction with the instructor. How much time was the instructor actually spending with you and your baby? Nicole:One-on-one? Maybe two minutes if that. Rick:So, you're paying for a 30-minute class and getting two minutes' worth of instruction. Nicole: But with me, it's 10 minutes. I'm working the entire time, the child, we'll be tired after the 10 minutes like they're done. And there are some kids that, they're done at say seven or eight minutes, they're just done and we have to call it. It was a good productive lesson that day, and the reason why the lessons are so short is that they get tired. Rick: Welcome to DW nation, everyone. This is your host, Rick Kauffman with the drowning warrior podcast. We've got a guest here with us today. We're actually going to be talking to an infant swim specialist actually with Aqua babies survival swim school. And this is Nicole Nusshag and she is in Vail or otherwise a suburb of Tucson, Arizona. So if you're familiar with the Tucson, Arizona, that area, I'm sure you're aware of the climate, the type of homes, everything like that. So it's summer, I would say almost all year except for today. Okay. So welcome Nicole and welcome to the drowning warrior podcast here today. Nicole: Thank you. Thanks for having me. I'm happy to be here. Rick: Well, we're happy to have you. And actually we kind of met just kind of live, give a how we met you ran across one of our previous podcasts and then started looking into things and found me on social media and found a couple of our, you found our Facebook community, which is DW nation, which is a private community there. And you've engaged with us in that area. And then we'll you and I jumped on a really nice phone call with your daughter and as your daughter was the leader of that phone conversation, we had a really, really good time and I learned a lot about you and vice versa. So why don't you just take a moment, let our listeners know about a little bit about your background and how and what we're going to get into this survival swimming, you know, a conversation, but how you really got involved in that. Nicole: Okay. Yeah. So, Nicole: I grew up swimming around pools and lakes and rivers. I grew up in Washington state, so there's water all over the place there. And that was just, that was part of our lifestyle was being in the water in the summertime. And when I had my first child in 2015, that's when it really started setting in the dangers of water and children. And I wanted to make sure that, that my child, now, you know, I have more than one now, but, but I wanted to make sure that they were going to be comfortable around the water, be able to swim. And kind of have the same lifestyle that I had, being able to enjoy the water in the hot weather or any time. So I started looking into getting her into swim lessons Nicole: Early on. She was four months old at the time when I,

Brandon, welcome to the show here today. Brandon (00:31): Thank you. Having me Rick (00:32): Telling. Our stories are really, really important. I know many, many of us and I think you're a lot like I am. We want people to understand that our children were just regular everyday children. I mean there really nothing different between you as a parent and your children and all the other families and children that are out there running around today. I mean, would you agree with that assessment, Brandon? Brandon (00:55): Totally. I mean it's not like we have a, Brandon (00:58): when I was set apart from anybody, we're all pretty much the same. Rick (01:02): I know for myself and as parents we never would have believed that, uh, we would be part of this group in this club. So Brandon, why don't you just take a moment here and tell us a little bit about your son, the type of boy he was. Tell us, tell us in your words as much as you would like to let us know, tell us a little bit about what happened. Brandon (01:23): Okay. Well my son's name was Bentley Maverick Love uh, yes, he got his middle name from the movie top gun and it was very, very outgoing. I mean he only lived to be two years old, but I could tell like he would have had just a full life happiness, you know, he cleared any time grandma or his brother or me or anybody was upset. He could tell and he would just give it to latch on to you and he would do it again Brandon (01:54): to at least get you to smile. And then he would start laughing. Where do you want your smile? He was very strong, very athletic. At two years old. He blew me away when we were playing catch with a baseball, throw a baseball, head your hands up and he was going to hit you with him. And he was not afraid to stand up for himself whenever his brother got to picking on him a little-bit Brandon (02:15): and now he was just extremely outgoing and I could...

A 5-Year-Old Girl Drowns A Daughter and Her Father Reveil Mistakes at a Lifeguarded Pool Every Parent Needs To Know

We are talking to two very brave people, Sarah Watkins and her Father Bart Watkins, that stepped up and their training took over and responded to a situation. So I would like to ask you would you know what to do if a 5-Year-Old Girl Drowns in a pool that you were attending while it was guarded by lifeguards? This is what every parent with children that can or even can't swim needs to know. "Listen to Sarah and her father Bart tell their full story of the events of this day in a public lifeguarded pool with others standing around. It's what you need to know and check what you think you may know how to keep your children safe." I would like to thank our sponsor of this episode Safeswimminglessons.com. If you would like to learn what it will take to teach the little ones to swim and to self-rescue check out their website, The program is closing on March 15th to save 50% on their program. Let me tell you a quick story about a 5-year-old girl who drowned and a daughter and her father that took action. At the time Sarah and her daughter were enjoying swimming in the pool while her father Bart was swimming laps in the indoor pool. Sarah noticed what was happening when she saw the lifeguards just standing around, talking and pointing at the little girl and asked if anyone has checked on her?. Sarah was getting more and more upset at their lack of ability to respond to this situation in the manner that she was trained when she was a lifeguard and an instructor. Then the bottom fell out from under everyone and Sarah knew she had to take action and started to perform CPR, as they just weren't doing it right until she could go on no more. Sarah then ran to get her father, Bart to take over CPR. This meant she couldn't keep going,  performing CPR can take a lot out of you after what seemed to be a long time and she just couldn't go on. As you can imagine, this situation was going from bad to worse and becoming a desperate situation but they weren't ready to give up. They had to keep going to save this little girl. She was transported to the hospital where she didn’t survive this drowning even after all they had done. Earlier the girl was wearing a puddle jumper similar to the picture. She had removed this life vest (Puddle Jumper) while her grandfather went to the restroom. She then entered the pool not wearing her puddle jumper. For children of this age group accustomed to wearing these types of PFD's, they do not understand that this is what keeps them afloat. Then we discovered, after this drowning, we had started to ask questions and they were surprised at what we found out. At that point, everything changed for Bart and Sarah! They discovered that this facility was: Unprepared to handle an event like this little 5-year-old girl The rescue equipment was not present or and even their AED machine was locked up in the office That they do not perform the type of training that would prepare them for this. Plus, not to mention that they spent time on their cell phones and talking with one another instead of scanning and watching the patrons in the pool Because what Bart and Sarah had discovered, after this drowning, they had started to ask questions and were surprised at what they found out. After this event, it has energized Bart and Sarah to take action in their community and begin to educate parents and children of the dangers around water and these pools If it was going to happen then they were going to have to get involved in their community that is based in a low-income area, as the education is just not available to the public Sarah started to reach out to others in the water safety and drowning prevention community via social media, plus sharing their story. They both now have begun to hear from so many others that have had similar stories of non-fatal drownings and others that ended up just like this little 5-year-old girl. So Sad Now,

Listen to this episode to hear how Rory is just like any other normal toddler that we know walking around our house and yours. "Within minutes of my friend calling 911, a volunteer fireman heard the call and was just minutes away." They could have done nothing after his death. Yet Rory was too special and God had bigger plans for him and his family. They wanted to save other families from their nightmare. There isn't a thing that she wouldn't do for her children. She would go out of her way to make sure that no harm would ever come to them. Just as any parent would do, until June 15, 2019. When her son Linkin wondered off and opened a gate to a pool and fell in the water. He was estimated to be in the water for 5-10 minutes. When the first responders showed up and start lifesaving efforts on Linkin. They transported Linkin to the hospital and that's when Linkin's extremely hard journey of recovery started. To hear the full story you'll need to click the play button and listen to Jennifer tell her story that any mother would never want to have to live through or even have to share. You can help Linkin in his recovery, Jennifer has set up Linkin's Go-Fund-Me Account As Jennifer shares her story, she's going to let you know just the kind of boy Linkin is. That he is just like any other little boy, he is curious, into things, will to take all the chances and risks because to him and to every other little boy, it's something new or it's something that he wants or wants to do. As a Father of children and grandchildren, I know that every time I see a young child like Linkin that they are no different than he is. Jennifer now knows this first hand. She has turned this tragedy into a mission of hope and to share Linkin's Miracle in the Making to the world. She also understands that it could have been a matter of seconds to a minute or 2 and the outcome would have been completely different. This has turned into her cause to share with other parents in her community, around the state of Texas as Texas is one of the leading States in drownings and non-fatal drownings. Because parents just don't believe that it can happen, just as she believed before that date that we share in common, June 15th. We both know how fast it can happen with two different outcomes. Graphic #1 Our Vision as it is shown in this graphic above shows that our goal is to save 185,000 lives from fatal drowning and over 1 Million lives from nonfatal drowning by June 15th, 2029. In order to accomplish that we'll need to reach a minimum of 100 million people, this is built on the Know, Like and Trust factor. You can see this in the graphic. Plus educational messages along with information all to help get water safety and drowning prevention awareness out to those who need to know what you have to say or how you provide a solution to a particular problem that was covered in the content. The main focus here is to keep the cost down while reaching that largest audience possible while driving traffic for the result that you are looking for. Important note there may be some trigger moments if you have lived through a drowning or a nonfatal drowning in this episode. It was Feb 28, 2018, that changed their lives forever. Their precious 3-year-old Robert suffered a non-fatal drowning. After an hour of CPR by his oldest sister, his grandmother, Willis PD and EMS they got a heartbeat back. The Road to Recovery began. "In our experience, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the most powerful tool for combating hypoxic/anoxic brain injury from drowning" In this case, if you do not know or haven't heard about Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It's a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving. Other conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, and wounds that won't heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. - There is just one part I believe that they leave out as Will explained that this treatment is not recognized as a method of treatment for non-fatal drowning victims by most people in the medical community. Again listen to this episode to hear Will explain this. Trish shares her personal passion for how she starts in Northern Virginia as a competitive swimmer that took her to Florida for college and now she is living her dream teaching children how to swim and save themselves. She is also a health and wellness coach and understands the importance of living a healthy life but most importantly the benefits of the water and swimming long term. You don't have to take it from me or my story. However, my podcast is filled with others who share the same story and understand the TRUTH when it comes to this life skill. These lessons just do not swim lessons, they are a life skill that will save your child's life if they were to fall in the pool or an open body of water. Trish shares a story in this episode of a child that was missing on a lake and was found floating over 45 minutes later. That child now walks this earth because of this skill. So make sure to listen to this episode to get the full story About Trish Trish has been teaching children swimming lessons for over 14 years and LOVES every minute of it!! She's an Aquarius and needs to be around the water, it keeps her personally balanced.  Trish was on a swim team at age 5 and continued competition swimming until she went away to college.   She is a proud mother of 4 beautiful children...who all went through the same swim program when they were babies.  So she knows how it feels as a parent to sit on the deck and watch your precious angel go through these swimming lessons.   She has many incredible stories of children that have been taught, accidentally falling in the water and then rotating onto their back till their parents could retrieve them safely.   She's passionate that EVERY child should receive swimming lessons as soon as they start crawling.  It is her way of making a difference and giving a child a life long skill :)  Trish believes that swimming builds confidence, body awareness, self-esteem, teaches self-control and patience. EP064 Infant Drowns After Falling Out of a Canoe Caught In Strainer

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 25, 2019 22:38

Photo courtesy of ABC 22 and Fox 45 Dayton Ohio In today's episode, I'm talking about an accident that took place in a river just down the road from my home. You read the title right and I'm sure you're asking the same questions I asked when I first had this come across my newsfeed as it was taking place. Before everyone rushes to judgment, let me say this. I was a parent who lost a child to drowning when she was 3 just 8 feet in front of a lifeguard. While both are very different but as a parent who has lost a child to drowning it's what we don't know "That is where we start". Drowning doesn't discriminate and it doesn't care what you know or what you don't know. With that being said Layers of protection in pools and open bodies of water and that includes rivers have to be in place. Know your risks and wear a life jacket that's age-appropriate. I was a parent that said after his daughter drowned why I didn't know these things. Just as this mother and family didn't know. Yes, there are so many unanswered questions. I talk about many of these in this episode. As of today Thursday, July 25, 2019, reports from people say the child had a life vest on however authorities aren't stating whether or not she did and no child or infant life vest was discovered. This drowning is under current investigation and we will be bringing some experts to follow up on this drowning as I believe that these happen more than most people may know. There was a stainer down the river and this is where they were ejected from the canoe and the infant child also was ejected and the mother was unable to hold on and at that time the child went under the water and must have been caught in the swift current caused by the water level and the strainer. The definition of a strainer is as follows.: An obstruction allows water to pass through but stops and holds objects such as boats and people. Bouncing twigs may indicate a partially submerged strainer. Many and most of the time these are down trees. What is classified as a STRAINER Now with that being said, You must understand the risks and dangers of the water you are navigating. Know where it is safe to get in and to get out of the water. That all people have the proper fitting USG ( U.S. Coast Guard) approved life jacket on and that must be for children and infants and if not present then you DO NOT ENTER THE WATER no matter what type of craft and waterway you are on that goes for rivers, lakes, oceans. these are considered open bodies of water that would also include ponds streams and retention ponds, drainage ditches anywhere that water may be. Melanie reached out to me Sunday to share this story to those who are following us. I felt it was important to do a special podcast today to honor with what she has created in her husband memory. Please take the time to listen to this episode and Click Here to read the article. Melanie a dear friend that I had the opportunity to meet last year at the NDPA conference in Tampa and again we met up in New Orleans. The heroic efforts of her husband Ken saved a life of a boy swimming in the gulf off the coast of Florida who's life was saved. This day was known as Black Sunday 16 years ago. Many lives lost to rough water and rip currents. Know the risks and what to do before you go. Melanie has created the Ken Brindley Memorial Foundation (wise water safe swimmer) to promote water safety while raising funds to implement prevention measures, including vouchers for free swimming lessons and life jacket sharing stations. I want to honor her and her family as they remember her Husband and Father who gave so much so others can survive as she gives a voice to those who no longer have a voice Melanie Brindley doesn’t think of her husband, who died 16 years ago after heroically saving a young boy from drowning. She is honoring his memory and his Good Samaritan personality as a determined advocate for water safety. “Drowning is a world health epidemic,” Melanie said. “It crosses all ages and it doesn’t discriminate at all – for economics, color or race. Anyone can drown, but we say there are layers of protection that can help prevent it.” Click here to connect with her on Facebook For more information on the Foundation or local efforts to help prevent drowning, visit the Ken Brindley Memorial Foundation page on Facebook or email Melanie at info@swimsafety.org. You'll want to listen to this episode as she tells you what happened to her son that was completely preventable if she would have just known of the risks. However, we as parents believe that we do what is right. We would have never known or could even imagine that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children under the age of 5 and the 2nd leading cause for children under 15 Deborah Writes - "On a beautiful June afternoon, my son Christopher died in our backyard pool because his mask, like those used for snorkeling and scuba diving, flooded, changing my life forever. This tragedy could have easily been averted had I been aware of certain guidelines. " "These six years of childhood came to an abrupt end on that June afternoon and became the worst memory of my life. Imagine buying an accessory to enhance your child’s experience in the water, and it becoming the very thing that brings about tragedy. " "Christopher learned to swim with the aid of a mask when he was four years old. He was initially scared to put his face in the water, but with the mask covering his eyes and nose, he quickly learned to swim. He became confident in the water. The mask kept water out of his eyes and nose and gave him a view of the underwater world. I purchased Christopher’s mask at a local pool supply store. I found it in the toy section along with the all the diving toys. It was packaged as appropriate for youth and made of cheap materials. There were no safety warnings or instructions with the mask. The potential dangers of the mask, much less the need to ensure a proper fit, did not even cross my mind. I therefore assumed that the mask was safe to use and every time that Christopher swam, he wore his mask." Listen to today's episode to get the whole story and to understand the importance of haveing a "Culture of Safety". Journey, just like so many other aquatic professionals got started young as a lifeguard and working her way up the ladder to where she manages community pools to provide lifeguards. To where is now today with the City of Baytown Tx. We talk about the challenges to hire qualified lifeguards as it's not just a problem for her but that of many other facilities to have the lifeguard pass the minimum swim test. Proud supporter ofThe Kels GroupThe WAVE System Drowning Detection http://.wavedds.com 'Culture of Safety that has to be in place with an operation like this, right down to finding the parent of a 2 year old that may have wondered off from their parents. Having parents understand that they need to keep their children at an arms length away at all time. The water is a dangerous place for children, as drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children ages 1-4. It is a priority of Journey's but also of ours here at the Kels Group to educate parents on the importance of learning to swim and to properly supervise children at all times as the staff and lifeguard are not babysitters. I have explained this many times before in my own situation regarding my daughters drowning. As parents we must be responsible. Understand that it can happen to you as drowning can happen to anyone at any time when they are in the water regardless of ability to swim or supervision. We are Human and because we are we make mistakes. Understand water safety and know the rules. Learn to swim at the earliest age and yes that includes you too Moms and Dads.
