What amends do you need to make for your past creative sins? How can you forgive yourself for the past creative mistakes you've made? Two deep questions from my conversation with Gary Rogowski—furniture maker, podcaster, author, and teacher. In this conversation, Gary shares stories that inspire his latest podcast project, Creativity: Hustlers, Fakers, and Thieves. Additionally, we discuss the creative process from different angles: forgiveness and humility. It was an enriching conversation to have and to return to in the editing process. I hope you'll learn much from it as you continue your creative journey.
Welcome to the podcast Creativity: Hustlers, Fakers, and Thieves. Our first episode introduces you to Gary Rogowski, host, Master Craftsman, and author. His Apprentice is Ali Meghdadi, woodworker and scholar. They discuss the format of the podcast and begin to examine some of the issues that working artists face. Issues such as Curiosity, Practice, and Quality are a part of each artist's philosophy of work. How do artists face a problem and solve it? Is practice more important than talent? And most importantly, how do they handle mistakes, a lack of confidence, or a complete failure in their work? These are everyday issues and not just for the rich and famous but for all artists. What makes C: HFT different is that we presume that Creativity is accessible to all. It is not the province of only a few lucky/ unlucky souls. We can all be creative. C: HFT examines the concepts that all artists intuitively possess. This philosophy informs their work. Master and Apprentice, by virtue of their different time in the field, will examine these issues from two different perspectives. The questions they pose will help us learn new ways of considering Creativity.

Not a day goes by lately where I'm not thinking about reinventing myself and the work I do. I find myself working more with my hands, which lead me to reach out to Gary Rogowski and invite him back on the show for another conversation about craft, failure, practice, process, and constant improvement. Gary is a furniture maker, writer, and teacher. In this conversation, he shares how he reinvented his work over the past year, along with his curiosity for geometry, storytelling, and bird watching. He also has a lot to say about problem-solving, the secret to focusing, finding success with the small things, and how teaching truly impacts a craftsperson.

Another trip back to Des Moines, Iowa this week. The 'Weekend with WOOD' conference was a wealth of information for all the attendees, especially myself. High on my list of classes were anything that had to do with finishing. When I saw Gary Rogowski was to be teaching a finishing class I knew I had to sign-up. Today's snippets are all from Gary's "Three Simple Finishes" class on Saturday morning and as I mention in the video, there were plenty of moments where I was so wrapped up in the discussions that I forgot to film some of the best information.
