Communities across the country are marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. In Alaska, organizers say they are using the milestone to tell a broader story — one that includes Alaska’s history, its people, and Native contributions to America’s pastime. The America250-Alaska Commission’s “Week of Dreams” begins Saturday and runs through July 4 with events in Anchorage and Fairbanks celebrating Alaska’s connection to baseball. Opening ceremonies at Mulcahy Field will include Alaska Native Heritage Dancers, a parade of athletes, and recognition of the Knock Down and Skin ‘Em Club from St. Paul Island, believed to be Alaska’s oldest baseball team. One of the organizers is Olga Zacharof of St. Paul Island. For more than a decade, Zacharof has helped organize community softball games on the island. She and her husband, Dimitri, recently expanded those efforts to Anchorage, bringing together Unangax families through the sport. Zacharof says the game has long brought families and community members together in St. Paul, and she hopes being a part of this week’s events will do the same. “I hope to make our people proud. I hope to make the Aleut people from the Pribilofs proud. And how lucky I am to be able to represent us in that light.” Former Major League Baseball pitcher DJ Carrasco will also be in Alaska for the celebration. Carrasco now serves as director of Native Nations Baseball, an organization working to increase opportunities for Indigenous youth in baseball and softball. Carrasco says Native Nations Baseball is about more than teaching the game. “Native Nations is a resource not only in the sport but like holistic health and wellness belief and nutrition. We believe in the holistic development of an actual person. A good person, how to be a good teammate.” The week’s events continue Monday at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, where Carrasco, Zacharof, and former Knock Down and Skin em' team members will discuss Native representation in baseball and their work with Indigenous youth. The program will also feature a demonstration of Miachee, a traditional Indigenous ball game from Southwest Alaska, led by Sugpiat artist Andrew Abyo. According to the America250-Alaska Commission, Alaska chose baseball as the focus of its commemoration to highlight the state’s contributions to American history and culture while inspiring future generations to learn about Alaska’s past. Events continue through July 4 in Anchorage and Fairbanks. A bill that would change the dynamic between the feds and tribal nations on the cleanup of abandoned mines moved forward this week. KNAU's Chris Clements has more. The Legacy Mine Cleanup Act got a House committee hearing Wednesday with bipartisan support in Congress and the backing of the Navajo Nation. It would create a new office within the U.S> Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to better track mine sites that need cleanup. And it would prioritize cutting edge cleanup methods like one backed by the company DISA Tech, which involves harvesting uranium mine waste so it can be reused. But that cleanup method has faced pushback from environmental advocates, who say it is still experimental, uses too much water, and does not fully clean up contamination. National Parks Service (NPS) employee testing for elevated radiation levels at the Orphan Mine Site on and below the South Rim in Grand Canyon National Park. (Courtesy NPS) Besides looking into new remediation methods, the bill would also give tribes more funding for cleaning up abandoned hard rock mines. The federal government estimates there are about 140,000 such mines in the U.S. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. Knock Down the House is a 2019 American documentary film directed by Rachel Lears.[1] It revolves around the 2018 congressional primary campaigns of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Amy Vilela, Cori Bush and Paula Jean Swearengin, four progressive Democrats endorsed by Justice Democrats and Brand New Congress who ran in that year's midterm elections.[2][3] The film had its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2019.[4][5] It was released on May 1, 2019, by Netflix[6] and received acclaim from critics.SynopsisThe film follows four female Democrats who decided to run for Congress in the 2018 United States elections: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Amy Vilela of Nevada, Cori Bush of Missouri, and Paula Jean Swearengin of West Virginia. The film charts their campaigns in their respective Democratic primaries. The four candidates each run grassroots campaigns against long-time incumbents.[7] Vilela, Bush, and Swearengin lost their primary elections, but Ocasio-Cortez won her primary and went on to win the general election. However, two years later in 2020, during the next Congressional election cycle, Bush went on to win her primary and the general election in Missouri's 1st congressional district. Swearengin was the Democratic nominee for West Virginia's Senate race, where she lost to the incumbent by over 40 points. Four years later in 2024, Bush also lost renomination.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

As the Trump administration scrubs Jan 6 records, issues mass pardons to over 1,200 rioters, and faces lawsuits from those same insurrectionists accusing police of excessive force, an Off-Off-Broadway comedy confronts the insurrection's chaotic aftermath with sharp laughs. No one else has satirized Jan 6 in a stoner rock-n-roll situation-comedy play. Come and Knock Down My Door, written by film and theater artist and satirist Alex Emanuel (son of famous political illustrator Robert Grossman) and directed by actor/director Philip Cruise, premieres May 7-30 at NYC's The Gene Frankel Theatre (16 performances, $35). Set on Jan 7, 2021, it follows a pot-dealing Trump supporter returning to his liberal NYC roommates amid FBI fears - hilarity through the heartache of a divided America. Director Cruise notes: “If I can make the audience laugh while calling attention to the piece of history that so many are trying to rewrite and erase, I'm doing my job as a theatre producer and as an American.” Playwright Emanuel adds: “Now is surely the time for it. We need to laugh, and we need to be reminded of how we got here. Like political caricature lampoons figures, a situation like Jan 6 and its aftermath exists to be ridiculed. Our late-night comedians are losing their jobs now and we cannot only depend on them.” Audience feedback from readings has been glowing: “Brought a light touch to a heavy subject with no loss of impact or weight,” “A very funny, prescient and somewhat terrifying play,” and “Come and Knock Down My Door could be an underground sensation!” Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Should I Renovate, Extend, or Knock Down and Rebuild? Feasibility Studies Explained.

Get It Right with Undercover Architect

Hello! This is Episode 396, and I want to talk about something that comes up at the very beginning of almost every project I hear about. It usually sounds like one of these questions. "Should I add a second storey, or extend out the back?" Or… "Is it worth renovating what we have, or should we just knock it down and build new?" Or… "We've got a blank block - do we go with a volume builder, or work with an architect or designer and do a custom project?" [For all resources mentioned in this podcast and a free, downloadable PDF transcript, head to www.undercoverarchitect.com/396] And what all of these questions have in common is this: they come from a place of genuinely not knowing which direction to go. There are multiple options on the table. Each of them could potentially work. They can vary in budget and timelines and team structure and approvals. But you don't yet have enough information to choose between them with confidence. And so what a lot of people do - and I completely understand the impulse - is to just pick one. Pick the option that seems most obvious, or most affordable, or the one that someone recommended, and start moving forward. Because forward feels like progress. And staying in that uncomfortable place of not knowing can feel like being stuck. But here's what I've seen happen, again and again. People who make that early decision without doing the groundwork first often find themselves... sometimes months in, sometimes with significant professional fees already spent... discovering that there was a better option they hadn't fully explored. Or a constraint they didn't know about. Or a cost they hadn't factored in. And by that point, going back feels devastating. But pushing forward doesn't feel right either. In this episode, I want to help you avoid that. I want to share a way of thinking about this phase of your project that can genuinely change your experience of it. And I want to give you a clear, practical process for how to navigate this decision-making period... so that when you do commit to a direction, you can do it with real confidence and strategy. Have you ever heard the saying that partial obedience is disobedience? In this episode, we're diving deep into what it means to be fully surrendered in your faith and your business — and confronting the "high places" we've left standing and how these are idols holding back our businesses. Drawing from 1 and 2 Kings, we explore the pattern of kings who followed God but stopped short of full obedience. Sound familiar? As ambitious, faith-driven women in business, we do the same thing — and it's costing us. In This Episode: What "high places" are and why they matter for your business today The biblical kings who got it right — and what set them apart How money, comparison, and chasing rooms can become modern-day idols Why partial obedience is still disobedience How God provides in ways we cannot see or comprehend Scripture References: 2 Kings 18 — King Hezekiah removes the high places 2 Kings 22 — King Josiah's full obedience 2 Kings 3 — King Joram's partial obedience 2 Kings 12 — King Joash does right, yet the high places remain 1 Samuel 8 — Israel demands a king, wanting to be like other nations 1 Kings 17 — Elijah, the ravens, and the widow; God's unexpected provision Genesis 3 — Adam, Eve, and the original high place Key Takeaway: When God's people obey Him fully, they are invincible. He doesn't just provide in addition — He provides in multiplication. The question isn't whether God can provide. The question is whether you're willing to knock down everything standing in your way of full obedience. This Week's Challenge: Take time to reflect: What are the high places that you haven't knocked down yet? Send me a DM or email and let me know — I'd love to walk through this with you. Coming up next: We kick off the annual Money Matters series — one of the high places we get real and honest about as Christian women in business. You don't want to miss it! God made you ambitious. He did not make you for business as usual. What happens when a couple survives a major crisis, only to be thrown back into their negative cycle by a simple text message? This week, after Bethany recounts a traumatic car accident and Brian's initial, supportive response, a seemingly small conflict about a baby monitor spirals into a "knock-down, drag-out" fight. We dive deep into the difficult work of co-regulation when both partners are hurting. We explore the raw hurt behind Brian's sarcasm—his pain of feeling controlled, questioned as a parent, and like a "second-class citizen." We also uncover why Bethany's instinct to explain and rationalize, a lifelong strategy to manage overwhelming emotions, lands as a dismissal and keeps them stuck. This extended session highlights the essential, messy process of learning to attend to one partner's pain at a time, even when you're drowning in your own. Can you put your hurt aside, just for a moment, to truly see the person across from you? It's hard, but necessary work if healing is the goal. This week's prompt: Reflect on your last conflict. When you felt hurt, what was your go-to protective move (sarcasm, explaining, silence)? What feeling were you trying to communicate underneath that defense? Send your responses to this prompt or any questions/comments you have about the podcast via email or voice note to support@thesecurerelationship.com. It's tempting at times to read the Bible through a human-centric lens, as though we are the main character in each narrative. But in so doing, we're in danger of missing the larger point of stories like Joshua and the city of Jericho.

This Episodes Questions: Brians Questions: Hello Guy, Huy, and Sean, I have two questions. 1) I'd like to hear your thoughts on your workshop maintenance routines. Are there yearly, monthly, project-ly routines to the maintenance and cleaning you do in your shops? Marc What are your woodworking goals for 2025? Brian Guys Questions: Hey Guys,  First, thanks for the fantastic podcast.  I always enjoy  listening to you gents so much so that I've managed to get through the entirety of your past episodes. A little background: I work in a small space and am consider going with a combo jointer - planer can leave me some room for something else. I am not a a professional woodworker but an enthusiastic hobbyist.  Right now I have a bench top 10" jointer (I definitely understand why Guy pretty much hates these things) and a DeWalt 735 planer.  I'm happy with the DeWalt, but the jointer can get finicky if it's moved or looked at. I believe I heard in a past episode that Huy is using a Hammer A3-31 jointer-planer combo.     Huy - are you in fact using a Hammer combo machine?  And if so, are you happy with it?   Is the fence pretty solid?  If you were to buy again, what else would you consider?  My other option is maybe a non-combo mid-price point  Powermatic or Grizzly jointer.  Any other brands to consider?  It's a tough choice - spend more money but use less space or spend less money and use up more of that limited space.  Would appreciate hearing from each of you on this topic.  Apologies for my long winded questions,  but this feels like a big decision.  Thanks again for the excellent show. Ron As always thank you for the podcast and sharing your knowledge.  This one may be mainly for Guy as I know he's a proponent of the Lamello Zeta P2.  Like Huy I'm a bit of a tool junkie, and can't pass up a new one.  I was never happy with my old Porter Cable biscuit Joiner, so I gravitated to the Domino DF500 which has been a great tool.  I came across a deal where someone was selling a complete Zeta P2 system so I picked it up.  I've watched a number of the videos guy posted using the Zeta P2 and so far she seems like a great machine, but now I have some questions that I was hoping you could point me in the right direction: 1)      Is there any reason to keep my old Porter Cable Biscuit joiner?  2)      I have the knock down domino accessories that I've used on some builds in the past.  Do you have a guide line or any thoughts on when you would use the Domino vs. the Lamello? Thanks again, Doug Huy's Questions: Hello gentlemen, since you have been asking for questions, here are some for you regarding tools for projects, projects for tools, and tools AS projects. First, tools for projects. Thinking back my early days in woodworking, there were many times when I would have an idea for a project that exceeded the capabilities of my limited tool collection. Some of these were a basic as ripping a board or making an accurate cross cut. I managed to get by with the most basic table saw that I could afford and an old circular saw. Since a lot has changed in the 30 years since I started, like track saws and set-ups like MFT and Kreg's table setups, what would you guys recommend for the basic tools for someone starting out? Second, projects for tools. As I started to improve my skills as a woodworker and more tools became available, I felt the need to add tools to my shop. To help justify the purchases, I found myself coming up with projects that would be easier if I had that "special tool/bit/blade."  Have you every made a project specifically designed to justify a tool purchase, or is it just me? If so,  what was the project and what was the tool? Third, tools AS projects. A few years ago I started to get more into hand tool woodworking after inheriting some of my grandfather's collection. I also began frequenting a couple of used tool stores in Maine while on vacation where I picked up some vintage panel saws and most of a Stanley 78 rabbet plane. With some cleaning and sharpening I began to really appreciate the use of hand tools and began looking for a used router plane. I don't know if it was just the area that I live in (New England), but there are very few used router planes to be found, and the few that I did find were almost as much as a new one. Determined to add a router plane to my arsenal I went online, found multiple different options for making my own, and then settled on the Paul Sellers' kit for the hardware and using hickory and cherry for the base. I found out to be a very fun project that taught me some new skills, and I use the tool very frequently. Have you guys done similar projects to make a useful tool that also improved your skills? Thank you for you time. Joshua The Black Dog Woodworks Hello again gentlemen.  You guys are the best at answering questions.  My third question involves making two 11" by 11 3/4" panel doors that slide left and right in a groove cut into the top and bottom of the frame.  The door panels are made of 1/2" MDF but with a 3" wide piece of Poplar that is glued to the top and bottom ends of the MDF.  This is to allow for cutting the rabbet into wood instead of MDF.  The rabbet will slide in upper and lower grooves in the frame. I created my own veneer of Walnut in the front face and Poplar in the back face because I'm cheap and the back won't show.  Both veneers are 7/64" thick and the long grain runs left to right (same direction of the door travel).  I used Titebond Veneer glue and glued both faces at once. I sandwiched the assembly between two pieces of plywood and clamped and weighted the whole thing. After 24 hours, I removed the clamps and saw that the panel had cupped in the direction across the grain (the same as a 12" wide board would cup).  I don't understand why it cupped as I thought MDF wouldn't allow that to happen.  I did use too much glue on the walnut side as there was a lot of squeeze-out.  I backed off the amount of glue on the Poplar side.  Was the veneer too thick?  Should I have ran the back face veneer perpendicular to the front face instead of in the same direction?  Did the two 3" wide Poplar pieces somehow contribute to the cupping?  I am waiting on doing the second door panel until I hear your opinions on this. Thank you for a great podcast.  I hope you all keep it going. Anthony

Is there a cartridge that will reliably knock a deer or elk or bear over? Not unless it's named Ford, Chevy, or Dodge. Or maybe Freight Train. This episode takes a candid look at the idea of "knock-down power," mythbusting the notion and detailing how to determine a cartridge with real authority.  We define and explore kinetic energy, the TKO formula, momentum, and of course compare the numbers generated by popular cartridges such as the .30-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .375 Magnum.  Next we detail common visible impact reactions and explain what they say about the bullet used and the impact location of the shot. True stories of mule deer, elk, caribou, moose, whitetails, and more are told to showcase each situation... Including lung shots, heart shots, gut shots, and spine/nervous system impacts.  There's no such thing as knock-down power, folks. But there's SOMETHING. This episode digs deep into just what it is.
