Karla Hackman's path into metalsmithing began in the most unexpected of ways—through a background in academia, ceramics, and a love of collecting stones on long hikes. Karla eventually traded in a steady career in higher education for the leap into jewelry, and over the last twelve years she's built a body of work that balances the organic and the architectural, the soft and the strong. In our conversation, Karla shares how her surroundings in the Southwest shape her collections, the inward journey of self discovery that art has taken her on, and the ways she finds both grounding and freedom at the bench. We also talk about the realities of making a living as an independent artist—navigating production work alongside one-of-a-kind pieces, honoring exploration, and letting your creative voice evolve over time. It's a thoughtful, down-to-earth conversation about what it means to make with intention, and I think you'll really enjoy it.Follow Karla...Karla on Instagram: @karlahackmanKarla's Website: karlahackman.comLove the Podcast?Support an episode: Click here to learn more!Without your support I couldn't continue the Slowmade Podcast. In today's world, technology has woven its way into nearly every aspect of our lives and work. The fashion industry is always looking for ways to make things faster and automate work that always used to be done by humans – but not Jackie. She's been working with hand weavers in Bangladesh for over three decades and is more passionate about the future of fair trade, hand-crafted fabrics than ever. Jackie teaches designers how to design their own handwoven fabrics and helps them get their textiles made through her business Motif Handmade. In episode 120, Jackie shares how designing your own handwoven textiles is more accessible to you as an independent designer than you might realize, how she's seen fair trade sourcing change lives, and the value that threads through all of Jackie's work. Jackie Corlett is the founder of Motif Handmade, a Brit who swapped the rolling hills of England for decades in vibrant Bangladesh, and now calls the wide-open prairies of Illinois home. As a textile designer, Jackie's lifelong passion is for handcrafted fabrics and the remarkable artisans who bring them to life. Over the years, she's helped students, designers and brands weave artisanal goods into their collections, creating beauty with purpose. Today, through her course KIND FABRIC, Jackie's mission is to empower designers with the skills and confidence to develop their own fair trade certified, custom fabrics and finished goods. She believes sourcing can be 100% transparent, giving you 100% peace of mind. From fibre to fabric to finished product, Jackie champions a world where creativity isn't just about making things ... it's about making a difference. This episode explores: Fitting the customer Why handwoven textiles are more accessible to you as an independent designer than you might realize The two big shifts that have accelerated the demand and accessibility of fair trade textiles over Jackie's career Fitting the lifestyle What captured Jackie's interest back in 1989 that started her on the path towards the work she is doing today How fair trade sourcing changes us as designers How long it takes to design your own handwoven fabrics and get them made How the MOQs and cost of handwoven fabrics compare to other fabric options Fitting the values The thing that matters most to Jackie in her work Why creating products with integrity is easier now than ever before The ways that Fast Fashion mindsets creep into our work The real impact of fair trade People and resources mentioned in this episode: Motif Handmade website Motif Handmade Instagram Jackie's email Jackie's LinkedIn Kind Fabric course Previous How Fitting guests who use Motif fabrics in their collection: Mrs. Emily and Glean & Grace Cyclo recycled fiber yarns Plaidmaker plaid design tool Future Fabrics Expo Do you want fashion business tips and resources like this sent straight to your inbox? This week we're focusing on Suzy's recent Sniffari in Brighton, this time focusing on her visit to @soliflore_store, owned and run by Sarah. We will also be revealing our favourite of the new @the_rac_on_teur fragrances we've been exploring the last few weeks, and you can vote for your fave in the poll on our Instagram page, @onthescentpodcast. In this episode we also mention the wonderful kit Nicola's put together for those who share her anxiety about flying. Find out more about Zen in the Sky kits @outspokenbeautynicola. But now, let's flit to the fragrant trip to Brighton, and find out which scents Suzy fell for…Soliflore is one of those beautifully curated, cosy shops where walking through the door feels like coming home. Sarah's eye for design and detail is exquisite, with a large central table featuring an ever-evolving showcase of scents, and instead of blotters, there are silken handkerchiefs (stored in vintage tins) sprayed with each fragrance. Featuring a curated selection honed to what Sarah knows her customers are looking for, including beloved brands and some exclusives & indie houses Suzy had never heard of before, it's a place you could happily while away several hours sniffing your way around. And there are gorgeous cards, soaps, chocolates and great gift-y items to tempt every taste! In the short amount of time Suzy had, here are three fragrances she found at Soliflore and immediately fell for…@reserve_en_afrique Aube Lumineuse“The sun rises, flooding the great expanses of the sweeping plains, gracing the wilderness with its wash of pure light. The dawn's intense rays awaken these spectacular lands. Great herds rove majestically in the distance. Bright blue birds perch in the flat-topped acacia trees while giraffes stroll with leisurely grace. The sky is clear. The air is fresh. The fragrance opens with a luminous fresh burst of citrusy notes of Tangerine (South Africa) and Blood Orange (South Africa). A bright heart of fresh Orange Flower (Morocco) and zesty Ginger (Nigeria) is supported by woody base of Cedarwood Atlas (Morocco).”@saintritaparlor Signature Fragrance “Finest quality parfum. Limited unisex fragrance comprised of over 18 rare and organic essential oils. Handmade by Saint Rita Parlor in Los Angeles, California.Rita would tend to her rose garden whilst smoking a hand-rolled tobacco cigarette and drinking a whiskey and water.Notes: Whiskey, Tobacco, and Rose”@arquiste Almond Suede“By Calice Becker. Top notes are Bitter Almond, Honeycomb, Bergamot and Pink Pepper; middle notes are Concrete, Saffron, Neroli, Orange Blossom and Labdanum; base notes are Suede, Pine tar, Sugar and Vanilla Absolute. Almond Suede by Arquiste is a unisex gourmand leather fragrance inspired by Medieval Andalusia and its refined gourmand culture. It balances almond marzipan and suede leather, capturing the essence of the city of Córdoba and almond sweets.”Next week we'll be catching up with Part 2 of Suzy's Brighton Sniffari, and finding out what she went mad for @wild_iris_perfumery!#ad Meanwhile, we promised to pick just *one* favourite each of the fragrances we've loved exploring in our Raconteur Discovery Set II boxes, featuring the new ‘Australiscious' collection, and after MUCH prevarication, Suzy chose *Daintree Rain Tea* and Nicola chose *Killr Vanillr*! Don't forget to try code onthescent10 @bloomperfumery for 10 percent off discovery sets and full sizes (not sure how long code will still be active, as sets sold out a couple of times, but worth trying when checking out!)

Sharon Johnson gave a woman a red flower and a butterfly sticker at the library. She didn't know it then, but she was on her way to end her life. That small act of kindness stopped her. She went home, asked for help, and said no one had ever done something like that for her. That moment changed both of their lives—and sparked Sharon's mission to spread hope through kindness. Sharon overcame homelessness and cancer and is now a passionate advocate for others facing similar challenges. Today, Sharon handcrafts vegan soaps and uses the proceeds to support Handmade Soaps 4 Hope!
