Every flower has a root—and so does every artist. In Episode 171 of Paper Talk Podcast, we - Quynh Nguyen, Sara Kim, and Jessie Chui - sat down to reflect on the winding paths that led us to paper flowers. From music studios to courtrooms, finance offices to wedding aisles, our stories are as unique as the blooms we now craft. What binds them together is the quiet but powerful realization that creative joy, purpose, and community can truly transform a life. “Without knowing why, it's hard to say yes to the right opportunities.” - Jessie Here, we share highlights from that conversation, in the hope that our stories will inspire you to reflect on your own journey and perhaps even find or realign with your own "why." Sara's Journey: From Violin to Petal Sara Kim, founder of Handmade by Sara Kim, began as a trained violinist. "My creative outlet from my job as a musician was making crafts," she shared. What started as simple paper cards and flowers sold for a dollar each eventually blossomed into a business that caught the attention of Anthropologie, thanks to a single Instagram tag. She emphasized the value of small beginnings, community, and leaning into joy. “It wasn't until I came back to paper flowers that I found my true why: the simple magic of turning paper into something meaningful.” Jessie's Journey: From Courtroom to Creation Jessie Chui, of Crafted to Bloom, had a thriving career in law, but a period of personal grief changed her perspective. The passing of her beloved aunt led her to reassess what truly mattered. “I wanted to express myself, to create beauty and hope.” Paper flowers became her therapy, starting with bouquets for her wedding. Over time, her practice evolved into intentional, small-batch artistry that allowed her to prioritize her family and mental well-being. “I couldn't live by deadlines anymore. I needed my business to align with the values of my life.” Quynh's Journey: From Excel Sheets to Exhibition Spaces Quynh Nguyen, founder of Pink and Posey, came from a finance and event planning background. Her journey began when a friend asked her to create paper flowers for a wedding, using sheet music and school colors. “At the time, I had never made a paper flower in my life.” That first commission sparked a series of commercial opportunities, and with her husband's encouragement, she leaned into the work full time. “I wanted to build a community because the more people making paper flowers, the more visibility we have—and the more we all thrive.” Her business acumen and deep love for collaboration have shaped not only her art but also projects like the Paper Talk Podcast, her new book, and the Paper to Profits program. Common Threads: Why Your Why Matters Through all our stories, one theme echoes loudest: finding your "why" is the key to building a sustainable, fulfilling creative life. Whether you're starting out, navigating a career shift, or simply craving deeper meaning in your work, we encourage you to reflect on: What lights you up? What kind of life do you want your art to support? Who do you want to impact? And if you don't know yet? That's okay. Your why can evolve. As Sara said, “Sometimes your why is simply: I like making beautiful things.” That's enough to begin. What inspires you most about Naomy's story? We'd love to hear your thoughts - share your insights with us on Instagram @papertalkpodcast or join our Facebook community discussions. Stay tuned for more inspiring episodes, and don't forget to subscribe to Paper Talk wherever you listen to podcasts.

Cursed Objects: Why Haunted Dolls and Jewelry Attract Dark Energy More Than Anything Else” Have you ever inherited an old ring and suddenly felt like your luck vanished overnight? Or maybe you brought home an antique doll that now seems to move when no one's looking…? You're not alone. In this week's episode of Psychic Christine Wallace Mystical Charms and Things, we're diving into the chilling topic of cursed objects and haunted items, with a special focus on possessed jewelry and dolls—the two objects that most often seem to attract negative spiritual energy. Why Do Certain Objects Hold Dark Energy? Throughout history, dolls and jewelry have been the center of supernatural disturbances, spiritual attachments, and paranormal hauntings. These objects—often deeply personal or used in rituals—act like energy sponges, absorbing trauma, grief, jealousy, or even dark intentions from their original owners or past events. While not every old item is cursed, spiritually charged objects like: • Heirloom rings • Antique brooches • Handmade dolls • Family relics …can carry lingering vibrations, sometimes resulting in sleepless nights, bad luck, emotional turmoil, or worse. If you've experienced: • A sudden shift in energy after acquiring an object • Strange occurrences in your home • Persistent bad luck or health issues with no clear cause • Unexplained emotions or nightmares… You may be dealing with a spiritually active or cursed item. ⸻ Need Help with Negative Energy or Paranormal Activity? The show runs through May 25. Visitors can enter the gallery by calling or buzzing the office, open Thursdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. A poetry and potluck event will be held May 18.Mojsilov explains that Degener's work highlights endangered plant species. The exhibition includes 18 framed handmade paper works, with pulp manipulated to form plant imagery. Eight handmade planters, constructed from up-cycled wood, spell out “in danger.” Suspended discs depicting endangered plants, made from frozen paper, gradually melt into the planters, which are seeded with native flowers that will grow over the exhibit's duration.Krug said: I could go on and on about Amanda's artwork, because she's part scientist. She's a chemist. She researches all her subjects to the T. She's a specialist in handmade paper and the history of handmade paper, she collects fibers from all over the world.— Ilene Krug MojsilovA 21st Century Take on Theater of the AbsurdTheater maker Harry Waters, Jr. attended the opening night of Pangea World Theater's staging of “Rhinoceros,” directed by Dipankar Mukherjee. The absurdist play by French playwright Eugène Ionesco was written in 1958 and follows the transformation of a town's residents into rhinoceroses — all except one, the least heroic character. The show runs through April 19 at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis.Waters praised the production's creativity: inventive lighting, a soundscape of Indigenous music, strong choreography and a diverse cast of professional and amateur actors.Harry said: The gift, I would have to say, of what Dipankar gives to this adaptation [is] that it starts huge, and then, as the story goes, it winnows down to this very simple, important issue of the one human being that's standing in resistance to all the totalitarianism and the conformity ... how are we also taking our own stands in spite of everything that's being thrown [at us] that really allows us to know that we're not crazy, that it is not insane that you're standing strong. So that's a conceptual thing that I was really quite pleased to see without being beaten over the head by it.— Harry Waters, Jr.A Multimedia Symphony in the South MetroRetired attorney and former St. Olaf Choir singer Maren Swanson of Burnsville is excited for a joint choral performance at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Prior Lake this Saturday at 4 p.m. South Metro Chorale will perform alongside Singers in Accord and Kantorei, with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Kathy Saltzman Romey. The concert features “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci,” a multimedia symphony by Minnesota composer Jocelyn Hagen.Maren said: I heard Jocelyn speak once about having grown up in a musical family in a small town in North Dakota, and about singing and playing piano from the age of three, she said that she lay in bed as a as an older child, hearing orchestral music in her head and wishing she knew how to write the music down. Well now we get to hear the enchanting music in her head. The work has been performed all across the country and internationally. I actually heard it in Croatia in 2023. The libretto features an English translation of select texts from the notebooks of Da Vinci. The score is soaring, sometimes lyrical, sometimes percussive, always gorgeous. The video uses a new technology that allows it to be synced to the nuances of the music as conducted in a live event. In effect, the video is played like an instrument of the orchestra responding to the conductor, and so every performance is spontaneous and unique. The video features an unfolding of text and images from the notebooks and other animated images that bring the music to life.— Maren Swanson

**SMASH** **BREAKS GLASS** Well folks, here we are with another emergency pod, reviewing another one of Heather Henson's Handmade Puppet Dreams films. This time we opted to forgo spinning the wheel to just go ahead and watch a film suggested to us by a friend over on the discord! (shout out to L_Troemel!) For the uninitiated, Handmade Puppet Dreams is a series of short films produced by Heather Henson and her puppet company Ibex Puppetry. Founded in 2004, Handmade puppet dreams has provided the means and exposure for smaller puppet artists to create some truly unique films straight out of their own imaginations. This week the boys will be watching a found object puppet piece based on a Japanese Shinto story called Amaterasu. This one is really special, with beautiful found objects telling a classic mythological story of feuding gods. We hope you enjoy the unique short film from Handmade Puppet Dreams! Tanya Huang shares her entrepreneurial journey, from her experience on Dragon's Den to running a successful ring business. We talk about how customization is another barrier from the competition and how she decided to move on to customized products. We also compare Amazon vs Etsy, and how the two shape up for customized and handmade products. Need funding for your Canadian Amazon business? Not sure if you should use a Canadian corporation or U.S. LLC to form your company? We'll cover these questions and more in our new course, Start and Grow Your FBA Business as a Canadian. Get early access now! The Big Takeaways Customization is a really big consideration to customers and helps your products stand out in e-commerce platforms. Understanding customer needs drives product innovation. Etsy provides valuable insights into market research for customized products. Amazon's interface may not be ideal for customization. Etsy's sales have declined but are still higher than pre-COVID levels. New competitors like Temu are changing the e-commerce landscape, bringing Etsy's market share down. Etsy shoppers seek unique, personalized items over mass-produced products. Customization on Amazon is possible but comes with certain challenges. Etsy's decline may be due to increased competition and changing consumer preferences. Sales dynamics differ significantly between Etsy and Amazon. Etsy requires more attention to customer service and product uniqueness, while Amazon requires quick deliveries and cheaper products. What is a transiting brown dwarf, why are they so rare, and how do you find them? Equally important, how do you make a good French macaron? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astronomer and astrophysicist Dr. Theron Carmichael. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing: a recent paper in the Astrophysical Journal possibly linking a supernova that took place millions of years ago and bombarded Earth with cosmic rays and radioactive iron with a flurry of virus mutation that took place in deep ancient lakes on our planet. After Theron brings up the Chicxulub meteor impact (the one that spelled trouble for dinosaurs) and how astronomical events can affect the evolution of life here on Earth, we naturally turn to the effects of extreme radiation events and… the mighty Marvel mutants themselves, the X-Men! Then it's time to talk about Dr. Carmichael's bread and butter: detecting and categorizing transiting brown dwarfs, an exceedingly rare form of the “failed stars” which actually orbit other stars. Theron explains that while we know how stars and planets form, we don't exactly understand the formation of brown dwarfs, which exist in the gray region between a star and a planet. Allen reminds us how protoplanetary discs form, while Theron points out that the distinctions may not be as clear as we used to think. Our first student question comes from Ani, who asks, “There are a lot more small, faint stars than big bright stars. Does that mean there are a huge number of brown dwarfs in the galaxy?” Yes, according to Dr. Carmichael. And not only are there more of them, but Theron explains that they last longer, too. Finding them is challenging, but it's become easier thanks to TESS, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission that's been running for over 7 years, well past its operational lifespan. Our next student question comes from Josie, who asks, “Could there be life on brown dwarfs?” While brown dwarfs are colder than stars, they are still too hot to form and sustain the molecules we believe are necessary for life. And while those molecules are in fact present in the atmosphere of brown dwarfs – along with titanium oxide clouds – the pressure and temperature conditions of brown dwarfs make life as we know it unlikely. Theron explains that the atmospheric conditions of brown dwarfs are not dissimilar to Jupiter, as opposed to those on Jovian moons like Europa that we're going to explore when the Europa Clipper reaches its destination in 2030. After that, Theron tells us about the annual MIT Mystery Hunt, his long-time love of baking, and the astronomical value of macarons. (For his French macaron recipe, please visit our Patreon page.) Allen shares how he has made cookies conforming to the Einstein tile, and Charles mentions a few scientists who also love to bake. Theron explains how baking and brown dwarf research use the same parts of his brain. We even get to see a video clip of him making macarons! To end the show, Theron tells us about the international working group he helps lead focused on learning more about transiting brown dwarfs. If you'd like to know more about Dr. Theron Carmichael, you can follow him on Twitter/X @TherBaer or his website, www.theroncarmichael.com. IT'S WIDELY KNOWN that the first newspaper west of the Mississippi River was the short-lived Oregon Spectator, which published its first issue on Feb. 5, 1846. But that's only true if you define “newspaper” very narrowly. In truth, there was an earlier publication that met every definition of a newspaper but one ... specifically, it was “printed” by hand, every copy, with pen and ink — longhand. No printing press was involved. This early newspaper was called the Flumgudgeon Gazette and Bumble Bee Budget, and it first appeared in the spring of 1844 just in time for the first legislative council of the Oregon Provisional Government. Its editor identified himself only as “The Curl-Tail Coon,” and it's not entirely clear if that was just for fun, or for protection from revenge by those whose feathers he ruffled in its pages. It was a tri-weekly, with a press run of roughly 12 copies (written out longhand, remember, and with original art depicting its author hand-drawn individually on the front page of each by a friend of the editor, a German artist named Springer). Now, “Flumgudgeon Gazette and Bumble Bee Budget” is a very long name, so to save time we are going to refer to it by a shortened version, in the spirit of Windy City residents who call their daily “The Trib” instead of “The Chicago Tribune” or Stumptowners calling theirs “The Big O” instead of — well, “The Oregonian,” of course ... In the present case, we're going with “The Gudge.” The Gudge was a mercilessly satirical publication. Its motto, printed prominently on the front page of every copy beneath the flag, read “A Newspaper of the Salamagundi Order and Devoted to Scratching and Stinging the Follies of the Age.” Above that appeared a drawing, by Herr Springer, of the Curltail Coon himself, with the caption “Don't stroke us backwards! There is enough of villainy going on to raise our bristles without that!” If the editor was pseudonymous, so were the legislators he lampooned — which makes it a bit hard to dope out who was who in the little bit of surviving text we have from the Aug. 20, 1845, issue. Historian Lawrence Powell suggests that “The Big Brass Gun” may have been Jesse Applegate's nickname, but confesses himself baffled as to who “The Blueback Terrapin” was. (Oregon City, Clackamas County; 1840s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/2412a1007a.flumgudgeon-gazette-first-newspaper-handwritten.678.078.html)
