Independent Film Focus focuses on talking to filmmakers and highlighting their projects that might not have a wide release or are independently backed. In today's episode Daniel chats to Jamie Kastner, the director of the documentary, The Spoils. The Spoils explores the contemporary controversies surrounding the restitution of Nazi-looted art—specifically the story of Dr. Max Stern, a German-Jewish dealer who fled to Montreal during WWII and went on to become one of Canada's most influential figures in the art world. Jamie chats about what led him to making a film about Max Stern and how he tries to leave his bias at the door when making documentaries with different sides to the same story. Films discussed during this episode: The Spoils The Monuments Men The Woman in Gold K*ke like Me The Spoils is out in theaters now across Canada and is being distributed by Vortex Media. VOD details will follow in the coming weeks. If you have any questions or comments, or would like to recommend a movie we cover next please reach out to us on social media. Twenty four years after being asked by Maximus "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?", we are asking the same question about the legacy sequel "Gladiator II". Director Ridley Scott returns to the floor of the Coliseum to once again entertain us with battles, violence, political intrigue and even some returning characters. Daniel Chadwick-Shubat of Get Reel Movies, Aaron Neuwirth from We Live Entertainment, and Nicole Ayers of the MadLabPost are here to let you know what they thought of this extravaganza of Roman mayhem and pseudo history. Russell Crowe is not back, but his persona hangs over this film in so many ways. Is Denzel Washington enough to make this movie satisfy the crowd? You will have to watch and listen to find out.
In this episode Daniel and Mason look at the true story behind the first episode of Saturday Night Live, Saturday Night. With some potential star making performances from the cast we talk about how this movie came out of nowhere and isn't getting quite as much buzz as it should. We decide to do a bit of traveling with new release THIRST STREET, which has us discussing home invasion films of a different sort. One involves the perpetually anxious Hugh Grant having his routine put upon by a beautiful and successful movie star, and the other involves this podcast's personal sex icon of Mike White. If that's not a strange enough mashup for you... well, come back next episode! But you'll miss Dan from Get Reel Movies as he reacts to the trailer for this new sex thriller, as well as the usual "obnoxious Americans." Which one can only presume will be the words used in our very first iTunes review. ALSO: Sexy obnoxious Americans. Just wanted to reiterate that for the SEO results we are after with this film podcast. Facebook/Twitter/Instagram: @projectingfilm Hosts: Chris @Following_Films Mike @warmachinehorse
On this episode we turn to a baby podcaster himself, Dan of Get Reel Movies, a film site that caters to millenials. We ask him his take on Edgar Wright's version of the stoic getaway driver in BABY DRIVER, under the assumption that the hosts of this show are just too damn old to get it. However a love for Ryan Gosling and the film DRIVE knows no age barriers as we rave about that film and then get into the meat of modern online film criticism: which driver has the best playlist for conducting cool chase sequences? All of this and we find out that Canadians aren't that nice in the latest episode of ORIGINAL REMAKE. ALSO: Be sure to check out Dan's interview with DRIVE screenwriter Hossein Amini on his podcast GET REEL MOVIES. For episode 300 we did not select that particular Zack Snyder "classic" but we do have a number of guests doing their best readings from that film. Dwight of The Broken Brain, Dave of Pop Culture Case Study, Jairo of The True Bromance Film Podcast, Jason of Atlantic Screen Connection, Kevin of Cinema Geeks, Daniel of Get Reel Movies, and Jess & Non of Joy Sandwich are all here to blot out the podcast sun as we debate Our Future Identity as seen in new release THE CIRCLE. This disappointment leads us to look back at alternate futures in Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL and Richard Linklater's A SCANNER DARKLY. All of this and a debate on the future of cinema, Netflix, Marvel, podcasting, and the very nature of good and evil as seen in our hosts Chris and Mike. A breezy podcast listen all around. Thanks supporting any of the first 300 episodes, we promise at least two more. Twitter/Instagram/Letterboxd: @warmachinehorse You can also support this show with a donation on Patreon to get extra episodes or to program an episode with a film of your choosing.
In this episode where we compare a comedic caper to it's more toned down remake, we recruit Daniel of GET REEL MOVIES to join in on the heist with us to talk about THE ITALIAN JOB! What starts out is your traditional comparison and discussion leads to allegedly picking on our Canadian friend and his love for Aaron Sorkin.

On this episode we bring in a friendly Canadian podcaster, Daniel of Get Reel Movies and a A Tale of Two Dans, to discuss a not so friendly Canadian film starring Christopher Plummer as a Nazi hunter. This inspires a conversation on two other films about past memories coming back to haunt characters hunting Nazis in Bryan Singer’s APT PUPIL and John Madden’s THE DEBT. But before we get ahead of ourselves and discuss the greatness of Jessica Chastain and Helen Mirren (which is really all we want to do), we talk about the new release REMEMBER.
