Before 1984, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis were known to those who watched Saturday Night Live, rude comedies, or both. But when the little comedy called Ghostbusters, about a ghost containment system and the doofuses who run it, came out, everyone knew who they -oh, and Ernie Hudson- were. The film became a phenomenon. It helped launch the careers of all involved, inspired future ghost hunters, and even took the term 'gatekeeping' to whole new levels when in 2016 fans of the original were threatened by a bunch of females taking over their turf. So why were there only three -four- films made, and is the first film really the only good thing it inspired? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Logan James to help answer the call of just how good a franchise Ghostbusters is. First and foremost, you might notice a change in the lineup of this sequel we were building up to. The podcast addresses that, as well as Adam's Ghostbusters history, before we dig right into Ghostbusters Afterlife, Jason Reitman's sequel (or is it love letter?) to his father Ivan's Ghostbusters legacy. But is it any good? Are the cameos and numerous nods put in the film in the name of member berries enough to please the three hosts? After all, it worked sooo well with 2016's Ghostbusters remake. This is my review of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. First part is spoiler free, second part gets into spoilers (with a fair warning beforehand). Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a 2021 American supernatural comedy film directed by Jason Reitman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Gil Kenan. The film stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd, while Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver reprise their roles from the original films. It is the sequel to Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), both directed by Reitman's father and this film's producer Ivan, and the fourth film overall in the Ghostbusters franchise. Set thirty-two years after the events of the second film, a single mother and her two children move to a small town in Oklahoma, where they discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and their grandfather's secret legacy. Rumors about a “Ghostbusters” sequel have persisted ever since “Ghostbuster II” was released in 1989 including a version penned by Dan Aykroyd that involved the original team traveling to an alternate hellish landscape where the boys in grey would literally battle with the devil. Numerous other versions took shape over the years but each one seemed to stall out after original cast member Bill Murray stated that he just wasn't that interested in coming back for another sequel. The death of Harold Ramis in 2014 also dampened interest in another “Ghostbusters” movie because he had been so instrumental in the first two films both behind and in front of the camera. But then out of nowhere, Jason Reitman — son of original “Ghostbusters” director Ivan Reitman — announced in early 2019 that he was going to direct a new sequel that would carry on the legacy of the original story while also paying homage to the past. While new faces were added to the film, a huge hurdle was cleared when almost all of the original cast members agreed to return after reading the script, which Aykroyd called “beautiful” and “heartfelt” that also “takes the DNA from the first two movies and transfers that directly to the third.” In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to repair the Ecto-1 and make an emergency call to Ray's Occult as we review the 2021 sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”…

We're turning back the clock to 1984 as we talk about "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" with Supervising Sound Editor & Re-Recording Mixer Will Files and Composer Rob Simonsen. Unlike many modern action-adventure films, this team, led by director Jason Reitman, tried to make everything sound as authentically '80s as possible, eschewing modern sound design and film score aesthetics, in order to give the audience an experience reminiscent of the beloved original film (which happened to be directed by Jason's father, Ivan Reitman). The result is a delightful throwback to the action-comedies of yesteryear. And the three of us absolutely NERD OUT today, as we talk about all the ways they pulled this off, from both a technical and aesthetic perspective. "When Jason [Reitman, the director] and we sat down to talk about the movie, he said, 'You've got to put yourself aside. This is... really about being custodians of what was done." So we had a lot of conversations about that and he said, 'I'm telling every department that that is the mission here. It's not to do what necessarily is, like, cool and modern and hip. This is about discovering the original, keeping it, and - where we can - walking forward, but in the clothes of the original.' So, I think it was really important for Jason to signal to everyone, right at the opening logos: 'We got you!'" — Rob Simonsen, Composer, Ghostbusters: Afterlife Be sure to https://www.ghostbusters.com/ (check out Ghostbusters: Afterlife at a Dolby Cinema near you). The Outlaw John Rocha is here with his NON-SPOILER review of GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE. The new film in the Ghostbusters franchise series directed by Jason Reitman and starring Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Sigourney Weaver, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Logan Kim. "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" tells the story of Callie (Carrie Coon), a single mom struggling to survive in Chicago with her two kids, 12-year-old Phoebe (Grace) and 15-year-old Trevor (Wolfhard). When Callie receives news of her long-estranged father's passing - a father she never even knew - she and the kids pack up the Subaru and move to the small midwestern town of Summerville. As the family settles into their "inheritance," a rotting, worthless dirt farm, they soon discover that they have mysterious ties to a team of paranormal investigators called the Ghostbusters, the specter-catching team who saved New York City from supernatural destruction 35 years ago. #GhostbustersAfterlife #Ghostbusters #Ghostbusters3 #FinnWolfhard #CarrieCoon #McKennaGrace #BillMurray #SigourneyWeaver #DanAykroyd #AnniePotts #ErnieHudson #JasonReitman Join The Outlaw's Patreon at: https://patreon.com/JohnRocha The Outlaw John Rocha Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheRochaSays The Outlaw John Rocha Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therochasays/ --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-outlaw-nation-network/support

Fascinated by the paranormal, Dan Aykroyd originally came up with a concept for a movie after reading a story about quantum physics and parapsychology that gave him the idea about trapping ghosts. He was also interested in creating a modern comedic ghost film following in the footsteps of icons such as Abbott and Costello as well as Bob Hope. He wrote the script with plans to star alongside his friend John Belushi and he pitched the idea as “three men who chase ghosts” and basically compared it to pest control for the undead. Of course, Akyroyd's original script also took place in the future and director Ivan Reitman estimated that it would take $300 million to film his version of the movie. That's when Harold Ramis joined the project and helped rework Aykroyd's script with a setting in present day New York. Sadly, Belushi's death forced Aykroyd to look elsewhere for his co-star and that's when he pitched the idea to fellow SNL alum Bill Murray, who agreed to do the film so long as the studio would allow him to remake the movie “The Razor's Edge.” Ramis then decided to star in the film as well after they struggled to find an actor who could portray one particularly brainy character in the script. Principle photography on the film started in October 1983 with the story set around a group of scientists who start a company together in the business of catching ghosts…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to charge our proton packs and roast some Stay Puft marshmallows as we look back at the 1984 classic “Ghostbusters”…
