Welcome to With Priscilla, where we dive into authentic stories that inspire and connect us. Today, I'm thrilled to sit down with Anthony Robles, the NCAA wrestling champion whose journey from Mesa, Arizona, to the top of the sport shines in the 2024 film Unstoppable, now streaming on Amazon Prime. The biopic, produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, stars Jharrel Jerome as Anthony and Jennifer Lopez as his mother, Judy, tracing his path through bullying and family struggles to an undefeated 2011 NCAA title at Arizona State. Anthony even performed his own wrestling stunts, bringing raw authenticity to the screen.
Anthony Robles is an NCAA Division I National Wrestling Champion who achieved extraordinary success despite being born with only one leg. As one of the most inspiring figures in sports history, Anthony dominated collegiate wrestling at Arizona State University, culminating in an undefeated senior season and national championship victory that showcased his remarkable technical skill and mental fortitude. Beyond his athletic achievements, Anthony has become a powerful motivational voice, demonstrating that perceived limitations can become the foundation for unprecedented accomplishment when paired with unwavering determination and the right mindset. The feature film Unstoppable is the true story of Anthony Robles, who became an NCAA Champion despite significant social challenges and having only one leg. A model of what determination and hard work can achieve, Anthony's story is an inspiration for everyone. The film is based on a book Robles wrote along with Austin Murphy. The film features an all-star ensemble cast including Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña with Don Cheadle, and Jennifer Lopez. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. In this episode, Robles explains his thoughts about seeing what he wrote in the book become a feature film. He discusses the issues his family faced, and how the film is about more than just his missing leg. He also revisits points in his life that were depicted in the film, and the challenges he faced while trying to pursue his collegiate wrestling career. He also spoke about his role in helping make the film and the reaction that he received from fans when he was wrestling, as well as the fan reaction he's received since the film was released.
George Thomas and Craig discuss the film "Unstoppable" on Amazon Prime, which tells the story of Anthony Robles, a one-legged wrestler from Arizona State. The film is described as a crowd-pleaser, drawing comparisons to "Rocky," with strong performances from J Lo, Jerrell, and Bobby Kenna Valley. They also touch on "Nickel Boys," which has generated Oscar buzz but faces challenges in gaining traction due to its limited release and artistic style. The conversation shifts to the broader landscape of Oscar contenders, noting the lack of clear favorites and the impact of streaming on film distribution and box office performance.
