Dark Waters (2019), directed by Todd Haynes, tells the real-life story of how a lawyer, Rob Bilott (Mark Ruffalo), waged a twenty-year battle to hold the DuPont corporation accountable for contaminating a local water supply with carcinogenic chemicals that poisoned tens of thousands of people. While Bilott is ultimately able to achieve some degree of compensation and justice for the victims, the film shows the challenges of litigating against a powerful company bent on denying responsibility and covering up its misconduct. Devil's urine. That's what Dupont employees called PFAS. These toxic, human made forever chemicals are now in the blood of almost every human on the planet. They are found in drinking water around the world, even Antarctica. And they are used in a broad range of consumer products, like non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing, waterproof items, dental floss, and even medical masks. These are only a few examples of many. This group of toxic chemicals, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), permanently concentrates in your body and the environment. You can't get rid of them. In fact, they bioaccumulate, meaning they get worse and worse. The public awareness from uncovering of the truth behind Dupont's misdeeds now contaminating much of the planet is tantamount to this generation's Silent Spring. Our guest Rob Bilott is very much a Rachel Carson sort of figure who has stood up to the chemical industry as the lead attorney to bring light to the dangers of PFAS and its many variations. He fought and won a 20+ year battle against Dupont for the poisoning of over 70,000 people in West Virginia and Ohio. His work was even captured in the 2019 feature film, Dark Waters where he was portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. Rob has continued his groundbreaking work and is looking at the potential of a nationwide class action lawsuit as newer versions of PFAS emerge, unregulated and as dangerous as ever. In this interview from Summer 2022, we explore the history of PFAS, what exposure means, where it can be found, and what we can do. Rob Bilott is a partner in the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky offices of the law firm, Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP [https://www.taftlaw.com/people/robert-a-bilott], where he has practiced in the Environmental and Litigation Groups for over 31 years. During that time, Rob has handled and led some of the most novel and complex cases in the country involving damage from exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (“PFAS”), including the first individual, class action, mass tort, and multi-district litigation proceedings concerning the toxic chemical, recovering over $1 billion for impacted clients. In 2017, Rob received the Right Livelihood Award, known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize,” for his decades of work on behalf of those injured by PFAS chemical contamination. Rob is the author of the book, “Exposure: Poisoned Water, Corporate Greed, and One Lawyer's Twenty-Year Battle Against DuPont,” [https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Exposure/Robert-Bilott/9781501172823] and his story is the inspiration for the 2019 motion picture, “Dark Waters,” starring Mark Ruffalo. Rob's story and work is also featured in the documentary, “The Devil We Know.” Jessica Aldridge, Co-Host and Producer of EcoJustice Radio, is an environmental educator, community organizer, and 15-year waste industry leader. Ever feel like the products we use daily might be harming us more than helping? In part 2 of our conversation with Alex Clark, host of Culture Apothecary, we're diving deep into the hidden dangers lurking in our kitchens and medicine cabinets. Alex reveals the unsettling history of plastics in our daily items, the risks of non-stick cookware, and even the shocking origins of birth control, exploring how women's health decisions have long been influenced by profit-driven agendas. From the disturbing story behind Teflon and Dark Waters to the role of big corporations in today's food and health standards, Alex breaks down the harmful additives and chemicals in everyday products. Don't miss this eye-opening episode that will make you rethink everything in your pantry! Healers & Heal-Liners: Our Everyday Exposure: From plastics in our Starbucks cups to toxic non-stick cookware, we are continuously exposed to chemicals through common products that leach toxins into our food and drinks. Childhood Vaccines: Alex notes the U.S. childhood vaccine schedule has increased to 70 doses by age 18, with many shots combined, raising concerns about potential health impacts. Birth Control Trials: Birth control testing in the 1950s used Puerto Rican women without informed consent, leading to severe health complications and even fatalities. This shows the lack of transparency around women's health. -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website: https://www.healsquad.com/ Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop my Macy's Wishlist OUAI: https://theouai.com/ use promo code: HEALSQUAD for 15% off Wonderful Pistachios: http://www.wonderfulpistachios.com/ Alex's Resources: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/realalexclark/?hl=en Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/culture-apothecary-with-alex-clark/id1507839530 Resources she mentioned: Full Roundtable discussion https://rumble.com/v5fy7bv-american-health-and-nutrition-a-second-opinion.html Vani Hari's Kelloggs Petition The Business of Birth Control Documentary ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. The Horror Alphabet - our longest watchlist to date, featuring bests, worsts, and deep cuts from every letter of the alphabet! This will be a blind reaction recording - which means none of the hosts are aware of what the others are bringing to the table. The only notes we will have prepared are the ones for our own recommendations. The Horror Alphabet Rules For films that begin with "The," the film will begin with the first letter of the first word following "The." Example: The Awakening would begin with the letter A. For films with multiple words in the title, the film will begin with the first letter of the first full word. Example: I See The TV Glow would begin with the letter I. For films that begin with a number in the title, the film will begin with the first letter of the first word. Example: 28 Days Later will begin with the letter D. We will not be including any films with titles made up of just numbers, like 1922. Loan sharking is an illegal lending practice that preys on vulnerable individuals by offering quick cash loans at exorbitant interest rates, often without requiring collateral or credit checks. Borrowers, typically those unable to access traditional financial services, find themselves trapped in cycles of debt due to compounded interest and impossible repayment terms. Loan sharks use psychological manipulation, intimidation, and, in many cases, physical violence to enforce repayments, making it nearly impossible for borrowers to escape their financial obligations. This predatory practice has deep roots in history, often tied to organized crime, with operations expanding from local neighborhoods to international syndicates.Despite significant legal efforts, such as the RICO Act, to combat loan sharking, the practice persists and has evolved in modern times. Digital platforms and cryptocurrency have opened new avenues for loan sharks to reach unsuspecting borrowers, complicating law enforcement efforts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, economic hardships fueled a resurgence in loan sharking, with small businesses and individuals seeking desperate measures to stay afloat. Law enforcement agencies continue to adapt their strategies to tackle this age-old but ever-evolving form of financial exploitation.(commercial at 10:12)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

We're joined by attorney and author Russell W. Johnson to his Mountaineer Mystery series to discuss some of our favorite topics - dark fiction in dark times, dealing with rejection, and whether Jessica Lange was secretly the real killer all along. We also get a sneak peek at the second book in the series, The Mountain Mystic, and discuss character morality, conspiracy theories, and Ron Earl Phillips covers. Russell W. Johnson is an attorney who got so sick of billable hours he started writing crime fiction. His first story was published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and won the Edgar Awards' Robert L. Fish prize in 2015. Since then, he's had stories published in a number of outlets, has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, and won the West Virginia Writers' Pearl S. Buck Award for Writing for Social Change. His Debut Novel, The Moonshine Messiah, won the West Virginia Writers' First Place prize for Book Length Fiction. Did you know that there's more lurking in the briny deep than killer fish, octopi and alien crustaceans? Sometimes, there's also a seaside convent hiding demonic secrets and a lot of bad ADR, as exemplified by 1994's DARK WATERS. In a turn of events which surprised no one, Scott picked this Lovecraftian nunsploitation fever dream, replete with odd dialogue, chum-eating weirdos and an incredibly convoluted storyline. All that to say, it's perfect for the show! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this week's episode, host Daniel Raimi talks with Caroline Noblet, an associate professor at the University of Maine, about the risks and negative impacts of forever chemicals on the environment and human health. “Forever chemicals” refer to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are a group of synthetic chemicals with extremely durable chemical bonds that have become dangerously common in water systems, consumer goods, agricultural production, and manufacturing facilities. Because PFAS chemical bonds do not break down easily, forever chemicals stick around for long periods of time. Noblet discusses policy solutions to decrease existing water contamination due to forever chemicals and limit future exposure to these chemicals, while accounting for geographic and economic differences across communities; new rules mandating the testing of public water systems for certain PFAS chemicals; and the economic implications of efforts to clean up and reduce exposure to forever chemicals.
