Adapted from the Jeffrey Eugenides novel of the same name, Coppola's film tells the story of the five Lisbon sisters as seen through the eyes of the boys they charm and perplex in equal measure. Adopting the male gaze as a means of dismantling it, the film is a gauzy, stylish showcase that approaches the concerns of girlhood with sincerity while unearthing the tragedies of femininity under the patriarchal thumb of suburban American life.We discuss the film's aesthetic contradictions and how it weaponizes its own visual splendor against the viewer, its beauty a calculated veneer masking uncomfortable truths. Then, we examine the film's brilliant narrative device, using a single unidentified narrator to represent the collective attitudes of the young men incapapable of comprehending the fullness of the Lisbon sisters and their interiority. Finally, we ponder the connections Coppola draws between femininity and the natural world, how she literalizes this coupling within the film's suburban landscape and distinctive milieu. The Roxie theater in San Francisco is still seeking funds to help buy their building! n this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo boards the wild, rowdy, and frankly chaotic flight of "Fight or Flight" with star Josh Hartnett and director James Madigan. Picture this: you're stuck on a plane, half-drunk, and suddenly everyone around you turns out to be deadly assassins—basically, the worst flight imaginable. That's precisely the mess Lucas (Hartnett) finds himself navigating in this adrenaline-charged comedy-action flick. Known for his second-unit action chops on blockbusters like "Transformers" and "The Meg," Madigan boldly steps up to the plate, making an assured directorial debut with a scrappy, humorous energy that pairs perfectly with Hartnett's laid-back charisma. The film also features a stellar ensemble including Katee Sackhoff, Charithra Chandran, and Julian Kostov.Hartnett explained that Madigan's initial pitch immediately hooked him. "One of the first things James said was, 'I want the action sequences to feel like musical numbers,'" Hartnett laughed. "He wanted character growth to happen through action. That felt essential—and honestly, pretty exciting.”

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 9, 2025. A colorful palette and an earnest attempt at modernizing the classic Shakespearean tale just weren't enough to make Andy like "Juliet & Romeo.” But he did like watching season 2 of "Poker Face" on Peacock, with Natasha Lyonne returning in the clever murder-of-the-week series with an incredible lineup of guest stars in this new season. Also likable is "Nonnas", the new Vince Vaughn movie on Netflix. It's based on the true story of a guy on Long Island who opened a restaurant with grandmothers as chefs, cooking their favorite dishes for customers. And likeable for people other than Andy, "Fight or Flight" is an incredibly violent and bloody action comedy starring Josh Hartnett.   The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisode taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.  Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, or on the KSLNewsRadio App. Join the conversation on Facebook @FanEffectShow, or Instagram @FanEffectShow. In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick, Anthony, and Elise dive into the stylishly twisty world of Lucky Number Slevin, a 2006 crime thriller that blends mistaken identity, organized crime, and razor-sharp dialogue. With its neo-noir vibes and a star-studded cast including Josh Hartnett, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, and Bruce Willis, the hosts debate whether the film's complex narrative still holds up on a rewatch—or if it relies too heavily on its signature plot twist. Nick takes the lead in unpacking the film's layered storytelling, appreciating the clever screenplay and unique direction by Paul McGuigan. Anthony, ever the crime film connoisseur, praises the film's stylish approach and the way it balances tension with wit. Elise, on the other hand, questions whether the film's heavy reliance on plot reveals makes it less rewatchable once you know the outcome, raising a solid point about how much surprise contributes to enjoyment. The group discusses the performances across the board, especially Josh Hartnett's portrayal of the charming and enigmatic Slevin. There's spirited debate over whether Lucky Number Slevin leans more toward cool and clever or just a little too self-aware for its own good. Bruce Willis's presence is noted for bringing a stoic intensity to the film, while Freeman and Kingsley provide gravitas in their roles as rival crime bosses. Ultimately, the trio lands in mixed territory on rewatchability. While the film's style and sharp dialogue keep it engaging, the hosts agree that a first viewing delivers the biggest impact. However, for fans of twisty narratives and cool crime flicks, Lucky Number Slevin may still find its way back onto the screen every now and then. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425210/

In just 15 days' time, the final chapter in the story of the 2024 Formula 1 season will be written. A triple header of races - from the bright lights of Las Vegas to the heat of Qatar and Abu Dhabi – will decide the World Championships. It's late November, and time for Formula 1 to take up residency in Las Vegas. The sound of engines roaring down the city's world-famous Strip will soon bring in the crowds. Unlike other races on the calendar, which are organized by local promoters, the Las Vegas Grand Prix is run by F1 itself. So the pressure is on the event's CEO Renee Wilm to get everything just right. There will be extra focus on this year's Grand Prix, as Las Vegas is the first race where the 2024 Drivers' Championship can be decided. The season has seesawed between Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren challenger Lando Norris. But it's Verstappen who can defend his World title, simply by finishing ahead of his British rival in the Grand Prix. Back at base, McLaren are studying the data as they prepare for another crucial event in the U.S.Aston Martin race engineers Chris Cronin and Andrew Vizard are also doing their homework ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix. It's not just the racing that the teams are preparing for back at base. At every Grand Prix across the season, the team's wine and dine guests and there are some big celebrity names on the Las Vegas guest list. But when night falls for the Las Vegas Grand Prix, and the starting lights go out, all eyes will be on Norris and Verstappen. The penultimate race of the season for the F1 teams lies 8,000 miles east of Vegas in Qatar. The 2023 race around the Lusail Circuit, which was held earlier in the year, was brutal. Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll and his Performance Coach Henry Howe reveal how they are preparing for the rigours of the desert race. The 2024 Formula 1 season is also the longest in the sport's history, with 24 races on the calendar. McLaren driver Oscar Piastri is taking it all in his stride but the Australian does have a unique take on the brain power that is needed in F1.McLaren are aiming to flex their muscles this weekend because Qatar offers the first chance to clinch the Constructors' crown. To do that they need to out-score rivals Ferrari by 45 points. The heat is on, in more ways than one, in Qatar.F1:Back at Base is narrated by Josh Hartnett. It is created and produced by Sarah Holt and Holly Samos and is an IMG Production for the BBC.
