From the start, co-writer and director Malcom Washington came in with a very specific take on the material, and was incredibly grateful when Oscar-nominated MUDBOUND co-writer Virgil Williams came on board to help nurture (and focus) that take on the page. The Fire Inside is the true story of Claressa "T-Rex" Shields, a boxer from Flint, Michigan and her trainer, Jason Crutchfield. She became the first American woman to win Olympic gold in boxing. The Fire Inside is the feature directorial debut for Rachel Morrison, the first woman cinematographer nominated for an Academy Award. Cinematographer Rina Yang, BSC enjoyed the ability to speak with director Rachel Morrison in a shorthand way about shooting the film. “It did help that I've known Rachel for a while, just being female DPs in this boys' game,” she says. “It was nice to be able to skip the tech chat and get to the point, because we had a really insane schedule.” The film's production had faced numerous challenges, having to shut down during COVID in 2020 which halted filming for two years. Once The Fire Inside was greenlit again, they faced an accelerated production schedule in Toronto. Rina prepped by watching a documentary about Claressa Shields called T-Rex and watched all her fights in the 2012 Olympics as references. She and Rachel meticulously shotlisted every scene and entered it into a detailed spreadsheet so that they knew what they needed each day. The Fire Inside focuses on capturing the intensity of Shields' journey, both inside and outside the ring. “Rachel and I talked about how we wanted to shoot the boxing,” Rina explains, “but we decided that ultimately, we just wanted to feel the fight from Claressa's point of view rather than doing cool boxing shots.” This approach led to a raw and intimate portrayal of the sport, emphasizing the emotional and physical toll on Shields. Actor Ryan Destiny underwent rigorous training to perform all the boxing scenes herself, and Rina often opted for handheld cameras to capture the raw energy of the story. Rina and Rachel both operated a few of the boxing scenes. Rina didn't hesitate to tell Rachel how her camerawork was looking. “I was really honest. She would ask if she did a good job. I'd say that was good, or suggest a move that's less active and a little bit more quiet with the camera.” Rina's path to becoming a cinematographer was not a direct one. After moving to London from Japan at 21 with limited English, she decided to pursue film school. While working on a film set, Rina was inspired by Sara Deane, a female cinematographer, and realized that cinematography was her true calling. She subsequently honed her skills through a series of short films, music videos, and commercials. You can see The Fire Inside currently in theaters and streaming on VOD January 28. How's this for fun? Take 27 incredible writers–including winners of the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, PEN Awards, Women's Prize for Fiction, Edgar Award, and more–and invite each of them to write an erotic short story. Then publish the collection in one steamy anthology with the authors listed alphabetically at the beginning of the book but none of the stories attributed, so nobody knows who wrote what. We're talking about authors Robert Olen Butler, Louise Erdrich, Julia Glass, Rebecca Makkai, Helen Oyeyemi. Mary-Louise Parker, Jason Reynolds, Paul Theroux, Luis Alberto Urrea, Edmund White, and more. The idea was the brainchild of authors Hillary Jordan and Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan, and the book is called Anonymous Sex. In this episode, Hillary and Cheryl join Julie and Eve to discuss the responses they got when they reached out to authors, how the freedom of anonymity allowed authors to write outside their own identities, and what surprised them most about the collection (“there is a lot of cunnilingus in this book”). Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan is author of the international bestsellers Sarong Party Girls and A Tiger in the Kitchen: A Memoir of Food and Family. She's also the editor of the fiction anthology, Singapore Noir. Cheryl was a staff writer at The Wall Street Journal, In Style, and The Baltimore Sun, and her stories and reviews have also appeared in The New York Times, Times Literary Supplement, The Paris Review, The Washington Post, and Bon Appétit, among others. Hillary Jordan is the author of the novels Mudbound and When She Woke. Mudbound was an international bestseller that won multiple awards and was adapted into a critically acclaimed Netflix film that earned four academy award nominations. Hillary is also a screenwriter, essayist, and poet whose work has been published in The New York Times, McSweeney's, and Outside Magazine, among others. Kim Chakanetsa meets two pioneering cinematographers who bring stories about women to the big screen. Rachel Morrison is the first female cinematographer to be nominated for an Oscar for her work on Mudbound, and she's the only woman who's ever shot a superhero blockbuster movie (Black Panther). Rachel now focuses on strong female characters: she worked on Seberg, a biopic on the iconic actor Jean Seberg, and is currently shooting a movie about Claressa ‘T-Rex' Shields, the first woman to win an Olympic gold for boxing. Lilia Sellami is a French and Tunisian director of photography and camera operator. She worked on international Hollywood productions, like Star Wars and Men in Black. She is now based in Northern Africa where she collaborates with female directors to tell the stories of women fighting for their rights. A feature she's recently worked on, Dying to Divorce, was the UK's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2022 Academy Awards. Deepest apologies to you, and may God have mercy on his soul. We begin with a discussion of indie darling Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti and JK Simmons, available now on Hulu, and how enjoyable, moving, funny and rewatchable this film is. We then discuss a potential Razzie nominee (I'd bet against a nomination, but we'll see), The Last Thing He Wanted, starring Anne Hathaway, Rosie Perez, Ben Affleck, Willem Dafoe and Toby Jones. It was directed and co-written by Dee Rees, her first movie since Mudbound in 2017, bought in 2018 by Netflix, adapted from a successful Joan Didion, yet somehow got terrible reviews. On the December 28, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson, weekend editor Brad Oman and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about what they did over the Holidays and share their favorite Christmas gifts.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).   Feedback: Hayden writes in that “Yes Die Hard is a Christmas movie. If you break the plot down, it's the typical Christmas story. A distant father who has to go on an adventure to rekindle his relationship with his family. Think about all the Christmas movies that have this exact plot device. Also it's important that it's on Christmas Eve because police activity would be down. If It's A Wonderful Life counts, which it should, then Die Hard should. A very massive chunk of the film doesn't even take place on Christmas.“    Leanne R. from LA writes in that “Rankin-Bass Christmas specials would have been a good addition to your lists, especially when you consider A Charlie Brown Christmas and Mickey's Christmas Carol were mentioned in the episode (both technically films, but are popularized as tv specials). And I wasn't sure if I missed this or not, but The Santa Clause is a quintessential Christmas movie for me.  I also wanted to give a shout out to Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle & You've Got Mail as well, which are not technically Christmas films but strike the proper feel-good Christmas tone to pass. You've Got Mail, especially, feels more Christmas-y (based on The Shop Around the Corner, it feels more deserved of a Christmas film title) and for a rom-com fan like me is also a yearly Christmas film staple.  Otherwise, very much enjoyed your lists! Thanks for the update and keep up the good work.”   Have any geeky thoughts on this news that we might not have addressed on the podcast? Peter binge-watched two whole seasons of Survivor, watched the Star Wars episode of The Toys That Made Us on Netflix, and played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 board game. HT watched Ultimate Beastmaster, A Christmas Prince, A Christmas Inheritance, gave in and listened to the Hamilton soundtrack even though she was trying to save it until she saw the show. Chris saw THE LAST JEDI again on Christmas Day (it's still good). I've also been reading and making an effort to not look at my phone, which is just bliss. Ben watched The Last Jedi (again), It's a Wonderful Life, Logan Lucky, Mudbound, A Ghost Story, and The Good Place Brad saw The Disaster Artist and Molly's Game, is continuing to catch up on awards season movies like The Post, The Florida Project, and I, Tonya, and is finally spending time playing Star Wars Battlefront 2.   Favorite gifts we got for Christmas: Peter got a Hot Toys life-size Baby Groot replica and Google Wifi router HT got KOREAN SKIN CARE, also the Costco MoviePass/Fandor year-long subscription Chris iphone X Ben got a bunch of board games Jacob got lots of new PC stuff Brad got the Ectomobile Owner's Manual Book and his life back.   You can find more about all the stories we mentioned on today's show at slashfilm.com. /Film Daily is published every weekday, bringing you the most exciting news from the world of movies and television as well as deeper dives into the great features from slashfilm.com. We begin with callbacks to our Freshman year Econ classes as we bark at one another about how wealth is achieved and why we have none, and as usual, we quote South Park episodes to prove our points. The show evolves into three primary reviews of the Netflix Oscar Contenders, Angelina Jolie's First They Killed My Father, Noah Baumbach's Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller dramedy The Meyerowitz Stories, and the critically beloved Mudbound, directed by Dee Rees and starring Mary J. Blige, Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hedlund, and Jason Mitchell. Also Mike rides his foreign film watching white horse and tramples Mike #1's pathetic attention span for subtitles during our review of First They Killed My Father. The production profile showcases something we once called Brangelina and their wunderkind of a son's new career as a producer. We also discuss the Oscar buzz surrounding its Best Foreign Film hopes. We vehemently disagree and trash each other over this review, and you don't want to miss it. It is a War for the Podcast of the Mikes!! YES!!! I worked that in. Is it catching on???!!! During our production profile of The Meyerowitz Stories, we cover it's colossal win of the Palm Dog (yes, I spelled that right) at the Cannes Film Festival. Look out, Oscar!! Also Mike makes a terrible joke about Mr. Magorium and his wonder emporium as we enter into our thoughts on where this movie should contend at the Oscars. Our review quibbles over whether this is a drama or comedy or dramedy, and we'll give you a hint. A Mike wins. We gush over the screenplay chops and reference our own family lives to embarrassing levels as we tease some of the plot. We focus on the great cast of Mudbound during our production profile of our third review, give you all the specs on where it's contending for Oscars, and discuss why Also Mike is a bad person. Then we somehow have a thoughtful discussion of the film and argue why it should be one of the more polarizing on the year. In a new segment we call our Lightning Round Reviews, we give a few words on over 25+ other Netflix Original movies from 2017. So we have your upcoming Netflix & Chill session thoroughly previewed and reviewed, and we bring it all home for you with a ranking of our Top 5 Netflix Original Movies of the Year thus far.
