From Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, Point Break) comes her first feature film in in more than eight years and it might very well be THE scariest film of the year. :o The premise is simple: a lone nuclear missile has been launched from somewhere in the Pacific and is on a trajectory to land somewhere in the continental United States....in twenty minutes.  This nuclear thriller takes us through the various corridors of power of the governernment and those in the most responsive positions in the military - we watch as they scramble not only how to figure out how to prevent this weapon from hitting its target, but also how our military should respond if it DOES hit its target, possibly resulting in the instant deaths of millions of civilians.  It's a terrifying sceanario and Bigelow has assembled a top-flight cast lead by Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Tracey Letts, Gabriel Basso, Anthony Ramos, Greta Lee, and Jared Harris.  The clock is ticking.....Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture For this week's third podcast review, Josh Parham and Giovanni Lago join me to review and discuss the latest film from Kathryn Bigelow, "A House Of Dynamite," starring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke. The plot follows the U.S. government navigating an official response to a single nuclear missile launched by an unidentified enemy. It's presented in a terrifyingly realistic manner that wants to encourage more thoughtful discussion surrounding nuclear weapons, but its three-act "Rashomon" inspired narrative structure and divisive ending have audiences perhaps thinking about other elements than what was intended since its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. What did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss the screenplay, direction, the performances from the ensemble, the ending, its score, awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Kathryn Bigelow - the first woman who won the Best Director OSCAR at the Academy Awards - is back to deliver us her latest tense thriller... but on Netflix. Bigelow's films have had a big impact on me as a film fan since I was an early teen and I've been waiting years for her to finally make a new movie. I - thank god - had the opportunity to see A House of Dynamite in cinemas last week, with it currently running a select cinemas release in the lead-up to it's drop on Netflix on October 24th. This movie's been garnering pretty rave reviews since the it's premiere at the Venice Film Festival... but I'm coming in pretty hot with a slightly controversial opinion on one of Netflix's biggest awards contenders for 2025. To play Alex Murdaugh, Jason Clarke wasn't going to turn the man into a caricature, telling producers, “I'm not going to play a bad guy here,” Clarke told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. Instead, Clarke focused on the “tragedy of Roman proportions” in Hulu's ‘Murdaugh: Death in the Family,' based on the true story of a South Carolina man convicted in 2023 of murdering his wife and son. “We're not here to sensationalize it or even to replay it. We're there to open it up.” Clarke has two other big projects this year. The first is the Apple TV+ series ‘The Last Frontier,' where he plays a U.S. Marshal in Alaska hunting fugitives who escaped a plane crash. “It's a gut thing. Do I feel like doing eight months in the snow and the winter and the action? You know what? Yes.” Then there's ‘A House of Dynamite,' about which he says director Kathryn Bigelow has “stripped back a lot of the usual tools of cinema.” This diversity in roles is exactly why Clarke does what he does. “The times I'm grumpy, I'm frustrated, I'm hurting, I realized just how lucky I am and also what I'm capable of, and that if you find the right things, you can really disappear into them.” Subscribe to my newsletter: https://link.newsweek.com/join/for-the-culture Follow me: https://linktr.ee/halanscott Subscribe to Newsweek's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/newsweek See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland — (3:21) talk about the big reveal this past week of A-List Hollywood actor Jason Clarke in full costume as Alex Murdaugh. Clarke, who stars in the upcoming Hulu production based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast — now True Sunlight Podcast — was seen filming in Atlanta and … let's just say he has more than just the LUNSHARK team excited for the series.  It turns out the fake Alex Murdaugh wasn't the only one getting headlines this past week. The lawyers for the real (13:35) Alex did what the lawyers for the real Alex do best and that's getting mainstream media to help them wrongly paint the state Attorney General's Office as sneaky and underhanded. As usual, it's much ado about nothing.  Also on the show, (34:08) will Buster Murdaugh's latest strategy in his federal defamation case against Warner Brothers actually work? Mandy and Liz pick Eric's brain on whether Alex's remaining son has a chance.  Plus the latest in the (49:01) Sara Lynn Colucci case and why prosecutors need to rethink their interactions with victims and their families. Episode 24:39 How Jason Clarke Dropped His Triglyceride Levels From 2174 To 125 In Five Weeks! Imagine going to the doctor and finding out that your Cholesterol levels were high. As were your Triglycerides. Really high. In fact, imagine being told that your Triglyceride levels were over 2000… when they should be UNDER 150. Would you feel panicked? Of course you would. As was Jason Clarke. So panicked that he agreed to do something he didn't want to… Take a statin drug. His doctor convinced him that he HAD TO take it… so he did. For one night. One painful night. You see, the statin drugs caused Jason to experience muscle cramps in his legs. Bad cramps. So bad that he decided to quit taking them and instead “do whatever it takes” to lower his Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels naturally. That's when he reached out to me. I designed a program for him that I felt would work. And it did. But the reason it worked was because Jason was committed to following it. So committed that he experienced dramatic decreases in his Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels.  On this week's episode Jason and I talk about his experience… what he did and how he did it. It's a great episode that anyone with a natural approach to health and healing will enjoy. Give it a good listen and then share it with a friend. Thanks! ———————-  Want to learn more? John Connor is a fictional character and the male protagonist of the Terminator franchise. Created by writer/director James Cameron, the character is first referred to in the 1984 film The Terminator and first appears in its 1991 sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day (T2). In the character's first appearance, John is portrayed by Edward Furlong as a child, and briefly by Michael Edwards as an adult in a small role. Other actors have portrayed the character in subsequent films, including Nick Stahl, Christian Bale, and Jason Clarke. In addition, Thomas Dekker portrayed John Connor in the two-season television series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The character serves as a protagonist in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Terminator Salvation (2009), the antagonist of the film Terminator Genisys (2015), and has a brief cameo in Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) John Constantine (/ˈkɒnstənˌtaɪn/)[1] is a fictional antihero who appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 (June 1985), and was created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben. The titular Hellblazer,[2][3] Constantine is a working-class warlock, occult detective, and con man from Liverpool who is stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, deadpan wit, ruthless cunning, and constant chain smoking, but he is also a passionate humanitarian driven by a heartfelt desire to do some good in his life. Originally a supporting character who played a pivotal role in the "American Gothic" Swamp Thing storyline, Constantine received his own comic in 1988. The musician Sting was a visual inspiration for the character.[4] The Hellblazer series was the longest-running and most successful title of DC's Vertigo imprint.[5] Empire ranked Constantine third in their 50 Greatest Comic Characters of All Time,[6] while IGN ranked him number 29 in its Top 100 Comic Book Heroes, and the character ranked number 10 in Wizard's Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time. The character made his live-action debut in the film Constantine (2005), played by Keanu Reeves. On television, Constantine was played in the television series Constantine by Matt Ryan, who later reprised the character in the Arrowverse series Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash, and several animated productions. Jenna Coleman later portrayed a female version of the character (and her ancestor) in the television series The Sandman, adapting both Constantines' roles from the comic series. Some writers who have written his stories have claimed to "see" him.[4][7][8]

Send us a Text Message.Season 12, Episode 2 continues TGTPTU's paired exploration of the films of Sir Christopher Nolan with his most recent film OPPENHEIMER (2023). Running the risk of being considered by critics a “bomb,” Sir Nolan boldly moves away from genre pictures for his first biopic of a man who'll/'d (pardon the time-wimey-ness) get mention in Sir Nolan's preceding film (and anteceding in our season of NOLAN VOID coverage), namely, TENT: Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy) who led the development of the atomic bomb in Los Alamos but also may have stolen a fellow professor's alcoholic wife (Emily Blunt) and had an affair with a murdered Communist (Florence Pugh) all the while really getting caught in the craw (as they say in New Mexico) of Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr.). This cast is supported by a murderers' row of actors, including Matt Damon, Benny Safdie, Jason Clarke, Kenneth Branagh, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Gary Oldman, and over a dozen other familiar faces. Having left Warner Brothers, his home since INSOMNIA, after its handling of the release of Tenet, Sir Nolan's first and only subsequent feature was released in the Summer of 2023 during the cultural portmanteau phenomena of BARBENHEIMER. Continuing a tradition that has not yet started in the podcast's coverage (due to the nature of its temporal pincer movement), the film was shot largely (in dual senses of the term) on Imax, which because of the noise associated with these massive cameras meant Nolan would pull again from his experiences of his first film FOLLOWING to record dialogue separately at the time of the shoot. For flashback scenes of Strauss, special black and white Imax film stock had to be created.Listen as in real time host Ken finds effective storytelling tips, co-host Thomas discovers his new drag name, and provisional host Ryan learns how to engage the mute button. The Caine Mutiny (1954) is based on Herman Wouk's bestselling Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. The film, directed by Edward Dmytryk and produced by Stanley Kramer, portrays the fictitious events on board the U.S.S. Caine, a Navy destroyer-minesweeper in the Pacific during World War II. Executive officer, Lt. Stephen Maryk (Van Johnson), relieves the seemingly unstable Lt. Commander Philip Francis Queeg, Captain of the USS Caine, of his command after Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) endangers the ship and its crew during a cyclone. The ship returns to the U.S. and Maryk is court-martialed for mutiny. He is represented by Navy lawyer, Lt. Barney Greenwald (José Ferrer), who despite disapproving of Maryk's actions, believes Maryk was misled by the ship's communications officer, Lt. Tom Keefer (Fred MacMurray), into believing Queeg was mentally unfit for command. Maryk is acquitted after Greenwald effectively places Queeg on trial by his exposing Queeg's erratic and paranoid behavior. The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (2023), directed by the late William Friedkin, is based on Wouk's adaption of his own 1951 novel for the stage. In contrast to the 1954 film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial covers only the court-martial. The cast includes Jake Lacy as Maryk, Jason Clarke as defense attorney Greenwald, Monica Raymund as prosecutor Lt. Commander Katherine Challee, the late Lance Reddick as the presiding judge Captain Luther Blakley, and Kiefer Sutherland in a phenomenal performance as Queeg. The films are not only gripping courtroom dramas, but also explore larger themes around military justice, ethics, and morality.  With me to discuss these films is Eugene (Gene) Fidell, a visiting Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and co-founder of the National Institute of Military Justice.Timestamps:0:00     Introduction3:58     What's a court-martial?9:14     The crime of mutiny17:48   Relieving Queeg of his command27:36   Putting Queeg on trial29:33   Taking some poetic license with a court-martial34:44   The defense lawyer's post-trial critique of the mutiny41:21   The dramatic changes in the Navy and armed forces since the original movie 47:12   More context for the two Caine Mutiny movies50:21   Other great movies about military justice    Further reading:“The Humphrey Bogart Blogathon: ‘The Caine Mutiny' (1954),” Dec. 23, 2016, https://back-to-golden-days.blogspot.com/2016/12/the-humphrey-bogart-blogathon-caine.htmlKelly, Kevin M., “You Murdered Queeg: Lawyers, Ethics, Military Justice, and ‘The Caine Mutiny,'” 1991 Wis. On episode 38 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the final film in their William Friedkin series, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (2023). After a 12-year absence from making a feature film, William Friedkin returned with a faithful, reverent adaption of one of the most celebrated plays of all time, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Being a movie he'd wanted to make his entire career, the film came together over the course of two months in early 2023; a modern, relevant version of Herman Wouk's classic text, only to sadly pass away before the film premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. For a final film, it is a perfect end to a celebrated career by one of Hollywood's most unique directorial talents. With an extraordinary cast lead by incredible performances from Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Clarke, Ryan and Jay break down Friedkin's last film, the modern setting of his adaption, Lance Reddick's career, the film's explosive ending, favorite court room dramas, and they give their definitive rankings of William Friedkin's filmography. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h48m. The guys will be back next week to begin their new series covering the films of Sofia Coppola with a review of her debut film, The Virgin Suicides. You can stream the film on Pluto TV. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it.
