Richard Linklater is a hit man, but not in the assassin sense of the word. No, the hits he trades in are of the movie variety – stylish cult classics that vary in genre and form, but always manage to ignite something powerful in viewers. It's been that way for three and a half decades now: among his hits, dating back to 1990, are Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, Boyhood, School of Rock, A Scanner Darkly, Slacker, Waking Life, Everybody Wants Some, Fast Food Nation… the list goes on. No wonder the Texan is one of the most respected names in modern American cinema – a force both prolific and patient, as his multiple movies shot across numerous decades prove. 2014 coming-of-age drama Boyhood was filmed across twelve years, with Merrily We Roll Along – a Paul Mescal-starring Sondheim adaptation, to be shot across twenty years – among his current projects.Earlier this year, he released Hit Man – a romantic comedy of sorts, with a hint of thriller thrown in for good measure, about a bashful college professor with a unique side hustle. Gary, played by the film's co-writer Glen Powell, has a recurring gig with the New Orleans police force, pretending to be an contract killer. He wears a wire to meet with people seeking to order a hit on their spouses, their work colleagues, their parents and so on. It's a gig that's going smoothly for Gary, until he meets Madison, played by Adria Arjona – a woman trying to escape an abusive husband, who Gary begins to fall for. What follows is Linklater in full-blown crowd-pleasing mode.In the conversation you're about to hear, we discuss what it was about this true-ish story, adapted from a newspaper article by journalist Skip Hollandsworth, that spoke to Richard. We talk about the baseball injury that put him on a path to filmmaking (and how it might have led to the unstoppable pace with which he makes movies). And we break down every detail of Hit Man, one of the movies of 2024, in spoiler-filled detail.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. The brilliant filmmaker Richard Linklater (Boyhood) and the uber talented Glen Powell (Any One But You) joins us to chat about their brilliant comedy movie Hit Man! Richard Linklater and Glen Powell discuss how the movie came about. Why they wrote it together on spec and how they made it with Giles Alderson & Dom Lenoir. From his debut feature "It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books" – a film he made with almost no budget, Richard Linklater kick started his career. Shot on Super 8, and literally drove around the country screening himself – He made the cult classic "Dazed and Confused," the romantic trilogy "Before Sunrise," "Before Sunset," and "Before Midnight," the animated rotoscope experiments of "Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly," and the groundbreaking, 12-years-in-the-making "Boyhood," Linklater has consistently defied expectations and carved his own path with a signature style that's both intimate and epic. From his breakout role in "Scream Queens" to his scene-stealing performance as Chad Radwell in "Everybody Wants Some!!" – Richard Linklater's ode to college life in the 80s – Glen Powell has been steadily building an impressive resume. He's charmed audiences in rom-coms like "Set It Up," and "Anyone But You" showcased his dramatic chops in the true-life war epic "Devotion," and, of course, soared to new heights as the cocky but ultimately heroic Hangman in "Top Gun: Maverick and very recently blew us away in the brilliant 'Twisters'. John Wick: Golpe a golpe, verso a verso. What does a scanner see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does it see into me? Into us? Clearly or darkly? I hope it sees clearly because I can't any longer see into myself. I see only murk. I hope for everyone's sake the scanners do better, because if the scanner sees only darkly the way I do, then I'm cursed and cursed again. - Fred Get weekly bonus content on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/kingmepod Email us at kingmepod@gmail.com

Let the battle commence! Nothing enhances an action movie quite like two classic characters battling it out! Jay and Shua examine the elegant grace of 'vs' movies! VS movies! It's like standing in the hallway watching two other kids fighting it out and you're not the one getting in trouble. Hollywood discovered years ago that audiences wondered what it would be like if some of their favorite characters duked it out. Let's find out! News The cookie makers, Crumbl is making a cereal. It was such a great idea for a new universe. While we wish we could have gotten more episodes, we are grateful for the ones we have. Shua watched the new Ron Howard documentary about an entertainment icon. Jim Henson: Idea Man laid out the interesting and sometimes disjointed life of the main behind the Muppets. It's a very enlightening watch. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay breaks down the groundbreaking and almost experimental 2006 film A Scanner Darkly. It's an animated film starring Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr. and several other well-known Hollywood elite. Based on a 1977 novel by Philip K. Dick, it takes place in a dystopian future but has some important messages for us today. Check out the breakdown now. Make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. There are some new locations from Deadpool 1 and 2 in preparation for the new movie. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Movies! In the 1940s, Hollywood had found a strong audience for monster movies. Dracula, Frankenstein, and many more. We also craved our sci-fi attacks. But what if we started pitting some of those creatures against each other? It's like the classic boxing matches that everyone got excited for. When Godzilla arrived on screen, it didn't take long to see how the battles could be even bigger! (pun intended) Those ‘vs' movies started with him battling another behemoth star named King Kong. The pandora's box of ‘vs' ideas had been open and now creators were matching all kinds of characters so that now we have a whole slew of exciting flicks. Jay and Shua generate a random list of characters and try to decide who would win if they made a movie with them. What vs movies do you like? Which characters would you like to see go toe-to-toe? First person that emails me with the subject line, “In this corner…” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! This week sees us back for PART 2 of our deep-dive into the symbolic and occult meaning underpinning Philip K. Dick's autobiographical, mostly-still-fiction, futuristic dystopia: A Scanner Darkly. We resume our analysis by first unpacking the symbolic meaning of the insects which haunt the characters from start to finish and what they have to do with the beetle headed god of ancient Egypt. Afterwards we explore the connection Donna has with the divine feminine in both Gnostic and Egyptian mythology, the inside scoop on Substance D, the field of reeds and the inclusion of the Thelemic N.O.X. formulae which also appears in the famous Black Lodge of Twin Peaks. In the extended version of the show we discuss the meaning of the Hawthorne plant, the layers of esoteric symbolism in the film version of Bob's living room using the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, who Barris really is and what it all has to do with popcorn.

Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! On this week's show we dive back into the world of science-fiction-author extraordinaire, Philip K. Dick by looking at his break-out, dystopian, future-prophesying 1977 classic “A Scanner Darkly,” alongside its faithful 2006 film adaptation. If you're not familiar, the movie is free on Youtube. In the free section of the show we explore the Biblical quote the title of the work is referring to and why this film and numerous other works by Philip K. Dick could be considered gnostic in character. We dig into and find a number of gems by looking at the name etymology of a Scanner Darkly's characters, starting of course with Bob which reveals numerous connections to gnostic and ancient Egyptian wisdom. In the extended edition of the show we go even deeper into what is really going on in the iconic medical examination scene. By looking at Egyptian hieroglyphs we get some heavy insight into the meaning behind the symbols used in the scene and triangulate an ancient myth which reflects ALL the major themes in A Scanner Darkly. If that were not enough we even find how the gematria value of the examination room reflects these ideas in a coherent way that further clarifies the deeper narrative behind Philip K. Dick's strangely charming and tortured tale before concluding with a discussion about which order of angel is responsible for reading Freck's endless list of sins - thank you and enjoy the show! Welcome to Movie Homework, presented by Binge Media!Your hosts, Jack and Chad, are here to take you on a journey through the world of film, one movie at a time. Each episode, they will review a movie in depth, diving into the themes, performances, and technical aspects that make it a cinematic masterpiece (or not!) Along the way, they'll award the film superlatives for Most Entertaining Scene, Favorite Quote, Best Use of Music and many more.So grab your popcorn, sit back, and join Jack and Chad as they take you on a journey through the movies. There are a handful of horror/thrillers that encompass a meta-narrative, but few have gone as deep into that subject as 2007's Funny Games, director Michael Haneke's remake of the same film from 1997. The film really never rose to prominence or critical acclaim on release but to people who appreciate the flick it offers a totally unique take on a slasher film. Is this a pretentious piece of art-house garbage? Why has Michael Pitt's career not taken off? And is Tim Roth a "bitch"? This week we hop into Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly, to discuss the dark sides of drug use, surveillance, and an all too real dystopian world based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick. What does a scanner see? Into the head? Down into the heart? Does it see into me? Into us? Clearly or darkly? I hope it sees clearly because I can't any longer see into myself.Support the Show.Film Club 3000Film Now. Film Then. Film Always.filmclub3000.com@filmclub3000
Macon and Ebba talk about Lynne Ramsay's underseen gem, "Morvern Callar", for the second time, but this time in front a freshly overwhelmed crowd. You can hear what else the Projector Pod team had to say about the film the first time around here. The next Projector Pod Live will take place at Husets Biograf on May 20th when we will be showing Richard Linklater's rotoscoped adaptation of Philip K. Dick's paranoid sci-fi classic, "A Scanner Darkly". If you think Projector Pod is the kind of thing you'd like to support you can find out Patreon here too.

VYS0036 | Infinite Game - Vayse to Face with Joseph Matheny - Show Notes Some rare art transcends reality, some even rarer art seems to create a new reality altogether - the work of Joseph Matheny does both of these things while embracing the trickster spirit inherent in the magickal traditions in which his work has its roots. Joseph talks to Hine and Buckley about Ong's Hat, his "living book" project, widely recognised as the first Alternate Reality Game, and how it took on a life of it's own, not only for the people who were playing it but also for the people who created it. The conversation also turns to synchronicity and how his recent work, the Liminal Cycle, seems to generate synchronicity in the lives of those who engage with it, how his work connects so closely to magick, nature and theatre, his experiences in the North Pole and how they affected his writing, the use of magic in political systems and how the internet we know and love (to hate) today retains the legacy of the ritual magicians and DnD enthusiasts who created it... (recorded 7 February 2024) Thanks to Joseph for his time and thanks, as always, to Keith for the excellent show notes, you can hit him up on on bluesky: @peakflow.bsky.social Joseph Matheny online Website (https://josephmatheny.com/) Official Archive of the Ong's Hat Project (https://incunabula.org/) Ong's Hat website (https://ongs-hat.com/) YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/JosephMatheny1) Twitter/X (https://twitter.com/OngsHat1) Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/ongshat1/) Substack (https://josephmatheny.substack.com/) Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ongshat23/) Goodreads page (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/460921.Joseph_Matheny) IMDb page (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0558429/) Hine and Buckley's Intro Neuralink - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuralink) Elon Musk says Neuralink has implanted its first brain chip in human - The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/jan/29/elon-musk-neuralink-first-human-brain-chip-implant) True Detective (Season 1) - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Detective_(season_1)) Ong's Hat - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ong%27s_Hat) Ong's Hat: The Beginning (Authorized Version) by Joseph Matheny (Audiobook) - Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/ongs-hat-1/sets/ongs-hat-the-beginning) Ong's Hat: The Beginning (Authorized Version) by Joseph Matheny - Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48741082-ong-s-hat) Alternate reality game (ARG) - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_reality_game) QAnon - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QAnon) January 6 United States Capitol attack - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_6_United_States_Capitol_attack) Pizzagate conspiracy theory - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizzagate_conspiracy_theory) Gamification in Politics: how does it influence Political Participation? by Elena Giordano - Medium (https://elena-giordano.medium.com/gamification-in-politics-how-does-it-influence-political-participation-c4936170cf1b) Liminal (The Liminal Cycle) by Cameron Whiteside (Joseph Matheny) - Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48903852-liminal-by-cameron) Xen: The Zen of the Other (The Liminal Cycle) by Ezra Buckley (Joseph Matheny) - Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60559685-xen) Statio Numero (The Liminal Cycle) by Joseph Matheny, Jason Nunes (Illustrator) - Goodreads (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/170179781-statio-numero) Joseph's early background in tech Early Personal Computers, 1970s-1980s - Museums Victoria (https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/articles/15729) Technology that changed us: The 1980s, from MS-DOS to the first GPS satellite - ZDNET (https://www.zdnet.com/article/technology-that-changed-us-the-1980s/) Berkeley Macintosh User Group - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Macintosh_Users_Group) Steve Wozniak - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Wozniak) ARPANET - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARPANET) Dial-up Internet access - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial-up_Internet_access) Bulletin board system - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletin_board_system) Email - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email) The History of Email: Digging Into the Past, Present, and Future - Email On Acid (https://www.emailonacid.com/blog/article/email-marketing/history-of-email/) Pony Express - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pony_Express) Joseph's epiphany High Frontiers magazine - Anarchivism (https://anarchivism.org/w/High_Frontiers) High Frontiers Issue #1 - Archive.org (https://archive.org/details/highfrontiers00rusi) Modem - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem) The WELL - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_WELL) Dialer - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialer) Apple Inc. - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc.) "Before Midnight" is the third and final installment of the "Before" Trilogy directed by Richard Linklater. We all know his work of "Dazed and Confused", "A Scanner Darkly", "School of Rock" and "Boyhood". His film tackles existentialism between relationships and their own with the characters of Jesse and Céline as they are older and they are parents. I dig the film for it's realism, how deep it goes with the charaters that are tackling the issues that comes with relationships, familes and blended families. This is a film that is important to watch, showing the slice of life that we are not alone with our issues and insecurities. I really appreciate it too because we are able to relate to the film, it crosses all kinds of boundaries.Four out of four tokes.
