CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of deafness, blindness, ableism. If you've ever done theater, and we definitely have, you dread the thought of having to deal with anything related to this movie and this story. And you'd be right to, because all too often we tell a sanitized, ableist, overacted retelling of a very real story: the breakthrough Annie Sullivan had teaching her student Helen Keller to communicate. So you'll have to pardon our shock while watching the original film adaptation of the Broadway success, and finding it's in fact a brilliant film. Director Arthur Penn is brilliant in adapting his own stage production by showing and not telling, a move that seems impossible for most stage to screen adaptations. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, reprising their roles from Broadway, are absolutely phenomenal. And sure, the supporting cast might as well be cardboard cutouts, but it doesn't matter when you've got a film as compellingly made as this one. Welcome to Hit Rewind! In this episode, Michael and Kersey take a trip back to 1968 to explore how cinema began pushing boundaries. The year saw the emergence of the R and X ratings, reflecting a shift towards more mature themes. First on the list is Valley of the Dolls, a melodrama about three women navigating the dark side of Hollywood. Despite its reputation for being trashy, it's a fascinating look at the industry's underbelly, with standout performances, especially from Patty Duke. The conversation then shifts to Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, a wild, bizarre follow-up that blends comedy, musical acts, and surrealism. Directed by Russ Meyer and co-written by Roger Ebert, this film is a cult classic that defies conventional storytelling. Next up is Midnight Cowboy, a groundbreaking film that delves into the gritty life of a wannabe male prostitute in New York City. With stellar performances by Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman, this movie is a masterpiece that stands the test of time. Finally, they discuss The Wild Bunch, a film that redefined action and Western genres with its raw, unfiltered portrayal of violence and camaraderie. Directed by Sam Peckinpah, it's a gritty tale of outlaws facing the end of their era. Join us as we explore these iconic films and their impact on the world of cinema. Enjoy the journey through the transformative year of 1968!

We're staying in the 60s this week and with Patty Duke, but instead of sparkling as Neely O'Hara she's learning to fold her napkin and beating the crap out of Annie Sullivan in “The Miracle Worker”! Duke and Anne Bancroft deservedly both won Oscars in this portrayal of Helen Keller's arduous journey to learn not only how to read and speak but the concept of words and letters. And also discipline and table manners, much to the dismay of her coddling mother Kate (best supporting Inga Swenson) and Aubrey List inductee Captain Keller, which gives us the iconic 10 minute breakfast scene. We discuss the parallels with parenting children with special needs, and of course our own irrelevant experience as pet parents, we turn a corner on Helen Keller jokes and are inspired to channel our own inner Annie's. TVC 644.6a: Greg Ehrbar discusses the Kino Lorber Blu-ray release of The Daydreamer (1966), a feature-length live-action and Animagic-animated adaptation of some of the most famous fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen that was produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, and which featured the talents of Hayley Mills, Tallulah Bankhead, Jack Guilford, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Boris Karloff, Burl Ives, Victor Borge, Terry-Thomas, Ed Wynn, Patty Duke, and Robert Goulet. Though unsuccessful at the box office at the time it was originally released, The Daydreamer, in many respects, served as a precursor to the many television specials that Rankin-Bass produced throughout the 1970s. Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Many will remember Patty Duke, playing the part of Helen Keller in the movie “The Miracle Worker,” for which she received an Oscar. At the time, Patty was 16 and the youngest person to have received an Academy Award for Supporting Actress. But she also won two Golden Globe awards and three Emmys. And Patty had a top 10 hit on the Billboard charts. If you were around in the 60s, you probably watched the “Patty Duke Show” and who could forget Neely O'Hara in the “Valley of the Dolls?” Her part in this movie, as an alcoholic, drug-addicted singing star, almost ruined her career. The critics and audiences had a hard time accepting this all-American teenager playing a very adult role.

We're taking a short break from covering Christmas movies by talking about Arthur Penn's The Miracle Worker. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke are tremendous as the battling teacher and student. Both won Oscars as Bancroft's Anne Sullivan teaches manners and ASL to Duke's deaf and blind Helen Keller. The real Keller was intelligent, stubborn, ferocious and---disabilities or not---also a bit of a jerk. Sullivan pushes back though and DOESN'T have the patience of Job. This is a hard job, especially during their epic 9-minute battle in the dining room. The Miracle Worker is a movie about making connections and they eventually do that...as do we by comparing this difficult girl to our beloved dogs. Forgive us, it's what we know best. Arizona Republic, June 11th, 1973 “If you loved the old radio shows, you'll like what KOOL-FM has in store for you. The station has bought the brand-new radio drama series, The Zero Hour, which promises to revive the good old days, but in a modern format. “Announcing the new series was E. Morgan Skinner Jr., promoted last week from KOOL-AM account executive to KOOL-FM assistant station manager. Judging from the pilot tape, it should be an interesting show. Each story lasts a week. A half-hour episode is presented nightly, Monday through Friday, with the climax coming on Friday. A new show starts the following Monday. “KOOL has bought twenty-six weeks of the series, all that Hollywood Radio Theater has available so far. The program originally was to be started in mid-June, but the unsettled Writers Guild of America strike apparently has created some delay. “Current plans are to begin in mid-July. Each show will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. on KOOL-FM and then rebroadcast on KOOL-AM at 10:30 p.m. "But that's during television's prime time," you say? That's the whole point. "Zero Hour is contemporary, but reflective of radio's golden era," said Skinner. “And they're doing the thing in such a way as to leave people free to utilize their minds. “By Beginning in July, it takes the series into the fall to compete against the new shows on TV. A lot of us have become disenchanted with what television has to deliver. "It's going to be interesting to see what a top-quality radio series will do against prime-time TV. The quality of this show is superb. It's crisp and well-done." “Hollywood Radio Theater is the brainchild of Jay M. Kholos, a veteran in the advertising and communications field. Rod Serling hosts the series. The first episode, titled "The Wife of the Red-Haired Man," stars Patty Duke Astin, John Astin and Howard Duff. The yarn is about the pursuit of a dead couple. Duff, of course, does the pursuing.” — Jack Swanson Before this September 3rd, 1973 debut episode of The Zero Hour, over WRVR 106.7FM in New York, Kholos spent the summer of 1973 traveling around, selling the series to stations in Syndication. After that, he was joined by Rod Serling on a promotional tour. Radio legend Les Tremayne played Patty Duke's husband Albert. In November 1973, Howard Duff was a guest of Dick Bertel and Ed Corcoran's WTIC Golden Age of Radio program. He spoke positively about his experience with The Zero Hour.

November 1st, 1973. The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York City. We're listening in on a press conference hosted by the Mutual Broadcasting System. They've purchased the rights to air The Zero Hour from the just-heard Jay M. Kholos. The Zero Hour has thus far been hosted by Rod Serling and directed by Elliott Lewis. It's Mutual's first dramatic radio show in nearly twenty years. As Mutual Broadcasting spent much of the 1950s changing ownership groups, while national advertising was slowly abandoning radio for TV, Mutual ended its last two remaining half-hour dramas, Counterspy and Gangbusters, in November of 1957. Sports and news began to take up the majority of the network's programming. Throughout the 1960s more frequent ownership and management changes continued to create network instability, before C. Edward Little was named president in 1972. During his time as President, Little created the Mutual Black Network, the Mutual Spanish Network, and the Mutual Southwest Network. Under Little's administration, Mutual became the first commercial broadcasting entity to use satellite technology for program delivery. He also hired Larry King to host an all-night phone-in talk show. King was a one-time announcer for Little at WGMA in Florida. He went on to national fame in both radio and TV, winning a coveted Peabody Award along the way. But that's not why we're eavesdropping in 1973. We're here for the return of dramatic programming on network radio in the form of The Zero Hour which had been airing in syndication since the fall. Why is this such a momentous event? How did we get to this point? Tonight, we'll find out. ____________ The last network big four radio drama, Theater Five, ran on ABC and was launched on August 3rd, 1964. Unfortunately by the mid 1960s network radio had undergone a transformation. Theater Five's half-hour time slot only allocated twenty-one minutes for story-time. The other nine minutes went to news, station identification, and local advertising. ABC's affiliates also had the first right of refusal. In some big markets Theater Five ran on other radio stations. Two-hundred-fifty-six total episodes were produced before Theater Five was canceled after the July 30th, 1965 episode. For the next seven years, except for any dramatic vignettes on NBC's Monitor, NBC, CBS, ABC, and Mutual broadcasting's network fed programming was relegated to news, sports, talk, and music. Then in early 1973, an entrepreneurial ad man named Jay M. Kholos had a big idea. He grew up in Southern California around the entertainment and media industry. Kholos' idea? He sensed an oncoming nostalgia wave and wanted to relaunch a high-production, serialized audio drama, but updated for the modern sensibilities of 1973. Kholos needed a hook. He felt by telling one story in five half hours over the course of a contained week, he could keep the listener's attention and get them to tune back in. Enter Rod Serling, famed creator of The Twilight Zone. Serling had worked in radio, in Springfield, Marion, Columbus, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Kholos was soon in touch with Elliott Lewis. By 1973, he had nearly forty years of experience as a writer, director, actor, and producer. Kholos was able to secure the rights to several stories. Now, he needed acting talent. The goal was to pair name brand film and TV talent with the best Hollywood radio veterans. Howard Duff could have fit into either category. By the 1970s, Duff and Elliott Lewis had been friends for thirty years. They both helped grow the Armed Forces Radio Service during World War II. Duff was chosen, along with Patty Duke and John Astin to lead the first cast in an adaptation of Bill S. Ballanger's The Wife of the Red-Haired Man. Kholos put the program under the umbrella of The Hollywood Radio Theater. They chose Radio Recorders, the largest independent studio in Los Angeles, for the program. The Zero Hour would debut in late summer.

Boze Hadleigh talks to Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his fabulous new book “Game Show Confidential” published by Lyons Press and distributed by the National Book Network. At a time when books are being censored across the country this must-read LGBTQ inclusive book covers a fascinating history of the game show genre. Since first appearing on radio broadcasts in the 1930's to the current phenomenon dominating our broadcast culture, game shows continue to draw huge audiences. We especially saw an insurgence of this popular programming during COVID providing TV audiences with its “feel good” entertainment. “Game Show Confidential” describes the evolution of the game show with its larger-than-life producers and hosts as well as the scandals that have rocked it from time to time. Back in 1954 the FCC tried to ban television game shows but the Supreme Court disagreed. Then came the 1958 game show scandals that led to a Congressional investigation into the rigging of game shows which director Robert Redford zeroed in on in the film "Quiz Show". During that time an interesting fact was ex contestant and child star Patty Duke appeared before a Congressional investigating committee and broke down crying admitting she'd been coached by adults to lie. “Game Show Confidential” also addresses the misogyny, bigotry and homophobia that have dominated the genre until recently. Though we now have women hosting primetime games show like Jane Lynch, Ellen Degeneres and Elizabeth Banks, when Betty White was set to host a 1960's game show, ABC vetoed having a female host. We talked to Boze about his inspiration for writing “Game Show Confidential” and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.  Boze Hadleigh has published 29 books primarily on show business that are all LGBTQ inclusive though they're not all gay-themed. Hadleigh is the #1 author on our LGBTQ presence in the entertainment industry especially Hollywood. The Los Angeles Times dubbed him a "pop culture phenomenon." Hadleigh holds a Master's in journalism, speaks five languages and won on the TV game show "Jeopardy!" Boze's LGBTQ inclusive titles include Hollywood Gays, The Lavender Screen, Sing Out!, Broadway Babylon, Celebrity Lies!, Marilyn Forever, An Actor Succeeds, “Hollywood Lesbians: From Garbo To Foster, Inside the Hollywood Closet: A Book of Quotes and currently Game Show Confidential.  For More Info… LISTEN: 600+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Now we're not saying that podcasting or vloging has taken over her medium of writing, but we will say that Sue doesn't do it quite as often as she used to. Thirteen years ago, Sue wrote this post called “The Patty Duke Flu”, and since the new year gave her a bought of upper respiratory craziness, we thought it would be fun to revisit that blogpost, and maybe add a few spiritual and historical facts at the end. Hello again film chums. Today we finish off a big batch of rare 70's gems, mostly. Please reach out if you want help acquiring any of them. First off we review the film adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's (Happy birthday Wanda June 1971) Rod Steiger and Susan York star in yet another in a very long line of 70's movies based on plays. Also with this one as my English professor used to say “If it gets deep, start swimming.” Next we have (Sandcastles 1972) Which was a made for tv film that sadly sounds a lil more trippy than it is. It is weird though and does have Jan Michael Vincent, and Mariette Hartley from that one episode of Star Trek where Spock gets into primitivism. Travel with us now to (OZ 1976) later called 20th century oz. This is definitely trippy and quite fab n magical in bits. Features the whirlybird pilot in the road warrior. Next up is (A circle of children 1977). Jane Alexander stars as Mary who takes on the treatment of disabled children, bringing us along for the ride. Far from perfect but it does look right at it which was a definite positive step. Willis from different strokes is here, as well as Rachel Robert's as Helga. Movin right along to (Thieves 1977) Marlo Thomas and Charles Gordin, Star in this sadly out of print dark comedy directed by John Berry (Claudine- podcast coming very soon) Would you believe that this film is based off a play. Wow. Finally today we review (Before and after 1979) This is another made for tv film that gets a lot of once taboo stuff out there, so we can talk about it and deal. Here it's weight loss, anorexia, body image, shitty husbands etc. May be the first film to mention anorexia. Omg Betty White plays quite a sadist in this. stars Patty Duke, Barbara Feldon, Art Hindle, and is directed by Star Trek director Kim Friedman. Written by Hindi Brooks. Thanks for listening everyone.
