Director Ridley Scott discusses his new film, Gladiator II, with fellow Director Fede Alvarez in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses how he decided on casting Actor Paul Mescal in the lead role, how he distances himself from the post process so he and his team have space to do their best work, and which of his legacy films he would preserve if he could only choose one. The sequel to Scott's 2000 film Gladiator takes place years after the events of the first film and follows Lucius—who as a child witnessed the revered hero Maximus die at the hands of his uncle. As his home is conquered and he is forced to fight as a gladiator in the Colosseum, Lucius attempts to reclaim everything he has lost. Cinematographer John Mathieson, BSC began his career shooting music videos for bands like Nirvana and Hole, moving into documentaries and commercials before working in feature films. Rather than going to film school, he joined friends who formed a film collective and everyone learned from each other. Director Ridley Scott saw his work on the movie, Plunkett & Macleane, and approached him to shoot Gladiator. “I never thought I'd be the sword and sandals guy,” says John. “I was doing grunge videos!” John was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Gladiator. For Gladiator II, John embraced the advancements in visual effects technology, which allowed for more efficient and creative storytelling. While the film was shot digitally, his approach to cinematography remained similar to the first film. “We didn't do much different with the cameras or the language of the story,” he says, “but parts of the filmmaking process have gotten faster and easier. We shot on digital in about half the time it took to shoot Gladiator.” John focused on creating a visually striking world in Gladiator II, inspired by historical paintings and the contrasting environments of Rome and the desert. He wanted high contrast lighting, especially in the desert scenes at the beginning of the film and in the gladiator arena so that it looked dusty, hot, and overexposed. In contrast, the light inside the Roman homes is warmer and richer. John describes it as, “Everything's got dust and then Rome is colorful, opulent- grapes, wine, peacock greens, paisleys, fabrics, all that kind of decadence-it's camp, it's vulgar, it's Vegas 1970.” When choosing projects, John prioritizes scripts that resonate with him and directors who can effectively guide the filmmaking process. He enjoys exploring and working in different film genres. “I like to think I don't have a style, you know, that I can adapt to what is on the page or what is important,” he says. Gladiator II is currently in theaters. Interested in more Gladiator? Twenty four years after being asked by Maximus "Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?", we are asking the same question about the legacy sequel "Gladiator II". Director Ridley Scott returns to the floor of the Coliseum to once again entertain us with battles, violence, political intrigue and even some returning characters. Daniel Chadwick-Shubat of Get Reel Movies, Aaron Neuwirth from We Live Entertainment, and Nicole Ayers of the MadLabPost are here to let you know what they thought of this extravaganza of Roman mayhem and pseudo history. Russell Crowe is not back, but his persona hangs over this film in so many ways. Is Denzel Washington enough to make this movie satisfy the crowd? You will have to watch and listen to find out.

If there's one more TV show about a girl found in the woods who has been raped and dead for 25 years? Stop. It gives people ideas.”What do you think? Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast

After taking a detour into Beetlejuice land, The Three Men And A Retrospective Podcast returns to the Alien franchise discussing a film that, well, needs to be discussed. Director Ridley Scott had always wanted to return to the franchise that put him on the map. But after Fox decided to move forward with the Alien vs Predator films, it would seem he was permanently soured on it. Five years after Aliens vs Predator Requiem, Scott's desire was reinvigorated. Bringing together a cast that included Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, and Michael Fassbender, among others, Scott put Prometheus out in the summer of 2012. At least one member of this podcast was really looking forward to it, and while the film ended up making a lot of money, it seemed to be lost amongst a ton of mixed reviews and discussions of what Scott actually wanted to make. Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they add to that discussion recording a review Garrett has wanted to do since they started this podcast. And be sure to return next week, as Adam returns to territory he swore he would never return to. That of Alien Covenant. Also, keep a lookout for a special Halloween review that returns to territory the boys have covered before. What is it? Stay tuned

Director Ridley Scott is having a grand old time of it his later years, putting out some of his wildest films. The Last Duel was a totally underrated true life historical movie, yet actually it's House of Gucci that Napoleon is far closer to. It fails its main job of delivering a convincing biopic of its titular character but succeeds in being entertaining - if draining - due to how completely crazy it is.

Brilliantly adapted from the book by Sara Gay Forden, "The House of Gucci," this film comes to life through the talents of Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, and a very strong supporting cast. It is beautifully filmed, well acted, and a treat for anyone who loves fashion. In this episode of Chick Flick Chat you can listen without worry if you haven't see the movie yet, because I avoided spoiling the plot. It is a fascinating story since it's true. This month, your friendly Oscarologists, Mark, Izzy and Vincent, discuss the Academy's penchant for historical epics. Braveheart, directed by and starring Mel Gibson, tells the story of hero and warrior William Wallace, who leads the Scots in the First War of Scottish Independence against wily King Edward I played by Patrick McGoohan. Director Ridley Scott - one of modern Hollywood's main purveyors of sword and sandal movies - gained a Best Director nomination for Gladiator, winning Best Picture. Russell Crowe stars as Maximus Decimus Meridius, general turned slave turned arena fighter, out for revenge again Joaquin Phoenix's Emperor Commodus.  Thank you to Thomas Whitelaw for our intro music and Rachel Valentine Smith for our artwork. "Blade Runner" opened in theaters in 1982. Director Ridley Scott creates a cityscape of Los Angeles in 2019. The film has many aspects of film noir blended into a future where synthetic humans or replicants are produced to work on planets, asteroids and other objects scattered throughout space. These replicants are prohibited from being on Earth. When four Nexus-6 replicants escape back to Earth, Rick Deckard played by Harrison Ford is persuaded to hunt them. Deckard is a former police officer and now a "Blade Runner" who is authorized to eliminate or "retire" the four fugitives. The four replicants are Roy Batty the leader played by Rutger Hauer, Pris - Daryl Hannah, Leon Kowalski - Brion James and Zhora Salome - Joanna Cassidy. Sean Young plays Rachael an employee of the Tyrell Corporation makers of replicants. Deckard and Rachael form a bond that is a key part of the film. As a part of our April 11 and 12, 2020 virtual film festival we watched the final cut of the film that is, in our opinion, the best of the seven versions of "Blade Runner". Enjoy this exciting film. Director Ridley Scott delivered an uplifting version of Andy Weir’s THE MARTIAN, doing the book justice in many ways. Matt Damon makes for a compelling Mark Watney, and even brings a little something to the role that James & Luke found lacking in the novel. The incredible ensemble cast also consists of Jessica Chastain, Sean Bean, Donald Glover, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Mackenzie Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristin Wiig, Michael Piña, and Benedict Wong. Topics: Watching the extended edition, Barack Obama’s taste in movies, Andy Weir’s surprising phobia, Glorfindel and the Council of Elrond, the challenges of conveying alternate gravity, the surprising definition of Watney’s choice of profanity, the salt-shaker trope, and the potential weaknesses with the changes made to the ending of the story. Director Ridley Scott recently got put in front of a microphone at the Venice Film Festival, where he opined about the state of affairs in Hollywood, and while expressing his opinion he stumbled into almost quoting renowned science fiction author Theodore Sturgeon: Scott: "I think movies are getting dumber, actually. Where it used to be 50/50, now it's 3% good, 97% stupid." Sturgeon: "I repeat Sturgeon's Revelation, which was wrung out of me after twenty years of wearying defense of science fiction against attacks of people who used the worst examples of the field for ammunition, and whose conclusion was that ninety percent of SF is crud. Using the same standards that categorize 90% of science fiction as trash, crud, or crap, it can be argued that 90% of film, literature, consumer goods, etc. is crap. In other words, the claim (or fact) that 90% of science fiction is crap is ultimately uninformative, because science fiction conforms to the same trends of quality as all other artforms." Sturgeon first shared that in the March 1958 issue of Venture magazine, and the "Revelation" has since been distilled down into Sturgeon's Law: "90 percent of everything is crap". Is Scott right? Have we descended in a spiral toward mediocrity and sad hollow shells of the Hollywood of olde? Or has this kind of ratio always been around?

Moses, Moses, Moses. One of the most fascinating characters of the entire Bible. So fascinating in fact that Director Ridley Scott and Actor Christian Bale have decided it was worth spending almost $150 million dollars making a movie to tell his story. But before Hollywood turns it's creative engines toward the story of Moses we thought we would take some time this fall to explore his story through the biblical lens. No character has had as deep an impact on the shape of the Jewish scriptures as Moses. He speaks face-to-face with God, heads a revolt against the Pharaoh, leads his people out into the wilderness, and is credited by some with authoring Torah (the first five books of the Bible). And yet, somehow, Moses remains a very human character accessible to all of us. Over the next eight weeks we will follow Moses from his ignominious beginnings as a baby in a basket through to his destiny as the leader of a fledgling nation. Hang on.★ Support this podcast ★

Director Ridley Scott became an overnight sensation when he directed the tightly-knit sci-fi horror thriller Alien. Over 30 years later, he would return to the franchise that started it all for him after the likes of James Cameron and David Fincher. And yet can the film eventually called Prometheus have anything to do with the beloved series? Eric and guest stars Jeannie of Nerdy Dirty and John D. of Legends Podcast return with the help of a rejuvenated Lauren to face the truth of the matter. And in the process, they talk about bad science and even worse science procedure, biblical context in sci-fi, and the ever-popular Michael Fassbender genital commentary.

With Mark Lawson. Director Ridley Scott returns to science fiction with Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. It follows a group of scientists who travel to a distant world, where they encounter a threat to human existence. How does it compare to Scott's earlier blockbuster, Alien? Naomi Alderman gives her verdict. Michael Morpurgo and his biographer Maggie Fergusson discuss how they have collaborated on his life story, From War Child to War Horse. In seven chapters she describes how the unbookish boy who wanted to be an army officer became a best-selling children's author; and Michael responds with seven new stories. They reflect on the sometimes painful aspects of his childhood and his relationship with his own children. Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. Well, fifty episodes! Dark Discussions reaches a milestone of some significance but just like prior weeks we are here once more to discuss genre cinema intelligently, in depth, and like fans should: with passion. This week your four co-hosts come together once more and decided on a topic that happens to be thirty-three years old. Unlike the age of the film itself, the movie is once more about to have relevance that could determine the fate of big budget R-rated horror films for decades to come. Alien, 1979’s science fiction masterpiece, came together with an odd mix of talent and luck. Screenwriter Dan O’Bannon, suffering from crohn’s disease, came up with an idea of an alien entity using human hosts as incubators. He turned his personal discomfort from his illness into one of the most iconic scenes in film history. Director Ridley Scott, film scorer Jerry Goldsmith, and artist H.R. Giger came aboard and with the highly figuratively filled script produced a dark horrific movie that turned science fiction film from Star Trek cheese to industrial working class grime. Now over thirty years later, with both Dan O’Bannon and Jerry Goldsmith no longer with us, Ridley Scott once more has returned to the source of his success. Using Alien as a basis, his new film 2012’s Prometheus is to be released in June. The film trailers have brought high hopes to all science fiction and horror fans alike. Your co-hosts, Chris, Eric, Mike, and Phil discuss Alien, its legacy, and how Prometheus may tie back in with the original. Listeners, thank you for coming along on our fifty episode podcast journey, and as co-host Eric suggests in closing, let’s do fifty more.
