Ukulele ambassador and songwriter, Jake Shimabukuro captivates audiences around the world with his unique and dynamic style. With his mother as his first teacher of the instrument, Jake embraced a deep love and respect for the ukulele and has explored new and unexpected ways to push the boundaries of what was possible on the humble four-string instrument. Each of his albums showcases his mastery and his ability to weave together diverse genres to create a cohesive and mesmerizing musical experience. He is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and exciting musicians of his generation, changing the perception of the instrument itself and breaking barriers of what kind of music it is capable of. Jake has enjoyed critically-acclaimed duets with artists from Willie Nelson, Ziggy Marley and Bette Midler to Jimmy Buffett, Jack Johnson and Kenny Loggins. In addition to his impeccable musicianship, Jake is also a gifted storyteller, weaving together musical narratives that draw listeners in and leave them spellbound. On his newest live album, Grateful, he wanted to bring together the power of each artist's story as he collaborated with Hawaiian music legend Henry Kapono, Mark Yamanaka, John Feary, Herb Ohta Jr., Del Beazley, Pōmaika`i Keawe, Nathan Aweau, John Cruz, Raiatea Helm, Fiji, Ron Artis II, Kimié Miner, Brother Noland, Kawika Kahiapo, Jeff Peterson, America's Got Talent contestant, Connor Johnson; Chris Kamaka & Bryan Tolentino, Jon Yamasato and Lopaka Colón, of “Pure Heart.”

Uketropolis: Ukulele Q&A with James Hill

Welcome to Uketropolis, a podcast with real ukulele answers to real ukulele questions. I'm your host, James Hill. I'm a lifelong ukulele player, teacher and believer in the power of ukulele to make positive change in the world. I've written and co-written several ukulele methods including Booster Uke, The Ukulele Way and Ukulele in the Classroom. I'm also the co-founder of the JHUI Teacher Certification Program and in 2019 I brought all of these education projects into one place and called it Uketropolis.com. Thousands of students worldwide have formed a warm, supportive learning community around these resources and what I do every week in this podcast is I choose a few real student questions from Uketropolis.com and offer my suggestions and thoughts on those questions.I want to take a moment to acknowledge that I'm a third-generation Canadian ukulele player and that many players and teachers have paved the way for the work I've done as a teacher, player and author. First, thank you to the Godfather of Canadian ukulele, my friend and mentor, J. Chalmers Doane, my childhood teachers Jamie Thomas and Peter Luongo and many others along the way who kept the ukulele flame alive long before the third wave. Thank you Bonnie Smith, Bill Wallace, Warren Dobson, Cam Trowsdale, Lorna MacPhee, Marven Shields, Jody Wood, Vince and Charlene Sequeira, Tina Horwood and so many other devoted ukulele educators. A special thank you to my teachers and friends in Hawaii who inspired me and, long ago, embraced this young Canadian ukulele player and welcomed "Kimo Pu'u" into their musical 'ohana: Ohta-san, Herb Ohta Jr., Kimo Hussey, Byron Yasui, Benny Chong, Ledward Kaapana, Dennis Kamakahi, Roy and Kathy Sakuma. Everything I know about ukulele has been shaped by what you've shown me and I'm very grateful to pass on some of that knowledge and aloha in this podcast.Thank you for listening and I'll see you in Episode 1!

My guests on this episode are The Lee Sisters! As you’ve heard they are launching their first-ever CD. I’m so honored to have them both on this show and I cannot wait for you all to hear about how they got started. You’ll even get a sneak peek at two songs from the CD later on in the show concluding with the lightning round. So you’ll want to listen all the way to the end for that. First, I would like to shout to out Uncle Kamaka Brown, the creative director of the Sandwich Islands Network Radio, 24-7 online streaming of island contemporary music at V93FM.com for the introduction to Lise more than a year ago. Shout out to Nate Yaris for helping with the music and of course Red Light Fever Studios in Tujunga, Calif. and the masterwork of engineer-extraordinaire Kristofer Traynor. Sisters in real life, the girls have been performing throughout California and Hawaii since 2015. The Lee Sisters’ ukulele adventure began in January 2015 when they were invited by Kanile'a Ukulele to play at the NAMM show in Anaheim, Calif., the world’s largest music convention. Since then, they've been invited to perform at dozens of festivals and events throughout SoCal, including the Heritage of Aloha Festival in Santa Fe Springs (where Lise was the winner of their 2015 ukulele competition). In Hawaii, they have performed as guests of Bryan Tolentino and Herb Ohta Jr. at the Kani Ka Pila Grille, the Moana Terrace at Marriott Waikiki as guests of Alan Akaka and the Keawe Ohana Show, and most recently at Disney’s Aulani Resort as guests of The Makaha Sons. The Lee Sisters recorded two original ukulele pieces for an EP released by Sandwich Islands Network (SIN) Radio entitled “California 808,” and recently completed their own original album called “Uke Shoes.” Surprisingly, they have only been playing the ukulele for five years…and are self-taught!
