Jack Johnson, the first Black world heavyweight champion, and Jim Jeffries, the so-called "Great White Hope", slugged it out in Reno, Nevada on 4th July, 1910 - in one of the most explosive sporting events in American sports history. Literally billed as a battle for racial supremacy, the fight attracted 20,000 paying fans - and sparked the biggest race riots in the United States until the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. Jeffries came out of retirement for a fat paycheck. Johnson danced circles around him, forcing his corner to throw in the towel by round 15. To many white Americans, this wasn't just a loss; it was an existential meltdown in boxing gloves. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Johnson's brashness and defiance made him a marked man; explore how his triumph resonated in Black America, just one generation after emancipation; and reveal what Sylvester Stallone contributed to his place in the history books... https://littleboxofquotes.com/ — Each day's quote is available as a podcast and by email from my Little Box of Quotes. A long time ago I began collecting inspirational quotes and aphorisms. I kept them on the first version of my web site, where they were displayed randomly. But as time went on, I realized I wanted them where I would see them. Eventually I copied the fledgeling collection onto 3×5 cards and put them in a small box. As I find new ones, I add cards. Today, there are more than 1,500 quotes and the collection continues to grow. Hello

It's June 3rd. This day in 1913, boxer Jack Johnson is sentenced under the Mann Act, a vice law that sought to curb prostitution -- though many saw the sentencing as targeing Johnson for being a prominent and outspoken Black athlete.Jody, Niki, and Kellie discuss Johnson's boxing career, the many "great White hope" boxers he defeated, and how his prosecution reflected larger fears about miscegination and Black athletic achievement.Sign up for our newsletter! Guitarist Sonny Sharrock was one of the most forward-thinking guitarists coming out of the '60s, and his music stayed on the cutting edge throughout his long career. His credits include Miles Davis' Jack Johnson and Herbie Mann—next to whom he performed in Questlove's 2021 documentary, Summer of Soul—and his tunes have been covered by Santana and the Messthetics. But it's as a bandleader and collaborator where Sharrock cut his wildest recordings. As groundbreaking as Sharrock's music could be, his distorted tone and melodic tunes helped bring rock listeners into the jazz tent. Our callers let us know how much Sharrock meant to them and why he's one of the “top guys of all time.” Episode sponsored by Focusrite: focusrite.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. This man has toured the world selling soul with Jack Johnson, and now he's weaving ritual code into the circuitry of corporate America, transforming screens into shrines and feedback loops into fractal spirals.Jacob Tell is a media mystic. A brand bard. A chaos conductor at the intersection of commerce and cosmic consciousness. He builds platforms like ayahuasca brews — thick with intention, humming with serpents of data and rhythm, asking not for your clicks, but for your initiation. The man doesn't just disrupt — he dismembers the mundane. His new platform, Storywall, is less tech and more technoshamanic mirror — a dancefloor for your digital twin, where memory morphs in real time and each interaction is a prayer. In an era ruled by dopamine loops and doomscroll death cults, Jacob builds holy interfaces — spaces that remind us of the mythic, that connect the neural-networks of community with the blood-wired nodes of the human spirit. If Terence McKenna, Steve Jobs, and the DMT elves held a hackathon in a sacred Redwood Grove during a solar eclipse, the blueprint would look a lot like what Jacob's building. So grab your tuning forks, your vaporwave prayer beads, your legally ambiguous sacrament, and strap your soul to the signal — because this is not content, this is ceremony. This is TRUELIFE with JACOB TELL — and it's about to get… ineffable.Jacob TellAbout — District216 Support the show:https://www.paypal.me/Truelifepodcast?locale.x=en_USCheck out our YouTube:https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPzfOaFtA1hF8UhnuvOQnTgKcIYPI9Ni9&si=Jgg9ATGwzhzdmjkgGrow your own:https://modernmushroomcultivation.com/This Band Will Blow Your Mind: Codex Serafinihttps://codexserafini.bandcamp.com/album/the-imprecation-of-anima
