Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing whether or not Muggles would have evolved the way that we did if witches and wizards had never gone into hiding. For centuries leading up to the late 1700s, individuals with magical abilities—primarily witches—were hunted down and persecuted by Muggles. In what would later be referred to as the infamous witch hunts, formal and informal trials were held between the 14th and 18th centuries in which global communities tried and executed around 40,000 to 60,000 people. 50-to-70,000 more people were accused without being condemned. Among these witch hunts were the infamous Salem Witch Trials of the early 1690s, where the brutalities of the American townsfolk killed 19 people for crimes that included worshipping the devil and taking part in sinful activities. Around this same time, in the latter half of the 1700s, people with magical abilities—who had previously lived openly among Muggles—disappeared from Muggle society. This, of course, was due to the institution of the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, a law that was conceived to protect the wizarding world from the threats of ill-advised Muggles, which went into effect in the year of 1689.This is also around the same time in history in which Muggles began rapidly evolving. The introduction of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1692 marked a pivotal moment in Wizarding history. It put a stop to the witch hunts and unjust persecution of witches and wizards. It ushered in an era of harmonious co-existence. And most importantly, it separated the two worlds: muggle and magical. But what IF there was a darker element to the statute that has never been properly explored?- an element that concerned the muggles beyond the primary separation of the two worlds? What if the statute, and the subsequent formation of the Ministry of Magic- marked the dawn of an era wherein wizardkind stealthily wielded control over the non-magical world, deftly manipulating it from the concealed depths of the shadows? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're going to be taking a look at muggle/wizard affairs throughout history. When we crack open our history books, and take a look at famous events and conflicts between muggles and the wizarding world, you might be surprised at what you find. Before the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy, which was established in the year 1692, wizards weren't exactly unknown. Although, even at that time, many considered the concept of witches and wizards outlandish… There were plenty of people who had firsthand experience with members of the wizarding world. In fact, in different corners of the world, at varying times, entire countries were swept into anti-magic crazes that threatened to destroy almost every magic-using man, woman, and child in their community. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the history of the British Ministry of Magic. Of course, there are A LOT of things that took place there throughout the Harry Potter series. But today, we'll be focusing on what happened PRIOR to our dear boy Harry showing up on the wizarding scene.  Formed in 1707, the British Ministry of Magic is the main governing body of the magical community of the United Kingdom and Ireland. It was created to preserve magical law within Great Britain and represent these countries to the larger Wizarding World. Its formation came as a direct result of the previously created Wizards' Council.  “Prior to 1707, the Wizards' Council was the longest serving (though not the only) body to govern the magical community in Britain. After the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1692, however, the wizarding community needed a more highly structured, organised and more complex governing structure than they had hitherto used, to support, regulate and communicate with a community in hiding. “ This, of course, led to what is now known as the Ministry of Magic.  Let's continue... Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing Magical LAW. That's right, just like the muggle society, witches and wizards are confined to behaving within the framework of law and order. We saw a little bit of this in the films- like when Harry had a disciplinary hearing before the Wizengamot. In this instance, Harry had performed underage magic (a Patronus Charm) in order to ward off Dementors attacking him and his cousin Dudley. "Disciplinary hearing of the twelfth of August, into offences committed under the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery and the International Statute of Secrecy by Harry James Potter, resident at number four, Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey.” Fortunately for Harry, Dumbledore stepped in and protected him- which resulted in Harry walking away with no charges. However, underage magic is just ONE ‘law' in a wizarding society that actually has a lot more laws than you may have thought. Today we're going to be uncovering them- at least, all of the ones we have information on. I should also add that I won't be conflating ‘Law' in the sense of legislation with ‘Law' in the sense of a set of principles or scientific axioms. I.e. the ‘Law' for underage magic is a piece of legislation prohibiting the use of underage magic and GAMP'S LAW is a set of scientific principles.  Let's dive in.

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the LEAKY CAULDRON - a famous wizarding pub and inn that serves as a gateway between the muggle and magical worlds. More specifically, we're going to be discussing WHETHER OR NOT Muggles can enter this magical pub, as there seems to be conflicting information floating around. Now, provided that the famous wizarding pub is a GATEWAY between both worlds, it should go without saying that it has TWO entrances- one in Diagon Alley, and another on the Muggle street of Charing Cross Road in London's West End.However, it's also worth noting that the Leaky Cauldron (built in the early 1500s) existed long before Charing Cross Road had ever even been conceived- existing far in advance of the Muggle street. In fact, the Leaky Cauldron was created TWO CENTURIES before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy- which meant that it had always been VISIBLE to Muggle eyes."While the pub was, from the first, a place for witches and wizards to congregate - whether Londoners or out-of-towners up for the day to shop for the latest magical ingredients or devices - Muggles were not turned away or made to feel unwelcome, even though some of the conversations, not to mention pets, caused many an unwary drinker to leave without finishing his mead."It's now hard to imagine that a fully-fledged wizarding pub / HUB could be allowed to exist with direct access from a Muggle street- but those were different times. It's even HARDER to imagine if we consider that the persecution of witches / wizards was widespread in Britain only a few centuries earlier. But in the present day- what's the deal with the Leaky Cauldron? If it exists on a muggle street, how could it NOT be accessible? Socials: https://linktr.ee/hptheory Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're looking at muggle/wizard affairs throughout history, starting as far back as 382 BC. Today, we're going to take a look at some of these events, and their long-lasting legacy, as we discuss the history of muggle and wizard affairs. If you think of the modern world, then the fact that Muggles and the wizards don't intermingle is a foregone conclusion.  After all, the ministry of magic had worked tirelessly, for centuries, in order to keep their constituents a secret.   But when we look back in time, to the earliest records, we find a very different landscape. In the official history of the wizarding world, the earliest date documented is 382 B.C.  That's the year that a Roman ancestor of Garrick Ollivander, the wandmaker from Diagon Alley in Great Britain, created their first branch in ancient Rome.   There's more than a 1,000 year gap between that date, and the next listed event in official wizarding records.  So, if we were to try and guess what happened, and how the wizarding world might have interacted with muggles of that time, we'll have to rely on our detective skills.
