Potter Revisited Episode #118 Hastily Wrapped Fondue Pot AKA Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 20 "Hagrid's Tale" Tori recalls her childhood babysitter encouraging her to finish this chapter  Is this chapter a bit dull compared to the previous? Harry has just gotten in so much trouble and kicked off the Quidditch team but he is willing to risk it all to see Hagrid  Shay does not understand how big the Invisibility Cloak is - how does it fit three teenagers? Despite it being against the rules and right after a long trip, Hagrid is happy to see the trio It's been a long book so far without Hagrid The films played it very safe with Hagrid's appearance  Shay is not a fan of the green ooze  Hagrid is trying so hard to keep his secret operation a secret but the trio will not give up, they are just so nosy It's interesting to think that Hagrid left for this mission at the very end of GoF and is only getting back now part way through the term  Fudge had someone tailing Hagrid immediately at the end of GoF - or has he always had someone keeping an eye on Dumbledore's inner circle? Finding Giants isn't hard according to Hagrid  What did Hagrid get into a disagreement with a Vampire about?  Shay appreciates the trio using their Slytherin traits to coerce Hagrid to talk about his mission with them in exchange for catching him up on what happened to Harry  Hagrid's tale about the giants is actually quite grim for a children's book  Wizards 100% contributed to the giants current predicament and it is nice the story includes it  Shay can grudgingly admit that Dumbledore played this right diplomatically  Was the battle helmet giving to the Giant Grug commissioned for a Giant head? How did Dumbledore manage to have this? Hagrid's mission is thrown off by the Grug they were working with being killed off soon into their operation Hagrid was unfortunately not able to recruit any Giants to the cause which is disheartening   Love Hagrid's admiration for Madame Maxime Hagrid and the trio are interrupted by Umbridge paying Hagrid a visit Why is Umbridge bothering Hagrid so late at night? Surely her interrogation could wait until a respectable hour +1 sucks point  Umbridge speaks to Hagrid so rudely, obviously showing her prejudice +1 sucks point Interesting that Umbridge at least attempted to be fake nice with the other professors but not with Hagrid  It doesn't seem right that Umbridge can demand to know why and where Hagrid was on leave  Love Hagrid but he is so bad at lying  Hagrid loves yapping too much to sense Umbridge's bad vibes  Umbridge hates Fang which is a red flag  Hermione tries to convince Hagrid to change his lesson plans but he does not seemed worried  Shay wishes the story would divulge more about how the wizards oppressed other magical beings and caused a lot of issues that are touched on but never really solved  Lots of exposition in this chapter but more exciting chapters are coming! Potter Revisited Episode #117 George with a Knife AKA Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 19 "The Lion and the Serpent" We hate Umbridge so so much Harry is feeling so good about the work he is doing in the DA Hermione creates a way for Harry to relay DA meeting dates secretly which is really cool It seems wrong that Hogwarts doesn't encourage students to be friends with others outside their house Confirmation that Hermione was almost put in Ravenclaw  Would Ravenclaw been a better fit for Hermione, especially at the beginning of the series? Hermione using the Death Eater dark marks for inspiration shows how lucky we are that she is on the good side Minerva's dedication to ensuring the Gryffindor Quidditch team wins is admirable  Snape is not putting a stop to the Slytherin's cursing members of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, +1 Sucks Point  Harry is used to the ridicule and attacks from the Slytherin's before a Quidditch match but poor Ron is not handling it well  Ron needs to remember he has punched Malfoy before and he can do it again  Luna's Gryffindor Hat is so cool! Luna is obviously very creative and very talented with magic  Tori recalls her fangirl moment when Hermione kisses Ron for good luck  Malfoy has made badges for the Slytherin's to wear - very foreboding  Who is making all these badges for Draco? Tori hates the badges, Malfoy and the fact he is a nepo baby Crabbe and Goyle have made the Slytherin team as beaters, goon Quidditch at its finest  We have missed Lee Jordan's commentary Tori struggles reading the Quidditch game, and feels so bad for Ron  Draco appears to have written and taught all the Slytherin's a terrible song about Ron to sing during the game  What song makes you want to die of embarrassment more, Ginny's singing Valentine to Harry or the Weasley is our King song? Imagine if Draco applied himself to other tasks instead of harassing Harry and Ron  Ron is not able to play well understandably, but Harry catches the snitch and is able to win the game for Gryffindor  Draco cannot let this go and continues to say disgusting things about the Weasley's to Harry and the team  George and Harry basically jump Malfoy, and it is deserved  Shay thinks they should of waited to jump Malfoy when their were no witnesses  Draco has gotten away with far too much, what he is saying is vile  Tori goes back to all the times Malfoy was hit in the series and a new counter has been made! Talk Shit Get Hit will count all the times Draco gets hit (which he deserves) Is Hogwarts (and Dumbledore) partly responsible for why Draco is the way he is?  Is Draco more emboldened in OOTP due to Lucius being in both Fudge's inner circle and Voldemort's? Was Draco surprised to be attacked? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes? George with a Knife is the new Harry with a Gun  Would you trust the Weasley twins with a spoon? McGonagall is not happy with Harry and George and plans to punish them but Umbridge arrives to make this worse Umbridge is SO petty  Umbridge confirms that she tried to stop the Gryffindor team from reforming because she has a vendetta against a fifteen year old  Umbridge gives Harry, Fred and George a lifetime ban from Quidditch unjustly, and Fred wasn't even involved in the fight  Tori hates Umbridge, and gives her +3 sucks points for being petty, being bias, being power-hungry and for being a huge bitch  How does a lifelong ban even work? It seems wrong for Umbridge to confiscate Harry and the Twins brooms since they are their property that they paid for  Harry needs a lawyer Umbridge gets another sucks point for the unfair Quidditch ban +1  Ron hasn't been seen since the game and comes back so sad and wanting to resign Harry has also had a terrible day and refuses to let Ron resign  What would Oliver Wood have to say about Harry's lifelong Quidditch Ban? Potter Revisited Episode #112 Parentified Children and Emotionally Stunted Adults AKA Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 14 "Percy and Padfoot" Everyone needs therapy in this series  Harry and Cho finally are able to have a moment  Harry's conversation with Cho is so important for his survivor's guilt  Filch trying to read Harry's mail is shady and we know Umbridge is behind it  Tori and Shay debate who Cho had feelings for first - Harry or Cedric Sirius has been outed as being in London - he really has no regard for his safety and how much Harry worries about it It would of been nice if Fred and George could of been more encouraging to Ron at his first Quidditch practice, knowing how insecure he is  Draco and co have nothing better to do with their time so they crash the Gryffindor practice  Percy's owl shows up in the Gryffindor common room - a bad omen?  Percy's letter to Ron... is not great It's nice that Percy wants to congratuate Ron on being Prefect, but then doubling down on cutting out Harry...  Was Percy persuaded to write this letter, as he urges Ron to confide in Umbridge about Harry Percy glosses over the estrangement with his family in this letter quite a bit  It's got to be so hard for Harry to see this as Percy was someone he was close to for four years prior to this  Shay thinks as a Slytherin, Ron should of pretended to cut Harry off and speak with Umbridge to find out what she was up to  Sirius randomly pops up in the Gryffindor common room fire - despite the Ministry knowing he is in London Sirius gives the trio the lowdown on Umbridge - and how racist she is  Fudge thinks that Dumbledore is training students for combat against the Ministry - is this dumb?  Sirius has no regard for his safety or how much Harry and co worry about him - planning to turn up in Hogsmede?? Sirius saying that Harry isn't like his father feels like such a low blow and immature for Sirius  Does Sirius have an idealized version of James he remembers? Potter Revisited Episode #111 Needlework AKA Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 13 "Detention with Dolores" Poor Harry, he has no safe space at the moment  The propaganda machine is awful  Hermione is right, how could Dumbledore let this happen?  The concept of the Ministry restricting students performing magic that they need to practically demonstrate for their OWLs is so dumb  Fred and George have gone ahead testing their products on students, and Ron is but in a difficult position as prefect  Hermione threatening the twins with their biggest weakness: telling their mother  Hermione leaves out handknit hats for the House Elves, putting trash on top in the hopes to free time - we get her intent but it isn't very ethical to trick them  Could House Elves even be freed this way?  This doesn't mean Ron should make fun of her knitting attempts! It's a process! The professors pushing how important their OWL exams are feels familiar to how High School teachers spoke about how serious University and College would be  Minne G gives the students a very nice pep talk, where they could all get an O in Transfiguration if they work hard and have confidence in themselves - even Neville!  Shay thinks they are exaggerating how much homework they have  Grubbly-Plank is such a great teacher... sorry Hagrid  Shay does not understand how the points system works at Hogwarts  Harry needs to stop annoying Grubbly-Plank about Hagrid  Luna lets Harry know he has her support, and Hermione picks a fight with her  Why does Luna rub Hermione the wrong way?  Angelina is channeling Oliver's intensity about Quidditch, we love that for her  Angelina does not care Harry is being gaslight about Umbridge, she has the team to think about! Harry's detention with Umbridge is... a lot  Psychological and physical torture to a minor in your care? Jail!!!!  Harry does not have parents or an adequate guardian who can advocate for him, which Umbridge knows and takes advantage of If this happened to one of the Weasley kids, Molly would be walking up to the school to commit a crime  Ron has made the Gryffindor Quidditch team! And that point was when I discovered that the person I thought was my grandfather could not biologically be my grandfather, since my father was born at least a year and a half after his death.BEN: The evidence strongly suggests your biological grandfather was actually B.H. Drake, a prominent, wealthy merchant in Winston County. That's right. Why do you think the Drake family and the community worked so hard to erase Anna, your grandmother, and her son, your father, from the official record after B.H. married Anna?STEVE: This is all speculation, but I think there were probably two reasons. The first was simply a matter of embarrassment. Here was a man who was a representative of the local Baptist church at the State Baptist Convention. He gave the land on which the local Baptist church was built. His family was very deeply involved in the Baptist Church, and I think the evidence is that he probably began his affair with my grandmother before he was actually divorced from his first wife. So I think there was a real embarrassment about that in a small-town community.The second is, of course, that he died, and as a wealthy man. By law, she should have been one of the heirs of his estate, because at the time of his death, all evidence points to the fact that they were still married—although they may have, by that time, returned to his first wife's estate. So I think that there was this financial interest, that they would want to keep it quiet.I don't think there was a great deal of complicity on the part of the broader community, but it was just something that happened. And in the community, I think like most small towns, these things did happen and most small towns knew about it, but simply let it play out on its own terms.BEN: You devote part of the book to your great-great-grandfather, James Monroe Blackwell, who was a “scalawag,” or Southerner loyal to the Union. You mentioned that he was threatened with hanging for supporting Lincoln. He named his son after President Lincoln, and this is during the time of the Civil War. Why does his story resonate so much with you?STEVE: When I was in high school in Florence, Alabama, on the Tennessee River, I was a member of the student council, got elected, and I was asked at various times to give speeches at assemblies of the school. One of the speeches I gave was during 1964 or ‘65, and it was essentially an attack on the Klan—the Ku Klux Klan.I don't remember the entire speech, but I do remember saying that the Klan had to understand that Halloween came only once a year, and even then, when you wore a mask, you were not allowed to harm people anonymously. And that the Klan was a group who masqueraded without any courage of showing themselves to the public.I also remember that my teachers on that day kept me late at school. For some reason I did not understand until later in life, one of them drove me home that day rather than letting me walk by myself.So I came to those views for a variety of reasons. But when I discovered that I had an ancestor who not only supported the Union during the war over slavery, but who also supported the reconstruction of the South on the terms that the Congress established in the aftermath of the Civil War... I realized that I wasn't the first in my family to believe in the kind of equal treatment under the law that I was espousing as a high school student.And later, going on to work with the American Civil Liberties Union affiliate in Alabama—where we did more litigation relating to equal treatment under the law as we did the First Amendment—it was a moment in which I realized that whatever bloodlines do in this world for families, I wasn't the first. And Lord have mercy, I hope I'm not the last.BEN: When you were young, did you hear stories about James Monroe Blackwell, or did you only discover this history later?STEVE: I discovered this history later. No one talked about it. My great uncle—my grandmother's brother—Uncle Wesley, used to talk about why we were Republicans in the family, but he never talked about James Monroe Blackwell. No one did. Not even my grandmother, who I think probably had mixed up fact and fiction so much by the time she told me the story about our family history that she might have put him on the wrong side of the Civil War, after all.BEN: At the end of the book, you write about the idea of reclaiming history—both with Blackwell and with your grandmother and the Drake family, your great-grandmother, and the decisions that she made to protect her family. Can you talk about that motivation of reclaiming history and what that means to you?STEVE: Yeah. I think we all are trying to find our place in the world, but the Faulkner concept that the past is not really the past essentially means that, in finding our place in the world, we also have to know who we were in our past, where our family fit in, where we came from. It's a very Southern notion, but I think it's a universal one as well.Reclaiming the history, I think, means that we're trying to understand where we came from and, by that measure, where we're going in our lives. One of the things the book jacket says is that this is a story that no family wanted to remember, and a family too proud of its history would always want to forget.And I think for me, reclaiming history is a matter of not trying to reconstruct it or trying to hide it. It's trying to simply say: this is where my family has been, this is who we have been. And it doesn't predict who I'm going to be and what I'm going to be, but it gives me a way in which to frame who I am and how I'm gonna go forward.And for those who read the book, you won't be surprised to realize that I have tried very hard in my life to not be the person my father was. I've made a very deliberate and very conscientious effort. Whether I've succeeded or not, only my sons and descendants will be able to say, but that's part of reclaiming your history. Look at the word: his-story. That's what history is. And part of that history is you at that moment, and you can either continue that history or you can break with it.BEN: But I'll note... how much do you think people are shaped by their environment, by their family history? And I ask because I think you're an example of someone who grew up in a conservative political environment. Like you said, one of the teachers had to drive you home after giving your Ku Klux Klan Halloween speech. Personally, as you write about in the introduction, your father was at best difficult—I think accurately described as abusive. And yet you... I don't know if “rejected” is the right word, but you are a different person than those two different environments would most likely produce.STEVE: I think the key to the pursuit of happiness—as our Declaration of Independence says—in my judgment, is enabled only by having an intentional life. A life in which you say: Why am I here? What do I want to achieve? What do I want to oppose? What do I want to support? Simply have a sense of intent about how you frame your life.Now, obviously, everybody knows that we have to earn a living. Sometimes the jobs we get aren't always the jobs we may have wanted earlier in life. It may be difficult, may have other problems. But generally, it is one where you have to simply live an intentional life, trying to have goals—whether the goals drive out of your reading of the Bible, or whether they're from great philosophers, or simply out of the sense of what you think is right and wrong.And I think the discussion about nurture and nature is one that will continue to be unresolved. In that competition between which is more important, your lineage or your environment, there is, I think, something which some religious teachings call free will. Perhaps it's not as free as some might think, but you have choices to make.When I was reading the first Harry Potter books with my family—the boys were small and they were devouring those books—I was reading along. And the school superintendent, Dumbledore, makes a statement to Harry Potter in which he says, essentially: “Harry, we are the choices we make.” And at that point I said out loud, “Yeah!” And of course, the boys thought I was talking about who had won the Quidditch match in the book.But therein lies, I think, my sense of what it's all about. You make choices. And while those choices may inhibit others and they may open up others, you are those choices, and you need to make them with an intent of what you want your life to be. So that's my view.BEN: What was the process of writing this book like?STEVE: I did most of the research before I even began putting anything down on paper. That's not usually the way I write books. I usually have a lot of research already done, but you still have to go back in and answer questions as the writing process occurs. In this case, all of the research was virtually done before I started writing. So it really was a more reflective process than a fact-finding process for me.I have a friend, Jack Drake, who's a great civil rights lawyer and now retired, who has a memoir coming out that's gonna be a very important one about somebody who grew up as a white Southern boy dealing with the issues of race in the Deep South. Jack says he thinks the best way to figure something out is to write about it. And there's a lot of truth in that, if you're writing honestly.And I think in this case, the writing process finally brought home both the sense of villainy that's in the story I tell, and also some sense of pride in the honesty and the good character of people who are also members of my family, whose surname I carry and whose progeny I am.BEN: So the book comes out today. Where can people buy it and where can people find more information about you?STEVE: The book is available at any of the major online booksellers. You can go to Bookshop, which is an online store for independent bookstores, but Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million, or whatever online bookseller is out there.It hopefully is at a price that you can afford. It's a book that I think everyone, hopefully, will be able to read and prompt their own interest in their own family history.BEN: And if people want to keep up with you and learn more about you, where can they find you?STEVE: I now have a website and it is aptly called SteveSuitts.com. Quidditch symbolizes the good of the castle and the things that Harry is fighting for. It is his safe ground at Hogwarts and the thing he can always rely on. When his Firebolt spins out of the sidecar during his escape from 4 Privet Drive in the Deathly Hallows, it marks the end of his childhood and beginning of his true fight.·      17:58 There's a troll in the dungeons! With this sequence we see the bond of the trio. Harry and Ron save Hermione from the troll, and Hermione takes the blame from the professors. We also see the lengths Voldemort's followers are willing to go to defend him which sets up the following he will later gain.·      25:23 The Midnight Duel and the first quidditch match. These two things are related because they set up Snape. We think he's no good from the beginning, and seeing Fluffy for the first time and then seeing Snape curse Harry's broom is pretty damning evidence.·      28:30 Christmas. This will finish out the episode. Harry and Ron have their first Christmas together and Harry gets the invisibility cloak which he will use for many years to come.
