Chapter Six - Gilderoy Lockhart“You'd better open it, Ron,“ said Neville, in a timid whisper. “It'll be worse if you don't. My gran sent me one once, and I ignored it and —” he gulped, “it was horrible.”Q1 - What do you think Gran's howler was about? And do you like the idea of howlers? At least the Howler had done one thing: Hermione seemed to think they had now been punished enough and was being perfectly friendly again.Q2 - Thoughts on Lockhart?I mean, a few people have heard of you, haven't they? All that business with He Who Must Not Be Named!” He glanced at the lightning scar on Harry's forehead. “I know, I know, it's not quite as good as winning Witch Weekly's Most Charming Smile Award five times in a row, as I have — but it's a start, Harry, it's a start.”Q3 - In their first Herbology lesson, Hermione won twenty points in twenty seconds by answering two question correctly, yet Ron and Harry won a collective 5 points for defeating a fully grown mountain troll?“My name was down for Eton, you know, I can't tell you how glad I am I came here instead. Of course mother was slightly disappointed, but since I made her read Lockhart's books I think she's begun to see how useful it'll be to have a fully trained wizard in the family…”Q4 - What do you think happens to the animals the students transfigure into objects?Q5 - Thoughts on Colin Creevey?Q6 - Do you think Harry should sell signed pictures and give the money to the Wealey family?I clearly state in chapter twelve that my ideal birthday gift would be harmony between all magic and non-magic peoples — though I wouldn't say no to a large bottle of Ogden's Old Firewhisky.”Q7 - Do you think Lockhart is a good wizard?Chapter 7 - Mudbloods and MurmursQ1 - Do we like captain Oliver Wood, or is he a bit much?Q2 - How much of Quidditch do you think is skill vs. the equipment you buy?“At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in,” said Hermione sharply. “They got in on pure talent.” The smug look on Malfoy's face flickered. “No one asked your opinion, you filthy little Mudblood,” he spat.Q3 - Should it be legal for a father to buy an entire team racing brooms?“If one word of it was true, I'll eat my kettle.”Q4 - Do you think anything Lockhart says is true?Q5 - Why do you think Dumbledore hired Lockhart?Mudbloods is a really foul name for someone who was Muggle-born — you know, non-magic parents. There are some wizards — like Malfoy's family — who think they're better than everyone else because they're what people call pure-blood.”Q6 - Do you have any theories on how Hagrid got expelled?Q7 - At the end of the chapter what do you think the voice was/came from?Q8 - What is the best/worst reason you ever got detention?Chapter 8 - The Deathday PartyGinny Weasley, who had been looking peaky, was bullied into taking some by Percy.“You'd think that getting hit forty-five times in the neck with a blunt axe would qualify you to join the headless hunt.”Q1 - What do you think Nick did to warrant getting hit 45 times with an axe in the neck?Q2 - Do you think there should be some regulation against turning your wife into a Yak with kwikspell?“That vanishing cabinet was extremely valuable!” he was saying gleefully to Mrs Norris. “We'll have Peeves out this time, my sweet.”Q3 - What do you think a vanishing cabinet is? Q4 - Have you ever felt like you walked through a ghost?Q5 - Would you rather go to a deathday party or a halloween feast? And then Harry heard it. “...rip…tear…kill…” It was the same voice, the same cold, murderous voice he had heard in Lockhart's office.Q6 - What do you think this voice is?Q7 - What do you think “Enemies of the Heir, Beware” means?Chapter 9 - The Writing on the Wall“You,” he screeched, “You! You've murdered my cat! You've killed her! I'll kill you! I'll —” Q1 - Is murdering someone for murdering you pet an appropriate response?“If I might speak, Headmaster,” said Snape from the shadows, and Harry's sense of foreboding increased; he was sure nothing Snape was going to say was going to do him any good. “Potter and his friends may have simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.Q2 - Why did Snape defend the trio?“We weren't hungry,” said Ron loudly, as his stomach gave a huge rumble.Q3 - Why doesn't Harry just tell the truth of what he heard?“I personally feel he should be taken off Gryffindor Quidditch team until he is ready to be honest.” “Really, Severus,” said Professor McGonagall sharply. Q4 - Is Ron showing bias when he is offended at mudblood, but sniggers at Squib?Q5 - The clock chimed midnight after the meeting with Dumbledore…was the feast going till 11:30?When Flich wasn't guarding the scene of the crime, he was skulking red-eyed through the corridors, lunging out at unsuspecting students and trying to put them in detention for things like ‘breathing loudly' and ‘looking happy.'”Q6 - Do you think the chamber exists? Where do you think it is? And what do you think the monster is?Q7 - How cruel are Fred and George for turning baby Ron's Teddy bear into a spider?Q8 - Thoughts on Moaning Myrtle?Q9 - How does Myrtle, who is a ghost, splash water all over the bathroom?Ghosts can pass through solid objects without causing damage to themselves or the material, but create disturbances in water, fire and air. The temperature drops in the immediate vicinity of a ghost, an effect intensified if many congregate in the same place. Their appearance can also turn flames blue. Should part or all of a ghost pass through a living creature, the latter will experience a freezing sensation as though they have been plunged into ice-cold water.Q10 - Who would you transform into if you had a little bit of polyjuice potion?“Oh, come on, no teachers going to fall for that,” said Ron. “They'd have to be really thick…”Chapter Ten - The Rogue Bludger“Homework: compose a poem about my defeat of the Wagga Wagga werewolf! Signed copies of Magical Me to the author of the best one!”Q1 - Lockharts signature is loopy, do you think a person's signature tells a lot about them?“I'm drinking nothing with Crabbe's toenails in it…”“I never thought I'd see the day when you'd be persuading us to break rules,” said Ron, “All right, we'll do it. But not toenails, OK?”“It'll be down to you, Harry, to show them that a Seeker has to have something more than a rich father. Get to that Snitch before Malfoy or die trying, Harry, because we've got to win today, we've got to.” “So no pressure, Harry,” said Fred, winking at him.Q2 - How incompetent is Madam Hooch? (maybe a leading question…)Q3 - Should this Quidditch match have been called off?Q4 - Have you ever broken a bone?“This, sir?” said dobby, plucking at the pillowcase. “Tis a mark of the house-elf's enslavement, sir. Dobby can only be freed if his masters present him with clothes, sir. The family is careful not to pass Dobby even a sock, sir. For then he would be free to leave their house for ever.”“If he knew what he means to us, to the lowly, the enslaved, us dregs of the magical world! Dobby remembers how it was when He Who Must Not Be Named was at the height of his power, sir! We house-elves were treated like vermin, sir…Of course Dobby is still treated like that, sir. But Mostly life has improved for my kind since you triumphed over He Who Must Not Be Named. Harry Potter survived, and the Dark Lord's power was broken, and it was a new dawn, sir, and Harry Potter shone like a beacon of hope for those of us who thought the dark days would never end, sir.”Q5 - What is Dobby's deal?“If Albus hadn't been on the way downstairs for hot chocolate, who knows what might have…”Q6 - You think Dumbledore was really getting hot chocolate?“The question is not who,” said Dumbledore, his eyes on Colin. “The question is, how…”Q7 - What does he mean?

Potter Revisited Episode #25 Slytherins In Lamborghinis AKA Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Chapter 7 "Mudbloods and Murmurs" Harry spends his time avoiding Lockhart and Colin, which we get Ron's wand injuries Professor Flitwick but yet, the school does nothing depite it being dangerous It's a miracle Ron didn't have to do exams with his broken wand Oliver was organized enough to book the Quidditch pitch for practice, but didn't tell the team beforehand? How did he get the girls up for practice? Colin has some crazy Harry Senses Colin shows Harry the photo of him and Lockhart, and Harry is trying to escape from view - very similar to how Harry was feeling when the photo was taken How exactly do photos and portraits work in the Wizarding World? How can portraits move between frames - even ones that aren't their own? Should the school do more to teach Muggleborns about Quidditch? Wood had them practice without eating breakfast - not very smart, Oliver! Interesting the Slytherin Team is all boys, when Muggle Quidditch has a Co-Ed rule for Gender Equality Shay discusses the Gryffindor and Slytherin play styles and how they choose their team members to fit their needs +1 Snape Sucks point for overruling Oliver's booked pitch despite him going through the proper channels Malfoy is on the Quidditch team and Lucius bought the whole team state of the art brooms - how is this allowed? Malfoy is known to be a very good flier - so why did he resort to buying his way onto the team? The Gryffindor team has no idea what to say to Malfoy - but Hermione comes right in for his insecurities like a badass Ron's first instinct is to curse Malfoy on Hermione's behalf - what a stand up guy Fred and George almost seem to get violent with Malfoy while Ron resorts to magic confrontation - is Quidditch the Twins way of releasing anger? Why can't Colin read the room and see that Ron is ill? Shay feels like Colin has Only Child Syndrome - we wonder if Dennis was a last minute addition to the series Hermione is affronted that Hagrid talks down about Lockhart, which is interesting for Hagrid since he always respects the Hogwarts Profs This book really shows the importance Hermione has to the trio + Hagrid. Hagrid refers to her as "Our Hermione" and Ron sticks up for her compared to the last novel Is Hagrid right that no one else applied for DADA or is that just what Dumbledore wants everyone to think? We love Ron being the one to give the Wizarding Society context rather than Hermione in the movies. It makes so much more sense! Hagrid is growing suspiciously big pumpkins and Harry thinks his old wand is hidden in his umbrella. If so - did Dumbledore help Hagrid with this? We get some foreshadowing to Hagrid being expelled Shay wonders if Hermione fears expulsion because she sees what Hagrid's life is like Shay discusses what she think Hermione would do if she was expelled Hermione obviously disapproves of Hagrid using magic on the pumpkins but is also impressed - we see this a lot with Hermione and the Twins later on in the series Harry and Ron receive their detentions - who approved Harry's detention? We finally hear "the voice" and Ron is Harry's go to person on weird magical things - as it should be! Interesting foreshadowing with Ron throwing up slugs on Tom Riddle's Services to the School award Email any thoughts, questions or feedback to potterrevisitedpodcast@gmail.com Music: Shelter Song by Alexander Nakarada (www.serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Follow Us: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/potterrevisited Twitter https://twitter.com/potterevisited Instagram https://www.instagram.com/potterrevisited_/ Youtube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4v2Xt0OIQ8_LCVYhKf2S5A TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@potterrevisited

This week on the Binge, we covered Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' 7th chapter: Mudbloods and Murmurs. In this chapter we get hints of obsession, stalking, some bribery, a heavy dose of blood status racism and perhaps a hint of budding courtship. It's a heavy-themed chapter for a kids book. We lighten (Lumos) the mood with a quidditch chat. We do some Divination foreshadowing, give/take House Points, and callout the parts of the chapter that are utterly Riddikulus! Harry Potter has a stalker and a fan club. 5 Galleons per picture might be best, just don't tell Ron that. He's going to spend this chapter mostly throwing up and complaining. Thanks for joining us for this chapter of The Chamber of Secrets. Nearly half way there and moving along. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the bloodlines of the wizarding world. More specifically- we're going to be honing in on and discussing Muggleborns- also known as ‘Mudbloods' to the darker, more sinister side of the wizarding world. Now before we dive too far in to this topic, let me first establish that blood status is one of the most controversial aspects of the wizarding world- a concept in which wizarding families can be distinguished by the level of magically-endowed family members. Generally speaking, people are slotted in to one of the following categories: Pure-blood, half-blood, or muggle- with the special term ‘muggle-born' referring to a witch or wizard with two non-magical parents. The existence of such a system, however, brings nothing to the wizarding world but hatred. In fact, one of the main focuses of Voldemort's regime was establishing power over the worlds of half-bloods and muggles. Voldemort felt that those with pure-blood lines deserved to be in power, and he also grew increasingly concerned that pure-blood numbers would dwindle while the number of muggleborns climbed- effectively extinguishing ‘pure' blood from the wizarding world. And, as it turns out, Voldemort was very right to have that ‘fear'- as statistics show that the number of muggle-borns climbs year over year. With that said- let me get to the ‘meat' of today's video, which is a list of ALL KNOWN muggle-borns (that is, witches or wizards born to muggle parents) that we know of in the wizarding world. I'm going to start with the more obvious ones and make my way toward the LESS obvious ones that you may not know about. How many do YOU know of? Comment down below before we get started.

We continue on our journey in this new franchise with the second movie, which I'm told is arguably the worst. The episode plays out much like the first one with me asking questions to the one with the knowledge of the franchise. We do take a slight detour for awhile and have a conversation about Game of Thrones.

This week, Allie, Adam, and Arri all talk about Chapter 7, Mudbloods and Murmurs. In it, you'll find a discussion of racial (?) slurs in the wizarding world, where exactly all the slugs go that Ron throws up, and the volume one expects a massive snake traveling in pipes to make as it makes it's way around an old castle. "It's about the most insulting thing he could think of," gasped Ron, coming back up. "Mudblood's a really foul name for someone who is Muggle-born--you know, non-magic parents. There are some wizards--like Malfoy's family--who think they're better than everyone else because they're what people call pure-blood."
Turn to Page 104, Mudbloods and Murmurs. Today’s lesson is called What Lies Beneath. The chapter begins with Harry sleeping after a long week. His sleep is cut short by Oliver Wood, who springs a surprise first Quidditch practice on the Gryffindor team. Colin Creevey follows Harry down to the pitch, pestering him with questions. As the team begins to fly, they are interrupted by the Slytherins, who claim special access in order to train their new seeker, Draco Malfoy. Hermione insults Draco by pointing out he is probably only on the team because his father bought them each new broomsticks, and Draco retorts by calling Hermione a mudblood. In the ensuing chaos, Ron tries to curse Draco, but his broken wand causes the spell to backfire, and he begins spitting up slugs. The trio go to Hagrid’s house, where he comforts Ron, and fills in Harry about his interactions with Lockhart and Ginny. When they return to the castle, they find McGonagall waiting for them with detention schedules. Harry goes to assist Lockhart in answering fan mail. As the evening grows late, Harry hears a startling and terrifying voice. He recounts the experience to Ron, including the fact that Lockhart seemed not to be able to hear it. Chapter 7: Mudbloods and Murmurs- Early morning quidditch practice is the WORST... especially when it's interrupted by rascist Slytherins. Ron does a lecture while burping slugs and Hagrid's got jokes and rocks and Adam's got points to give to EVERYONE! Oh, and Lockhart continues to be the most annoying ever...

Considering Hurricane DORKian (eyeroll) kept them inside for awhile, your hosts are tackling four chapters this week- At Flourish and Blotts, The Whomping Willow, Gilderoy Lockhart, and Mudbloods and Murmurs. In the Harry Potter series JK Rawling does a great job helping us see and feel what it is like to experience prejudice and rejection. We meet Lucious Malfoy, the poster child for what the bible calls “the wicked.” But the goal is not to despise fictitious characters like Lucius Malfoy, the goal is to be able to see the Lucius Malfoy in us. Today we compare the way of the world to the beautiful, life giving way of Jesus, and what it is like to be part of the fellowship of the King.

We're already on the 7th chapter of our second Harry Potter book and we can't wait to talk about.... The Avengers? We may have made it through "Mudbloods and Murmurs" from the Chamber of Secrets but at this point we hadn't yet made it through 'Avengers: Endgame' so while we do go in depth about the chapter, Myke also can't help but be distracted. Don't worry, we still talk about why Lockheart, who is an imposter, doesn't have imposter syndrome, how Hagrid is like Shrek, and fake racism in a world full of real racism! If there's anything coming up in this book that you want us to talk about on air, email us your questions - either written or recorded - to magiclessmyke@gmail.com, or tweet us @magiclessmyke and follow us on Insta @magiclessmyke!
Zoe reads Mudbloods and Murmurs and Robin reads the Thief. In these chapters: we rank Harry's homes, Gilderoy Lockhart is Bear Grylls with a hair dryer, Colin Creevey is the OG stan, and Dumbledore is, as usual, playing the long game.

In this episode, we (and Ron) get to learn a little bit about the title of this book aka The Chamber of Secrets. But before that, a whole bunch of stuff happens:- Harry and Ron get assigned detentions. McGonagall smartly tailors the detentions - Harry gets assigned time with his favoritest Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor and Ron has to clean the trophy room, in the Muggle way, with Filch. Talk about fun. During his detention, Harry hears a disembodied voice but can't be sure where it was coming from or who it could be.- Harry almost gets another detention from Filch for dripping mud in the corridor but is saved by Nearly Headless Nick. Nick also invites him to his 500th Deathday Party on Halloween; Harry agrees to attend, with Hermione and Ron, out of sheer gratitude.- As per Ron's prediction, the Deathday party turns out to be dead depressing so they split midway to go back to the feast. Harry hears the disembodied voice again in the corridor (Ron and Hermione can't), except this time it's saying a lot of scary stuff like 'Rip. Tear. Kill.' and 'I smell blood'. Harry runs towards the voice, a confused Ron and Hermione in tow, and end up in front of some writing on a wall ('The Chamber of Secrets is open. Enemies of the heir, beware') and a petrified cat - Mrs. Norris. The entire school shows up just after they do and catches them at the scene of the crime.- Filch accuses Harry of killing his cat because Harry figured out he's a Squib. But thankfully, Dumbledore believes that Harry had nothing to do with the incident and gets him off the hook. Hermione remembers reading about the Chamber of Secrets but she doesn't have her copy of Hogwarts, A History to refresh her memory and all the copies have been borrowed from the library. So, she interrupts Professor Binns during a History of Magic lecture and asks him. That's how Ron learns about the Chamber of Secrets.HARRY POTTER STORIESIn this episode, this segment features Pavithra Muthalagan, a friend and listener of the podcast. If you are interested in sharing your story with us, just record yourself telling the story of how you starting reading the books and send it to mimblewimblepodcast@gmail.com.PREPARATIONYou can prepare for this episode by readingChapter 7: Mudbloods and Murmurs (from when Ron started throwing up slugs)Chapter 8: The Deathday PartyChapter 9: The Writing on the Wallof Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsYou can also listen to this podcast on iTunes, Google Podcast, or any other favorite podcast app. Just search for Mimblewimble - The Harry Potter Podcast.NOTESThe wikipedia entry for a Kelpie. "Eat slugs, Malfoy!" In episode 3 of season 2, we discuss the events leading up to Ron coming to Hermione's defense. From what? Let's find out. After they find out that they cannot get past the barrier in platform 9 3/4, Ron and Harry put their heads together to come up with a misguided and dangerous plan. They decide to ride the flying car to Hogwarts. What could go wrong, right? Turns out, everything.Well, the car is seen by some mugglesThe car loses juice and starts to protest against the long drive. They hit a tree in the Hogwarts ground. The only tree that hits backRon breaks his wand. The car throws Harry and Ron out and drives itself into the forbidden forest. Finally, they get caught by Snape who is hell-bent on getting them expelled.Dumbledore arrives to save the day and lets them off with a detention. But their bad luck does not stop there. Ron gets a howler from Mrs. Weasley and Harry gets a lecture from Professor Lockhart. Harry, to his annoyance, gets a 'FAN' (not Ginny), who follows him around taking pictures and attracting more attention. You'd think things would get better for Harry at the Quidditch practice. But the Gryffindor team's practice is interrupted by the Slytherin team. They show off their brand new Nimbus 2001s, generously donated to them by Mr. Malfoy to get his son on the team. When Hermione points out that nobody in the Gryffindor team bought their way in, Draco Malfoy calls her a nasty word. That's when Ron goes to Hermione's defense.HARRY POTTER STORIESIn this episode, this segment features Shruthi Venkatesh, a friend and listener of the podcast. If you are interested in sharing your story with us, just record yourself telling the story of how you starting reading the books and send it to mimblewimblepodcast@gmail.com.PREPARATIONYou can prepare for this episode by readingChapter 5: The Whomping WillowChapter 6: Gilderoy LockhartChapter 7: Mudbloods and Murmursof Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsYou can also listen to this podcast on iTunes, Google Podcast, or any other favorite podcast app. Just search for Mimblewimble - The Harry Potter Podcast.NOTESThe very cute illustration of Snape’s first appearance in the Chamber of secrets.
It’s really hard not to draw comparisons between Draco Malfoy’s utterance of the word “mudblood” and the racial politics of the United States. This week Justin and Doug discuss what fictitious pop culture religion they would found. Justin thinks a Beatles religion would be pretty swell and Doug is curious about the religion of the Jedi. The dorks talk about how Porn Hub is looking to add a sex ed section to their website. Doug schools Justin on the difference between the golden and platinum rules in terms of empathy. Doug gives Justin all of the details on the quidditch documentary Mudbloods and the two talk about whether or not they would play. A discussion is had about the light, dark, and gray side of the force in Star Wars. Things are wrapped up with a throw-down with a light side Jedi vs. a dark side Jedi. Doug recommends the UK pop-punk band Neck Deep. Their album Life’s Not Out to Get You is great. Check out their single “Gold Steps.” Justin recommends Sherlock, which is on Netflix now!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 291 This episode we bring you more of our coverage of IF Film Fest, featuring interviews with directors Farzad Sangari (Mudbloods), Collin Schiffli (Animals) and Tyler Measom (An Honest Liar). Plus bonus segments featuring David Dastmalchian and James “The Amazing” Randi! And while we discuss the ins and outs of the indie film scene, we also mention… Middlebury, deception, good characters, overcoming addiction, Emma Watson, a love story, being deceived, investigating the paranormal, UCLA, feel as real as possible, fly on the wall filmmaking, three act structures, questioning the viewers, maintaining and making media… for an audience, fighting traffic, tape to tape, when you question what others hold dear, pulling the curtain back, Kings of Pastry, inspired by true events, film school, escaping from a straightjacket over Niagara Falls, , watching the film with a group of people, Kim Shaw, distribution systems, Chicago, identity theft, they did this thing that should be impossible, drawing movies, detractors and it’s all just content. “…the format and medium of documentaries nowadays, is so fantastic. Because it isn’t beholden to this three act structure, that narratives are… it isn’t boy meets girl. Anything can happen… and anything does happen. So what we are seeing in documentaries is this real revolution of storytelling, that just does, in a way – whatever the hell it wants to do.” For more on IF Film Fest, go to: http://www.louisvillefilm.org/

It's time for another Bonus Content Episode! These are episodes where we as Bucs fans get to explore other fandoms that we may have or address issues that we can't cover in the main episodes. For this Episode, Brent Allen is joined by Josh and Matt, hosts of the Tales from Godric's Hollow podcast to discuss a Netflix documentary called Mudbloods. Mudbloods follows the journey of the UCLA Quidditch team through the Quidditch World Cup... yes, I said Quidditch and yes, it's an actual sport and team. It's a cross between Rugby and Soccer with some crazy antics, like running around with a broom between their legs. The trio also discuss how to make this sport a little more legitimate. The Tales from Godric's Hollow Podcast is all about a Harry Potter Fanatic guide a pure Harry Potter virgin on his first journey through the books. Be sure to check them out on iTunes and other podcasting platforms, tweet them at @TalesfromGH or email at talesfromgodricshollow@gmail.com. They talk about Harry and Draco's prospects on their respective Quidditch teams, Wizard blood status (Pure Bloods, Mudbloods, Muggleborns and Squibs), the deal with Salazar Slytherin (and his heir), and the difference in Muggle and Wizard education. Our theme song is “This Book Is So Awesome” by Harry and The Potters.
