I was hoping I could turn this into a profile piece, but that didn't happen. So, I figured I'd drop these twenty or so minutes I spent with Alan Zweibel, a comedy writer/author/screenwriter/playwright best known for his years coming up with classic skits and bits on the early days of Saturday Night Live, co-creating It's Garry Shandling's Show and working with such comic icons as Billy Crystal and Larry David. He talks about all of that in his new book, Laugh Lines: My Life Making Funny People Funnier. I talk to him about his upcoming virtual chat for Evelyn Rubenstein JCC this Thursday, what advice he has for upcoming comedy writers (Jewish or not) and that sitcom he created for Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal.
Alan Zweibel was a writer in the early days of Saturday Night Live, It's Garry Shandling's Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm. He details a life in comedy in his new memoir, Laugh Lines: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier.

Sometimes Thanksgiving dinner can feel like you're trapped in a room, unable to escape. But at least there is turkey. With The Exterminating Angel, the upper class are physically (mentally?) unable to leave a home and quickly start going mad. They could have calmed down by listening to some Dennis Wilson but they didn't. They could have felt motivated by listening to Slade BUT THEY DIDN'T. And if they wanted to feel even weirder about their circumstances they could have watched It's Garry Shandling's Show. They had so many opportunities (including cannibalism) but they just decided to complain. Sigh. With the holidays right around the corner we've got a special treat to show how thankful we are for all of you. This week, we're bringing back Al Jean! The longtime Simpsons showrunner returns to the Max Fun studios – this time around he joins us to discuss his contributions to "It's Garry Shandling's Show." We'll get the scoop on this cult hit, which shares a lot of DNA with the Simpsons. And just like last time he'll sprinkle in some Simpsons trivia throughout our conversation.

Emmy award-winning writer Alan Zweibel started out in show business by peddling jokes to Catskills comics at seven bucks a pop, before a chance meeting with Lorne Michaels led to a staff job on the hottest new show on television, "Saturday Night Live." Alan joined Gilbert and Frank at the George Burns Room at the Friars Club to talk about the earliest days of SNL, co-creating the groundbreaking "It's Garry Shandling's Show" and collaborating with everyone from Gilda Radner to Rob Reiner to Billy Crystal. Also: Alan heckles Larry David's act, "borrows from" Paul Simon, turns down "Hollywood Squares" and inspires a classic "Seinfeld" episode. PLUS: Totie Fields! Christopher Lee! The subversiveness of "Duck Soup"! Uncle Miltie gets banned! And Gilbert tries (unsuccessfully) to follow The Beatles! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
With an epic marathon of 552 (!) episodes of "The Simpsons" launching this week (on cable channel FXX), Gilbert and Frank decided to sit down with someone who's been there from the very beginning (way back in 1988), writer, producer and former show runner, Mike Reiss. Mike joined the boys in Gilbert's Chelsea apartment to share a few "dark secrets" behind TV's longest-running prime time series, including the true story behind Itchy & Scratchy, how Groundskeeper Willie became a national hero, and why Marge's bouffant is so tall (bet you don't know the story behind that one.) Also, Mike recalls writing fake "letters to Santa" for Johnny Carson and working on one of our all-time favorite sitcoms, "It's Garry Shandling's Show." You want more?
