Three actors, one enigmatic play, and surprising insights into collaboration, craft, and curiosity What can three actors teach you about memory, silence, and creativity? In this episode of Your Creative Mind, I sit down with Jaqui Shiel, Mark Cosby, and Lori Kee, three accomplished performers who brought Harold Pinter's Old Times to life in a Zoom performance in Karen Kohlhaas' directing class that I took. You'll hear how they build layered characters, balance artistic work with everyday demands, and use pauses and presence to create powerful moments on stage and in life. Their stories offer practical strategies you can apply to your own communication, whether you're leading a team, teaching a class, or crafting your next project. If you want fresh insight into acting craft, collaboration, and the artistry of silence, this conversation will spark new ideas and confidence in your own creative journey. The actors in this project were: Jaqui Shiel as Kate, Mark Cosby as Deeley, and Lori Kee as Anna. See below for their information. If you're a producer or a casting director, book them for shows. 645. Part 2 of our interview with David Ballantyne about post Civil-War Reconstruction of the Red River Valley. He has given the history on the area in his book, Fractured Freedoms: Reconstruction in Central Louisiana. “Fractured Freedoms is a riveting history of central Louisiana from the 1860s to the 1890s, focusing on majority-Black Rapides Parish during Reconstruction. Using the region as a case study, Ballantyne reveals what is, in part, a rural Reconstruction success story, emphasizing the resilience of Black politics and the persistence of significant divisions among white residents that allowed the Republican Party to gain and maintain power there. It was only with the collapse of state-level Republican power in 1877 that Democratic forces in the parish were able to dismantle local Republican political control and gradually constrict Black freedoms" (LSU Press). She orders oysters, of course I don't know how to do this, to slip a three-pronged fork under the white flesh of some mollusk and wiggle soft globes of muscle from the black mass of shell, the lemongrass broth the dense gem swims in — how to pop it out and into my mouth and then suck, savor the dense slip of it, then again: a sequence of teasing, eating, repeating, and this is only our appetizer. I'm gulping My glass of pinot grigio, wet fingerprints along the stem because I can't pronounce the name of a single entrée, meet her eyes across a candelabra with the weight of a fresco above her head, ridiculous cherubs entreating with their fat blue eyes. Beside, the dark drapes and the billowing shapes of tablecloths curtain off any eaves this conversation could fade into, so it's spotlight perspective, precarious. She's tongue tumbling into me, an outpouring of asks until I spill sauce, a thin line of it down the buttons on my blouse — she dabs at me with her burgundy napkin, freshly dampened for the task. I shut my eyes and feel the whirl of the room, the orangey angels and her dry palms pressed against my chest, wonder if I'll open up full-mouthed and mind-tied. This week in Louisiana history. We have a surprise on this week's show! It was like old times this week with all kinds of rabbit holes and random golf discussions, plus a little arguing. We start with a discussion about club events after a big win from Jay. A discussion on amateur status happens after many former pros are getting their status back and competing at the USGA Mid-Am. Somehow a discussion on the Champions Tour popped up. We then get into some topics regarding the upcoming Ryder Cup.
Federal Reserve Chair Powell is to speak on the economic outlook at the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce. The outlook is not likely to stray far from the tone of the last policy decision. Fed Governor Miran did stray quite a distance, suggesting rates were needed to be 2 percentage points lower (coincidentally, others outside the Fed have targeted that rate level). The consistency of Miran's analysis might be challenged.

Curtis and I have been friends with the Boston-based Three at Home for many years, and shared many a show together. In this episode, we take some time to catch up with the rock/pop trio to see where they've been and what's in their future. Band members Dann Russo, Mary Casiello and Kari Paisley-Flango talk about some recent shows in Boston and the Steam Kettle Festival at Hale Reservation in Westwood. Kari joined the band in 2022, and talk about how they met with Dann and Mary and their experience being part of Three at Home. Boston has been a big part of all our lives and we take some time to go into the changes we've seen in the city, its role as a place for the arts, and the challenges and opportunities that it's created for the artistic community in recent years. Opening this episode is an excerpt from "Mama Werewolf" a Brandi Carlie cover and which the band performed at the Steam Kettle Festival, featuring Kari on lead vocals. Closing the episode is "Just Like This" an original by the band and recorded before Kari joined the band.

593. Part 1 of our conversation with Nick Douglas about the documentary he is working on about the relationship between jazz and civil rights, “I am working with my filmmaking partner Doug Harris on a documentary called The Reconnect: The Untold History of Jazz. It is a true story about the actual formation of jazz in the only place it could have formed: New Orleans. But it is more it identifies for the first time New Orleans as the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. It shows how jazz and jazz musicians used jazz and musical performances to fund and support the civil rights movement long before most people realize the movement started. It answers questions about jazz and the civil rights movement that have never been exposed. Enjoy and if you like what we are doing share the video and donate to get this project completed. "Shaft." "Taxi Driver." "Midnight Cowboy." What do all these movies have in common? The old Times Square is a central setting. Coming to town next weekend on Sunday, June 30, to the Magic Bag in Ferndale is a band that anyone who grew up in the nineties will definitely know. And if you don't, well, you should get acquainted with the alt-rock legendary sound of Letters to Cleo. The band has some new material to go with favorites like "I Want You to Want Me," "Here and Now," and "Cruel to Be Kind." To talk about the band, music, and the show, my guest is guitarist Michael Eisenstein. If it sounds like I'm a little excited, I'll put it on the table right now that I'm a fan. Michael shares stories along the band's journey — and the fresh energy they bring to their new material. We discuss how technology has changed the way they create music, contrasting the hands-on, live development of songs in the early nineties with today's digital collaboration. Michael reflects on the unique challenges and benefits of remote recording and how it has affected the band's creative process. We also get into the band's involvement with the iconic movie "Ten Things I Hate About You," sharing behind-the-scenes stories, including the thrilling experience of filming the closing shot from a helicopter. Michael talks about the gratifying experience of hearing from younger musicians who were influenced by Letters to Cleo and how the band continues to inspire the next generation of artists. Looking forward to their upcoming show at the Magic Bag, Michael shares his excitement about returning to the Midwest and performing in a venue that feels like home. He reminisces about past tours through Metro Detroit with other artists and the joy of reconnecting with old friends and fans. The intimate setting of the Magic Bag suits the band's vibe perfectly, promising a night of great music and energy. Don't miss Letters to Cleo at the Magic Bag in Ferndale on Sunday, June 30.
