Recorded live before audiences across the country, The Land and Its People captures David Sedaris at his best: His impeccable timing and disarming honesty create an immersive listening experience that can be as moving as it is funny. Andrew Sean Greer's Villa Coco, read by Edoardo Ballerini, carries listeners to Tuscany, where Ballerini's exceptional performance turns a wonderful book into an unforgettable listen. Jo and Laura close by previewing Hallie Cantor's novel, Like This, but Funnier, with Helen Laser's deft narration capturing both the wit and vulnerability of a flawed screenwriter at a professional crossroads. If you haven't seen Part 1 yet, start there first: https://youtu.be/jBuZ6d7O2esWhat happened to Christian humor? For centuries, Christians laughed, joked, mocked hypocrisy, and used satire to expose pride, corruption, and foolishness. But somewhere along the way, many believers became afraid to laugh. In Part 2 of this conversation, Dr. T. Michael W. Halcomb and Dr. Terry Lindvall explore the forgotten history of Christian humor—from medieval monks and the Feast of Fools to Martin Luther, G.K. Chesterton, and the long tradition of holy mockery. Why did Christians become so serious? Can satire be used faithfully? What's the difference between humor that heals and humor that harms? This conversation is insightful, hilarious, and surprisingly relevant for the modern church.

A heartfelt, one-of-a-kind memoir chronicling the hilarious, absurd, and thought-provoking experiences of an American pursuing comedy in China, learning first-hand how humor does and doesn't translate-and whether laughter transcends borders."I marched onstage in a long robe beside my Shifu, under the curious eyes of a thousand Chinese comedy fans, armed only with a microphone and the goal to kill onstage or die trying. Over the speakers, the host shouted: "Welcome to the stage: Master Ding Guangquan and his American disciple, Ai Jie Xi!"When self-proclaimed American class clown Jesse Appell signed up to study Mandarin in high school, he never imagined that one day his name would be written into the traditional family tree of Chinese comedy. But when he first moves to Beijing to apprentice to the legendary Master Ding, a single show is all it takes for Jesse and his fellow comedy misfits to understand that book learning means bombing jokes. To truly get the big laughs, he realizes he needs to know everything, like how long the fuse is on a thirty-cent firework, what card games coal miners play over Chinese New Year, and why comedy writers in Shanghai sometimes sleep in heart-shaped beds. The result? Asking questions that might seem simple-if they weren't being asked by an American caught in the breakneck whirlwind of a rising China.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

PRE-ORDER MY NEW BOOK (OUT MAY 5, 2026)!!! — https://bit.ly/43BquPd Gerry is back after what can only be described as the Ice Age: Wake County Edition, we compare notes on barely meeting our students, and I realize, once again, that trusting Facebook teacher groups might be a dangerous choice. We also talk about something huge in my life: my husband decided to try stand-up comedy for the very first time… during my show… with zero warning to anyone. Watching him crush five minutes on stage somehow made me more nervous than any set I've ever done myself, and Gerry's reaction alone was worth it. From there, we spiral (naturally) into comedy venues that feel like side quests, students who refuse to pay to see their professors perform, the deeply unserious idea of giving extra credit for attending comedy shows, and the absolute audacity of calling planning time a “gift.” And yes, I climb onto a hill I'm fully prepared to die on, this time involving taxes, reading levels, and why being educated shouldn't feel like a trap. Takeaways: The moment I realized my husband might secretly be good at stand-up comedy. Why teacher Facebook groups should never be treated as primary sources. The phrase administrators use that makes my eye twitch instantly. The awkward truth about students, professors, and paid entertainment. The hill I'll die on involving taxes, literacy, and common sense. -- Teachers' night out? Yes, please! Episode Intro:The topic we're exploring in this episode is climate change and humor. Can climate change be funny? To explore this question, I had the chance to speak with Sara Yeo, a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Utah, who researches science communication, along with Julia St. Andre, currently a senior studying science communication. For her honors thesis Julia researched the effects of humorous climate change communication – specifically how humor and emotions such as grief and anxiety associated with climate change motivate young adults to act.Interview Summary:This episode of Talking Climate examines how humor can be used to communicate climate change more effectively. Through clips from well-known comedians and an in-depth discussion with University of Utah Professor of Communication Sara Yeo and student Julia St. Andre, the conversation explores whether comedy can make a serious issue more engaging without undermining its importance. The guests discuss audience awareness, different types of humor, and research showing that non-aggressive, relatable humor can increase hope, reduce burnout, and motivate action—especially among younger audiences facing climate anxiety.Episode webpage:wilkescenter.utah.edu/podcast/34-climate-change-should-be-funnier

Welcome back to Bubbles' Mushrooms - a podcast for you. This week Paula Abdul finally joins us on the show, we wonder who actually likes our Facebook and Instagram posts, we take a look at our weekly podcast statistics and compare our show to Steve from Blue's Clues' new podcast, we consider making this our final episode, we challenge our viewers to a loyalty test, try out some new drops and Katie has menopause on the show. Edward and Katie went to a GVSU football game, we give Maxell a shout-out for his Chuck E Cheese birfday, Luke gives some Breaking Bad style advice, Jaclyn talks about soup and cake season and we break down the difference between Cheetos and Cheese Kurls. Anyway. Now it's game time and today we are gonna look at these great United States of America. We use some cards from an old children's game and rate each and every state in our nation! Hear about the states that don't like honkeys, the ones that do have Long John Silvers & Waffle Houses, which states have hot babes like Lea Thompson, which states will swear at you and which ones are slow at counting pennies. There's a lot of dumb states here and now you can hear about which ones are crappiest! Don't forget to email the show at bubbmush@gmail.com - Thanks for listening!

What happens in Vegas definitely gets shared on the pod.  Pottymouth reports back on the “moving dirt around” stage of the new ballpark in Las Vegas and ponders the slot machine per capita question. Kyle is nipping at Cal's heels – is there an actual home run race happening here at the stretch? We make a verbal Manny/Kiké/Manny sandwich. Josh Naylor keeps stealing bases with brains over speed. We are not impressed with Mark Teixeira's run for congress. The flipped Little League bat brings in $10K at auction and it all goes to support the local league. Samuel Basallo answers the question about how many zeros it takes to be happy. September is Suicide Prevention Month. We encourage you to support local organizations, and/or if you are able, contribute to this American Foundation for Suicide Prevention fundraiser led by a friend of the show.We say, “I remember the distaste more than the facts,” “Maybelle Blair is life goals,” and “a lot of cred in the vibe.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. The Executive Producer and Showrunner of NBC's hit sitcom Lopez vs. Lopez knew she had something special when she watched Mayan Lopez call out her famous father, George Lopez, on TikTok. That inspiration, combined with Debby's decade working in television (credits: ABC's “The Conners,”  Freevee's “Primo,” Hulu's “Love, Victor,” Netflix's “One Day at a Time”) has made Lopez vs. Lopez a multi-season success. Debby describes her practices for creating psychological safety in a creative environment, the quality all of her most successful peers share, and the real life struggles that fuel her sitcom's plotlines.
