In this week's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo returns to the past to investigate supernatural thrills while chatting with David Koepp about the 25th Anniversary 4K release of his cult-favorite film, “Stir of Echoes.” The 1999 psychological horror film stars Kevin Bacon as a man who, after being hypnotized at a party, begins experiencing disturbing visions that lead him to uncover the mystery of a missing neighborhood girl. Directed and written by David Koepp ("Jurassic Park," "Spider-Man," "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny"), the film also features Kathryn Erbe, Kevin Dunn, Illeana Douglas, and Zachary David Cope. During the chat, Koepp reflected on the enduring appeal of “Stir of Echoes” and revisited it decades later for the special edition release. He credited the film's success to a rare synergy of creative talent. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Jennifer spills the beans on what it takes to be an actress in Hollywood. We talk "Beverly Hills Housewives", how your gal pal will cover your problem spots in lesbian love scenes, poker, glamour, getting hit on by producers, and the indignity of promoting yourself by going on to podcasts like this one.Bio: Jennifer Tilly received an Academy Award nomination for her role in Woody Allen's “Bullets Over Broadway” for her memorable portrayal of the terribly untalented Olive, actress wannabe, and gangster's moll. Her performance in “Liar Liar” as Jim Carrey's gold-digging client earned her an American Comedy Award nomination, as well as a Blockbuster award nomination as Favorite Supporting Actress.Tilly is perhaps best known from the indie noir film “Bound”, which has earned her a cult following. “Bound,” directed by the Wachowski's follows two lesbian con artists trying to rip off the mob. The film garnered many accolades including a GLAAD media award, and a Saturn award nomination (Best Actress) for Tilly. Other film credits include “The Getaway,” “The Fabulous Baker Boys,” “Let It Ride,” “The Cat's Meow,” “Intervention,”(Winner-Best Actress-San Diego Film Festival) “Dancing at the Blue Iguana,” “Made in America,” “Bride of Chucky,” (Saturn Award nominee-Best Actress) “Seed of Chucky,” “Curse of Chucky,” “Cult of Chucky,” “The Crew,” “The Wrong Guy,” “Inconceivable,” (Winner-Best Actress-WIFT) “An American Girl,” “Edie and Penn,” “Hide and Seek,” “Saint Ralph,” “The Doors,” ”Relative Evil” (Winner-Best Actress-DVD Exclusive Awards) “Second Best,” “Tidelands,” and many more. Other notable TV appearances include “Modern Family,” “Drop Dead Diva,” “Moonlighting,” “Cheers,” and “Frasier.” She had recurring roles on “Hill Street Blues,” “It's Garry Shandling's show (Ace award nomination-Best Actress) and “Out of Practice” (CBS). She was a series regular on “Key West” (Fox) and “Shaping Up.” (NBC) Tilly is in great demand as a voice over actor. For the last twenty-two years she has delighted audiences as Bonnie on “Family Guy.” She played the snaky haired Celia in Pixar's classic movie “Monster's Inc.,” as well as the Disney+ series “Monsters at Work,” Grace, the new age cow in Disney's “Home on the Range,” a con mouse in “Stuart Little,” and Madame Leota in “The Haunted Mansion.”Theatre credits include "Tartuffe," (LA Public Theatre) "Boy's Life" (LAAT) and "Baby With The Bathwater," (LAPT) and “Vanities,” (Dramalogue Award-Best Actress) She received a “TheatreWorld Award” (Best Newcomer) for her performance in Second Stage's "One Shoe Off" at the Joseph Papp Theatre.  Tilly is also a regular performer in the smash hit comedy revue, “Celebrity Autobiography” and Illeana Douglas' “Living Room Show.” These days Jennifer is dividing her career between acting and poker. Illeana Douglas is an avid student of the movies who grew up, stepped onto a set and entered the big screen of her childhood dreams. Her deep interest and knowledge of film legend and lore provided her with rich opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations with the stars and directors she has imagined meeting and then encountered along her way, including Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Marlon Brando, Martin Scorsese, Roddy McDowall and so many more. With a rare ability to manifest full circle moments, Illeana has  worked with the two men who upended her childhood, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Their film, Easy Rider had inspired her father to check out of suburbia and into a hippy commune, leaving the family financially destitute. That struggle is documented in her award winning book, I Blame Dennis Hopper. As a starving actress, Illeana went to work for a publicist in the Brill Building and years later, starred in Grace of My Heart, about songwriters in the Brill Building. Her fascination with her lost suburban childhood led her to write a new book called, Connecticut in the movies, WHILE she was restoring her own Connecticut dream home, a similar desperate effort to that of Mr. Blandings. Connecticut's role in American movies has evolved over the years from that of a metaphor for healthy, country living (Holiday Inn, Christmas In Connecticut) to a representation of our post-war suburban shift, the strain the work commute placed on marriages and the racism found in planned communities, (The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, Gentleman's Agreement) to a depiction of dark suburbia and societal collapse (The Swimmer, The Ice Storm), to horror and dystopia. (The Stepford Wives, Let's Scare Jessica To Death.) Illeana, is a complete delight and she joins us for an in depth discussion about all things movie and many things Connecticut. Plus, elections are coming and Myra Page and Joan Bowman are here from Commit To Democracy to teach us how we can all do more than just vote this critical election season!Path Points of Interest:Illeana DouglasConnecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses To Dark SuburbiaI Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories Lived From In And Out Of The MoviesIlleana Douglas on WikipediaIlleana Douglas on IMDBIlleana Douglas on InstagramMedia Path PodcastGift of DemocracyCommit To DemocracyCommit To Democracy FacebookCommit To Democracy YoutubeCommit To Democracy Instagram

Writer, comedian, and Lydia Tár's former publicist Daniella Mazzio joins to discuss Gus Van Sant's sharp, pitch-black satire of media, true crime, and a patently American brand of late 20th Century celebrity, 'To Die For'. The film is based on the Joyce Maynard novel of the same name, itself inspired by the true life trial of Pamela Smart, who seduced a teenage boy and coerced him and a friend to murder Smart's husband. The film features an excellent ensemble cast, including Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon, Illeana Douglas, and a career-best Nicole Kidman. We discuss 'To Die For' as a nexus of many careers at compelling inflection points: Nicole Kidman breaking into leading woman roles while married to Tom Cruise, Gus Van Sant on the eve of his career skyrocketing to new heights with the success of the following year's 'Good Will Hunting', and the chance casting of Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix who would later become in-laws and artistic collaborators. Then, we examine the brilliant, kaleidoscopic script by 'The Graduate' screenwriter Buck Henry and how the film's patchwork construction foregrounds it thematically rich details. Finally, we discuss the real life inspiration for the film as well as the way the movie's indictment of the American media landscape anticipated elements of the OJ Simpson trial, which was playing out during the film's production and concluded just days before its release. (Editor's Note: This episode was recorded before OJ Simpson's death on April 10th, 2024 at the age of 76).Follow Daniella Mazzio on Twitter. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Illeana Douglas, Acclaimed Actress, Producer, Director, Author, “Connecticut in the Movies” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Illeana Douglas, is a highly acclaimed actress, writer, producer, and director, who's brought us some of the most memorable performances in classic films including “Goodfellas”, “Guilty By Suspicion”, “Cape Fear”, “Alive”, “Search and Destroy”, “To Die For”, “Happy, Texas”, “Message in a Bottle” and many more.  And yes, all of those blood curdling screams in “The Last Temptation of Christ” are hers, and yes, she's the girl who got her face bitten off by Robert De Niro in “Cape Fear”.    On television you've seen her in dozens of movies, miniseries and TV shows including “Weapons of Mass Distraction”, “Bella Mafia”, “Lansky”, “Action”, “Law & Order: SVU”, “The Skinny”, “Goliath” and “Six Feet Under”, for which she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.   She also created, wrote and frequently directed the world's first-ever branded web series, “Easy to Assemble”.  In addition to winning a whole slew of prestigious awards including 6 Webbies, our guest – in my opinion - also achieved the impossible:  she actually made it COOL to shop at IKEA.   Our guest is also a great lover of classic films, which comes as no surprise, given that she's the granddaughter of the legendary actor Melvyn Douglas.  She can often be seen on the Turner Classic Movies network, interviewing cinematic giants and hosting the Spotlight Series, including “Funny Ladies”, “Second Looks”, and “Trailblazing Women”.   She's participated in scores of documentaries about film history, and she produced and hosted the highly popular podcast, “The Film Scene”, in which she interviews celebrities about classic movies.   Her first book, entitled, “I Blame Dennis Hopper, And Other Stories from a Life Lived In and Out of the Movies”, was named “one of the best books of 2015” by Entertainment Weekly.   And her latest book is a real gem for film buffs.  It's called “Connecticut in the Movies:  From Dream Houses to Dark Suburbia”, and it explains how the cinematic perception of Connecticut, originally created in Hollywood movies like “Bringing Up Baby” and “Christmas in Connecticut”, has shifted in recent years.  The book offers some surprising conclusions about just what it means to be a “Connecticut movie.” For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Illeana Douglas, go to: https://www.illeanadouglas.com/https://www.facebook.com/Illeanaramahttps://www.instagram.com/illeanaramahttps://twitter.com/illeanarama #IlleanaDouglas    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

In this chat, we get to meet actor and writer Illeana Douglas. Illeana is best known for her film work, costarring in films as wide-ranging as Scorsese's Cape Fear, Gus Van Sant's To Die For, or (one of my personal favorites) Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World. In addition to her film and television, Illeana is also an accomplished writer and film historian, and she has just published her second book, entitled Connecticut in the Movies. In this chat, Illeana and I discuss a LOT about her new book, which was especially exciting given that I grew up in Connecticut just like she did. We talk about the many different versions of CT that have been seen in the movies, the cliches and stereotypes, and the varied styles of films made or set here - from dark suburban dramas to sex comedies. We talk about how surprisingly integral CT has been to filmmaking, and how the state's perception has shifted and ping-ponged from accurate to, well, less-so. We touch on Mystic Pizza's place as our emblematic film, the idea that characters from CT have something odious to hide, and much more. Now, we recorded this while the SAG strike was still ongoing, so we couldn't talk much of her acting work. But fear not - there was plenty to talk about. Thank you for listening.

Film star Illeana Douglas is Jen's guest today. Ileana is the author of the gorgeous new book: Connecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses to Dark Suburbia. This spans around 100 years from the silent film era up through the early 21st Century. This beautiful coffee table book is filled with delicious never-before-seen movie stills and back lot stories. Illeana  has starred in too many films to mention. You know her from the movies including Cape Fear, Ghost of My Heart, Good Fellas, and To Die For, plus the many television shows like Entourage, Seinfeld, and Six Feet Under. Her first book, I Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories from a Life Lived In and Out of the Movies was named Best Pop Culture book of the year in 2015 by Entertainment Weekly. With Connecticut in the Movies, readers revisit classic films and are introduced to deep cuts. Illeana also places more contemporary films in context. My favorite chapter is Dark Suburbia Redux which focuses on more contemporary films like The Ice Storm 1997, directed by Ang Lee and starring Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver.   I love it, but so do so many others. Here's what Pulitizer-Prize winning investigative journalist Ronan Farrow had to say: “In Connecticut in the Movies, Illeana Douglas puts on her historian's hat and takes readers on a compelling tour of her adopted state's surprising, colorful, and sometimes dark history in cinema. Her adoration of the state, and the movies, leaps off of these pages—and it's infectious.” Contact Booked Up: You can email Jen & the Booked Up team at: BOOKEDUP@POLITICON.COM or by writing to:  BOOKED UP  P.O. For this episode, I am happy to welcome back as my guest, film enthusiast and podcaster The Vern, who has chosen as his film the dark comedy, Gus Van Sant's To Die For, while I have chosen Luchino Visconti's feature film debut, Ossessione, both films about woman manipulating men to commit murder for them. Fun times. Fun times.   And in this episode we answer the following questions: What did the writers get wrong about driving in New Hampshire? Why was Ossessione banned in Italy and then prohibited in the US after the war? What happened in real life that was different in To Die For? Who ran screaming from the film festival premier of Ossessione screaming—This is not Italy? What is the appeal of femme fatales? What is a homme fatale? Who is G. Clifford Prout? Why didn't Anna Magani play the lead in Ossessione? Where does the author of the book To Die For appear in the movie? Is there a coded gay character in Ossessione? Why does Illeana Douglas have a cast on in the second half of the movie?   Meanwhile look up The Vern's podcast CinemaRecall at Cinemarecall.net.   The Vern has been a previous guest on my podcast. They're working out what to do next – Rebecca's got a clearer path than Enid, who's got to get through an excruciating remedial art class (taught by Illeana Douglas) in order to get her high school diploma. One day Enid and Rebecca prank a lonely guy behind a personal ad. Soon, hermetic record collector Seymour (Steve Buscemi), enters their cool, misanthropic world and unsettles their folie à deux friendship for good.See AlsosThe Women of Ghost World on Working with Terry ZwigoffThe Dan Clowes Reader edited by Ken ParilleThe work of Aline Kominsky-CrumbTavi Gevinson's interview with Dan ClowesThe work of Julie Doucet (Drawn & Quarterly)Ione Skye's short David Goldberg based on "Ice Haven' from 2011Seance in Wowsville, Criterion essay by Howard HamptonGhost World at 20Tillie Waldren, author of On a Sunbeam, I Love This PartBrodie's post about Scarlett's ironing boardsWatch AlsoCrumbFunny PagesAmerican SplendourDiary of a Teenage GirlDaria season 3, episode 5: “The Lost Girls” (here's the episode of Doree Shafrir's podcast Rerun where Aminatou Sow discusses it)Find us on Instagram @seealsopodcast Hosted on Acast. Allyson makes Mike watch the 1999 Kevin Bacon thriller Stir of Echoes. It's a creative ghost story based on the 1958 Richard Matheson novel of the same name. Unfortunately, the timing of this big screen adaptation likely got lost in the shadow of the hugely popular M Night Shyamalan hit The Sixth Sense. Still, Stir of Echoes has some great qualities, namely the outstanding supporting cast that includes the always wonderful Illeana Douglas and Kevin Dunn.If there's a thriller that you really enjoyed and think we might to, join our Facebook group and let us know!https://www.facebook.com/groups/youmademewatchFollow us on Instagram @YouMadeMeWatch to get sneak peeks at which movie we'll talk about next.Logo by Martin Butler.
