Welcome to Jake's Happy Nostalgia Show, the podcast where nostalgia comes alive! In today's episode, we chat with writer and author, Ellis Weiner. From his early days as an editor at National Lampoon and columnist for Spy Magazine, to his work with the Muppets (including writing the mock behind-the-scenes book The Great Muppet Caper!: The Making of the Masterpiece!), Ellis has left his mark on comedy. But he's also touched the lives of countless children through his work in television. He co-created the beloved PBS series The Puzzle Place and contributed his writing talents to shows like Reading Rainbow, Shining Time Station, The Noddy Shop, Clarissa Explains it All, Bear in the Big Blue House, Barney & Friends, and Between the Lions.
On what it was like covering Donald Trump's recent inauguration. On why fools continue to believe Trump cares about them. On whether American democracy can survive. On his early journalism days at Gawker.
I feel like I scored big to have Ragen Chastain on the podcast. She is a deep dive researcher, writer, speaker and font of information on fatness and medicine, sports, fitness and society. If you've thought it, she's written about it. I can't recommend her newsletter enough. I nearly cancelled our interview so I could take more time to collect my thoughts. Everything I want to talk about, she's there (including her two marathons and champion Dance career- time to NERD OUT ON DANCE AND RUNNING!). It feels like we said so much and only scratched the surface of these important topics: making running and athletics ACTUALLY inclusive, GLP drugs like Ozempic and the sc-fi seemingly magic pill world we're now living in, what does it mean when being a Fat person is classified as a 'lifelong' disease, and so much more. I hope to have Ragen back, if only to keep nerding-out about running and dance. You can find Ragen, Speaker, Writer, Researcher, Board Certified Patient Advocate and her work on IG, monthly Workshops, newsletter here. She is also the Co-author of HAES Health Sheets, Weight-Neutral Healthcare Guidesand does speaking engagements at sizedforsuccess.com as well as being a Fellow at Campaign for Size FreedomHer current Study is Experiences of Weight Stigma and Iatrogenic Harm in the Highest Weight PatientsRagen mentioned several 'back of the pack' running influencers and fat activists:Ilya Parker - Decolonizing Fitness Mirna Valerio - The Mirnavator Martinus Evans - 300 pounds and runningI talked up my Virtual Run Club for being actually beginner/inclusive.And a piece I wrote on fitness being a hobby. ABOUT DAEMON MANX Daemon Manx is a recovering addict who spent nearly a decade in the prison system where he focused on recovery and learned to write horror. Making the most of his second chance at life, Daemon recently celebrated eleven and a half years clean and sober and is celebrating that milestone with the release of his upcoming series The Ojanox. He is a Splatterpunk Award nominee, received the H.A.G. award for his story The Dead Girl in 2021, and was a bonus round winner on the gameshow Wheel of Fortune in 1999. But all that pales in comparison to what Daemon is infamously known for, sideswiping Ronald Reagan's limousine. Fortunately … or unfortunately, no presidents were harmed in the accident. Teresa StrasserTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Teresa Strasser. Teresa first came into my heart as co-host / sidekick on The Adam Carolla Show on the radio, then in podcast form. I have wanted to get Teresa on the show for quite some time. Special thanks to Vinnie Tortorich for helping make this happen. In this episode, Teresa and I chat about how she came to work on the radio in Hollywood, in sort of a unique way. Then we discuss her podcast with Gina Grad, called Easy Listening. She explains what the show started out as, and why the show recently ended. Next we get into her book. The book is called Making It Home: Life Lessons From a Season of Little League. Teresa explains why she felt like she needed to write this book, and who it is for. The backstory of the book, is that Teresa and her father are repairing their relationship and coping with grief, while attending every game in a season of her son's little league baseball games. Teresa lost her brother and her mother 4 months apart. This is the story of coping, grieving, and healing..... through the ups & downs of her little boy's athletic efforts... all while repairing her relationship with her father. This is an extraordinary story, written by a remarkable author. I enjoyed this book very much. Touching, funny, sentimental, while on the edge of your seat with the winning and losing of the season. We do touch a bit on what it is like to grow up separated from your sibling, and Teresa tells a story of sweet, sweet vindication from her wicked, wicked stepmom. GET THIS BOOK!

I have always wanted to try something new, to put myself in situations where I was a little breathless, where there's an itch to scratch, and where I ask myself: can I really succeed at this? -Connie Johnson Hambley After struggling with how to describe this week's guest, I've landed on “Renaissance woman” not only because she is an expert in so many fields, but because she is prolific at everything she does. Born and raised on a dairy farm in upstate New York, Connie recalls a childhood where she could step out her back door and roam 400 acres of idyllic farmland. The farm was a family business. Connie's family grew their own hay and corn for their cows, processing the milk at their own dairy, and delivering it to customers far and wide. But it was also at this dairy farm where Connie's internal compass was rattled when a disgruntled employee struck a match setting the barn on fire at feeding time. This singular event sparked a lifelong interest in discovering why people do what they do. Says Connie: “ A new mantra came into my life after the fire: bad things happen to good people. And bad people can look wonderful and still do reprehensible things. “ A prolific writer and author, Connie has a law degree, she's been a fashion model, worked at an ad agency, been the vice president of a bank, and an adjunct professor of finance. But in this interview, we learn that along the way, this two-time winner of the Best English Fiction Literary Award for her crime stories not only has a love affair with words, but a deep desire to hear what isn't said, mining for gold between the lines. And Connie sets daily goals for herself as an author: “When I'm really into my writing, I park my butt in that chair and I don't get up until I've put down 1000 fresh new words.” The mother of three, Connie is also a world traveler whose love for adventure has been passed on to her grown children. In this latest chapter of her ever-evolving story, Connie is focused on the financial exploitation of elders and is determined to use everything she knows to shine a bright light on the systemic mistreatment of our senior citizens. #author #writer #crime #elderabuse
