I've been working on this for months now, and it is finally here! Introducing my new podcast that I created with my friend, business partner, and Tone Mob Podcast alumni, Scott Marquart. If you like the... odd side of music, you'll enjoy these tales. You can find Tape Spaghetti on the same platforms you get The Tone Mob Podcast as well as video episodes on YouTube. Here is the description for this episode that I copied from the main TS feed: This week on Tape Spaghetti, Blake & Scott unravel one of the eeriest, darkest threads in music history: the twisted tale of Charles Manson and his brush with late-‘60s rock stardom. Before he became a household name for all the wrong reasons, Manson fancied himself the next folk-rock prophet—and actually got closer to achieving his goal than you might think. In this chat the guys dig into his bizarre connections with L.A.'s music elite, from jam sessions at Dennis Wilson's house to a reworked Manson song making its way onto a Beach Boys record. It's a wild ride through failed recording deals, cult manipulation, and the uneasy intersection of fame and fanaticism. As the story spirals toward infamy, Blake & Scott reflect on how Manson's musical dreams bled into his nightmarish legacy. Creepy, compelling, and full of "how the heck did that happen?" moments—this one's a chilling twirl you won't want to miss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
'69 AND THE CRIME ETCHED IN TIME -"When I Was 17, It was not a very good year"Rich BucklandWell. Here is something I've yet to get over in all the years since I first read the grisly details of Sharon Tate's murder in the Sunday newspaper's Parade magazine when I was just a wacky hippie teen and beach Boys fanatic.Cult-leader and killer Charles Manson and Beach Boy drummer and surfer Dennis Wilson were friends. For a while, at least. Good enough friends that Manson and his “family” of young women lived with Wilson for several months. Good enough friends that Wilson convinced the Beach Boys to include a song written by Manson, who had musical ambitions, on their album 20/20.Which brings me back to the main bad guy, Charles Manson. I knew as early as the Parade magazine article that Manson and his “family” had gone to Sharon Tate's house looking for Terry Melcher, who did not live there. And I knew that Manson's actual target was this Terry Melcher, who I also knew was Doris Day's son. As it turns out, he was an important producer in the music industry.Yes indeed gand. The 60's was not all Peace, Love and Understanding. In 1988, Melcher earned a Golden Globe nomination for co-writing the song "Kokomo" with John Phillips, Scott McKenzie and Mike Love. Recorded by the Beach Boys, the song was featured in the 1988 Tom Cruise film Cocktail and hit No. 1 (the band's career fourth overall) on the Billboard Hot 100. The single was certified gold with U.S. sales of more than one million copies.[18] Melcher later co-wrote and produced the band's 1992 studio album Summer in Paradise, which was the first record produced digitally on Pro Tools.Charles Manson- The White AlbumOne of the two great influences on the thinking of Charles Manson, along with the Book of Revelation, was the musical group the Beatles. According to Family members, Manson would most often quote "the Beatles and the Bible." The two influences were linked, in that Manson saw the four Beatles members as being the "four angels" referred to in Revelation 9. Revelation 9 also tells of "locusts"--the Beatles, of course--coming out upon the earth. It describes prophets as having "faces as the faces of men" but with "the hair of women"--an assumed reference too the long hair of the all-male English group. In Revelation 9, the four angels with "breastplates of fire"--electric guitars--"issued fire and brimstone"--song lyrics.Manson believed that the Beatles spoke to him through their lyrics, especially those included in the White Album, released in December 1968. Several songs from the White Album crystalized Manson's thinking about a coming revolt by blacks against the white Establishment. He interpreted many of the songs idiosyncratically, believing, for example, that "Rocky Raccoon" meant black people and "Happiness is a Warm Gun" was a song about getting firearms to carry on the&

In the summer of 1968, the Beach Boys' drummer Dennis Wilson invited a hippie guru and his grungy harem to squat in his Pacific Palisades home. Dennis was the handsome California surfer that his brother Brian wrote all those hit songs about, while the hippie cult would soon be infamous the world over as the Manson Family. What happened when the Wilsons met the Mansons would forever change Dennis, the band, and American history itself. For a full list of contributors, see the show notes at disgracelandpod.com. Have we mentioned how much we love, love, LOVE this year's crew of Novant Health Charlotte Marathon Ambassadors? Dennis Wilson is one of the reasons why. This guy is repping at pretty much every event around town – even the less-than-exciting stuff, like plogging along East Boulevard with our pals from the Charlotte Running Club, the Charlotte Running Company, and Keep Charlotte Beautiful. (Shameless plug, but hey…) But seriously, Dennis is practically everywhere. He's relatively new to the Charlotte area, and to running, but he's embraced both in a big way. Sure, he still finds time to get back to New York and Connecticut to visit. And run, of course. But when you meet him, you'll agree: he's the kind of community-maker you want to stick around in CLT. Lindsey McGee and DC Lucchesi got a chance to hang with him for a quick 30 on this episode of The Running Around Charlotte Podcast, presented by Novant Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Also mentioned in this program: Episodes with Cornell Jones and Mad Miles https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-around-charlotte/id1466653446?i=1000549669976
This week's guest, producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Evan Taylor (Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Loantaka Records), brings us The Beach Boys' 21st studio album - and the last one under the group's name to be written and produced solely by troubled leader Brian Wilson - 'The Beach Boys Love You'. Released in 1977, this strange, at-times childlike collection of songs sounded like nothing else the band had done up until then. With raspier-than-usual vocals from the Wilson brothers and Brian's newfound infatuation with the Moog synthesizer, it left many fans/critics confused at the time but has since been recognized for presaging both synth-pop and new wave. Songs discussed in this episode: Good Vibrations - Brian Wilson (Live on SNL, 1976); Distant Star - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Jerry Harrison); Take 5 - Bernie Worrell; What Have They Done To My Funk - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Bootsy Collins, Michael Moon Reuben, Ouiwey Collins, Buckethead); Be My Baby - The Ronettes; Let Us Go On This Way, Hey, Little Tomboy, Roller Skating Child, Mona, Johnny Carson, Good Time - The Beach Boys; Good Time, Shyin' Away - American Spring; Honkin' Down The Highway, Ding Dang, Solar System - The Beach Boys; Solar System - Alex Chilton; The Night Was So Young, I'll Bet He's Nice - The Beach Boys; Shoot The Curl - The Honeys; Let's Put Our Hearts Together, I Wanna Pick You Up, Airplane, Love Is A Woman - The Beach Boys; Wave From The WOOniverse - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Miho Hatori)

Charles Manson was a monster. Spending over half of his first 32 years on the planet in an institution did not reform him. If anything it made him what he was. A smooth talking con man who used his influence over impressionable young people leading to horrifying results. Oh and he sucked at the guitar. Activated by a drastic misinterpretation of The Beatles message, Charles tried to start what he called "Helter Skelter", the race war. We don't know how many victims the Mason Family had, but we do know the Tate-LaBianca murders weren't the only ones. Join us as we get Historically High on Charles Manson.

I'm filled to the brim with love, compassion, and inspiration. I so enjoyed every moment in Lydia Cornell's most excellent company. A strong, talented, generous, capable woman, who knows who she is, where she's been, and where she wants to be, allowing for godshots that may alter her future at any turn, AFI Best Actress nominee and People's Choice Award winner Lydia, best known for her starring role in Too Close for Comfort, is all that and a standup comedienne, writer, director, public speaker, and activist. We went back to Lydia's early days in El Paso Texas, her Russian father, and challenging mother… the haircut, the Barbies, the boys, oh my! Moving to Scarsdale, starring in High School plays, college in Boulder., Colorado, and Hollywood by way of the music biz, Caribou Ranch…. some great stories there… Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Dennis Wilson, Henry Diltz, dating Paul Stanley and Donnie Most, and how her naive approach to breaking into the biz, worked! On her third audition, she landed a starring role on a hit TV show and garnered the fame she sought. Loads of TV shows and films followed, including co-starring with James Earl Jones right after shooting that first pilot. We talked about drinking, drugging, dieting, and the trouble they brought… getting sober, surrender, releasing resentments, recovery, and the innumerable gifts they continue to bring. Lydia's won acting, directing, and writing awards, as well as the Southern California Motion Picture Council's Golden Halo Lifetime Achievement Award, and the first Elizabeth Montgomery Humanitarian Award. It's the service she does every day as a woman in recovery that perhaps makes the greatest impact. A screenplay Lydia wrote 20 years ago is finding its place now, and the book she started years ago is also readying to bloom. Lydia's loving her life, writing, and loving with Larry––acting and looking perfect seeming less and less important. I'm loving this Lydia more than ever if that's even possible. Charles Manson and his "family" of followers went on a gruesome killing spree in L.A. during the summer of 1969. He claimed that his inspiration for some of it was the music of the Beatles (Helter Skelter in particular). But Manson had a much deeper connection to Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. It destroyed Dennis's reputation and his health, and changed his life forever. Follow Clay & Buck on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/clayandbuckSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
