It's also July 3rd on the day this episode is published, so happy 63rd birthday Tom Cruise! For the first Mission: Impossible, we speak on The Avengers from 1998. An adaptation of the popular British television series from the ‘60s, director Jeremiah S. Chechik's film was dismantled in post-production, slashed to ribbons following bad test screenings. The final product runs well under ninety minutes and is hard to understand. It sits on the other end of blockbusters in the ‘90s adapted from hit televisions from yesteryear. We also discuss the last five films Sean Connery made (animated film Sir Billi not included), as well as the ones he turned down. For Mission: Impossible II, we chose another John Woo American motion picture: Paycheck, starring Ben Affleck and The Avengers star Uma Thurman. This is a true B-Side, and the beginning of Affleck's now-infamous lost half-decade as a fledgling movie star. For Mission: Impossible III, we return to television inspiration. In honor of director J.J. Rosen has been hailed by The New York Times as “insanely ambitious,” “a sort of bridge between genres and generations, embracing Broadway standards, pop songs and the music of Tetris.” Broadway World hailed his orchestrations for “Some Like it Hot” — co-written with Bryan Carter — as “explosive… another first-rate team.” Opined JazzTimes of the 8-Bit Big Band: “[These are] innovative spins on a hidden musical canon that's arguably just booting up.” In 2021, Grammy.com proclaimed him to be one of “6 Big Band Composers Pushing The Format Forward.” Rosen was born in 1990 in Los Angeles, to a bassoonist and music teacher mother and pianist, banjoist, and silent movie theater organist father. When Rosen was three, his father ascertained that he had perfect pitch, when he successfully distinguished piano keys by color without seeing them. “That's a black key, that's a white key,” Rosen remembers intuiting. Rosen played flute in an elementary school orchestra, but that didn't really take. “I played cello for a year. That didn't really take,” Rosen says. But as his single digits flowed into his doubles, he accordingly took guitar lessons, and proceeded to perform in bands. “That was my first exposure to what it means to collaborate with your musical peers,” Rosen says, “as opposed to receiving rote classical music from a teacher.” Large ensemble jazz grew to captivate him most; his father frequently took him to see big bands and jazz orchestras, and his mother brought him to her orchestra rehearsals and chamber music performances. Rosen became fascinated by the sheer numbers of the musicians, the volume, and the force of the moving air. Saxophones, flutes, trumpets, banjos, guitars, and mandolins were around the house. “That influenced my love of arranging and discovering new instruments,” Rosen says — and he learned one after the other. Despite his parents' love of musicals, Rosen initially gravitated far more to classic rock and jazz. Yet in his sophomore year of high school, he nabbed a role in the coming-of-age Broadway musical “13” — which not only featured an entire cast of teenagers, but an all-teen orchestra. This led him to the comedic historical rock musical “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” — conversely, a full-on professional production with adults. Both shows transferred to Broadway one year apart, before Rosen was old enough to drink. Rosen studied at Berklee College of Music for a few semesters; around 2010, he decided to focus on Broadway for good. At first, he was a multi-instrumentalist in a variety of pits, and it became clear he was capable of much more. “I started being like, ‘I'll do anything. I can transcribe your piano parts. I'll write sheet music. I'll write horn parts for you,'” Rosen recalls. “Just to get my name out there as somebody who could be part of music teams.” In 2012, he started his first New York large ensemble, dubbed Charlie Rosen's Broadway Big Band. He went on to work on a plethora of Broadway shows, as an orchestrator, music director, music supervisor, and more — from “Moulin Rouge” to “Be Home Chill” to “Some Like it Hot.” Already, Rosen was reimagining what a big band could do. “I would take songs from Broadway shows, like I do with the 8-Bit Big Band, and totally flip them on their head — rearrange them,” he says, “and I would ask singers from the Broadway community to front it.” He began a long-running residency at Midtown Manhattan's 54 Below, and “invited as many music directors, supervisors and composers — anybody I could possibly think of — to come to this thing.” The 54 Below residency demonstrated Rosen's swelling chops for old-school, Broadway-style arranging. Fast forward through years of shows and connections, and in 2018, Rosen launched the 8-Bit Big Band, and the lifelong gamer picked up the torch of the “Great Video Game Songbook.” To date, they have released four albums: 2018's “Press Start!,” 2019's “Choose Your Character,” 2021's “Backwards Compatible,” and 2023's “Game Changer.” In 2021, Rosen won a Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella. He won one Tony in 2020, for his work on “Moulin Rouge!, and another in 2023, for “Some Like It Hot.” Another Grammy followed in 2023, for his contributions to the latter production's cast recording. He was also nominated for both a Tony and Grammy award for his work on the groundbreaking 2022 Broadway show “A Strange Loop.”Other productions Rosen has worked on as a musician, composer, music supervisor, and/or orchestrator include “One Man, Two Guvnors”; “Cyrano de Bergerac”; “Honeymoon in Vegas”; “American Psycho”; “Prince of Broadway”; “Be More Chill”; “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”; and “A Strange Loop”. He was the musical director for the 2016 TV series “Maya & Marty,” and 2020's “Arthur Miller Foundation Honors,” and arranged, orchestrated, conducted, and/or composed for 2017's “The President Snow,” the 2021 documentary “Listening to Kenny G,” and that year's Billy Crystal comedy-drama “Here Today,” as well as the music producer for the 2023 film “Wonka.” What binds it all together is Rosen's unshakeable faith in the unrealized potential of a piece of music, especially as it relates to its function for dramatic storytelling. How the music functions to deliver a story, or deliver a feeling — “whether someones up there singing or not,” Rosen says. “Or whether it's creating an arrangement to support a singer singing in a specific way, or an instrumentalist to solo in a way they do best. “Whether it's your movie, song, orchestra, TV show, or Broadway show,” Rosen concludes, “it's all essentially the same instinct, but through instruments.” Marc Shaiman, a Tony-winning theater and Oscar-nominated film composer, described Mr. Rosen as a big talent, but without the eccentricities that sometimes come along for the ride. ‘It's the kind of talent where I almost want to hate him,' Mr. Shaiman said. ‘But I can't.' You don't get to be Charlie without being insanely ambitious, but I think it's really an ambition to have as much music in his life and in his head and in his mouth as he possibly can. He just loves making music.”

(2004 – 2022).  She is a charter member of the all-woman big band The Diva Jazz Orchestra (1993 – present) based in New York City.  Liesl attended college at both Appalachian State University (Boone, NC) and The University of Cincinnati—College Conservatory of Music (Cincinnati, OH). She studied trumpet with Bill Adam, Pat Harbison and Joe Phelps. In 2004 and 2005, Liesl performed with the WDR Big Band in Cologne, Germany, recording with the ensemble and Conductor/Chief Arranger Michael Abene and guest artist Joe Lovano.  Additionally, she has performed on various recordings including projects by the Army Blues and Jazz Ambassadors, Sherrie Maricle and the Diva Jazz Orchestra, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, Victor Goines Big Band, Ed Palermo Big Band, various original Broadway cast recordings, as well as many others. Liesl currently resides in upstate, New York with her husband, Kenny Rampton, and her daughter, Lauren. Sometimes wrangling comedians can seem like herding cats -- but in 1986 everyone and everything came together for Comic Relief US -- a charity originally focused on helping America's homeless population which mounted a series of comedy spectaculars right up until the early 2000s. The organization continues to do good work today -- even staging a live LA Fire benefit -- but it's those early televised events (aired on HBO) that cemented its legendary status. The Comic Relief shows were hosted for many years by Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams and they featured top stand-up, sketch, and musical comedians -- and boy was the bullpen loaded! "Comedy writers learn early on that we have a high degree of anonymity," writes podcast guest Alan Zweibel in his memoir Laugh Lines: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier. "Our words are spoken publicly by others who often have famous faces. Or by unknown people on their way to having famous faces." As one of the founding writers on Saturday Night Live, Alan's words were given voice by a cast of virtual unknowns, all on their way to becoming famous faces, eventually earning worldwide acclaim as some of the most iconic comic performers of their generation. Over the course of his 50-year career, he has penned jokes for dozens of Borscht Belt comedians and written for some of SNL's most memorable characters (such as Gilda Radner's "Roseanne Rosannadanna," John Belushi's "Samurai," and Garrett Morris's "Chico Escuela"), and helped to craft SNL producer Lorne Michaels's now-legendary appeal to invite the Beatles to appear on the show for the standard artist fee of $3,000.  Alan is the recipient of five Emmy Awards for his work in television, which in addition to SNL also includes "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (which he co-created and produced), "The Late Show with David Letterman," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." He is the author of 11 books, including the 2006 Thurber Prize-winning novel The Other Shulman, and Bunny Bunny: Gilda Radner—A Sort of Romantic Comedy, and six off-Broadway plays. This week on The Video Store Podcast, I'm recommending four offbeat cop films that have stuck with me over the years. These films can be funny, gritty, offbeat, and sometimes kind of chaotic in the best way possible. So what movies am I recommending?Running Scared (1986) – Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as two wisecracking Chicago detectives. This one's got a great mix of comedy and action, and it leans into that mid-80s buddy cop energy without taking itself too seriously. Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” is on the soundtrack, which feels like a time capsule in itself.Miami Blues (1990) – Alec Baldwin in a role that's kind of hard to pin down. He plays a violent conman who ends up impersonating a cop. It's based on a Charles Willeford novel and keeps that oddball tone where you're not always sure if you're supposed to laugh or be disturbed. Fred Ward is great in it too, playing the worn-out detective trying to catch him.Freebie and the Bean (1974) – This one's messier than most cop movies, but it's intentional. Directed by Richard Rush, who also did The Stunt Man, it's full of reckless driving, dark humor, and strange tonal shifts. Alan Arkin and James Caan play the leads, and they're either chasing criminals or arguing with each other. It kind of laid the groundwork for a lot of buddy cop films that came later.Stakeout (1987) – Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez as partners on a surveillance detail that doesn't stay professional for very long. There's a good balance of suspense and comedy, and Madeleine Stowe holds her own in her first major role. It was directed by John Badham, who also did WarGames and Short Circuit, so the pacing is solid.If you're in the mood for movies where different type of cops break rules, hunt odd suspects or drive their car on the track of an elevated train, I think you will find something here you will like.Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Walker Kimberly Brandt is not only a personable and engaging woman; she's also a remarkable actress who has shared Hollywood movie screens with legends like Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton in "Dante's Peak" and Billy Crystal in "City Slickers." Walker is also a model, an international Best-selling author, and a coach whose transformative journey is deeply inspiring. Recuerdo la primera vez que probé el Toyota Prius, allá en el lejano 2001… no me convenció. La idea me parecía interesante pero la ejecución fallida. Y ni mucho menos imagine que este coche cambiaria el mundo del automóvil tal y como lo ha hecho. Sin duda, y de lejos, el coche más influyente del Siglo XXI, por su técnica… y también por su marketing. Y que puede morir a manos de los SUV... La idea era buena: Para pasar de 0 km/h a, pongamos unos 50 km/h consumes energía. Y cuando tienes que parar, por ejemplo, en un semáforo, esa energía la “tiras” en forma de calor a la atmósfera… en vez de aprovecharla para producir electricidad que luego te ayuda a mover el coche. Leí la información técnica de la marca y pensé “¡qué gran idea!” Luego bajé a probar el coche y lo primero que pensé fue, ¿un híbrido tiene se ser feo? Y es que os recuerdo que los primeros híbridos, todos japoneses, como por ejemplo el Honda Insight aparecido muy poco después, estéticamente estaban cortados por el mismo patrón. Y luego fui a probarlo… lo primero chocante, que ahora no le es tanto, es que dabas al contacto y el motor térmico no arrancaba… acelerabas suave y el coche se movía en silencio y a las pocas decenas de metros o antes si acelerabas más arrancaba el motor. Era un coche torpe, pues el motor de gasolina ofrecía poco más de 70 CV y los 45 CV extras del motor eléctrico no siempre estaban disponibles… esto para un coche que se acercaba a los 1.300 kg, era poca cosa. También chocaba que no se “sincronizaban” las revoluciones del motor térmico, que solo las intuías o oído, con la velocidad, fruto del cambio CVT y de la ayuda eléctrica. Había que tomarse las cosas con calma. El coche era amplio, silencioso, confortable, pero anodino… nada seductor… algo que sucede en muchos Toyota, pero más en este. Pero todo cambiaba cuando observabas los consumos, sobre todo en ciudad: ¡Eran extraordinariamente bajos. En 2003 llega la segunda generación supuso un paso adelante enorme. Desde luego en estética, pero también en eficiencia, pues se anunciaba que era capaz de recorrer 35,5 km por litro… una cifra optimista, pero lo cierto es que mejoraba en mucho al anterior. Confieso que al volante mis impresiones cambiaron y pensé “pues me temo que esto de la hibridación ha llegado para quedare… este coche va muy bien”. Y así era. Y además se convirtió en la viva imagen del ecologismo lo cual le convirtió en… … una estrella de Hollywood. California es la cuna del cine occidental y uno de los estados históricamente con normas más estrictas en lo que a emisiones se refiere. Y de pronto, el Prius se convirtió en un coche símbolo del ecologismo y todos los famosos y estrellas de cine que querían presumir de ecologistas, tenían que conducir uno. No puedo citar todos, pero no me resisto a incluir una pequeña lista… por que os aseguro que es pequeña: Alicia Silverstone, Billy Crystal, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Harrison Ford, Jack Nicholson, Kirk Douglas, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robin Williams, Salma Hayek, Susan Sarandon, Tom Hanks y Will Ferrell, entre otros muchos… una verdadera constelación de estrellas. La tercera generación el Prius aparece en 2009 y en realidad era una puesta al día de la anterior… pero ¿solo eso? Pues no, porque con ello llegó la segunda revolución de los híbridos. En 2012 se lanza el híbrido enchufable que yo probé a primeros del año siguiente. Lo tuve una semana. En esos tiempos trabajaba a unos 15 kilómetros de mi casa. Lo use para ir y venir, para darme algún paseo que otro por la sierra y un viajecito de fin de semana de unos 400 km de ida y vuelta. En total unos 800 km. Lo enchufaba cada día y esa semana, todo incluido, gasté… ¡unos 20 litros de gasolina! Una media de menos de 3 litros… y es que gran parte de los recorridos los hacia sin que el motor térmico llegase a arrancar. La cuarta generación se lanza en 2015 y ofrece una gran cantidad de mejoras, pero no en su sistema de hibridación, sino en el resto del coche. Se mejora la rigidez, la aerodinámica, se baja el centro de gravedad y se modifica la suspensión sobre todo la trasera, para hacer del Prius un coche más agradable de conducir. Lo cierto es que la hibridación del Prius ya si iba extendiendo a toda la gama de Toyota hasta el punto de que muchos decían si existiendo, por ejemplo, un Corolla Híbrido, el Prius tenía sentido… Pues de eso, los españoles, no nos vamos a enterar. ¿Por qué? La Quinta generación del Prius es un salto de gigante, solo nos basta ver su estética. Es una declaración de intenciones de que el Prius quiere tener identidad propia. Pero al menos de momento, no llegará a España. ¿Cuál es el motivo? Resulta cuando menos curioso que en coche tan innovador y tan rupturista se vea perjudicado, hasta desparecer en algunos mercados, por otra nueva moda… ¡lo has adivinado! ¡Los SUV! Una pena porque el nuevo híbrido, en la línea estética marcada por el eléctrico con nombre de agente secreto bZ4X, desde luego es algo muy diferente, por fuera y por dentro. Es un modelo que pretende tener unas ciertas cualidades incluso deportivas, con una potencia total de 223 CV y que puede montar un techo con placas solares… ideal para nuestro mercado, pero insisto no vendrá a España… al menos de momento. Conclusión. Venga o no a España esta última generación, e incluso aunque desapareciese por completo de la gama Toyota en todo el Mundo, el Toyota Prius ha marcado un verdadero cambio. No solo yo, nadie lo vio venir, nadie pensó en el comienzo de los años 2000 que en 2025 uno de cada tres coches vendidos en Europa iba a ser híbrido, en España casi uno de cada dos. Nadie lo vio venir. Y tal como están las cosas, creo que ese porcentaje en vez de bajar, a favor de los eléctricos, va a subir… y todo comenzó con el primer Prius, bastante feote, que no me acabó de convencer… pero que inicio un nuevo camino. Coche del día. En un vídeo sobre futuros clásicos dije que el primer Prius se podría convertir en un clásico… tiene en contra su elevada producción, pero a su favor ser un coche que casi nadie está conservando y que, como os he dicho, cambio el Mundo.

Initially an actress ('Les Miserables', 'Aspects of Love', et al.), Merri found herself out West some years back where she quickly made a name for herself at Liberman/Hirschfeld Casting, then Liberman/Patton Casting, working on such shows as Seinfeld, Party of Five, HBO's Band of Brothers, the feature film My Big Fat Greek Wedding and the Miramax feature film "Playing By Heart", starring Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie.  In 2000, Merri moved to Dreamworks Studios as the Casting Executive in charge of TV Pilots and Series- including "Spin City", “Freaks and Geeks” and the critically acclaimed "The Job", starring Denis Leary. But what if we take that concept and bring it to the animal kingdom, specifically to primates?The Kinda baboon is known for its distinct social behaviors. Individuals form long-term, social bonds, and those relationships are seen, uniquely, between male and female baboons. Over nine years, researchers studied the Kinda baboon, a kinder, gentler species of baboon, to learn more about their social lives. Kindas are unique among baboons because they're the least sexually dimorphic: males and females are close to the same size, making them a better analog for us humans.So can male and female baboons really be just friends? Much like the movie, long friendships do happen between Kindas—but there also appears to be a benefit during mating season.Joining Host Flora Lichtman to talk about her work with these baboons is Dr. Anna Weyher, founder of the Kasanka Baboon Project in Zambia.
