There's no better co-host for this, since, well...Emily and I watch more shows together than we do with anyone else, obviously. Given that spaghetti westerns and action/adventure flicks rarely have much to offer as far as dudes and chicks getting together, luckily Emily gets her turn every once in a while at having me sit through one of her "chick flicks". As a dating/relationship specialist, this is where the true "research" is, so I probably don't mind watching them as much as some other guys might.  So here's the deal, skip every rom-com with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore , Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, or Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan because they all follow the same formula. We also spared you another commentary on either Titanic or The Notebook. Instead, we start off by going after the Taylor Sheridan universe. We cover Rip and Beth from Yellowstone, Spencer and Alex from 1923, and pretty much every interesting couple in Landman. Then we get to: Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake in Friends With Benefits, Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple in Ted Lasso, Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek in Fools Rush In, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in Overboard, Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd in Moonlighting, Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger in Jerry Maguire, and several other "surprise" mentions. Then, we go back to '70s TV with Archie and Edith Bunker and George and Weezy Jefferson. As for our takes on all of these crazy characters, all I can say is expect the unexpected. This Is Spinal Tap Review takes Born to Watch somewhere few podcasts dare to go: backstage with Britain's loudest band, where amplifiers go to eleven, drummers have an alarming mortality rate, Stonehenge has serious measurement issues, and a beautiful piano composition can somehow be called “Lick My Love Pump”.Whitey, Damo and Dan are back to revisit Rob Reiner's 1984 mockumentary masterpiece, This Is Spinal Tap, a movie that barely made a ripple when it first arrived but went on to become one of the most influential comedies ever made. More than four decades later, the question is simple: is Spinal Tap still funny, or has the volume finally been turned down?For Whitey, the film has grown with every viewing. Watching it as a teenager meant missing half the jokes, but coming back to it years later reveals just how clever the movie really is. Damo is firmly aboard the Tap train, while Dan comes into this one having seen plenty of famous scenes over the years without previously sitting through the whole film from start to finish.That gives us the perfect mix for a Born to Watch review.The boys dive into what made This Is Spinal Tap so revolutionary. Rob Reiner, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer created something that looks and sounds so much like a genuine rock documentary that audiences could be forgiven for wondering whether Spinal Tap was actually real.And that is where the genius lives.There are no desperate punchlines or actors screaming at the audience to tell them where the joke is. The characters play everything completely straight. The stupidity is delivered with total sincerity, whether Nigel Tufnel is protecting a guitar that cannot even be looked at, Derek Smalls is calmly navigating another band catastrophe, or David St. Hubbins is watching his musical empire slowly fall apart.Then there are the moments that have become comedy folklore.Stonehenge.The amps that go to eleven.“Lick My Love Pump”.Smell the Glove.The constantly changing drummers.Getting hopelessly lost backstage.And some very questionable objects stuffed inside some extremely tight trousers.The boys pick apart their favourite scenes, with Dan loving the absurd brilliance of "Lick My Love Pump", Damo championing Nigel's priceless guitar collection scene, and Whitey finding himself laughing harder at the film than he ever has before.But this episode goes well beyond simply quoting the classics.The crew ask whether This Is Spinal Tap became the blueprint for the mockumentary format that followed. Would shows such as The Office and countless other mockumentary films and television series have existed in quite the same way without Reiner and the Tap boys showing everyone how it could be done?There is also plenty of love for the supporting cast and cameos. Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Fran Drescher, Fred Willard, Bruno Kirby, Paul Shaffer and Anjelica Huston all enter the conversation as the boys realise just how much talent is scattered throughout the film.Naturally, the episode also explores Spinal Tap's extraordinary musical history. The band's fictional back catalogue might contain some of the greatest album titles never released by a real band, from Intravenous DeMilo and Shark Sandwich to Smell the Glove, Silent but Deadly and the magnificent Bent for the Rent.Then it is time for all the regular Born to Watch madness.The Good, the Bad and the Ugly digs into what still works, what might require multiple watches to truly appreciate, and whether there is actually much "ugly" to complain about. The boys agree this movie is packed with jokes that are incredibly easy to miss the first time around, making repeat viewings almost essential.There is also Question Time, Quick Fire, Film School for F-Wits, plenty of musical detours and, naturally, another Kick Arse Credit Song from Dan.More than 40 years after its release, This Is Spinal Tap remains one of those rare comedies whose influence has become almost bigger than the movie itself. "Have fun stormin' da castle." We watched "The Princess Bride" with our friend Melanie Vartabedian and we're still shouting quotes from this movie at each other from across the room. This movie is an absolute classic but like, it's really deserving of that moniker. This cast is pitch perfect, the script is non-stop quotable gold, and the direction by gone too soon Rob Reiner is top notch. Who would have thought that Borscht-Belt humor would mix so well into a medeival fairy tale? Rob Reiner, that's who. The film adaptation of the book by William Goldman passed through many directors hands but it was Reiner who completed the task and he made it work. Bringing on board new talent like Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, along side comedy mainstays like Christopher Guest and Billy Crystal, this cast is nothing short of phenomenal. Oh and we definitely think this movie gives "The Mummy" a run for it's money with the sheer number of bisexual awakenings. This week on Bad Dads Film Review, the dads review Giant, the Prince Naseem Hamed biopic starring Amir El-Masry as Naz and Pierce Brosnan as legendary Sheffield trainer Brendan Ingle. It is a boxing film, a mentor-protégé story, a study of fame and arrogance, and a surprisingly knotty argument about whether loyalty, recognition and money can ever stay clean once a child prodigy becomes a multi-million-pound champion.The episode opens with Reegs still absent in French France, which means no clever intro but plenty of warnings about swears and spoilers. Dan has watched classic film noir Laura and revisited Universal Soldier for the Midweeker, Cris has been watching Pierce Brosnan in western series The Son alongside some nostalgic X-Men '97, and Sidey has been back into Barry while also sampling a Netflix serial-killer thriller involving De Niro and missing boys. There is also football, DIY, paint guns, teal walls and the sort of domestic detail that proves cinema podcasting is mostly glamour.For Top 5 Giants, the dads go suitably massive. Dan starts with The Iron Giant and the animated BFG, while Cris brings in Romanian basketball player Gheorghe Mureșan via Billy Crystal's My Giant, then stretches the theme through the MonsterVerse, The Odyssey, Leprechaun 4: In Space and Rush Hour 3. Sidey nominates Fezzik from The Princess Bride, They Might Be Giants, The The's “Giant”, Game of Thrones' actual giants and finally the Giant from Twin Peaks, giving him another chance to declare David Lynch's nightmare television more or less untouchable. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, Riding Giants and several real-life giants also get thrown into the oversized mix.The main review focuses on Giant as a story about two men rather than one. Prince Naseem is obviously the famous fighter, but the film arguably belongs just as much to Brendan Ingle, whose Sheffield gym gives young lads discipline, community and a way to redirect anger. The dads talk through the early scenes: Brendan spotting young Naz's footwork, taking him into the gym, making new boys sing before they fight, teaching movement before punching, and helping him deal with racist abuse in an environment where National Front attitudes are never far from the surface.As Naz rises, the film follows the familiar sports-biopic path of talent, training, showmanship and success, but the more interesting material comes from the relationship slowly cracking. Brendan nurtures Naz's cockiness because it fuels the fighter, but that same confidence becomes harder to control once promoters, sponsorships, family influence and huge money arrive. Frank Warren sees the commercial value of Naz's brash persona, the family starts questioning Brendan's cut, and the childhood handshake deal over 25% becomes the moral fault line of the film.Sidey and Dan both find that argument more complicated than the film first appears to suggest. Brendan clearly changes Naz's life, puts the money back into the gym, builds champions and cares deeply about the boy he trained from childhood. At the same time, agreeing a huge percentage with a 12-year-old is uncomfortable, however much both of them believed in the dream. The imagined reconciliation scene near the end gives the film its strongest emotional beat, because it lets Naz say he was a child and Brendan say he gave everything. The sting is that, in real life, they never properly reconciled.The performances get the strongest praise. Pierce Brosnan is very good as Brendan Ingle, and the various actors playing Naseem — especially Amir El-Masry as the adult Naz — capture the movement, swagger and showboating well. The fight scenes are convincing, the Sheffield material gives the story texture, and the film does enough with a modest-feeling British production to stay watchable throughout.The verdict is positive but measured. Sidey thinks it is pretty paint-by-numbers and admits he was never a huge fan of Naseem's arrogance, though he respects the story and really likes the performances. Dan enjoys the sports-movie structure and the tragic mentor-student angle, but does not think the film quite lands a knockout blow. Cris had not seen it in time for recording, but the discussion leaves the film sounding like one he would still watch. TGTPTU wraps Season 17 with return of former cohost Jack with his pick for a 1x1: Takashi Miike's Tokyo extreme adaption of Ryu Murakami's book of the same title AUDITION (1999).   Miike's film follows the journey of a TV producer and widower played by Japanese horror legend Ryo Ishibashi who, after nearly a decade of grieving and with the encouragement of his teenage son, decides to proverbially dive back into the dating pool with an inventive method for selecting a date: the casting couch. There he finds the love of his life, a former dancer turned aspiring actress played by model Eihi Shiina in her acting debut. After a few dates and a hotel getaway with this woman closer to his son's age, the movie turns subjective and hallucinatory when, *** SPOILERS*** upon the TV producer unable to track down his missing girlfriend who has been untruthful about her past, he is reunited with her and she with him and his foot with a bone saw and eyes and bodies with needles after she's administered a nerve agent. What's real and unreal is lost as the TV producer unconscious with pain remembers or reimagines their previous dates and his sexual transgressions and/or fantasies with the aspiring actress and other women seen through the film. ***SPOILERS OVER*** And their dog dies.   This ep, Jack gives zero facts; Ryan and Thomas swap roles and possibly bodies; and Ken reveals his fetish for feet and Billy Crystal.   The hosts also reveal the theme for Season 18, and Season 18's theme is revealed. (No, it's only redundant if you don't get the clue, meaning, the redundancy and repetition of the original statement are the clue, not to repeat ourselves like the films next season will do. Toye made the move into television directing after working for five years as a production assistant and a decade as an editor. This background in the editing room gave him a solid sense of how to tell a clear story, which helped considerably in his work on such complex series as Chuck (NBC 2007–12) and Fringe (Fox 2008–13). Los Angeles native Toye got his first screen credit working as a production assistant on Billy Crystal’s 1989 HBO special Midnight Train to Moscow, before moving into visual effects on films like The Addams Family (1991) and then working as an assistant editor on hit films such as Forrest Gump (1994) and Men in Black (1997). As a TV director, Toye cut his teeth on network TV action and sci-fi thrillers like Alias, Lost, and Fringe and has also worked on character-rich dramas such as The Good Wife. That experience running the gamut between drama genres served Toye well in recent years, directing episodes of genre series like Westworld, Snowpiercer, Watchmen and The Walking Dead. In 2024, his prolific output included The Boys and Fallout. The same year, Toye received acclaim for his work on Shōgun, helming four episodes of the Emmy-winning FX drama series, including season finale “A Dream of a Dream.” The season’s penultimate episode, “Crimson Sky,” earned Toye his first-ever Emmy for outstanding directing, which was also Toye’s first-ever career nomination in the category. Toye followed it up by directing the pilot episode of Prime Video's prequel series The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, starring Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch.
