Monocle 24: The Big Interview

After a career spanning almost six decades, US fashion icon Norma Kamali is still reinventing herself. After immersing herself in the London fashion scene in the 1960s and establishing a New York boutique at the end of the decade, Kamali quickly rose to prominence. Her designs could be found on the star-studded dance floors of Studio 54, on an iconic 1976 Farrah Fawcett poster and on Whitney Houston’s first album cover. She joins Monocle’s Emma Nelson to tell us about her approach to design, her dedication to wellness and how Donald Trump’s tariffs are affecting her business.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Is it appropriate to send a nostalgic yet controversial poster to your coworkers?" This thought-provoking question kicks off an unforgettable episode of The Ben and Skin Show on 97.1 The Eagle. Dive into a lively discussion as Ben and Skin reminisce about a provocative tennis poster from their childhood, sparking debates on social norms, nostalgia, and the boundaries of workplace appropriateness. In this episode, Ben shares a picture of a woman on a tennis court, wearing a see-through white dress with no undergarments, which he stumbled upon on social media. This image, once a poster on his childhood wall, leads to a humorous and reflective conversation about the era they grew up in, where objectifying women in suburban bedrooms was commonplace.Key Moments:Nostalgic Memories: Ben recounts how he acquired the poster, trading a polo shirt for it, and the impact it had on his childhood.Social Media Debate: The hosts discuss whether the image is suitable for posting on social media, considering modern standards and corporate policies.Cultural Reflection: A deep dive into the cultural norms of the late seventies and early eighties, exploring how attitudes towards such images have evolved.Humorous Insights: Skin's humorous take on the practicality of playing tennis in such attire and the pervy nature of the photographer.Guest Insights: While this episode does not feature a guest, the engaging banter between Ben and Skin, along with contributions from Christina and KT, provides plenty of entertainment and thought-provoking moments.Notable Quotes:"I was a six-year-old that had the Farrah Fawcett poster where she was Nipley. My mom said I would go in there and just stare at it with my mouth hanging open.""Is it pervy of the guy whoever took this pic? Here she is just enjoying herself playing tennis, and some guy's taking pictures as she walks away of her butt."Call-to-Action: Don't miss out on this nostalgic and controversial episode! Subscribe to The Ben and Skin Show on 97.1 The Eagle, leave a review, and share your thoughts on social media. “You're in acting class and you're studying Chekov or ‘Waiting for Godot' -- and then you end up doing 80s tits-and-a**… You caught on pretty quick what it was about and where the power lay.” -- Actress Heather ThomasWhat was it like to be an 80s poster icon and sex symbol? Susan and Sharon welcome The Fall Guy star and “80s Poster Lady” Heather Thomas. She's an actor, writer and activist -- but may be best known for her “Pink Bikini” poster, one of the best-selling pin-up posters of all time. Heather Thomas had leading roles in television shows like BJ and the Bear, The Love Boat and TJ Hooker -- as well as the movie Zapped! with Scott Baio, Willie Aames and Felice Schachter. But her most famous role was playing stuntwoman Jody Banks on the hit 80s television series The Fall Guy. Running for five seasons on ABC, The Fall Guy spawned board games, posters, a video game -- and just last year, a major feature film starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt -- and Heather Thomas! Since her days as a TV star and pin-up queen, Heather Thomas has gone on to an extraordinary career as a novelist, political activist, organizer and fund-raiser.  NOTE: This episode was recorded Dec. 2024, before the LA Fires. Our thoughts are with Heather and her family, and all those impacted by the fires. Stay safe. Be well. THE CONVERSATIONWORKING WITH MONKEYS: Clyde, the orangutan from Every Which Way But Loose, was her co-star once: “He thought it was funny to keep grabbing my boob. I thought he was gonna rip it off!” And a stint on BJ and the Bear led to producer Glen Larsen tapping her for the co-starring role in The Fall Guy. WORKING WITH TV PRODUCERS: “All of them are crazy. You're not gonna find any normal ones, not in those days. Everyone was nuts. And they still are.”"Smile more": Early on, the ABC network executives were afraid that Heather Thomas wasn't likable. So they put her in a bikini. “I guess that made up for me not smiling enough.” STUNT WORK: “Lee Majors almost broke my nose once.” "I was good on rollerskates!"In preparation for a Fall Guy episode, Heather trained with the Los Angeles Thunderbirds roller-derby team: “They showed me how to ‘break my back' on the rail -- it was really fun!”Ted Lange -- Isaac, the bartender on The Love Boat -- was one of Heather's favorite directors on the Fall Guy.A GOOD DIRECTOR: For Heather, it was someone who brought her into the filmmaking process. For Lee Majors -- it was anyone who got him home by 5:00pm! THE POSTER: Once the show was a hit, a poster was the next big step: “It outsold Farrah Fawcett. I bought a house. I was thrilled.”DIS-LIKENESS: Heather's image has been hi-jacked and used for everything from lighters, to puzzles, to notebook covers -- to a pillow!ON HAVING A FAMOUS BODY: “My body was my living. That's how I saw it.  So I had to feed it, exercise it -- I couldn't have an ounce of cellulite. It was part of the gig. But I didn't care, I was grateful. I was making more money than I ever had in my life. I was a kid.”ZAPPED! -- Teen sex comedy -- or sexual harassment?  “They tried to get me topless, but my contract said uh-uh!  So, they used a body double. There's a big disclaimer at the end of the movie saying that it's not my tits.”Activism: “Ever since they said, ‘You can't climb the tree, the boys can' -- I was a feminist.”So join Susan and Sharon -- and Heather -- as they talk fly-fishing, Star Wars, David Letterman,Teen Beat, Shaun Cassidy & Parker Stevenson, “Gabor-lore”, Cliff Robertson's toupeé, organizing your phone by decade, not complying in advance -- and canoeing with Henry Winkler!AUDIO-OGRAPHYFind Heather Thomas on Twitter at Twitter.com/HeatherThomasAF And find Heather Thomas on BlueSky at HeatherThomasAF.bsky.social Watch Heather Thomas in The Fall Guy on Peacock, Amazon Prime or Flixfling!Check DontGetPurged.org to make sure your name has not been purged from voter rolls!Find out more about CREW at CitizensForEthics.orgVITAL READINGGet Handbook for A Post-Roe America by Robin Marty at Bookshop.org.Check out Men In Dark Times by Hannah Ahrendt at Bookshop.org.Read Democracy Awakening by Heather Cox Richardson at Bookshop.org.You can also follow Richardson's substack.SUPPORT FOR THE LA FIRESOnline at DisasterAssistance.gov On the FEMA App for mobile devices or Call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362Calls are accepted every day from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. PST.More resources at Eaton Canyon Community Relief.Google List of LA County Resources. AIRBNB is offering temporary free housing for those displaced by the fires. Start here. PLACES TO VOLUNTEERGoogle Doc for Wednesday and ongoing.Volunteer with the Red Cross.TALK TO SOMEONEReach out to friends and family. Take care of yourself:Pro Bono Therapy for LA Wildfires - Google Doc. More mental health resources at LARevive.DONATINGMaster GoFundMe List for LA Fire Victims Google Doc.Displaced Black families in Altadena Google Doc. Gofundme pages for EATON CANYON COMMUNITY RELIEFCONNECTVisit 80sTVLadies.com for transcripts.Join the conversation at Facebook.com/80sTVLadies.Sign up for the 80s TV Ladies mailing list.Support us and get ad-free episodes on PATREON. In Honor of President Carter and to learn more about his presidency: Get Susan's new play about him and his Crisis of Confidence speech: Confidence (and the Speech) at Broadway Licensing.

Paulo relives a childhood Castle Grayskull nightmare and makes a Freudian slip that would give He-Man and Fisto a very profitable Only Fans account. Status Quo locking Spandau Ballet in the bathroom, Bananarama don't need town cars, a very thirsty Boy George and Bono's villain origin story, we find out how they made the original Band Aid - and yes, we do swoon over George Michael, his beautiful voice and very symmetrical black and white shirt. ELTON JOHN IS BLIND - for now, but he's getting better, a little click bait never hurt anyone. Dori does a live unboxing and finds a sheep dressed in sheeps clothing. Paulo found a movie staring Kirk Douglas and Farrah Fawcett that featured a lot of nudity. And only 10% of it was Farrah Fawcett. A millennial blogger has a few problems with Back to the Future, we in turn have a few problems with a millennial blogger and you'll never believe who's the Ted Danson doppelgänger. We hate all versions of Last Christmas except the original, but Paulo found one that made his palms sweaty. The year was 1977. The top selling cars were the Ford LTD and the Chevy Impala. The top movies were Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever. Gas was 65 cents a gallon. Stephen King published The Shining, and Farrah Fawcett published the poster. Meanwhile, over at NASA, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were carried aloft for a five-year mission. Yet here we are, 47 years later, and they're still going strong. Voyager I is 15.2 billion miles from Earth; Voyager II is 12.7 billion miles away, and both are traveling at about 35,000 miles-per-hour. And as amazing as all that is, that's not what I want to talk with you about in this program. I want to talk with you about the payload they both carry—specifically, the golden record.

My passion for creating music is a thing of the past. Or so I thought. I imagine a painter gets the same therapy by starting with a blank canvas and then creating an image using different mediums and colors. My colors have always been sound. In high school, the synths of HOOKED ON LOVE by Dead or Alive, and the beats of Man To Man Parish played in my room as I taped Farrah Fawcett posters over my Steve Kelso Colt Posters. Living in fear daily of what would happen if my father found out I was gay. Music saved me then, and I guess it still saves me now. Locking myself in a room for hours, maybe days and just being in a matrix of possible sounds calms me. When I started this mix, I had no intention of sharing it. Many people will hear sounds, and call it not music. But a few of you, that see the world in a different light will enjoy this ride. It's my fears, faith, hope, anger, and resolution in a 3-day therapy session. Hope you enjoy the ride.

Dressing Generations: Norma Kamali on Reinvention, Priorities, and the More You Do, the More You Can Do Mentality [REAIR]

This week, a conversation with iconic designer Norma Kamali. Recorded over Zoom from her office in Manhattan, we cover her 50-year career, from graduating from FIT with a degree in illustration to working for Northwest Airlines—which allowed her to fly to London on the weekends for only $29. It felt like a time capsule to hear her talk about the cultural revolution in London in the 1960s and how she would bring back pieces for friends, which led her to start a store, and eventually design her own pieces. Soon her designs were worn by Bianca Jagger, Bette Midler, and Cher. But at 29 Norma left her marriage, which meant walking away from the brand she'd quietly built with only $98 in her pocket. But starting over ultimately led her to create a brand with longevity and panache. From her unique sleeping bag coat design (worn by the doormen at Studio 54 and by those standing outside hoping it would increase their chances of getting in) to the now-iconic red swimsuit Farrah Fawcett wore on that famous poster, Norma has dressed generations. She's full of wisdom and perspective and gently gives me advice on everything from aging, to dating (she fell in love again ten years ago at 65), to how she views busyness—she says “the more you do, the more you can do.” We get into her thoughts on her industry's evolution and on upcoming generations. I hope I did her career and story justice in this conversation with a real icon. Show notes:- Find Norma on the Web | Instagram- Find me on IG: @letitouttt + @katiedalebout | Substack- 2 spots left in the Creative Clinic: book a call with me here- More on Creative Underdogs/In Process here | waitlist- Check out the Let It Out Kits | Write Kit | Talk Kit Waitlist- Kayleen Schaefer's episode- Kayleen's book, Text Me When You Get Home- Take the "We Don't Talk Anymore" survey on friend breakups- Learn more about my creative consulting & if you'd like to book a free session, book here!- Learn more about "Soft Stories"
