While he claims he not "looking past him, just looking through him", could Wilder be falling into an upset trap?Tyson Fury looks to been given the green light to return to boxing. As temperatures heat up, we hope the action in boxing does too. This year has been kind to us, though, so we'll try to be a little kind in our discussion. Last weekend, Mikey Garcia outclassed Adrien Broner over the distance on Showtime, while Jermall Charlo dispatched a clearly handicapped Jorge Sebastian Heiland. This Friday, again on Showtime, unbeaten Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields continues her professional march by stepping in with Nikki Adler, also undefeated. Also on Friday, welterweight Mauricio Herrera steps in with Jesus Soto Karass on ESPN. The sports network again shows boxing on Saturday, however, when it airs the card featuring Vasyl Lomachenko vs Miguel Marriaga. Basically there's a little something for everyone on this episode of Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, and Brin-Jonathan Butler and Patrick Connor will guide you through it. Follow us on Twitter! HBO Boxing Insiders Eric Raskin and Kieran Mulvaney look ahead to the fight between Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras and the rematch of Yoshihiro Kamegai and Jesus Soto Karass on HBO World Championship Boxing, Saturday, September 10 at 10 PM.
The moment almost none of us have been waiting for is here. Floyd Mayweather fights Andre Berto this weekend on Pay-Per-View, for way too much money, under the guise that this will be his final bout. As you can see, we're really excited about the prospect of paying $75 to watch Floyd fight a guy who lost to Jesus Soto Karass and Victor Ortiz. At least the undercard (Badou Jack vs George Groves, Roman Martinez vs Orlando Salido II, Ishe Smith vs Vanes Martirosyan) isn't laughable. Earlier Saturday on NBC, Peter Quillin fights a guy named Michael Zerafa (just go look on the internet yourself, trust us), and Cornelius Bundrage fights for the first time in about a year against Jermall Charlo. Austin Trout fights tonight (Tues) on FoxSports 1, but on Friday light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson continues to face sub-par opposition when he defends against Tommy Karpency on Spike, from Premier Boxing Champions. Talented welterweight Errol Spence Jr. fights in the co-feature. On CBS last Sunday from PBC, Anthony Dirrell won a ho hum decision over Marco Antonio Rubio, and in the co-feature Jamie McDonnell again defeated Tomoki Kameda by controversial decision. It's been a mediocre year, as you all know. But there's news about Scott Quigg and Nonito Donaire being nearly finalized, some pointing and laughing to do about upcoming cards... And joining James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor once again this week is Matthew Swain of The Queensberry Rules. Thanks for tuning in! (Photos: Lucas Noonan/PBC)
Here at Queensberry Rules Radio, we hope that nobody is taking our prognostication skills seriously. Basically when we predict a fight will end a certain way, just assume the opposite will happen. For instance, last week we predicted that the fun Showtime tripleheader we watched would probably suck, and it didn't. Robert Guerrer-Yoshihiro Kamegai was surprisingly competitive, Vasyl Lomachenko's clinic win over Gary Russell Jr. was high quality stuff, and even Devon Alexander vs. Jesus Soto Karass had a few momenths of intrigue. This week on TQBR Radio, Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Patrick Connor of Queensberry Rules cover that card, probably incorrectly, and preview this weekend's HBO card featuring Terence Crawford vs Yuriorkis Gamboa. Joining the blustery bloggers this week is author and Grantland editor Rafe Bartholomew. Thanks for tuning in! (Photos in slideshow: Joe Miranda)
Highlights and results from Robert Guerrero vs. Yoshihiro Kamgai, Gary Russell Jr. vs. Vasyl Lomachenko, and Devon Alexander vs. Jesus Soto Karass.
Oh, boxing. Oh, controversy. Funky happenings seem to follow boxing around like some type of Remora, feeding off the crumbs that fall by the wayside, sometimes consuming it whole. By the way, a Remora is one of those fish that kicks it with sharks all the time. That said, we have a new WBO junior welterweight belt-holder, and discussion of the fight that produced it is in order. Some can't seem to grasp the injustice of Chris Algieri's split decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov, others feel it was a close fight and the decision went the correct way. Bad Left Hook's James Foley and Patrick Connor of Queensberry Rules will weigh in with their absolute final, totally legit and 100% dead on opinions, which are certified awesome by minutes of sobriety. Also up for grabs: Demetrius Andrade's win over Brian Rose, and this coming weekend's card which includes Robert Guerrero vs Yoshihiro Kamegai, Gary Russell Jr vs Vasyl Lomachenko and Devon Alexander vs Jesus Soto Karass. Thanks for tuning in! (Photos by Peter Frutkoff)
Robert Guerrero returns to face Yoshihiro Kamegai, Gary Russell Jr. puts his undefeated record on the line against Vasyl Lomachenko, and Devon Alexander looks to bounce back against Jesus Soto Karass.
Robert Guerrero returns to the ring to face Yoshihiro Kamegai, plus Gary Russell Jr. vs. Vasyl Lomachenko, and Devon Alexander vs. Jesus Soto Karass on June 21, 2014.
We will be talking sports and having fun doing it. Expected to be joined by welterweight contender Devon Alexander, who will discuss his upcoming fight with Jesus Soto-Karass. Also, agent Craig Doman will join us to discuss the NFL Draft and more. Also talking all things NBA Playoffs, Michael Sam, MLB and so much more. Yes, that really happened on Saturday night. Marcos Maidana beat the billions out of Adrien Broner. And the lampooning that's resulted has been epic. There was other stuff that happened on the card, and most of it was at least decent, if not good. It just wasn't as huge as the main event. This week on Queensberry Rules Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Queensberry-Rules' Patrick Connor go with their patented no-huddle podcast approach to analyzing boxing. Joining these ridiculous rascals is TQBR contributor and Twitter extraordinaire Matt Swain. Also served up: the 2013 End of the Year Awards -- then TQBR Radio goes dark for a few weeks. Thanks for tuning in!
This episode will start with Recap from a busy fight weekend that was full of upsets, brawls, a snoozer, and a few knockouts. If this last weekend was the climax of the 2013 year in boxing, then this coming weekend is one hell of a refractory period. It may feel as though we're on the bad side of a weekend letdown, but what it lacked in quality (in some ways), it made up for in unrelenting quantity. This week on Queensberry Rules Radio, James Foley of Bad Left Hook and Queensberry-Rules' Patrick Connor review Paul Malignaggi's win over Zab Judah, Guillermo Rigondeaux's domination of Joseph Agbeko, the Shawn Porter vs. Devon Alexander Clinchapalooza, the James Kirkland vs. Glen Tapia in-ring outburst, Felix Sturm's surprise stop of Darren Barker, and more. Also on the holiday platter is a preview of Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana, which will include Jesus Soto Karass vs. Keith Thurman. There's no let up this week, fans. Thanks for tuning in!
There's not much use for fancy language, metaphor or hyperbole as an intro here. Boxing had one hell of a nice week, and BadLeftHook.com's James Foley and Queensberry-Rules.com's Patrick Connor will be recapping just about everything there was: Jesus Soto Karass vs. Andre Berto, Zou Shiming vs. Jesus Ortega, Omar Figueroa vs. Nihito Arakawa, Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves, Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Milan Melindo, and a bunch more. Joining the usual suspects this week on the show is ring announcer Lupe Contreras. Thanks for tuning in! Twitter: James Foley - @therealFOL Patrick Connor - @Integrital
The doldrums are in the rear view mirror and greener pastures are fast approaching for us boxing psychotics. August, September and October are packed with bouts that feature serious names, and this weekend should be a welcome appetizer for the coming months. This week on Queensberry Rules Radio, James Foley of BadLeftHook.com and Patrick Connor of Queensberry-Rules.com are joined by Doug Fischer, associate editor of Ring Magazine and RingTV, in previewing Andre Berto vs. Jesus Soto-Karass, Omar Figueroa vs. Nihito Arakawa, Keith Thurman vs. Diego Chaves, Zou Shiming vs. Jesus Ortega, Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Milan Melindo, and so much more. Also visited should be the controversial stoppage of Malik Scott by Dereck Chisora from last weekend. Thanks for tuning in!
