On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and the award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell. We spoke with him by phone Sunday. While the coronavirus pandemic is still raging in many parts of the world, there nevertheless have been many notable fights involving top boxers in recent weeks. Among those fights we discussed were: Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Carlos Cuadras 2 and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez vs. Israel Gonzalez on October 23, and Naoya Inoue vs. Jason Moloney, Gervonta Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz, and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Derek Chisora, which were all on October 31. Estrada, he said, "may be the best technical fighter fighting today. He does everything beautifully." His opponent in their rematch, Cuadras, "is brilliantly talented." This exciting, even matchup, where the outcome was in doubt until the very end, made this "the best fight I've seen in the last couple of years," he said. The impressive knockouts on the same night by Naoya Inoue and Gervonta Davis have invited comparisons between the performances of these two boxers. "I thought Inoue was the fighter of the night," said Charles Farrell. "I'm impressed with Davis's performance, but I was impressed with Santa Cruz's performance, too." He added, "We already know that Davis can punch." But he cautioned, "I would say that, anybody that size who is hit with a punch like that, it would have the same effect. He'd knock them out cold. But I do think that some questions opened up that maybe we didn't have before." After discussing more on all these fights and the current state of boxing, we moved on to Charles Farrell's memoir, which is due out in June 2021. It is entitled "(Low)life: A Memoir of Jazz, Fight-Fixing, and The Mob". That led us into examining the connections between boxing, jazz, and the mob, and how boxing can only be understood as part of culture and not just a sport. All this discussion of these fight of the year and knockout of the year candidates, as well as what might happen in 2021 in boxing especially with the heavyweights, makes this lengthy show the boxing podcast of the year.

The year is closing out so strong they're making it tough to complain about what a wreck the rest has been. There's Chocolatito Gonzalez's win over Israel Gonzales and Juan Francisco Estrada's win over Carlos Cuadras last weekend, and then Naoya Inoue, Oleksandr Usyk, Gervonta Davis and Jaime Munguia are all featured this weekend. It's sickening. In a good way. Another contender for Fight of the Year in the form of Estrada-Cuadras deserves a deeper dive from Mike and Lance (1:00). The duo praise Juan Francisco Estrada in his TKO of Carlos Cuadras, who, himself, fought well, and gaze into the future at Chocolatito-Estrada II, which may be a squabble featuring two future hall of famers. Mike details what he saw from Lipinets-Clayton in their clash for the IBF interim welterweight title (8:00). Will Leo Santa Cruz pull off the upset over Gervonta Davis? Lance certainly believes so (10:00). Why will the 32-year-old come away victorious? Is there a secret to his potential success? How will he tackle Davis? 27-year-old rising star, Naoya Inoue, is set to make a splash in the U.S. against Jason Moloney at the MGM (16:30). Will Inoue finally make waves state-side? Could Moloney spoil the Japanese boxer's coming out party? Pug and Copp top off today's show previewing Usyk-Chisora (24:00).

HBO Boxing Insiders Eric Raskin and Kieran Mulvaney discuss the sensational SuperFly 2 card, from Srisaket Sor Rungvisai's narrow decision over Juan Francisco Estrada in a Fight-of-the-Year-caliber main event, to McWilliams Arroyo's surprising and hard-earned victory over Carlos Cuadras, to Donnie Nietes' emphatic destruction of Juan Carlos Reveco in his HBO debut.
This is a fight week for the real fans! For boxing fans, we look back at George Groves vs. Chris Eubank Jr., Ray Beltran living out his movie moment while winning a world title, Danny Swift Garcia cleaning up Brandon Rios, and David Benavidez continuing his march forward, then we look forward to SuperFly 2's Srisaket Sor Rungvisai taking on El Gallo Estrada with Carlos Cuadras on the undercard, and the WBSS's Callum Smith taking on kickboxing phenom Nieky Holzken. For MMA fans, we recap Mitrione vs. Roy Nelson in Bellator, before hopping over and talking through James Vick vs. Francisco Trinaldo and Cowboy Cerrone vs. Yancy Medeiros. We finish up by looking ahead to Josh Emmett vs. Jeremy Stephens and the title eliminator of Tecia Torres vs. Jessica Andrade.
Between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin and last week's #SuperFly card, boxing fans had had it made in the last week or so. The over-saturation of the recent Mayweather-McGregor mockery stole all the attention from the boxing that mattered, unfortunately, but it won't keep dedicated fans from recognizing what's important. We've lusted after this Canelo-Golovkin pairing for a while now, and the middleweight clash has all the potential in the world. All that's left now is to sit back and enjoy -- after listening to this episode! But wait! There's more: we would be awful people if we didn't sing the praises of Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Roman Gonzalez, Naoya Inoue, Antonio Nieves, Juan Francisco Estrada and Carlos Cuadras. They all contributed to a fine HBO card last weekend and it needs to be said. Many fight fans and pundits have called for more dedication to the lighter weight classes among the TV Networks and fight honchos. This weekend on HBO, they're getting what they asked for as 115-pound fighters from Nicaragua, Thailand, Japan, the U.S. and Mexico are all featured. A rematch between Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez headlines the card, but clashes between Naoya Inoue and Antonio Nieves, and Carlos Cuadras and Juan Francisco Estrada, truly make this a hardcore fan's card. This week on Knuckles and Gloves Boxing Radio, author and filmmaker Brin-Jonathan Butler joins boxing historian and site founder Patrick Connor to preview it all. There may even be a visit from a special guest. Follow us on Twitter! Roman Gonzalez seeks to get back his title. Juan Estrada vs. Carlos Cuadras and "The Monster" Inoue gets his first fight in the U.S.
There's plenty of boxing on tap to keep boxing fans and media busy, but the first order of business this weekend is the middleweight skirmish between Gennady Golovkin vs Daniel Jacobs. For some, this fight represents the first time Golovin has faced a puncher skilled enough to meet the Kazakh's fire with fire of his own. But others believe Jacobs will wind up simply becoming another victim of Golovkin's ferocity. Though it may not be deserving of Pay-Per-View, it's a competitive fight on paper and will almost certainly end early. It may be worth spending a few clams to catch Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez in action, however, as he takes on Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on the PPV undercard. But also on the menu for Brin-Jonathan Butler and Patrick Connor is the awful knockout David Lemieux scored on Curtis Stevens last weekend. Follow us on Twitter! We been a lot of emails on leaveitinthering@gmail.com about the size difference between Saul Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and the catch-weight who has the advantage ? Lots of talk about Miguel Cotto v Juan Manuel Marquez facing each other later this year in 2017 . The questions asked are at what weight ? Where will the fight take place and who has the star power to demand terms ? Roman Chocolatito Gonzalez is he avoiding Carlos Cuadras who gave him fits ?
World Championship Boxing is back with a fight recap show covering 3 recent bouts. Gennady Golovkin vs Kell Brook (from Sat 9/10/16) Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez vs Carlos Cuadras (from Sat 9/10/16) Canelo Alvarez v Liam Smith (from Sat 9/17/16)
When it comes to Gennady Golovkin and Roman Gonzalez's upcoming fights, we could say, and quite fairly, that neither fighter is facing the opponent most of us would wish he'd face. Blame whoever you want for it, but we would certainly prefer fights against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Juan Francisco Estrada, respectively. That being said, with what we're being given on HBO this weekend, there's still not much to complain about. Golovkin and Gonzalez are clearly the most potent one-two combination in boxing today. Both men are among the best fighters in the world, and in Gonzalez's case, perhaps the best fighter alive. Neither opponent -- Kell Brook for Golovkin, Carlos Cuadras for Gonzalez -- is anything but world class. We'll just have to see what they can do. Additionally, join Compubox operator Aris Pina and Patrick Connor of The Fight City and elsewhere in remembering Bobby Chacon, as well as discussing great middleweight vs welterweight matchups in boxing history.
