On Humans
48 | Is War Natural After All? ~ Luke Glowacki

On Humans

Our ancestors did not wage war. Warfare emerged only when humans started settling down and storing food. Indeed, some modern hunter-gatherers still enjoy the peaceful existence that once was the natural state of our species. Or so argued Douglas P. Fry, my guest in episode 8. I found many of his arguments convincing. For example, ancient cave art is surprisingly void of depictions of warfare. You can hear many more of his arguments in that episode, titled "Is War Natural For Humans?" But not all scholars agree. Far from it. And I owe a voice to the other side of the debate. So here is an episode with one of the most thoughtful voices arguing for a deeper origins of war. Luke Glowacki is a professor of anthropology at Boston University, where teaches courses on the evolution of war. And he believes that war has very ancient origins, indeed. We had a very stimulating conversation, discussing topics such as: (03:00) The debate: What can we all agree on? And what are the disagreements? (12:10) Hunter-gatherers: Are they peaceful? And are they any good as models of the past? (25:55) Archaeology: Cave paintings and broken bones (34:55) Primatology: Chimpanzees and bonobos (46:40) Implications: What can we learn from all this? As always, we finish with my guest's reflections on humanity. LINKS Head here for links to relevant academic articles -- and the video of the chimpanzee raid! Tune in to an animated discussion about parenting and how we might be messing it up. Jamie and I covered much ground today, from gentle parenting techniques to potty training.  Let me know what resonated with you the most.  What We Talked About: Why gentle parenting might have gone too far Jamie's need to share her potty training technique with parents What is the proper way to go about helping children through tough emotions? Modern parenting, the impact of overparenting, and how parents can course-correct. The importance of giving children the tools to solve their problems The balance between acknowledging children's emotions and not over-attending to every feeling. The benefits of slowing down and simplifying life Things to Remember “Parenting is not a skill. It's a relationship.” “We have so much information that parents think they can get the perfect solution to raise a happy child, but there is no perfect solution. You have to parent the child in front of you, and that will be different for every person.” “We are over-parenting in this way of intervening on every single behalf.” “In some situations, we have to let kids figure it out.” “We've got to let our kids go back to neighborhood play.” “Once we bring in the internet, you're letting the entire world into your house.” “What is exhausting a lot of parents right now, is over attending to every emotion.” “Potty training is not a measurement of your parenting.” -Jamie Glowacki   Click here for the show notes and extra resources.

Love doves and party pirates, What is money? How about currency? What facilitates exchange? What makes a market? How do we store value over time? These are but a few of the philosophical inquiries friend of the show Jonathan Glowacki and I dive into in this far-ranging and free-flowing Saunacast conversation. After tackling these broader themes, we zoom into the modern era and discuss the  benefits, as well as address certain misconceptions and oft-cited potential drawbacks to cryptocurrency generally and Bitcoin specifically. Bitcoin is digital money, but it's not a Central Bank-backed Digital Currency (CBDC). It's backed by energy, but does it really use too much power? Are green frog skin dollar bills backed by rainbows and sunshine? Nope: they're backed by blood. Would you rather use a soft (freely printed) inflationary money backed by the war machine or a hard (scarce + immutable) money backed by a software protocol and energy?  Hope this chat serves to crack open some minds and shake up some preconceptions. This is certainly not financial advice, but as a DIY researcher I've found it fascinating to decrypt the intentionally and artificially opaque and convoluted universe of money, markets and finance. He studies the evolution of complex social behavior, including cooperation and war. Dr. Glowacki has done extensive fieldwork among nomadic pastoralists along the Ethiopian / South Sudanese border studying inter-ethnic violence.   In this episode, we talk about the evolution of war, and human cooperation. We start by defining war, and we go through the main sources used to study its origins, including animal models, archaeological evidence, and contemporary traditional societies. We tackle the myth that ancestral populations did not have anything to fight over or were too egalitarian to wage war, and also the myth that nomadic societies did not make peace. We discuss the main points of disagreement between the deep-rooters and the shallow-rooters, the best evidence and arguments from both sides, and the epistemic and moral implications of the debate. We then talk about large-scale cooperation in small-scale societies, and the main costs and benefits of intergroup cooperation and aggression. Finally, we discuss if peace is easy to maintain, and the role of key individuals in coalitional conflict. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA- ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. My friend Jamie Glowacki is a badass mother. In the rainbow tapestry of influences on my parenting style, Jamie is one of the gorgeous threads. We met over five years ago, when she was a client for another marketing agency I worked with. At that time, she was the foremost respected expert on... drumroll please... potty training. Now, Jamie is an internationally recognized parenting expert. She's the author of the best selling books Oh Crap Potty Training and Oh Crap I Have a Toddler. It turns out that her former careers as circus performer and social worker make her uniquely qualified to deal with toddlers... and poop. And... as her work grew, she realized unhealed trauma in parents vastly affects parenting. She's now committed to helping parents heal that trauma through some pretty unconventional healing modalities. Jamie and I have always had some fun parallels. When I was moving to Costa Rica, she decided to buy a house in the exact community I moved to. We both play and work in the realm of plant medicine and psychedelics. We are both total renegade mamas, navigating the shift from old school to new paradigm parenting. She's got a son, Pascal, much older than my Indy, but who reminds me of what my son could be like as he matures into a young man. We went deep on boundaries, transparent communication with our children, and the importance of healing our trauma. Jamie's in-your-face insight is both empathic and confronting. Check 'er out... J., Trajlinek, J., ACERBO, E., Botzanowski, B., Cassara, A., Neufeld, E., Glowacki, E. D., Shangold, L., Hanes, W. M., Williamson, A. Abstract: Peripheral nerve stimulation is used in both clinical and fundamental research for therapy and exploration. At present, non-invasive peripheral nerve stimulation still lacks the penetration depth to reach deep nerve targets and the stimulation focality to offer selectivity. It is therefore rarely employed as the primary selected nerve stimulation method. We have previously demonstrated that a new stimulation technique, Temporal Interference (TI) stimulation, can overcome depth and focality issues. Here, we implement a novel form of TI, bilateral TI (bTI) stimulation, for bilateral hypoglossal nerve stimulation in rodents and humans. Pairs of electrodes are placed alongside both hypoglossal nerves to stimulate them synchronously and thus decrease the stimulation amplitude required to activate hypoglossal-nerve-controlled tongue movement. Comparing bTI stimulation with unilateral TI stimulation, we show that it can elicit the same behavioral and electrophysiological responses at a reduced stimulation amplitude. Traditional transcutaneous stimulation evokes no response with equivalent amplitudes of stimulation. During first-in-man studies, TI stimulation was found to be well-tolerated, and to clinically reduce apnea-hypopnea events in a subgroup of female patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These results suggest a high clinical potential for the use of TI in the treatment of OSA and other diseases as a safe, effective, and patient-friendly approach. What's up to my quintessential quetzals and meritorious margays! Welcome to the BNP beloved listeners and thanks so much for tuning in. This episode I'm joined by my good friend, hermano de otra madre, and traveling compatriot Jonathan Glowacki to discuss, reminisce and digest our recent travails thru the magnificent country of Guatemala. This episode is momentous for several reasons, not the least of which is that it features the BNP's first ever Saunacast, where Jonathan and I record a deeply psychedelic segment during the 4th round of a serious sauna sesh at over 200° F (94° C). My trusty moderately intelligent rare earth device lasted about 10 minutes before succumbing to the heat and abruptly cutting off the segment. Still, it's a vibe. Jonathan then tells the harrowing tale of his highly unregulated, nearly fatal motorcycle tour thru the dusty roads and precipitous cliffs of the Guatemalan highlands, and that reminiscence leads to a discussion of what makes Guatemalan society hit so different from life in the empire. Two differences in societal approach really stand out: approaches to mitigating (or rather NOT mitigating) risk, and the lack of slavish adherence to this demonic thing we empire babies call "convenience." Convenience for convenience's sake is a curse, not a blessing, and spending time in a place like Guatemala really drives this home. Trish Glowacki is a filmmaker, writer and songwriter. Her first musical, WARNING: Take Only As Directed, was adapted to the screen. The award-winning film has proven to be an innovative and effective tool for teaching teens, their educators, parents and guardians about the dangers of prescription medicine misuse. Trish launched glowmedia in 2016 and is making a series of short films, based on the Warning model, addressing a broad range of mental health issues. In November 2011, Trish lost her 21-year old son, Charlie, after a five-year battle with anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Charlie died of an accidental Oxycontin overdose. In the wake of Charlie's passing, the family searched for ways to both handle the incredible grief and honor their beloved son's memory. Trish, an accomplished musician and thespian, set out to write songs and a play about Charlie. In the process of writing and researching, she realized a larger vision for his legacy. The growing opioid crisis had just started to reach a national consciousness. Overdoses have quadrupled since 1991 and the crisis has penetrated both rural and urban communities, crossing ethnic and socio-economic boundaries. Armed with a powerful story and an urgency to educate youth nationwide, Trish decided to adapt her play into a short film musical that could be used as a unique teaching resource. The goal was to produce a high-quality short film and disseminate it to as many middle and high school classrooms as possible. Leveraging her extensive contacts in the music and film industries, Trish enlisted studio musicians, hired a film director and production company, and co-wrote the screenplay. The 26-minute film, Warning: Take Only as Directed, premiered in 2014 and soon after was added to Discovery Education, the nation's largest provider of digital educational content. To date, the film has been viewed by over a million students nationwide. The film comes with free resource guides and lesson plans. These materials facilitate classroom conversation and enhance understanding of the film content. The overwhelming success of this film inspired the Glowacki family to focus on other sensitive issues facing today' s youth. In 2016, they created a 501c3 organization, the glowmedia project, and started fundraising for the development of a series of new films that, like Warning, seek to build awareness and reduce stigma around various challenges affecting teenagers. Three new short films, co-written by Trish and Andrea Hansell, Ph.D., a licensed clinical child and adolescent psychologist, were released in 2017. These films focus on eating disorders/body image, anxiety and depression, and LGBTQ+ topics. Similar to Warning: Take Only as Directed, these shorts integrate music, realistic characters and dialogue, and authentic storylines. They also come with educational materials, created by experts in the field. The fifth film, addressing bipolar disorder, King of the World, was released in 2020. The pandemic brought new projects to a halt, but they were able to produce a documentary about the effects of the pandemic on the mental health of teens, Unimaginable, which will be released this fall. With pandemic restrictions lifted, they were able to film their seventh short, addressing suicide prevention, There Can Be Light, in May. That film will premiere this fall in select cities in October (L.A. on 10/1 and Silver Spring, MD's American Film Institute on 10/12), and be released in early 2023. ASymba: HI global profile asymmetries in the Simba simulation by M. Glowacki et al. on Tuesday 20 September Asymmetry in the spatially integrated, 1D HI global profiles of galaxies can inform us on both internal (e.g. outflows) and external (e.g. mergers, tidal interactions, ram pressure stripping) processes that shape galaxy evolution. Understanding which of these primarily drive HI profile asymmetry is of particular interest. In the lead-up to SKA pathfinder and SKA HI emission surveys, hydrodynamical simulations have proved to be a useful resource for such studies. Here we present the methodology behind, as well as first results, of ASymba: Asymmetries in HI of Simba galaxies, the first time this simulation suite has been used for this type of study. We generate mock observations of the HI content of these galaxies and calculate the profile asymmetries using three different methods. We find that $M_{rm HI}$ has the strongest correlation with all asymmetry measures, with weaker correlations also found with the number of mergers a galaxy has undergone, and gas and galaxy rotation. We also find good agreement with the xGASS sample, in that galaxies with highly asymmetric profiles tend to have lower HI gas fractions than galaxies with symmetric profiles, and additionally find the same holds in sSFR parameter space. For low HI mass galaxies, it is difficult to distinguish between asymmetric and symmetric galaxies, but this becomes achievable in the high HI mass population. These results showcase the potential of ASymba and provide the groundwork for further studies, including comparison to upcoming large HI emission surveys. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.09269v1

When your kiddos say goodbye to diapers, adventures look a whole lot different. Easier or harder? You decide! But there may be a period of time where you're adventuring with a toilet in tow, until they master the outdoor squat. Don't worry – you can still get outside, even in the learning-phase. We have expert Jamie Glowacki on today's podcast, to talk all things toddlers and poop!     Jamie Glowacki is an internationally recognized potty training and parenting expert. She is the author of both Oh Crap Potty Training and Oh Crap I Have a Toddler.     When to Start Potty Training:  “Wait until they are ready” is the biggest myth (tune in to learn why)  20 to 30 months is prime age, if not earlier   After 30 months, children get individuation, making the process much harder  Remember that using a toilet is socialized behaviour     How Much Time Is Needed to Stay Home to Focus on Learning the Toilet (and how can you also get outside):  Devote at least 4 days to staying home  Jamie's book is in blocks of learning, instead of specific time frames, as each child will progress differently  In desperate times, throw a diaper on for a hike or car ride if you need, just don't get too dependent on it, but STILL go outside  The outdoors and actions such as throwing, help release the pelvic floor, so it will actually help kids who are withholding, to release  Hike and adventure with a potty chair  Don't forget to have your kids wear two-piece everything!    Tip: A post-it note, or wet toilet paper, over automatic-flush sensors will stop toilet from automatically flushing when a little one is sitting on it    Follow Jamie at:  IG: @jamie.glowacki  Website: https://www.jamieglowacki.com/homepage    Check out KWE's #patch4apurpose to support 1, or all 8, charities: https://kidswhoexplore.com/product/original-explorer-patch4apurpose/    Today's Host: @laurenrodycheberle from @kidswhoexplore  Production: @kpmediaproductions.
