Gervonta Davis Is Undisputed Champ & Yeezy Is Fashion Genius | Divij's Den | Ep. 49 DIVIJ (@divijvaswani) • Instagram photos and videos Christian Yi (@christianyi_) • Instagram photos and videos NEW YORK -- Madonna. Michael Strahan. Tracy Morgan. Every time Gervonta Davis fights, the stars come out in droves. Saturday's lightweight event at Barclays Center was no different, as 18,970 people were in attendance to see "Tank" Davis send Rolando Romero crashing into the ropes for yet another highlight-reel finish with a sixth-round TKO. Davis proved once again he is one of the biggest stars in boxing. Barclays Center in Brooklyn? Sold out. His December fight versus Isaac Cruz at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles? Another packed house. No matter what city, no matter whom he faces, Davis has left no doubt he is one of the sport's most bankable athletes. Now, it's time for him to step up and fight one of the elite at 135 pounds, the weight class Davis said after Saturday's bout is his most comfortable. There's whomever emerges from next week's bout between George Kambosos Jr. and Devin Haney for the undisputed championship. The problem is, if Haney wins, Kambosos is entitled to an immediate rematch. But the biggest bout of them all at 135 pounds? Ryan Garcia. The win over Romero was the final bout of Davis' multifight deal with Mayweather Promotions. Tank indicated in the lead-up he is likely to part ways with Floyd Mayweather, who has been his promoter since 2015, in favor of the sort of flexibility Canelo Alvarez enjoys as a free agent. That would certainly remove any obstacles -- or excuses -- when it comes to pursuing the sort of high-level opponents Davis should be seeking. "He's been protected," Romero told ESPN on Wednesday. "Let's go down Gervonta's résumé from the time he won a world title. [Jose] Pedraza, weight-drained 130-pounder. Liam Walsh, chinny, weak U.K. fighter. Francisco Fonseca, who [Davis] hit behind the head and knocked him out in the eighth round. "Ryan Garcia knocked [Fonseca] out in one round like nothing. ... [Yuriorkis] Gamboa, who had both [Davis'] eyes shut. Then he fought [Leo] Santa Cruz, who's a 118-pounder who moved up to 126 then to 130 as a favor to [advisor] Al Haymon." Of course, Romero was being overly critical ahead of the fight, but he does make some salient points. Davis' best win to date remains that 2017 TKO of Pedraza to win his first title. Regardless of opposition, the talent is obvious. And on Saturday, Davis (27-0, 25 KOs) showed a new layer with the kind of patient strategy he employed round after round in the face of a dangerous puncher. He picked his shots. He held on when he felt Romero's power. It was a mature performance from an ever-growing fighter. "I know when to take it to my opponents and when to chill out," Davis, 27, said. "There was someone in the crowd ... and they were telling me to press forward, and I was like, 'Not yet. I got to loosen him up a little more.'"

Dubb D questions why in the black community, doing or engaging in things that aren't considered part of the "black" lifestyle are often side-eyed, while Magenta shares a personal experience with lies and the opposite sex. No Holds Barred: Charles Farrell on Boxing's Stars of the Lighter Weights

No Holds Barred with Eddie Goldman

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with our colleague, correspondent, and the award-winning boxing writer, Charles Farrell. We spoke with him by phone Sunday. While the coronavirus pandemic is still raging in many parts of the world, there nevertheless have been many notable fights involving top boxers in recent weeks. Among those fights we discussed were: Juan Francisco Estrada vs. Carlos Cuadras 2 and Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez vs. Israel Gonzalez on October 23, and Naoya Inoue vs. Jason Moloney, Gervonta Davis vs. Leo Santa Cruz, and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Derek Chisora, which were all on October 31. Estrada, he said, "may be the best technical fighter fighting today. He does everything beautifully." His opponent in their rematch, Cuadras, "is brilliantly talented." This exciting, even matchup, where the outcome was in doubt until the very end, made this "the best fight I've seen in the last couple of years," he said. The impressive knockouts on the same night by Naoya Inoue and Gervonta Davis have invited comparisons between the performances of these two boxers. "I thought Inoue was the fighter of the night," said Charles Farrell. "I'm impressed with Davis's performance, but I was impressed with Santa Cruz's performance, too." He added, "We already know that Davis can punch." But he cautioned, "I would say that, anybody that size who is hit with a punch like that, it would have the same effect. He'd knock them out cold. But I do think that some questions opened up that maybe we didn't have before." After discussing more on all these fights and the current state of boxing, we moved on to Charles Farrell's memoir, which is due out in June 2021. It is entitled "(Low)life: A Memoir of Jazz, Fight-Fixing, and The Mob". That led us into examining the connections between boxing, jazz, and the mob, and how boxing can only be understood as part of culture and not just a sport. All this discussion of these fight of the year and knockout of the year candidates, as well as what might happen in 2021 in boxing especially with the heavyweights, makes this lengthy show the boxing podcast of the year.
