Episode #357: Angelo Leo is a professional boxer from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the current IBF featherweight world champion. Trained by his father David Leo, he turned professional in 2012, won the WBO super-bantamweight title in 2020 against Tramaine Williams, and lost it in his first defense to Stephen Fulton in 2021—his only career defeat. After moving to 126 pounds, Leo captured the IBF featherweight title in August 2024 with a knockout win over Luis Alberto Lopez and defended it in May 2025 against Tomoki Kameda by majority decision. He currently holds a record of 26–1 (12 KOs) and is scheduled to defend the IBF title in early 2026 in Albuquerque. In this episode, Leo participates in a conversation covering his journey in the sport. The Albuquerque, New Mexico native discusses his upcoming title defense against Lerat Diamini, and shares his thoughts on the current featherweight world champions and the state of the 126-pound division. He reflects on winning the IBF belt in Japan, and reflects on his defeat to Stephen Fulton. Leo also talks about a past training-camp visit from Floyd Mayweather, his conversations with Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Márquez, and the challenges of navigating the early part of his career without a manager amid promotional difficulties. Additional topics include his experience fighting abroad, adjustments made since becoming champion, and what lies ahead in one of boxing's most competitive divisions.-------------------- Find all things The Last Round Boxing Podcast -------------------- All Show Links
In this show, we are talking about last night's fight card. We start with a hot-button topic of the three major fighters who have been champions and retained their position atop of the sport, which journey have you enjoyed the most: David Benavidez, Devin Haney or Jesse "Bam" RodriguezWe will also break down Benavidez win over Anthony Yarde, Haney defeating Brian Norman Jr, and "Bam" defeating Fernando Martinez. Also, we talk about what might be the "Fight of the Year" as Abdullah Mason wins the WBO lightweight title over Sam Noakes in a modern classic, that might have been too good to be a vacant title fight. Also, we talk about Mizuki Hiruta, who made her sixth title defense of her WBO junior bantamweight women's title, and Francisco Veron, who defeated Roiman Villa on ProBox TV. This week, we have two marquee cards. On Saturday, Lukie will be on-site in Fresno for the ProBox TV. He gives a detailed explanation of why you should watch Justin Pauldo, Charlie Sheehy, Karlos Balderas, and many others involved. In the U.K., on Saturday, light heavyweight Ben Whittaker makes his Matchroom debut. It's a special mid-week edition of the podcast, as host T.J. Rives is back with special guests around the "Ring IV- Night of Champions" ppv card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Both Saadeq Ahmed (who covered the card live) and Managing Editor for Big Fight Weekend.com, Ricky Carroll are aboard for their perspectives and analysis. The guys talk in order:Saadeq sharing the bizaare' timeline for the show, that saw the main event happen at after 5am Saudi time early into Sunday a.m. The guys also go over the fights starting with Abdul Mason's power punching win over Sam Noakes for the WBO lightweight crown. Mason is on the rise and at 21 years old is boxing's youngest world champ. So, what's in store for him?Next, it was a huge night for Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez to become unified at 115 lb. with a domination of Fernando Martinez for 8 rounds and then flattened him for good with a big left hook in the 9th for the KO. Is Bam deserving of a top 5 pound for pound grade?Continuing, Saadeq gives more insight on how the Bam fight took some life out of the building and even though he was in control with a second round knock down, Devin Haney couldn't overwhelm WBO welterweigh champ, Brian Norman. So, it was a little unsatisfying, even though the still unbeaten Haney was much better than the champ and got the decision win. And, finally, David Benavidez made easy work out of Anthony Yarde by brutally pounding him over 7 rounds and eventual TKO stoppage. Benavide wants curiserweight unfied champ, Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramires, next in Las Vegas in May. We'll see if it happens?Hear from our guys on the "Fight Freaks Unite Recap" on this Big Fight Weekend Podcast" feed and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple/Spreaker/Spotify!
