Investors vs. Bootstrapped: How to Choose the Right Path For Your Startup w/ Jim Semick

Getting investors or bootstrapping? That's one of the hardest decisions founders have to make. On one hand, raising capital has many benefits - you have a longer runway, more resources, and more cash to hire people and pay them well. It provides enough cash to get through the competitive hurdles to bring your product to market.  But outside capital comes with strings attached and having to please others and conform your business to the expectations of investors. That's why many founders choose not to go down the path of raising money and deliberately decide to bootstrap instead.  While it means you're operating in a resource-constrained environment, you get to retain more control and flexibility in the long-run. Bootstrapping your business means you have to be scrappy and do things a little differently, but it can work.  What are the things you need to stay on top of when you're bootstrapping? Why is product validation so important? How do you determine which funding model works for you?  In this episode, I'm joined by speaker, angel investor and founder of Product Plan, Jim Semick. He shares why he chose to bootstrap instead of taking the venture capital route and how to self-fund successfully.  Topics Covered; How to stay on top of your finances in a bootstrapped business Why it's critical to validate your product first  How to hire and pay developers as a bootstrapped business  Low-cost marketing strategies that don't need a lot of capital The value of having co-founder with complementary skills The right time to bring on an outside CEO   Guest Bio Jim Semick is a Product Management Expert, speaker, leader, angel investor and founder of Product Plan. Jim Semick works for more than 20 years in Product Management. About 8 years ago he was looking for the next big challenge in his life. He quit his full-time job with two kids and no clear business idea. What he had back then was a great and motivated co-founder as well as the vision to make Product Managers' lives easier. In this episode, Jim talks about the importance of having a clear vision of how to build a company with your co-founder before you even have a business idea. Next to that, Jim shared what he did to identify a problem that was worth solving which later translated into his company ProductPlan. Jim Semick "We interviewed more than 30 product managers before we wrote a single line of code. I recommend startups begin by interviewing at least 10 prospective customers to understand the problems their specific market is facing. In those interviews, you may not even talk about your product. In fact, you shouldn't. You're not pitching a product at this stage. You're simply trying to understand a day in the life of your customer." Jim Semick is the co-founder and Chief Strategist of ProductPlan. Previously, Jim was part of the founding team at AppFolio. He also helped launch GoToMeeting, GoToMyPC, and GoToWebinar. Jim is a sought-after speaker, and writes about product management, business models, and entrepreneurship. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theindustryshow/support

Recently the ProductPlan team released their eBook From Product Manager to Product Leader - Lessons from today's product experts and I really enjoyed it. One of the things I speak a lot about on the Product Coach podcast is how to be a Product Leader and this book really dives into a lot of detail about it and on this podcast Jim Semick from ProductPlan helps us dissect the lessons from the book. As the book says: "While there are many reasons products might succeed, it's the direction of great product leadership that truly makes a difference." I couldn't agree more. Enjoy the episode and The Product Leadership book can be downloaded from: https://www.productplan.com/lp/product-leadership-book/Enjoy it and feel free to drop me a line and let me know what you think. All the best on your product journey, Ross Webb, The Product Coach

Bootstrapping instead of raising capital. On one hand, you can retain control and can set your own course. On the other, the luxury of capital gives you the resources to add features, hire more engineers and grow quicker. But maybe capital limitations can actually help you create a more focused product. This week on Product Love, I sat down and talked to Jim Semick, founder of Product Plan, about bootstrapping a startup, key metrics for product managers and how to approach pricing.
