We rarely get to hear Joel Potrykus talk about himself as an actor. The independent filmmaker of such beloved low-budget treasures as “Ape,” “Buzzard,” and “Relaxer” says he has, in fact, never talked about it. In his latest, “Vulcanizadora,” he once again co-stars with the man he loves to point his camera at, Joshua Burge. The two reprise their roles of Derek and Marty exactly ten years after they birthed those characters in “Buzzard.” On this episode, Potrykus explains the decision to take on the role in both films, why he loves working with the “machine” that is Burge, the part of directing actors he likes the least, how the end of “Field of Dreams” helped his acting process, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

When extraterrestrial contact mixes with a commune environment, what usually occurs isn't considered healthy. The commune usually turns into something more, specifically a cult. Individuality and freedoms fade away and connection with family and old friends dissolves. The new film, COSMIC DAWN (2022) from Canada, gives us a tale that is both a science fiction story of first contact but also the harm of what cults may be. Aurora (Camille Rowe) has fled from an alien abduction cult four years earlier. When she was a child her mother disappeared where she believed the woman was abducted by the greys. As she got older, she found a group of similar folk led by Elyse (Antonia Zegers) and soon fell into their sect. After tragic events, she was able to escape but is still haunted by both them and the fear of being once more found. Director Jefferson Moneo also wrote the film. The cast includes Camille Rowe, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Antonia Zegers, Joshua Burge, Miho Suzuki, and Philip Granger. Released earlier this year, the Dark Discussions crew decided to take a look at the movie and give their thoughts and discuss the film's many topics.

Actor Joshua Burge joins Craig and Bennett for a talk about Buster Keaton's career and legacy, 'Cops' and 'The Cook.' Following their recent interview together, Split Toother Bennett Glace and actor/musician Joshua Burge join Craig Wright to discuss a mutual favorite actor and director, Buster Keaton. One of the all-time great comedians, Keaton redefined what it means to construct a visual gag. Here they compare The Cook (1918), an early Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle collaboration, with Cops (1920), a classic Keaton-directed short film. They contrast Buster's work as Arbuckle's sidekick with his game-changing style in front of and behind the camera, and put his films in conversation with his rival Charlie Chaplin's. They also venture into Buster's life, career, and evolving legacy and, of course, why spaghetti is such a compelling film prop.

The actor & Filmwax Radio friend Joshua Burge ("The Revenant", "20th Century Women") is back on the show to shoot the breeze during the early days of quarantining. Joshua last appeared on the podcast on with the team from "Relaxer", one of several films he starred in directed by podcast regular Joel Potrykus.
Joel Potrykus, DP Adam J. Minnick, and actors Joshua Burge and Andre Hyland sit down with us to explain how they became collaborators, how they made Relaxer, and why making films for yourself is the only way to go.
Since 2012, Joel Potrykus has arguably become one of the most successful and unusual independent film directors to ever emerge out of Michigan and land on the global cinema stage. Despite all of his success, Joel says he “doesn’t enjoy the process of making a movie.” Doesn’t that seem like a weird thing for a film director to say? Maybe…but not after you listen to this episode. Joel and I take a deep dive into his filmmaking and writing process, why he makes films in Grand Rapids when he doesn’t have to, why he thinks of his tight-knit and frequent film collaborators function as more of a band than a production company, as well as the many reasons he loves casting the incredibly talented Joshua Burge as the lead actor in many of his films. Joel’s previous films Ape, Buzzard and The Alchemist Cookbook all established him as a genius writer & director of odd, offbeat and campy films. The tone and style of his films caught the attention of, and quickly forged a business and creative relationship with famed independent film studio, Oscilloscope Laboratories, which was founded by the late Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys fame. But it’s his latest film, Relaxer, that is kicking everything up a few more notches for Joel Potrykus. Its time to look at one of the most defining films of the past decade, IMO. It is Buzzard. Directed by Joel Potrykus and starring Joshua Burge. It has been a Podcast for Two People favorite ever since we were made aware of it. Why don't you let us tell you why that is? Joshua Burge is an Actor known for Buzzard, The Revenant, 20th Century Women and Relaxer.
Joel Potrykus' Relaxer is an odd film to pin down - it's a slacker movie, a dark millennial comedy, a gruesome work of body horror, a harrowing interpersonal sibling drama, and a million other things. But the tale of a layabout twentysomething (a haunting Joshua Burge) stuck to a grimy leather couch, resolving to not eat, drink, sleep or get up until he reaches Level 256 of Pac-Man, on the cusp of the new millennium, is uniquely gut-wrenching in surprising ways. (You can read our review of Relaxer here.) A movie like this requires either no explanation or heaps of it, so we got Potrykus on the line to talk about the origins of the project, working with his muse Joshua Burge, the freedom (and restrictions) of filming in a single locked-down apartment, and more.
