Another year has wrapped production, and the production assistants are here to clean up! Just in time for the 2023 Oscars, Ben, Wilson, and Eli mop up the mess left by superheroes and conductors, stop motion shells and Na'vi, interdimensional travelers and cannibals, mourners and partiers. By breaking down the year's big trends–– directors fictionalizing their autobiographies, Marvel sinking slowly, rich filmmakers attempting to pillory wealth inequality–– the Deep Cut trio gets a handle on what made 2022 so weird. The boys get personal, too, talking about the movies and moments from last year that shaped who they are as moviegoers and friends. Finally, each co-host's coveted top 3 films of the year are revealed… Dunk on the Oscars with us in our Discord server. Keep up with Deep Cut on Instagram, Facebook, and Letterboxd. The mission of Monsters Aliens Robots Zombies (MARZ) is to deliver feature-film quality visual effects on television timelines by harnessing GPU clusters, game engine technology, AI and senior industry talent. Leveraging these pillars allows us to consistently execute with both speed and quality for our premium television projects. Lon Molnar is the Co-President of MARZ. With more than 20 years of experience, Lon has contributed a vast amount of visual effects to film and television as an Artist, VFX Supervisor, and former CEO of the award winning VFX company Intelligent Creatures. Inspired by the magic of TOY STORY, Lon attended the Vancouver Film School with the single goal of opening up his own VFX studio. As he built his resume, he became dissatisfied with working on VFX for tv, and set his sights on feature films. He became a VFX generalist, working in animation, lighting, compositing and modelling, while using a vast array of software. After serving as the CG Supervisor on the groundbreaking films CHICAGO and THE CELL, he fulfilled his earlier dream and opened up Intelligent Creatures in 2002. Working with talented creators like Mark Forster, Darren Aronofsky, Alejandro González Iñárritu, David Tattersall, Oliver Stone and others, Lon quickly built the Toronto-based VFX house into an award-winning studio. Intelligent Creatures lent its creativity to dozens of projects such as MR AND MRS SMITH, THE WITCH, and BABEL. They built robust pipelines to tackle critically-acclaimed projects, such as the WATCHMEN's famous Rorschach mask of moving inkblots. Some of their later work, such as the award-winning series ORPHAN BLACK and the Emmy-nominated CURIOSITY: BATTLEFIELD CELL pushed the boundaries of visual effects on TV. Fifteen years after the formation of Intelligent Creatures, Lon recognized that unlike when he had started in the industry, TV was no longer the "lesser" medium for VFX. When he spoke to Jonathan Bronfman, the two found themselves sharing symbiotic ideas. They saw a gap that others didn't. What if, they asked, we can build a company that focuses on serving only one market, and defines the standard of excellence in that market? That was the beginning of MARZ. In this Podcast, Allan McKay interviews Co-President of MARZ Lon Molnar about the company's history and leveraging its technology innovations; the invisible visual effects and the development of the de-aging technology; positive outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of VFX an so much more! Mexican-born filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu talks to John Wilson about his cultural influences. Iñárritu's movies are often epic in scale and ambition. He made his name with the Mexican gangland drama Amores Perros, and won critical acclaim with his next two Hollywood movies; 21 Grams and Babel. His 2015 black comedy Birdman won him three of his five Academy Awards - for best film, best director and best screenplay. He picked up another Oscar the following year for the brutal 19th century frontiersman drama The Revenant and was awarded a Special Achievement Academy Award for his virtual reality installation Carne y Arena in 2017. His most recent movie is Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths an epic dream-like, semi-autobiographical black comedy-drama, which he co-wrote, co-composed, edited, produced, and directed. Iñárritu reveals how working on cargo ships as a teenager later influenced the global scope of his filmmaking, and recalls his early career in the 80s and early 90s as a popular radio DJ in Mexico City. He talks about the powerful effect that the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet had on him. This collection of ten letters, published posthumously at the turn of the 20th century, advise developing a rich inner life in order to make great art, words that made a big impression on the aspiring filmmaker Iñárritu. He also discusses his love for the work of Italian film director Sergio Leone, and in particular his 1984 epic crime film Once Upon a Time in America. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Very excited about our latest guest on Soundtracking - the Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu Alejandro's latest offering is Bardo: False Chronicle Of A Handful Of Truths - a semi-autobiographical tale that follows a journalist & documentarian who returns to his native country of Mexico and begins having an existential crisis in the form of dreamlike visions. Silverio Gama (Daniel Gimenez Cacho) is a multi-hyphenate. Not only is he an acclaimed journalist and documentarian, he also finds himself caught between multiple identities. Is it more likely he's just something else entirely? This labyrinthine odyssey through his psyche, insecurities and idiosyncrasies is what BARDO follows, and man, I can't use the term "fever dream" as a higher compliment. When drummer Antonio Sanchez released his album Bad Hombre back in 2017, he was responding to a few events that took place in his world at the same time. On a political level, the music was a response to the racism of the Trump campaign against Mexicans. In fact the title of the record Bad Hombre seemed to be an answer to Trump's assertion that a wall needed to be built at the US Mexican border in order to get the “bad hombres” out of the US. An immigrant from Mexico himself, Sanchez reappropriated the phrase. Itseemed, in fact, to be a perfect fit for him because not only did it work as a form of resistance - by using the term he made his feelings clear without having to say too much about it - but it also borrowed from the jazz vernacular. You know, when musicians really respect someone, they will often refer to them as “bad”. And in that context, Antonio Sanchez is definitely a bad hombre. Sanchez moved to the US in his early 20s from his native Mexico to go to music school. One of his first teachers, the Panamanian born Danilo Perez, was a supporter, and their work together was one of the early launchpads for Antonio. While he was playing with Danilo, the guitarist Pat Metheny heard him, and that led to a musical relationship that has been at the center of his life for 20 years. Sanchez went on to become one of the most sought-after drummers on the international jazz scene. Has won four Grammys, and has been named Modern Drummer's "Jazz Drummer of the Year” three times, and appeared on the covers of all the big jazz magazines. From early on he thought about drumming, and particularly soloing, as a form of storytelling. He says “I'm a sucker for a good story.” So it was only a matter of time before some great storyteller would find a way to use Antonio Sanchez's drums to help tell a story. And that was exactly what happened when the Mexican film director Alejandro González Iñárritu asked Antonio to do an all drum score for his film Birdman in 2014. The film went on to win three academy awards and the score earned Antonio awards (including a Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media) and nominations at the Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards. As significant as the awards and accolades were, maybe more significant was that the sound of Antonio's drumming truly entered the zeitgeist after Birdman. And though he hadn't planned for it to turn out that way, he realized that the level of expectation, curiosity, and even pressure on him to follow up that success with something equally resonant had risen. So when in 2017 Antonio went into his newly built home studio to record Bad Hombre, he had a lot of psychic energy stored up and ready to use. He made an entirely instrumental solo record, he played all the instruments and did what has become his trademark production work of mixing drones, samples, programming and live drumming. In fact the only collaborator on the record was his nonagenarian grandfather, the Mexican actor Ignacio López Tarso who appears on the first track. Five years, one pandemic, a few political cycles, and a handful of other projects later, he's back this year with Shift: Bad Hombre Vol. II. This time the list of collaborators is a bit longer. Somewhere in the dense fog of the pandemic, Sanchez decided to ask some of his favorite singers and songwriters — for material he could deconstruct and reimagine. The result sees Dave Matthews & Pat Metheny, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Meshell Ndegeocello, Lila Downs, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Kimbra, Ana Tijoux, Becca Stevens, Silvana Estrada, MARO, Thana Alexa (who is his wife) & SONICA sitting in on their own tunes — or ideas co written by Sánchez. The idea of “shifting” might not only apply to the songs on Bad Hombre Vol. II, but also to a change in Antonio's approach - In the first Bad Hombre release, he was extremely political. Over the years, his outrage and fury with Trump and the turmoil at the US–Mexican border muted – and Sánchez himself “shifted” how he thinks about what he does, and where he wants to go next. We talked recently about that search, the same one that started back in Mexico when he was a competitive gymnast, classical pianist and aspiring rock drummer and brought him all the way to where he is today, the Bad Hombre. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Above: Christine Molloy in The Future Tense (2022) This is the first of two episodes we will bring you from the London Film Festival. Dario is joined for both by Savina Petkova as co-host. Savina is published in Film Comment and MUBINotebook and many other places. She is on the editorial board of @photogenie_be, Is a programmer for the upcoming Cambridge Film Festival and and is soon to complete her PhD at Kings College London. As is our style on The Cinematologists, our festival coverage in not a comprehensive overview of the festival or a breakdown of competition films or sections. We bring you more of a snapshot of our experiences, viewings and conversations. So, Savina and Dario begin by discussing the place of London on the European festival calendar and four recommendations of films we've seen in person and on the digital platform. These are Blue Jean (Georgia Oakley), Unrest (Cyril Schäublin), All the Beauty and the Bloodshed (Laura Poitras) and The Eternal Daughter (Joanna Hogg). The centrepiece of this first episode is Dario's interview with Christine Molloy and Joe Lawler, who bring a new Essay Film The Future Tense. Very difference from their last psychological revenge horror Rose Plays Julie, in The Future Tense, they turn the lens back on themselves and specifically the sense of being Irish while living in England during the political and social tumult of the last decade. Finally, Dario talks to blogger Andrew Pope of Whitlock and Pope website about Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest film Bardo, False Chronicles of a Handful of Truths. --- You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. This week we're going balls to frozen forest floor as we trudge through 2015's “The Revenant.” Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, crawled by Leonardo DiCaprio, mumbled by Tom Hardy, and challenged by climate change - the only person having fun in this one was the guy in the CGI bear suit. No D's were harmed in the making of this podcast.
The sandwich is one of humanities greatest discoveries, along with the wheel and RollBot, the robotic toilet paper valet, so we sat down to chat about them. Perhaps it's the sheer variety of fillings that you can put in between two pieces of bread which inspired us but there's a real assortment of unusual choices this week; once we get on a roll, it becomes difficult to wrap things up. Ever since my youngest discovered Paddington I've been quietly chuckling about pairing Alejandro González Iñárritu's THE REVENANT with it for one of our reviews, due to the bear content which binds them both together, however I've yet to find anybody who thinks this is as funny as I do. Happily though the 2015 revenge drama and multiple Academy Award winner stands on its own right without my futile attempts at humour. When frontiersman Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) sustains horrific injuries in a brutal bear attack and is left for dead by his hunting team in the Alaskan wilderness of the 1820's, the grief stricken trapper must use his survival skills to find his way home, fuelled by a single thought: vengeance. A superb arthouse thriller with a refreshing lack of tedious discussions about the morality of revenge until the very end, it features a strong and often revolting lead performance from DiCaprio which finally snagged him a Best Actor Oscar opposite a terrific mumbly-mouthed Tom Hardy as the ruthless Fitzgerald, and fellow brits Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter particularly strong amongst the supporting cast. Iñárritu's collaborations with Emmanuel Lubezki often dazzle in a technical sense and this is no exception, but this really has one of the qualities of great cinema: that sense of transporting you to another time and place, and though plot wise it's all fairly simple stuff, the film has the confidence to plunge you into its world without holding your hand. THE ADVENTURES OF PADDINGTON is a 2020 CGI continuation of the Paddington Cinematic Universe (PCU), set between the events of the first and second Paddington movies but closely mimicking the visual style and thoughtful morality of the original 1976 stop motion animation. You'll never f*cking guess what Paddington finds in Season 1, Episode 1's “Paddington Finds a Pigeon”. Sidey relives terrible memories and Paddington is almost universally panned, with Reegs a sole voice of reason against the braying moaning of the rest of the dads. Gary Barlow wrote the theme tune though so if you were on the fence before that might just sway your vote.We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. In this week's jam-packed edition of the BFG podcast, editor Neal Pollack welcomes Jake Harris to talk about the unfortunate practice of review-bombing. Unfortunately, they conclude, it's here to say and there's nothing we can do to police the bombers. Maybe we can summon the Department of Homeland Security.Next up, resident Tolkien expert G.L. Ford stops by the podcast to talk about the review-bombed ‘The Rings of Power,' the Lord of the Rings prequel series now airing on Amazon Prime. Unlike many online critics, Ford doesn't care about the fact that there are Black Elves and Dwarves, and doesn't think Tolkien would have cared either. He does care about the thin motivations and lack of moral seriousness of some of the characters. But he prefaces all his criticisms with “so far,” because the series still has a shot to deliver.Kaveh Jalinous is spending this fall on the continent, la di da, and filed a report for us from the Venice Film Festival. He and Neal talk about new projects from directors Todd Field, Lars Von Trier, Noah Baumbach, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Luca Guadagnino. If you're going to see a movie at 8:30 a.m., be sure to see it with a strong Italian coffee in hand. Words to live by.Enjoy the show!
