The show announces a new presenting sponsor, Lee gets bleeped, and then we finally start talking about OU football. The guys are back on the practice field following spring break. Is anybody else getting a clear Dillon Gabriel/Jeff Lebby 2022 feeling with Mateer/Arbuckle? Is the Mayfield/Riley 2015 analogy more fitting? Plus fun nostalgic MTV Spring Break thoughts (2:50)! OU released a mic'd up video of Arbuckle and Mateer. There's a couple of interesting takeaways, mainly regarding two apparently key WRs (14:00). Lee doesn't understand the unnecessary expectations that was thrusted on two promising young offensive linemen. Grant doesn't find it to be that big of a deal (21:00). More reactions to the Oklahoma Breakdown Podcast as they recently talked about OU's running back room. Why does that position group not have any difference makers at the moment (32:40)? Mike Gundy's Bedlam spring proposal (42:40). Breaking down John Mateer's play in Washington State's 29-26 win over SDSU in Week 9. This game showed us something about Mateer that hopefully is a very positive sign for the future (46:00). For basketball fans, we talk about OU's first round exit to UConn in the NCAA Tournament (1:13:55).

In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the infamous Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle case from the 1920s. Arbuckle, a comedic superstar earning a million dollars a year, saw his career implode following a Labor Day party in 1921 at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. The scandal centered around the tragic death of aspiring actress Virginia Rappe, who fell ill at the party and died a few days later. Arbuckle faced manslaughter charges, driven by accusations from Rappe's friend Maud Delmont, leading to three intense and highly publicized trials. Despite Arbuckle's eventual acquittal, his career and public image were irreparably damaged due to conflicting witness accounts, media sensationalism, and a societal backlash against Hollywood's perceived immorality. The episode also examines the intricate human dynamics and motives of key figures such as Delmont and Rappe's ex-fiancé, Henry Lerman. Ultimately, this case serves as a cautionary tale about the power of media, the complexity of justice, and the fragile nature of fame.00:00 Introduction to the Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle Case00:40 The Fateful Labor Day Party01:02 Virginia Rappe's Tragic Story01:30 Conflicting Accounts and Media Frenzy02:28 The Accusations Against Arbuckle05:26 The Trials and Legal Battles10:28 The Aftermath and Arbuckle's Struggle14:23 Lessons from the Arbuckle Scandal18:46 Final Thoughts and Upcoming Episodes Hosted on Acast. Gary welcomes back Michael Benson, an author known for his insightful explorations of organized crime and Hollywood history. Benson has collaborated with Frank DiMatteo on several mob-related books, including The Cigar: Carmine Galante and Mafia Hitman, illustrating the intricate ties between criminal enterprises and key figures' personal stories. In Hollywood Moguls: The Lives and Times of Hollywood Film Pioneers Nicholas and Joseph Schenck, Michael documents stories of corruption and mob infiltration and reveals that Craig Reeves, Superman, was murdered and did not commit suicide. As the conversation unfolds, the host and Benson delve into the Skank brothers' encounters with organized crime. They recount how notorious Chicago Outfit extortionists sought to muscle in on the movie theaters by taking over the projectionists' union. The brothers cleverly turned this threat into an opportunity, negotiating a deal that ultimately benefited both sides while ensuring their continued financial success. This anecdote exemplifies the intertwining of crime and commerce during the era, showcasing how the Skank brothers operated in a morally gray space to maintain power. Benson narrates incidents from Hollywood's scandalous past, explicitly focusing on Fatty Arbuckle, one of the Skank brothers' most prominent stars, whose career unraveled due to a notorious scandal in the 1920s. Arbuckle's involvement in a tragic incident highlighted the dark side of celebrity culture and the lengths to which the Skank brothers went to protect their financial interests, including paying for Arbuckle's trials. Through Arbuckle's story, the conversation touches on the reputational risks that could derail even the most profitable careers and the measures Hollywood took to manage public relations crises. Transcript [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretappers out there, it's good to be back here in Studio Gangland Wires. Colder in hell here in Kansas City today, as you can tell by [0:06] the flannel shirt I'm wearing. And I see my guest, Michael Benson, is wearing some more cold weather clothes, too. So anyhow, Michael Benson is our guest today. I've had him on before. He has written several mob books with Frank DiMatteo. I just actually just really read with, in detail, really read through this story of Carmine Galante's cigars. It's really, really a good book. It was kind of interesting to really sit and go through a book, you know, line by line rather than just, you know, going through it real fast is really good. Well-written. And then we got Mafia Hitman by Frank DiMatteo and Michael Benson. That's, that's the story of the guy that really killed Joey Gallo. Not the Irishman. So you got a couple more, I believe. We love Scorsese, but he prefers stories that aren't quite true. And he tells them really well. Yeah. But it's not history. Yeah. And Frank had a kind of a front row seat to a lot of these. You're a co-author. [1:05] He is the authority. Yes. He is. He truly is. He's a good guy too. The first book he wrote about his own father and a lot about that. It's got to be. Well, you know, the deal that he wrote a book called Lion in the Basement. About Joey Gallo and the lion in the basement on President Street. And Gary Goldstein at Kensington Books read it...

The guys jump right into the news that DeMarco Murray was a candidate for the Penn State running backs coach job, but will stay at OU after all. Lock in for another DeMarco Murray/OU running backs discussion (1:30). Lee did not quite realize how lowly ranked OU's 2025 signing class is. This takes us on a journey of OU's previous recruiting classes. The 2017 class was incredible (28:05). Over to the John Mateer/Ben Arbuckle 2024 watch as Washington State won a 54-52 2OT shootout against San Jose State. Mateer and Arbuckle continued to show a lot of promise, while Mateer also provided two massive lowlights. Through 4 games we are still very much pleased about what we've seen from both Mateer and Arbuckle (41:20). Jalen Hurts and the Eagles dominated the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, it was a very poor game (1:14:00). The guys inexplicably close the show with thoughts on the OU men's basketball team (1:23:35). | Like the show on Facebook: @westofeverest | Follow Grant on Twitter: @GrantBenson25 | Follow Lee on Twitter: @LeeBensonTweets
Dr. Iain Lampert interviews Ethan Arbuckle, the back-to-back season-long champion of the International Public Debate Association. Ethan's journey is marked by notable achievements, including back-to-back championships in the Pro Division, as well as the title of Pro Speaker Champion. He has also led a team to victory as the Assistant Coach to earn the 2023-2024 Community College Championship. In addition to his role in individual debate and coaching, he won the 2021-2022 Team IPDA Championship alongside his partner. Ethan also contributed as an author to the IPDA's 3rd edition textbook.
Grant opens the show by reminding everybody that DeMarco Murray and Joe Jon Finley continue to be on staff and presents a new conspiracy theory. We transition smoothly to OU bringing on Nate Dreiling and Wes Goodwin to coach linebackers. Brent Venables also announced that he will be calling plays in 2025 (7:45). Ben Arbuckle is going to make $1.5M per year (25:05). Thoughts on John Mateer and Ben Arbuckle in Washington State's win in Week 3 over Washington. There's a lot of good with this duo through three games (28:10). Brian Hartline is going to be the next OC at Ohio State. Grant really likes this guy (1:04:45). Major General Joe Arbuckle, Major General, U.S.Army (Ret.) Major General Joe Arbuckle and I spoke about a new initiative by Flag Officers for America supporting the nomination of Pete Hegseth to be the next Secretary of Defense and why all of us should support that nomination to save our military from the wrecking operation to which it's been subjected by cultural Marxists and other enemies, foreign and domestic. Peter Mcilvenna, Heart of Oak Podcast I visited with Peter Mcilvenna about the state of freedom in the United Kingdom and the rather draconian steps being taken by the government of Prime Minister Sturmer to restrict, particularly, freedom of speech in ways seemingly very similar to the punishment of January 6th defendants in this country. We also talked about elections coming in France and Germany, as well as the prospects that the European Union itself may be a victim of rising popular nationalism and populist nationalism. We discussed something called the Corporate Transparency Act, an instrument of repression in the United States that, fortunately, has now been stayed temporarily. Will we be spared its penalties permanently?

The guys open the show briefly talking a little bit about Grant's upcoming trip to Europe, before getting into more important topics like Ben Arbuckle being hired as OU's offensive coordinator. We give our initial thoughts and go over some positive numbers. We also compare some of Arbuckle's numbers to Lincoln Riley and Seth Littrell (2:40). Venables announced that he will retain the offensive staff. Will that actually hold into 2025 (29:30)? Jackson Arnold is going to enter the transfer portal. Will Wazzu's John Mateer come to OU (42:50)? OU's going to need a lot of help on offense in 2025. Nic Anderson is entering the transfer portal as well. OU's injuries plus running back talk (53:30). Where do you stand on Deion Burks (1:02:50)? OU held on to Michael Fasusi, but the 2025 recruiting class is the lowest ranked for the Sooners in more than a decade (1:06:00). We read some comments from the WoE Facebook page (1:12:45). Discussing the College Football Playoff rankings. Grant's okay with Alabama being in line to get in. Lee thinks Miami is being under ranked. Grant was way out ahead of one very obvious problem with the current playoff system and Lee apologizes for going over the odds on who will win the National Championship (1:23:30). Hollywood's First Sex ScandalAd-Free Safe House EditionEpisode 143 digs back into the early days of the motion picture industry, before Hollywood became synonymous with greed and lust and power. It only took a murder charge to bring down one of the biggest stars of the day, and even though it seems like poor Fatty got a bum rap on the deal, it's probably the only reason Arbuckle's work is not held in as high regard as Keaton and Chaplin today. On this weeks ‘Old Crimson, Jason “Puck” Puckett is once again joined by Paul Sorensen, Jim Moore and Jamey Vinnick from Cougfan.com The boys get right into the loss to New Mexico, which has now kicked them out of the College Football playoff discussion. Once again the Cougars defense failed to deliver and Puck brought up the point that he would like to see a coaching change at the defensive coordinator position or at least have Jake Dickert take over play calling duties. They question the offensive strategy under Ben Arbuckle and wonder why he went away from the running game so quickly in the second half when it was working so effectively in the first half? Should the Cougs incorporate more zone read for John Mateer moving forward? And, again the problem with the Air Raid is their lack of commitment to staying consistent with the rushing attack. Dickert made headlines this week when he said Oregon State are not there buddies. Some in the Cougars community have taken issue with what he said. Paul and Puck didn't see the problem with what he said, but Jim did and they discuss. Lastly, now that the carrot of the playoffs is over, what motivates the team for the last two weeks?
