We rarely get to hear Joel Potrykus talk about himself as an actor. The independent filmmaker of such beloved low-budget treasures as “Ape,” “Buzzard,” and “Relaxer” says he has, in fact, never talked about it. In his latest, “Vulcanizadora,” he once again co-stars with the man he loves to point his camera at, Joshua Burge. The two reprise their roles of Derek and Marty exactly ten years after they birthed those characters in “Buzzard.” On this episode, Potrykus explains the decision to take on the role in both films, why he loves working with the “machine” that is Burge, the part of directing actors he likes the least, how the end of “Field of Dreams” helped his acting process, and much more. Back To One is the in-depth, no-nonsense, actors-on-acting podcast from Filmmaker Magazine. In each episode, host Peter Rinaldi invites one working actor to do a deep dive into their unique process, psychology, and approach to the craft. Follow Back To One on Instagram

Lucas Anders interviews Joel Potrykus (director/writer/actor) about his new film VULCANIZADORA. See the Alberta Premiere as part of the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) on Saturday April 26th, 2025 at 4:15 pm at the Globe CInema. A heavy metal slacker comedy, VULCANIZADORA cascades into an existential nightmare and journey through themes of friendship, guilt, and contemplations of mortality. Two friends trudge through a Michigan forest with the intention of following through on a disturbing pact. After they fail, one of them must return home to deal with the legal and emotional repercussions. Director and star Joel Potrykus (BUZZARD, THE ALCHEMIST COOKBOOK, and CUFF 2018 Secret Screening RELAXER) serves up another deliciously dark film, and possibly the most well-realized culmination of the themes featured throughout his body of work. The Tribeca and Fantasia Film Festival selected film is a masterful combination of jet-black humour and psychological horror.

This week Drusilla and Josh cover the 2016 micro-budget horror film, The Alchemist Cookbook. Josh is sick, being lazy is anti-capitalist, How to Do Nothing, They talk a long time about SCREIVI or SCREAM 6. From wiki: “The Alchemist Cookbook is a horror film directed by Joel Potrykus. The film was released on the 7th of October 2016 in New York City. The film stars Ty Hickson as "Sean" and Amari Cheatom as "Cortez". The film was produced by Oscilloscope Laboratories and by producers Andrew D. Corkin, Bryan Reisberg and Ashley Young.[1] "Sean" is an outcast who isolates himself from society to practice alchemy, accompanied by only his cat. As his mental condition deteriorates the line of what is real and what is not becomes blurred, and as his chemistry turns to black magic, he instead summons a demon.[1] The film breaks the conventional boundaries of genre, as elements of a black comedy, horror and a psychological thriller are all incorporated and intertwined.[2] The Alchemist cookbook was released on an alternate release strategy, as a pay what you want film, in both theatres and on BitTorrent bundle.[2] The film was an official selection at the 2016 South by Southwest Film Festival.[1]” NEXT WEEK: Don't Deliver Us From Evil (1972) Website: http://www.bloodhauspod.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/BloodhausPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Email: bloodhauspod@gmail.com Drusilla's art: https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/ Drusilla's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hydesister/ Drusilla's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/drew_phillips/ Joshua's website: https://www.joshuaconkel.com/ Joshua's Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoshuaConkel Joshua's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/ Joshua's Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/joshuaconkel

We've all been isolated, to some degree, for the last year. Austin Allan James' debut feature Who's With Me?, available for free on YouTube, perfectly captures the sense of loneliness and paranoia to which many of us have become accustomed. His film was also almost entirely finished pre-pandemic. Paul and Arlo talk with Austin about his clairvoyant powers, working on a shoestring budget, the inspiration he draws from filmmakers such as David Lynch and Joel Potrykus, how much of a fee turtles can demand, and what it all means, man. Jim and Teal are back this week with an episode filled with recent streaming action. First: Jim mentions a couple of quick hits, Operation Finaleand Northern Soul. Then Teal presents his hidden gem of the week, Buzzard (2015.) This low-budget indie from director Joel Potrykus scratches Teal where he itches. Jim feels the pressure to match Teal with an Amazon Prime streaming oddity of his own. His pick? Another bizarre low-budget indie called Los Angeles Overnight. Is this bizarre caper flick worth your time? Jim provides answers. Somewhere in the midst of all this excitement, Jim reveals a viewing that is so bad, he considers it the worst film he's made it all the way to the end of. If that doesn't get your curiosity going, nothing will. Wrapping things up, Jim and Teal discuss Widows and John Wick 3. Jim finally caught up with Widows and Teal got his Wick on. Find out what each one thinks. There's a lot of film stuff discussion in one super-sized episode. Set your podcast phasers on stun.
As if being a college professor wasn’t taxing enough, Joel Potrykus is a luminary as an independent filmmaker. He calls in this week to talk about his days as a standup comedian and why he got into filmmaking. He also gives sage advice on being bald. In the intro, Randy reminded Clark of a sad story about a blind ventriloquist and a few films are discussed. Since 2012, Joel Potrykus has arguably become one of the most successful and unusual independent film directors to ever emerge out of Michigan and land on the global cinema stage. Despite all of his success, Joel says he “doesn’t enjoy the process of making a movie.” Doesn’t that seem like a weird thing for a film director to say? Maybe…but not after you listen to this episode. Joel and I take a deep dive into his filmmaking and writing process, why he makes films in Grand Rapids when he doesn’t have to, why he thinks of his tight-knit and frequent film collaborators function as more of a band than a production company, as well as the many reasons he loves casting the incredibly talented Joshua Burge as the lead actor in many of his films. Joel’s previous films Ape, Buzzard and The Alchemist Cookbook all established him as a genius writer & director of odd, offbeat and campy films. The tone and style of his films caught the attention of, and quickly forged a business and creative relationship with famed independent film studio, Oscilloscope Laboratories, which was founded by the late Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys fame. But it’s his latest film, Relaxer, that is kicking everything up a few more notches for Joel Potrykus. Its time to look at one of the most defining films of the past decade, IMO. It is Buzzard. Directed by Joel Potrykus and starring Joshua Burge. Joel Potrykus' Relaxer is an odd film to pin down - it's a slacker movie, a dark millennial comedy, a gruesome work of body horror, a harrowing interpersonal sibling drama, and a million other things. But the tale of a layabout twentysomething (a haunting Joshua Burge) stuck to a grimy leather couch, resolving to not eat, drink, sleep or get up until he reaches Level 256 of Pac-Man, on the cusp of the new millennium, is uniquely gut-wrenching in surprising ways. (You can read our review of Relaxer here.) A movie like this requires either no explanation or heaps of it, so we got Potrykus on the line to talk about the origins of the project, working with his muse Joshua Burge, the freedom (and restrictions) of filming in a single locked-down apartment, and more. (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop. Thanks to Cards Against Humanity for sponsoring this episode!)
