Movie of the Year: 2006BrickThe Brick podcast episode of Movie of the Year arrives just in time to appreciate one of 2006's most audacious genre experiments. Ryan, Mike, and Greg are joined by Pete Wright of TruStory FM to dig into Rian Johnson's neo-noir debut, a film that transplants the hard-boiled world of Dashiell Hammett into the hallways and parking lots of a Southern California high school. Few films from this era take a bigger swing, and fewer still land it this cleanly.About Brick (2006)Brick is a neo-noir mystery thriller written, edited, and directed by Rian Johnson in his feature directorial debut. The film opened in New York and Los Angeles on April 7, 2006, distributed by Focus Features. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Brendan Frye, a teenage loner who pushes his way into the criminal underworld of his high school to investigate the disappearance -- and eventual murder -- of his ex-girlfriend Emily, played by Emilie de Ravin. The supporting cast includes Lukas Haas as the drug kingpin known only as the Pin, Nora Zehetner as the duplicitous Laura, Noah Fleiss as the enforcer Tug, and Richard Roundtree as a vice principal navigating the chaos from the margins.Johnson wrote the first draft in 1997 immediately after graduating from USC School of Cinematic Arts. He spent the next seven years trying to get it made, with every financier asking him to set it in college instead of high school. He ultimately raised approximately $450,000 from friends and family, shot the film in 20 days, and spent three months rehearsing with the cast beforehand. The score -- inventive and deeply atmospheric -- was composed by Johnson's cousin Nathan Johnson using traditional instruments alongside improvised ones including filing cabinets, kitchen utensils, and tack pianos, all recorded on an Apple PowerBook. The film drew on hardboiled classics, particularly the novels of Dashiell Hammett, and won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. It holds an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned three stars from Roger Ebert, who called it a rich source of dialogue and behavior. You can read Ebert's full review at RogerEbert.com. Brick has since become a cult classic and a clear blueprint for Johnson's later work on Knives Out.Find the full cast and crew listing at Brick on IMDb.Guest Panelist: Pete WrightPete Wright is a podcaster, author, educator, and co-founder of TruStory FM, a podcast production network he has built over more than three decades in media. This Brick podcast episode marks his first appearance on Movie of the Year.Brick Podcast Discussion: Noir in High SchoolThe central creative gamble of Brick is not simply that it applies film noir conventions to a high school setting. More precisely, it applies them without irony. Johnson made a deliberate choice to play every scene completely straight, and the cast follows his lead without a single wink at the camera. Consequently, the absurdity of the premise becomes the engine of the film's tension rather than its release valve. This Brick podcast opens with a foundational question: does the noir-in-high-school conceit actually work? The genre's grammar depends heavily on power asymmetry, corruption, and the lone investigator operating outside institutional structures. High school provides all three. Brendan's relationship with the vice principal mirrors the classic detective's uneasy truce with law enforcement. The Pin's basement headquarters functions as the smoky back room. The femme fatale and the enforcer play their archetypal roles without adjustment.Johnson drew specifically on the novels of Dashiell Hammett -- particularly the Continental Op stories -- and encouraged his cast to read Hammett rather than watch noir films. He wanted the stylistic choices to come from the source material, not from imitation of existing screen adaptations. That decision gives Brick a distinctive texture. Moreover, the dialogue mixes actual period noir slang with invented high school vernacular in a way that creates its own self-consistent world. As Roger Ebert noted, the story never fully clarifies itself while it unfolds, but it delivers a rich supply of behavior and incident along the way.Genre Bending: What the Brick 2006 Film Is Actually DoingBrick belongs to a specific 2006 moment when genre recombination was operating at a high creative pitch. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang had landed the previous year playing similar games with noir self-awareness. Sin City had arrived with a maximalist visual approach to the same source material. Brick chose a third path: minimal budget, straight-faced commitment, and an insistence that the formal constraints of the genre could do meaningful emotional work if you simply trusted them. The genre-bending discussion on this Brick podcast examines how Johnson uses the noir framework not as homage but as architecture. The structure of a hardboiled mystery -- the inciting mystery, the series of contacts, the betrayal, the revelation -- maps onto adolescent social hierarchies with surprising precision. Furthermore, the paranoia endemic to the genre translates naturally into the heightened social surveillance of high school life, where everyone watches everyone and information is currency. The Spaghetti Western and Anime InfluencesJohnson has cited Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns and Shinichiro Watanabe's Cowboy Bebop as visual influences alongside the noir literary tradition. That combination matters, because it explains why Brick never feels purely retro. The film's rhythm and its relationship to violence carry a different energy than classic noir. Notably, Johnson used shoes as a design element for each character, treating footwear as an immediate visual shorthand for who each person is. It's a small detail that reflects how thoroughly he thought through every layer of the film's visual language.Additionally, the score by Nathan Johnson uses invented instruments -- wine-o-phones, tack pianos, kitchen utensils -- to create an atmosphere that nods to classic noir without reproducing it. The result is a film that works as genre exercise, coming-of-age story, and tone poem simultaneously. The Treatment of Women in BrickNoir has always had a complicated relationship with its female characters, and Brick inherits that complication without fully interrogating it. Emily exists primarily as a body -- a mystery to be solved, a loss to be avenged. She drives the entire plot but occupies very little of the film's actual screen time. Laura is more present, but her function remains rooted in the femme fatale archetype: beautiful, manipulative, ultimately revealed as the architect of the tragedy. The Brick podcast addresses this directly. Does Johnson's decision to play the genre completely straight mean he also reproduces its blind spots uncritically? The case for the defense is that Brick is a formal exercise, and the female characters serve genre functions that the film deliberately signals as such. The case against is that signaling an archetype and interrogating it are different things, and Brick largely declines to do the latter. Moreover, the pregnancy subplot -- Emily is pregnant with Tug's child, a revelation that triggers her murder -- adds a layer of consequence to the female characters' bodies that the film handles with notable brevity. It functions as a plot mechanism more than a human reality. The discussion examines how this choice shapes the film's emotional center, which ultimately rests entirely with Brendan's grief and not with Emily's life or Laura's survival.Nevertheless, Nora Zehetner's performance as Laura earns genuine complexity within the constraints the script gives her. The hosts explore whether that performance transcends the archetype or simply executes it with exceptional skill.Rushmore: 2006 It BoysThe Taste Buds carve out space in this episode for a Rushmore segment dedicated to the It Boys of 2006 -- the young male actors whose stars were ascending in that specific cultural moment. Brick arrives at a fascinating point in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career trajectory, before Inception and The Dark Knight Rises made him a mainstream anchor, when he was still operating in the cult-film

Lukas Haas Gets Real About Hollywood, Child Fame & Spider-Noir What's it really like to grow up in Hollywood, become a star as a kid, and still keep evolving as an artist decades later? In this episode of Reza Rifts, Keith Reza sits down with Lukas Haas for a candid, funny, and surprisingly deep conversation about his upcoming role in Spider-Noir, the pressure of self-tape auditions, playing darker characters, and what it takes to survive a lifetime in the entertainment industry. Lukas opens up about landing Spider-Noir, stepping into a stylized noir comic-book world, and why filming in both black-and-white and color gave the project such a unique feel. He also talks about the freedom of playing a villain, the art of instinctive acting, and how costumes, tone, and physicality all help shape a memorable performance. But this episode goes far beyond one role. Keith and Lukas also dive into Lukas's early rise as a child actor, learning lines before he fully knew how to read, working through the highs and lows of a long Hollywood career, and the reality of constantly reinventing yourself as you grow older in the industry. They also talk about Mars Attacks!, creative burnout, rewriting dialogue, difficult personalities in Hollywood, and Lukas's passion for music including his upcoming release of "Ramblin' Man." If you love Hollywood stories, acting insights, behind-the-scenes film talk, child star journeys, and honest conversations with real artists, this is one of the most revealing Reza Rifts episodes yet. Guest Bio Lukas Haas is an actor and musician whose career began in childhood and has spanned decades across film and television. In this conversation, Keith references credits including Witness, Lady in White, The Wizard of Loneliness, Mars Attacks!, and Inception. Lukas also discusses his role in the upcoming series Spider-Noir, where he plays the right-hand man to Brendan Gleeson's character, as well as his passion for writing and recording music. When I first saw the trailer on a "Focus Features" DVD I knew this was one that I had to see. In Rian Johnson's directorial debut, this modern film noir weaves quite a knot that slowly unties throughout the course of the story. Joseph Gordon-Levitt carries every scene which reminded me of his other indie films in the early 00s that I loved so much. I get into why this story and visual style reminds me of Donnie Darko, how Focus Features was equivalent to A24 back in the day, the minimal normie yet important fashion, and try to work out the illogical parts of what the hell was actually going on. A Philadelphia detective (Harrison Ford) discovers a murder conspiracy within his department and hides out in Amish country in order protect his witness. Co-starring Kelly McGillis, Lukas Haas, Josef Sommer and Danny Glover.
In upstate New York on Halloween 1962, a boy witnesses a 10-year-old murder. Lady in White is a film from Matt's youth, and we're looking forward to talking about it on today's 13 Days of Halloween episode!
This week, we discuss two films from Australian director Peter Weir. The first is Witness (1985), starring Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis and Lukas Haas. The film focuses on a police detective protecting an Amish woman and her son, who becomes a target after he witnesses a brutal murder in a Philadelphia railway station. The second is Gallipoli (1981), starring Mel Gibson and Mark Lee. The film revolves around several young men from Western Australia who enlist in the Australian Army during World War I and fight in the disastrous Gallipoli campaign.
Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis and a very young Lukas Haas star in Peter Weir's understated action movie, in which a young Amish boy witnesses the murder of a police officer and only one man can solve the crime. Ford, it's Harrison Ford. But what do Jen and Mick make of a less swaggering hero? Should Kelly McGillis have got her tits out? What does the film (maybe) say about gun control? And why can't Jen recognise people in films? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Witness is a tense thriller as much as it is a sweet love story, but Peter Weir's typically sensitive direction balances those elements very well. He also led Harrison Ford to his only Oscar nomination, which seems hard to believe for a guy who's been such a big movie star for such a long time. Lukas Haas plays a young Amish Pennsylvanian who witnesses a vicious murder in the washroom of a train station, then Philly detective Ford has to protect him and his mother (Kelly McGillis) from retribution by the dirty cops who did the deed. And, throughout, Ford & McGillis slowly fall for each other. 25 years after its initial release, Kurt Vonnegut's biting portrayal of America's mad chaos, BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS returns in a restored 4K version, the perfect film for our complicated times. Directed by Alan Rudolph, and starring Bruce Willis, Albert Finney, Nick Nolte, Glenne Headly, Barbara Hershey, Omar Epps, Luka Haas and many more, the incisive comedy has been overlooked for far too long. His television commercial-addicted wife (Barbara Hershey) may or may not be physically present when he's with her. His son (Lukas Haas) resides in a bomb shelter aspiring to be a lounge singer. His paranoid sales manager (Nick Nolte) has a significant sex secret. A Dwayne Hoover worshipper (Omar Epps) has taken up residence on his car lot. And his adulating secretary/lover (Glenne Headly) wonders if Dwayne Hoover has changed. The reeling business titan needs to find something or someone immediately to tell him the truth, to guide him out of this punishing, yet well-deserved, self-doubt. Simultaneous to Dwayne expanding breakdown, an impoverished and nonsensical science fiction writer, Kilgore Trout (Albert Finney), is making his way to Midland City's Fine Arts Festival, hailed as the world's greatest author by Midland City's wealthiest cultural leader. Once Hoover discovers Trout's impending arrival, he is maniacally determined to meet the author and receive the message that will restore his confidence and well-being. On this week's episode of the podcast, we watched Tim Burton's 1996 sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks!, starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Martin Short Pam Grier, Rod Steiger, Jim Brown, Lukas Haas, Danny DeVito and Natalie Portman.Mars Attacks! was based off of the 1960s-era trading card series by Topps. In the series, Earth is invaded by cruel, hideous Martians who hope to colonize the planet and enslave its population. In the movie, Earth is invaded by cruel hideous Martians. But they don't seem to want to colonize the planet as much as engage in wanton destruction for its own sake. To the extent that the film has a plot, it follows several groups of people. There is President James Dale, played by Nicholson, his wife and daughter. There is a young donut shop employee and his family in Nevada. There is an aging boxer turned casino employee, his ex-wife and their children. And there are a pair of talk show hosts. The film shows first contact followed by the Martian war on Earth. Most of the characters are either weak and incompetent, like President Dale and the American military, vain and oblivious, like the various members of the media, or outright rubes, like some of the more ordinary people in the film. The Martians rampage across the country, killing everyone they see including the president and the first lady. They are eventually stopped when two characters, the young donut shop employee and his grandmother, discover that the yodeling on Slim Whitman's “Indian Love Call” is enough to cause their heads to explode. They defeat the Martian invasion and are awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their exploits. The taglines for Mars Attacks were “Nice planet. We'll take it!” and “Yikes! They've landed!”Mars Attacks is available for rent or purchase either Amazon or Apple TV.Episodes come out every two weeks so we'll see you then with an episode on Shadow Conspiracy, a 1997 conspiracy thriller directed by George P. A young Amish boy witnesses a murder by corrupt Philadelphia cops, leaving a rogue detective to protect the boy and his family from their wrath while hiding in the Pennsylvania countryside. A dreamlike mix of brutal noir, romantic longing, and pastoral comedy, it's one of the rare films that let Ford stretch out as an actor during his action heyday. Starring Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lukas Haas, and Danny Glover. Written by Earl W. Wallace and William Kelley. Directed by Peter Weir.
What better way to experience the end of the world than through the eyes of Time Burton? Marshall Shaffer (Slant Magazine, Decider, /Film, Marshall and the Movie Substack) and Rafa Sales Ross (Sight & Sound, i_D, BFI, Total Film, Little White Lies) return to Flixwatcher to review Marshall's choice Widows. Widows (2018) is a heist thriller from director Steve (12 Years A Slave) McQueen and screenplay by Gillian (Gone Girl) Flynn, based on a Lynda La Plante TV series. The ‘widows' are Veronica Rawlings (Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez) and Alice (Elizabeth Debicki). Left to deal with the $2,000,000 debt left by a heist gone wrong, led by Veronica's husband, Harry Rawlings (Liam Neeson), the group decide to carry out a elaborate heist themselves to pay back Jamal and Jatemme Manning (Brian Tyree Henry and Daniel Kaluuya). Cynthia Erivo, Colin Farrell, Jacki Weaver, Carrie Coon, Robert Duvall, Jon Bernthal, Garret Dillahunt and Lukas Haas also star. Recommendability scores for Widows were very high, not only does it deliver on plot twists and heist tension but it is also a commentary on gentrification. It also scores highly across other Flixwatcher categories to score a very high 4.52 overall. Welcome back to your favorite podcast about some of Hollywood's biggest bombs. This month, Not A Bomb is examining some of 2023's biggest box office failures and critically lambasted films! Once again, Brad's shenanigans are back and he's breaking all the rules. On this week's episode, the guys welcome back Jose from Watch/Skip+ to discuss the very divisive film from 2022 that didn't get a wide release until 2023, Babylon. This three hour epic is an ode to Hollywood during the transition from silent films to talkies (imagine Singing in the Rain but much darker in tone). Notable for its All-Star cast, Babylon failed to make an impact at the box-office and divided most critics. Does Babylon's 3-hour runtime deserve your attention? Is it too obnoxious, trangressive, and pretensious for the average film fan? Or maybe this is a visually majestic tragedy that will soon become a cult classic? Download and listen!Babylon is directed by Damein Chazelle and stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, P.J. Bryne, Lukas Haas, Max Minghella, Rory Scovel, Katherine Waterston, and Tobey Maguire. As the year comes to an end, Not A Bomb wants to know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice! Also, longtime friend of Troy and Brad, Michael Neel, released his movie - Infinite Santa 8000 via Synapse Films. Another classic example in the 90s of studio interference that ruined what could have been a standout film. With a great cast and a disappointing story trajectory, we were left wanting wayyy more at the end of this. Me and Jai only watched for Queen Winona. Granted, she tried to carry this film but ultimately the script was lacking and she dine have much help in terms of a strong actor in the lead role. Instead of not reviewing it we did get into what we would change, things that would have helped the story out, and talked a bit of gossip about the starsoff-topic rants: the 90s "Pussy Posse", Gwyneth Paltrow, BFFs--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Episode 36 highlights a couple of romantic dramas. The Violent Heart starring Jovan Adeppo, Mary J. Blige and Lukas Haas combines a murder mystery with forbidden romance. The movie "4" starring the incredible Wendelll Pierce is all about our connectons in life. Both of the these great films can be found on AMAZON.
A Humanistic Pairing: Harrison Ford & Peter Weir (Witness and The Mosquito Coast) Join me as we close out our Harrison Ford Tribute (tribute?) with a look at two exceptional Ford performances (one of which is his only Oscar nomination), 1985s Witness and 1986s The Mosquito Coast. In the first film a seemingly typical Ford character, Philadelphia Detective John Book finds himself protecting a young Amish boy (Lukas Haas) and his mother (Kelly McGillis) in an Amish community completely unfamiliar to him. What could easily be a routine and obvious storyline is allowed to find itself and evolve into more than your standard police procedural. Director Peter Weir (in his first American production after great success in Australia - Picnic at Hanging Rock and Gallipoli) delivers a gripping and emotionally powerful narrative. The following year would find Weir and Ford continuing their collaboration with The Mosquito Coast (from the novel by Paul Theroux with a screenplay from Paul Schrader). In a performance unlike anything else in his filmography, Ford portrays Allie Fox an inventor, father of four, and deeply dissapointed member of American society. Disgusted with the hypocrisy, laziness, and greed of America, Fox moves his family to the jungles of Panama in an egotistical effort to control his (and his family's) present and future. On this week's episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, we take a look at the 1986 science fiction film "Solarbabies". Directed by Alan Johnson and (shocklingly) co-produced by Mel Brooks, "Solarbabies" stars Richard Jordan, Jami Gertz, Jason Patric, Lukas Haas, and Charles Durning and tells a tale of a post-aocalyptic future ruled by the military where a group of renegade teenage orphans find a legendary orb (named Bohdai) that can supposedly bring the rain back to dried up Earth. When it was first released, Solarbabies was received poorly by critics due to its confusing plot and derivative sci-fi elements. So how does it hold up in 2023? Check out the latest episode to find out!

On a very special episode of Cinephilia, Mike and Trevor talk about possibly the most underrated movie of 2022, Babylon. It's the unique tale of Hollywood's struggle with the introduction of sound.
As flash floods spread across Los Angeles, we risked our lives driving through torrential rain to see Damien Chazelle's 3-hour Hollywood epic Babylon. The movie massively flopped at the box office losing over $100 million, and it divided critics and audiences alike who either loved or hated it. It was rated R for severe sex & nudity, violence, drug use, profanity, and elephant defecation. We definitely had to see it on the big screen! The movie is set in the late 1920s and early 1930s as motion pictures transitioned from silent films to talkies. It stars Margot Robbie as a very coked-up aspiring actress, Brad Pitt as an aging silent film star, and Diego Calva as a film assistant who bears witness to the whole extravaganza. The movie has excellent supporting roles including Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, Lukas Haas, Katherine Waterston, Tobey Maguire, Flea, Jeff Garlin, Olivia Wilde, Spike Jonze, and even the great Eric Roberts! You might love it or you might hate it, but you owe it to yourself to witness Babylon!
Hollywood - Spectacle & Sacrifice: Damien Chazelle's Babylon This week, Mr. Chavez & I continue our close out of 2022 (going into this third week of 2023), with a look at one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year (and one of its most polarizing films and biggest box-office disappointments), Damien Chazelle's Babylon. This is certainly a film that defines cinematic ambition, but also thematic and visual excess; A film of grotesque imagery and questionable plot points, Chazelle's love and fascination for the Hollywood's Silent Era and the slow emergence into "Talkies" is divisive at the very least. Rarely does a film emrege that is as beautiful, overblown, and misguided as this three-hour opus. Featuring Hollywood Stars interpreting the lives of early screen stars John Gilbert (Brad Pitt) and Clara Bow (Margot Robbie), and newcomers Diego Calva, Li Jun Li, and Jovan Adepo, as well as Jean Smart, Flea, Lukas Haas, Eric Roberts, Jeff Garlin, and Tobey McGuire. Incredibly problematic, but definitely worth seeing on the big screen, Chazelle's "Love Letter to Cinema and Hate Letter to Los Angeles/Hollywood" is one of the more fascinating spectacles in recent cinema. Take a listen and let us know what you think. As always, we. dive into all aspects of this film. It is best to have seen the film before listening. You've been warned. Questions, Comments, Complaints, and Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com Many Thanks.

Bent Hamer, Pål Sverre Hagen and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new film The Middle Man, precise poetic comedy, empathy and philosophy, existential angst, satire and rich literary material, and why humour is a way through which we can begin to understand each other.TrailerSynopsis:The Middle Man is a darkly humorous social satire which takes place in a small town that is experiencing an epidemic of accidents and deaths. The town is run by “The Commission” - the Sheriff, the Doctor and the Pastor - who decide to hire a ‘Middle Man' whose sole responsibility will be to inform the family when an unfortunate incident occurs.Frank Farrelli is a quiet, thoughtful man who proves perfect for the job. He takes his new role on with gusto and quickly becomes the town's beacon of bad news. But the pressures of the job and a budding new romance overwhelm Frank. To ease his burden, he calls in a ‘favour' that ends up in a horrifying yet oddly amusing murder.About Bent & Pål: Bent Hamer is a Norwegian director, writer, producer and owner of the film production company BulBul Film. Coming of age stories come in all shapes and sizes. The adaptation of Calder Willingham's 1972 semi-autobiographical novel ‘Rambling Rose' into Martha Coolidge's 1991 film of the same name was one that captured a slice of life of a teenager and his family growing up in the South during the Great Depression. His coming of age largely happens when the new housekeeper moves in and piques his sexual awareness. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our John Heard series with Coolidge's 1991 film Rambling Rose. Does Rambling Rose work for us? This is an interesting film because there's a lot about it to discuss. But does that mean we liked it? Pete really didn't while Andy liked it but with reservations. Neither of us were as captured as critics were at the time, so why is that? We go back and forth on the characters here. Andy likes Robert Duvall. Pete doesn't. We both love Diane Ladd. Laura Dern and Lukas Haas are great but what do we think of their characters? And that doctor? Is he stupidly evil or is there more to him? Of course there's the whole sexual exploration dealt with between an underage teen and a 19-year-old. Does that feel problematic? Or is it dealt with in a believable way? But what about how they handled it during the production? John Heard's in this, but only in the framing device. Do we even like the framing device for this film? Would it have worked without it? How about Martha Coolidge's direction? And how the heck did Renny Harlin and Mario Kasar get involved? It's an interesting film. Not one of our favorites, though even we disagree on whether it works or not. But it's worth watching and discussing for sure, so check it out then tune in.
