In 2018 Christian Zyp interviewed filmmaker Anna BIller about her second feature THE LOVE WITCH. THis interview has been re-edited to give you a look back into the past of where Anna was at and how she felt about the film at the time of its theatrical release. THE LOVE WITCH was an nearly 8 year passion project for Anna and it shows in every frame of the film. In the film Elaine (Samantha Robinson), a beautiful young witch, is determined to find a man to love her. In her gothic Victorian apartment she makes spells and potions, then picks up men and seduces them. However, her spells work too well, and she ends up with a string of hapless victims. When she at last meets the man of her dreams, her desperation to be loved drives her to the brink of insanity and murder. We discuss Anna's inspiration, her aesthetic sensibility, filming in 35 mm, why the project took so many years and more. FInd out more about Anna Biller:Instagram & X - @msannabillerGet her films and novel BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE - https://www.amazon.ca/Bluebeards-Castle-Novel-Anna-Biller/dp/1804291854

Enjoy! Send us a textIt's the season: bring on the witchy energy. These movies could be called dark romcoms, because they center romantic love in their plots, and they're often funny, but it's a corrupted or disappointing love, with witches as the main characters scrambling to find their power and the right sorcery for success, illegal illicit or otherwise. On the way to making us laugh or cry, these movies explore some fairly serious themes around domestic violence, sexual consent, cultural conditioning, emotional abuse and how the patriarchy often strives to minimize and control women's innate power. You will definitely laugh, too.https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comI guess horror comedy works too. Sex magik creates love magic, sex magik creates…Oh geez: another weird retro trailer. We continue our Camp Cinema season in our second episode covering The Love Witch (2016) and Black Swan (2010)Special Guest: Filmmakers Emily Gallagher and Austin Elston of Fishtown FIlmsAs the dust begins to settle on the 2010s, the topsy turvy decade begins to come into focus. At the start of the decade, Darren Aronofsky released Black Swan (2010) to critical acclaim. I saw it in a packed NYC theater opening weekend. The buzz was palpable. Looking back now, especially post mother! and the rise of peak tv, the trashy and overwrought elements of Black Swan overshadow the great performances and wonderful cinematography, which is why we have selected as our Naive Camp film for this episode. The Love Witch had a much quieter release in 2016, but it clicked with a small group of film lovers. While filmmaking is mostly a communal art, Anna Biller was so involved with every aspect of The Love Witch that it could only exist because of her. Biller's retro and kitsch style can not obscure the riotous passion for filmmaking and gender theory at the heart of the film. It is so campy that one could argue it is post-camp in that it is both obsessed with artifice and serious at the same time. At the very least, The Love Witch exists mostly in deviance of the ideas presented in Sontag's Notes on Camp.

She has written widely on the surrealist and occultist Ithell Colquhoun, and in 2009 she received a grant from the Paul Mellon Foundation for her research. Her biography of Colquhoun, Ithell Colquhoun: Genius of the Fern Loved Gully (2020) is widely praised, and is just one of many ways that Amy has helped amplify Ithell's impact on art and magic. Her newest book, Sex Magic: Diagrams of Love, Ithell Colquhoun is out this week from Tate Publishing, and A Walking Flame: Selected Magical Essays of Ithell Colquhoun is coming out from Strange Attractor later this year.Amy is also the editor of numerous other collections including the groundbreaking Essays on Women in Western Esotericism: Beyond Seeresses and Sea Priestesses. And she has contributed essays for Tate, Burlington Contemporary, The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and many more. She has been featured on BBC Radio Cornwall and the BBC World Service, and is a regular guest on a variety of podcasts, lecture series, and conferences including the Occult Humanities Conference at NYU. On this episode, Amy discusses the visionary art and sex magic of Ithell Colquhoun, the power of alternative depictions of divine union, and the energetic connections between color, body, and the land.Pam also talks about radical reimaginings of the lovers archetype, and answers a listener question about keeping a long-term love flame lit.Our sponsors for this episode are Ritual+Shelter, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, The Love Witch, BetterHelp, Woodland Magic, and Sphere + SundryWe also have brand new print-on-demand merch like Witch Wave shirts, sweatshirts, totes, stickers, and mugs available now here. And if you want more Witch Wave, please consider supporting us on Patreon to get access to bonus Witch Wave Plus episodes, Pam's monthly online rituals, and more! Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Rubber is a 2010 English-language French independent horror comedy film written and directed by Quentin Dupieux. The film is about a tire that comes to life and kills people with psychokinetic powers. The Love Witch is a 2016 American comedy horror film written, edited, directed, produced, and scored by Anna Biller. The film stars Samantha Robinson as Elaine Parks, a modern-day witch who uses spells and magic to get men to fall in love with her with disastrous results.

Anna Biller @msannabiller became a hero with The Love Witch a few years ago. @reunion has the pleasure of celebrating her follow up on Tuesday with a launch party for her debut novel Bluebeard's Castle. It came about as a pseudo happy accident, when pandemic stalled film development, but as Anna explains, the novel form allowed her to represent the characters' internal feelings in ways her films never allowed. The book, like Love Witch, is beyond camp. Her work is pretty peerless. We tried to find comps out there, but her mission is tall order. Lots of people do kitsch. Lots do social commentary. Lots do throwbacks. Not sure who combines these (and many more) formal influences and pursuits, in a way that entirely lands. Anna's one of my favorite thinkers period, so it's a pleasure to talk to her, and I can't wait for Tuesday.
