As Easter weekend comes to an end, Ryan posts a solo show about another intense blood-feud here in Revenge Month. Leonardo DiCaprio went through hell and finally won his Oscar while auteur Alejandro G. Iñárritu won his 4th in 2 years for their work on The Revenant, a violent, gory, grueling and beautifully-photographed survival story. There's a running theme of racism against Native Americans in here too, who are on their own vengeance quest. Tom Hardy is fantastic as Leo's antagonist, who earns the enmity of a man nearly killed by a bear after he kills that man's son. And the hunt is on. So grab your musket & your knife and eat some raw fish & even some raw liver as this lengthy monologue about The Revenant represents Have You Ever Seen #660. We're sponsored by Sparkplug Coffee. In 1875, the Gring home would host the dead bodies of four members of the Bissinger family following a murder-suicide. A mother, Louisa Bissinger, took the lives of her children in retaliation for a wrong by the father. The tragic circumstances have left the ghosts of the family to haunt this area of Berks County in Pennsylvania. And then there was Ethel Major. Her husband was an angry man and their relationship had gone sour long ago. Rather than leave her husband, she decided to make the ultimate break. And for that, she paid with her life. It seems her spirit haunts the prison where she died. Join us as we share these tragic tales that have left revenants of two bad marriages. On episode 282 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by AwardsWatch Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello as well as AwardsWatch contributors Dan Bayer, Jay Ledbetter, Josh Parham, and Karen Peterson to go back 10 years and take a look at the 88th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2015. The team take a trip back to just a decade ago where the Oscars were at a moment of reflection as the #OscarsSoWhite movement rang loudly as the nominations didn't fully show the diverse, talented artists that made the year in film so strong. Chris Rock (whose jokes this night would spark the later controversy for “The Slap” at the 2022 ceremony) hosted the ceremony and highlighted perfectly that the Academy had a long way to go to show the world that they can change and allow everyone the chance to be nominated and win an Oscar. For the telecast, it was a night dominated by Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant in the technical categories, Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning an Oscar, a cool, shocking upset in Best Visual Effects, and Spotlight winning the top prize, along with just Best Original Screenplay, making it the first film since The Greatest Show On Earth to win Best Picture while only winning one other award. In their in-depth discussion, the AW team talked about the film year of 1980, briefly discuss talk about Spotlight as a Best Picture winner, do an extensive conversation over the below the line categories and nominees for the year, and then the new version of the AW Shoulda Woulda Coulda game, where instead of individual replacements, they must decide as a group who the nominees and winners should be in the top eight categories. The rules of the game state they can only replace two of the nominees that year from each category, except in Best Picture, where the group could replace up to four films to make up the final set of eight nominated films. Like past retrospective episodes, it was a fascinating, fun conversation including spirited debates, alliances, vote swinging, celebrating various movies, performances that aren't normally talked about and more that we all hope you enjoy. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 3h14m. We will be back next week for a review of the new A24 drama, Warfare, as well as talk about some of the best war films of the decade/century so far. Till then, let's get into it. Music: “Modern Fashion” from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
Beaver Fever continues to hold sway over Legends Podcast as we visit the wintry woods of Northern Wisconsin for an ultra-indie throwback movie about an applejack brewer turned trapper who contends with the forces of nature. Directed by Mike Cheslik and starring Ryland Tews, the film draws inspiration from a myriad of sources, including the works of Abbott and Costello, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Looney Tunes, and the Three Stooges, as well as wilderness movies like The Revenant and survival role-playing video games, this black-and-white 2022 release has almost no dialogue and very little plot. Off a budget of only $150,000, it grossed over a million in limited screenings, scored a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, and has earned comparisons to the early films of Robert Rodriguez, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Sam Raimi, and Peter Jackson. Tony Hawke's Pro Skater 3 + 4 Remaster - also known as THIPS 7 - will be board sliding its way onto your Xbox this very year! And we cannot wait! Thats right, we'll soon grinding, ollie-ing, and kickflipping all over the place. And the best news is that we'll be doing it as the DOOMSLAYER! Because what's better than being Tony Hawke? Being the death machine that is the DOOMSLAYER. We can't wait to glory-kill some rails. If fighting the darkness is not your style, you can also skate away your troubles as the Revenant, proving there's something for everyone. Will the music be just as good as we remember? You better believe it! Acclaim is coming back. This will only mean something to you if you've been gaming since the late nineties, but for us older gamers, it's welcome news indeed. Will we get some new games in franchises we haven't seen singe 2001? Or will this be revived only to sell IP to Tencent? Either way, if this means we get a new Shadow-man game, then bring it on! And of course, what is a week in Xbox without being disappointed? This week, the rumor that Gears of War is going to PlayStation would be bad enough. But of course, they just have to add salt in the wound, and will be shipping the game without multiplayer! For a game that earned its cult following because of multiplayer, this is a very strange move indeed. Or this could be one giant ploy to get PlayStations gamers up to speed for when they release GoW: E-Day on the rival console as well? Either way, we aren't sure what Xbox is trying to achieve, but we do know they are pushing away some very vocal and long-term fans with these types of moves. All this and much, much more in this week's episode of The Regular Show! Make sure you've joined our Discord to take part in our amazing community events. Welcome back to the Heart of the Dominion and season 2 of my Ironsworn: Sundered Isles series. Having fled the horrible ambush on the sky island, Cassidy gets back to the Revenant just as several ships close in on the sky island for their own chance to reap the rare sky iron resources - known in the Dominion as oléthrios iron. She musters the crew and sails boldly back through the ships and meets back up with Quon to plan out the jailbreak of Damaris Iver, an Ebb Investigator currently being held in Deepwater Harbor's impenetrable dungeons... The ghosts that haunt the Collinwood estate represent the most numerous and diverse group of supernatural beings in Dark Shadows. Some spirits are helpful, offering spectral warnings in attempts to assist the living. Others are malevolent, bent on revenge… or worse. Many are tragic figures, doomed to wander the halls of Collinwood or the Old House for all eternity. Bobby Lugosi and Katherine Gonzales visit the podcast to discuss some of our favorite DS ghosts and revenants! Other discussion topics include Night of Dark Shadows, DS collectibles, and real-life ghostly encounters. Bobby Lugosi is a Rondo Award-winning monster kid influencer who runs the very popular Lugosi Theatre channel on YouTube and social media. Alva Noto—aka Carsten Nicolai—has spent decades at the forefront of experimental electronic music and multimedia art. Growing up in East Germany, his work has been shaped by the country's stark aesthetics, Leipzig's bookmaking traditions, and the GDR's Bauhaus-influenced design. In this episode, we talk about minimalism, sound as texture, the NOTON label and how his collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto (including The Revenant soundtrack) have redefined electronic music.Carsten takes us back to the late '80s and '90s—a time when electronic music was shifting from analog to digital, opening up new creative possibilities. He shares how artists like Kraftwerk and Brian Eno paved the way for his work and how embracing imperfections in technology led to the birth of glitch. We also explore how music distribution evolved from CDs to MP3s, how that shaped the way we experience sound, and what it means for artists today. Plus, Carsten reflects on his friendship with Ryuichi Sakamoto and their artistic journey together.Listen in for a deep dive into sound, technology, and the art of pushing boundaries. If you're enjoying Lost and Sound, please do subscribe and leave a rating or review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon, or wherever you listen. WHAT EXACTLY IS THE PLAN HERE. Judy and Linda discuss season 2 of "Squid Game" (오징어게임), starring Lee JungJae and Lee ByungHun. Next episode will be a First Impressions with "The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" (중증외상센터), "The Trunk" (트렁크), "When the Phone Rings" (지금 거신 전화는), and "The Queen Who Crowns" (원경). Digressions: 0:52 - Judy has finally acquired a can of pine drink (솔의눈) and we drank it! Our first attempt at ASMR! 9:08 - New Patreon donor and Listener E-mails! 17:44 - "Borderlands" movie is irredeemably awful, and Judy can't figure out who is was made for, other than the actors who were extremely bored during the pandemic. 21:12 - Gasp! Linda watched "Revenant" (악귀) starring Kim TaeRi? New horizons have opened up! 24:02 - "Gladiator II" was so disappointing. If you have such an uncharismatic lead character, who am I supposed to root for? Judy is mad that there isn't enough Pedro Pascal. 29:03 - Linda finally watched "Mister Sunshine" (미스터 션샤인) and found it to be beautiful but long. 32:40 - Judy's new dinnertime show is "White Collar", starring Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay. 34:50 - Linda watched "Blitz" starring Saoirse Ronan on Apple TV, which is excellent for historical reference but aimless as a film. 37:55 - Judy started playing "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle", and is thrilled that she gets to be the whip-cracking archaeologist. 40:47 - Linda watched Part 1 of "Alienoid" (외계+인), and found it...interesting. In a quick 1-2 punch after talking with Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist), Bryce Dessner (The National, The Revenant, The Two Popes) joins The Film Scorer podcast! Bryce released two scores last year, for the films Sing Sing and We Live In Time. However, Bryce and I were under a tight time constraint and so had to pick and choose what we chatted about; no time for a classic rambling conversation. As such, we spend much of our conversation covering his score for Sing Sing. This includes, among other things, choosing to focus the music on nature and escapism (rather than the more obvious matching of the prison setting), making space for the performers, and the film's equitable compensation system. Of course, we still manage to pack a lot in, so we cover quite a bit more as well, both about Sing Sing and various unexpected topics. Bryce's score, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms. Sing Sing was released earlier last year and will be re-released in theaters (at least in the US) on January 1. You can find out more about Bryce on his website.
This week Ebontis chats with you all around the campfire to update you on the podcast hosts and format going forward. Then we get into Destiny 2 Revenant Act 3 and the new Exotic quest. 2025 is kicking off strong with some solid January games as well as new computer hardware to get excited for. February is going to be really busy with some great games. #Podcast #TheLastWord #gaming
