We live in two dimensions. Some call this, the upper and underworld, the vertical and horizontal plane, or the conscious and unconscious realm. I call it the external and internal universe. The external universe is what is happening around you. The internal universe is what is happening in you. This Sunday, I want to share about my trips to my internal universe. By doing so, I hope to inspire you to take your own journey. Maybe we will come to find the words of Jospeh Campbell to be true; “The very cave you are afraid to enter, turns out to be the source of what you are looking for.”
“Always you will find that within you the shadow and the light go together… It is up to you to know how to utilize the one to realize the other.” -Sri AurobindoEach of us is called to change, mature, and take responsibility for our conscious evolution. A central task in psychological development is recognition and integration of the shadow. And this is where the concepts and the jargon begin to obscure understanding, right? The Persian tale of Abu Kasem's Slipper's is a humorous story that can shed some light on Aurobindo's teaching and the problem of the psychological shadow. I hope you find value in the story.Support the show
How do we integrate the intense experiences of psychedelic therapy for long term benefits? Can we apply those learnings to existential exploration in general? In this episode we have the fascinating topic of ‘psychedelic integration' to get our head around. Integration is a crucial part of any psychotherapy process, but perhaps even more so when those suffering experience psychedelic compounds in their treatment program. Many subjects of the new psychedelic treatments for depression and ADHD, have life changing experiences that often go against everything they have come to believe about themselves and the world. So regardless of how positive that can be to the meaning of their lives, it's clear that some pretty sensitive guidance and processing needs to take place for the therapy to shift their day to day life long-term. And interestingly the same tools we'll discuss can be used for all of us to navigate our own existential exploration. So who better to help us explain this and offer some tools for navigating these tricky experiences than clinical psychologist and author Dr. Kile Ortigo. Kile is the founder of the Center for Existential Exploration in Palo Alto California; he's hugely influenced by psychologist Carl Jung and Jospeh Campbell and specialises in treating trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and addiction, with a particular sensitivity to gender identity issues. He's just written a book about the topic Beyond the Narrow Life: A Guide for Psychedelic Integration and Existential Exploration What we discuss in this episode: 00:00 Intro 06:00 Integration in therapy 09:44 Integration of psychedelic experiences 12:13 Preparation for the unknown - Kile's new book ‘Psychedelic integration' 17:00 Re-finding initiation; analogy with preparation 21:00 The risks of self-initiation 23:25 Is meaning built into existence? 28:00 Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey 31:30 The symbolism of the battles in the myths 34:00 The shadow - ‘a moral problem' Jung 35:00 Monomyth is a misnoma 38:00 The Heroine's journey - Maureen Murdoch 41:30 MDMA therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder 43:45 Preparation - medicine journey - integration; 3 Arcs 46:00 The risk of re-trauma if the patient is not prepared 49:45 The rewards from existential exploration and integration 54:00 The exciting mystery of the unknown - making friends with the unknown References: Kile's new Book Beyond the Narrow Life: A Guide for Psychedelic Integration and Existential Exploration, 'The Shadow' according to Jung Collective Unconscious episode #6 Individuation according to C.G.Jung Jospeh Campbell's Hero's Journey episode
In today's episode, I talk about dark nights of the soul. Specifically, what they are, how to navigate them, my stories, what I have learned, and tips and tricks for moving through these seasons of life. Dark night of the soul is a part of a process coined by Jospeh Campbell called “the Hero's Journey”. It is the traveling and navigations of the life of the “hero” archetype who is claiming their life and freedom. It is a circular process, an evolution that this person goes through to find themselves. The hero claims and continues to reclaim their life. They are waking up to their power and truth, The dark night of the soul is a moment of darkness that exists in the process of returning home to yourself. These seasons of life are TEMPORARY. Some people live in this space, but YOU a conscious, evolved being working on themselves need to know that you will move through this. It can be really hard to anchor into this realization as we can get lost in the darkness, but please know this is temporary. You may feel depressed, detached, or like your world is falling apart. You may fear that it will never go away. I like to look at dark nights as rattlings and recalibrations. Our worlds feel stressed and intense, but at the same time we are recalibrating into our highest self and everything coming up in our dark night is here to be released. If things feel heavy, please do not be hard on yourselves. Often times, our dark night times bring out the emotions we hold back. Be able to experience the process without the self bullying. We shouldn't be afraid of low vibrations, they will go away once we learn the lesson. You will look back on this experience with love and appreciation for the lessons you learn in your dark night. There is a term often used by screenwriters, authors, and playwrights to describe a scene where a character's life seems to be at an all-time low. Everything seems to be going wrong, and the character may have even lost hope. These scenes are called 'the belly of the whale.' Jospeh Campbell, a literary professor, is credited with coining this term as a nod to the story of Jonah. You and I know, even if you take the story literally, it wasn't a whale that swallowed Jonah, but the term still is used to describe the moments in life when everything seems dark and maybe a little stinky. These dark moments feel like being inside of a fish! We’ve all been there, haven't we? We've all been in seasons of life that feel hopeless...a time when our next move isn't clear. This week, we're going to join Jonah in the belly of the fish as he tries to figure out what is next. When you really dig into the story, Jonah weaves together a couple of psalms to create a beautiful prayer that he offers up as a way to both reconnect with God and soothe himself. Join Pastor Sarah as we ask the question, "How can we find hope in the belly of the whale? And, how can we authentically be present to others when they have their own whale moments?" Sometimes, we miss the richness of this story, because we get caught up in its absurd nature.
Jospeh Campbell observes that every good story has common characteristics that make it compelling. He calls those common characteristics the Hero’s Journey. For the hero to become the hero they must first step away from home or the comfortable. For the character to become more than just a flat, unmoving person they have to be […] The post Episode 35 | Smashing Idols and Kissing Santa Claus Goodbye appeared first on Tony Wuerfel.
