In this episode, Michael Meade explores how when the world seems to make no sense, myth can make the most sense. Stories of renewal of the Earth can help us see the world with different eyes and create new contexts for facing the threats of climate change and stopping ecological degradation. Myth has a redeeming function as stories become vessels of imagination and inspiration that can open new ways to see the world.     Imagination has a way of lighting on truths that reason cannot find. Imagination can reveal inner dimensions and hidden resources in our individual and collective lives and in the world. Back in 1988, CBS gave us Garfield: His 9 Lives, an anthology special where our favorite lasagna enthusiast got to be a caveman, a pampered Egyptian god-cat, and an honest-to-goodness astronaut fending off an interstellar war fleet. Ambitious! Mythic, even! Then in 2006, Lucky Jump Games and The Game Factory looked at that legacy, borrowed the exact same title for a Game Boy Advance platformer, and said: actually, what if his nine lives were a farm, a haunted house, a circus, a sewer, a tree, an alley, an obedience school, and a lab? No pyramids. No space combat. Just Garfield, freshly stuffed from an eating binge, suffering eight increasingly damp nightmares about locations you could reach on foot from his own kitchen. Climbing out of Garfield's nightmare to help us survey the damage is Derek B Gayle, who hosts or co-hosts what feels like an ever-multiplying stable of shows including Walloping Websnappers, Gimmicks, Skreeonk!, and, at this point, so many other podcasts that keeping an accurate list may violate several laws of podcast physics. If Garfield hates Mondays, Derek looked at that same feeling and apparently decided the correct response was to start four more podcasts to fill the time. Liz, a person who has a legitimate phobia of snakes, is rather emphatically not enjoying the Coiled Isle. Now that she's had time with the patch, she can confirm that she hates it. Some areas are less snakey than others, and those are okay, but Blizzard is not her favorite set of people just now. She did admit to enjoying the green, though. Luckily, she can experience the whole thing vicariously as the Race to World First kicked off this week with the beginning of MidnightSseason 2, and the opening of the Mythic version of the Venomous Abyss raid. Several of the teams are raising money for charity through the race, including a fun one from Liquid where if you donate a certain amount, they'll post your pet's photo on stream. "When the world seems to lose all sense and meaning, it is usually 'mythic sense' that is missing," says Michael Meade in talking about the vital language of myth. Without a sense of mythic imagination, the world can seem more random and be more overwhelming. Myth is not about the facts of the matter, but about what matters most to us. He suggests that myth is the inside story of the world we live in, and we are each and all mythic by nature.     Hearing a story awakens the mythic story living in each of us and places us in a "mythic condition" that reconnects us to the core imagination and living story at the center of our soul. Gaius reveals that gladiators were intentionally chubby to "bleed better" for the audience and suffered from bad breath due to a meatless diet, highlighting that many were actually volunteers seeking money, and that animal hunts were often more popular than death matches. He shares a poignant account of elephants in the arena begging the crowd for their lives, which led Romans to acknowledge their intelligence. Germanicus explains gladiatorial combat as a "ritual" for citizens to reconnect with their "mythic heroic past" now that they no longer serve in the legions, defending the "chubby" physique by noting that body fat was essential for the survival of both Hannibal's soldiers and elephants during Alpine crossings. What makes a story feel truly mythic? Many writers assume mythic fiction comes from borrowing archetypes, retelling old myths, or layering symbolic imagery into a story. While there is immense value in studying mythology, fairy tales, folklore, and archetypal storytelling traditions, something important has been lost in many modern conversations about mythic fiction. The old myths aren't powerful merely because of their plot structure or symbolism. They are powerful because they emerged from their creator's living relationship with symbol, transformation, mystery, dream, and the deeper psyche. Decided to run a little solo show this month. We did have a guest scheduled but they needed a little more time to work on things there side and to be honest though I'm kinda glad The guest shows take a lot more time to prepare that most realise, and not only that but because I'm often chasing my own ass trying to get things done in time I started to loose sight of the basic art behind all this and started to become frequently stressed over it. This show reminded me why more freestyles mixes and less pre-programming is also essential to stay skilled with. I would worry like crazy thinking if i didn't put days or nights into the playlist that it would surely just turn out a bit shit, but its really not the case. Its exhausting and not sustainable to be the way I have been and I would have ended up hating the process and quitting in the long run. So yeah long story short, I'm real happy with this month's show despite slightly going off my goal of releasing 12 guest shows within each month of the year.
