“The overarching message that I think Sean has with this book is that whatever ‘it' is, go for it. If this is your thing and you give it all you've got and don't limit yourself to what's been done and what's been possible, the sky's the limit on what you can do.” Today's guest is someone whose work has shaped how we understand running at its most human level through writing about running. Chris Lear is the author of Running with the Buffalos, a book that for many is the gold standard of distance running storytelling. Two decades ago, Chris embedded himself with the University of Colorado's cross country team during one of its most dramatic seasons, and what turned out was a story of triumph, tragedy, and relentless pursuit that became a cult classic for runners everywhere. Now Chris is back with one of the most anticipated running books: Beyond Fast - the story of coach Sean Brosnan. It's written with Sean Brosnan and NBC News' Andrew Greif.Brosnan's journey is an unlikely one from BMX tracks on Long Island to the world of collegiate running and eventually to Newbury Park High School, where he transformed a struggling program into a dynasty. During his six years there, Brosnan didn't just build champions; he built what many believe was the greatest high school cross country team of all time. His impact went beyond workouts and race results; he created a culture that challenged young athletes to push past their limits and reimagine what was possible. In this conversation, we talk with Chris about the stories behind Beyond Fast and how a coach with a renegade spirit changed the sport of high school distance running.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Chris LearProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on InstagramMentioned in this episode…Pre-order: Beyond Fast: How a Renegade Coach and His Unlikely High School Team Revolutionized Distance RunningOrder: Running with the Buffaloes: A Season Inside With Mark Wetmore, Adam Goucher, And The University Of Colorado Men's Cross Country Team____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Straight out of Bikini Bottom, Olipop's limited edition SpongeBob cans have arrived. The email said, “I talked my spouse into going to therapy.” Another one asked, “How do I drag my spouse to therapy?” Oof. The first person was proud of the “convincing.” The second person got my response: You Don't! (Unless, of course, you want to damn the process from the very beginning… and in that case, drag away!) Marriage therapy tends to be the default response to a marriage crisis (although the stats would not support this as the preferred action). If there is a problem, time to head to therapy! First task: get a spouse there. By pressure, if necessary. I think there is a (false) belief that if you can just get them there, the therapist will work some magic and convince the spouse to work on the marriage. The therapist won't/can't. And your spouse won't. Fail/fail. But why? There are some Therapy Traps that you fall into when you try to drag a spouse into therapy (I cover the Traps in the podcast episode below). And in the process, you actually cause further entrenchment on the part of your spouse that things won't work out. Yep, it makes things worse. I explain why in this episode of the Save The Marriage Podcast. Listen below. RELATED RESOURCES Therapy Problems Can You Save It Alone? Can Your Marriage Even Be Saved? There are many reasons why someone may require a third-trimester abortion, including both fetal implications and maternal implications (such as health diagnoses and difficult life circumstances). Dr. Shelley Sella, retired OB-GYN, first woman to openly provide third-trimester abortion care in the U.S., and author of Beyond Limits: Stories of Third-Trimester Abortion Care, sits down to share her expertise, discuss the multitude of reasons why someone seeks a third-trimester abortion, and touch on the personal stories shared in the book.Dr. Sella became involved in the women's health movement in college, which eventually sent her to medical school to begin her journey studying to be an OB-GYN. Dr. Sella was mentored by Dr. George Tiller, who provided late term abortions and who was assassinated in Kansas in 2009. Beyond Limits follows Dr. Sella during a week at the abortion clinic, sharing stories of patients requiring third-trimester abortions for a myriad of reasons. She holds a degree in Chemistry and Management from Marietta College, an MBA from Northeastern University, an advanced certificate in Strategic Human Resource Management from Cornell University, and an SPHR certification. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Susannah Robinson discuss:Rethinking organizational design beyond org chartsAligning jobs, structure, and practices with strategyHiring for competencies instead of loyaltyUsing AI to streamline HR and job designDriving change through small, intentional actions Key Takeaways:Organizational design is most effective when leaders integrate job roles, structural elements, and employee practices in alignment with the company's goals, values, and strategy.Rather than reacting habitually to personnel changes or market shifts, leaders should pause to ask if a better structural solution exists before simply filling a vacancy.Designing from a future state—by clarifying strategic objectives and desired outcomes—enables organizations to build more adaptive and purpose-driven structures.Culture becomes a product of intentional organizational choices, where structure, roles, and workflows reinforce the mission and create alignment across all levels. Matthew Bates joins us today to work out salvation. What is it? What have we got wrong? In our contemporary moment, we find ourselves wrestling with a profound misunderstanding of the gospel - a narrative that has been truncated, individualized, and stripped of its royal, communal essence. The gospel is not merely a personal transaction about individual salvation, but a comprehensive royal announcement about Jesus the Christ. For too long, both Protestant and Catholic traditions have inadvertently narrowed the expansive biblical vision of salvation. We've reduced faith to mental assent or ritualistic practice, when in reality, faith is fundamentally about allegiance - a comprehensive, embodied loyalty to King Jesus that transforms not just individuals, but entire communities and, ultimately, all of creation. Matthew seeks to recover a more holistic understanding. We are saved not just from something, but for something: the full restoration of our image-bearing capacity, the renewal of God's glory in and through us. This isn't about personal spiritual escapism, but about participating in a cosmic restoration project. In our conversation today, we'll explore how reimagining salvation as allegiance can bridge denominational divides, challenge our narcissistic cultural assumptions, and invite us into a more profound understanding of discipleship. We're not just talking about theological abstractions, but about a transformative way of being in the world. Prepare to have your understanding of the gospel radically expanded. Matthew W. Bates is Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary. His books have won top honors from Christianity Today, Outreach Magazine, Jesus Creed, and Englewood Review. When he isn't hiking, baseballing, or chasing his seven children, he co-hosts the OnScript podcast. A Protestant by conviction, Bates holds a PhD in theology (New Testament) from the University of Notre Dame. His popular titles include Salvation by Allegiance Alone, Why the Gospel?, The Gospel Precisely, and The Birth of the Trinity. He lives with his family in Quincy, Illinois. “Amazing Amy” meets “Awkwardly-Smiling Affleck” in Fincher's darkly comic masterpiece - an instant classic from that first shot of Rosamund Pike's pretty head. The delightful Esther Zuckerman (who will definitely NOT “gone girl” her boyfriend) joins us to discuss this impressive work of adaptation. We're asking all the big questions - is “Amazing Amy” actually a good children's book? Did Tyler Perry take any directing tips from David Fincher when he made BOO! A MADEA HALLOWEEN? Would this movie work as well with Reese Witherspoon and Jon Hamm as the two leads? Why haven't we gone long on the career of one Benjamin G. Affleck yet? “I hope people feel a different perspective on life after reading my book,” says Howell. “I inject a lot of philosophy and satire into my work. I consider myself an absurdist, which is basically a nihilist with a goofy mustache. My concoctions offer a made-up world so people can be happy and feel free to debate the ideas put forth in my work. I love to engage the reader with humor.”“I've always been creating and making art,” says Howell. “In elementary school, I doodled in class and did not take notes. Schoolmates weighed in on how I should develop the characters and storylines. I love consuming and sharing stories, and to express myself in a very visual medium is great for getting certain ideas across.”Howell was discovered by his employer, Pencilmation, an online cartoon channel, after it saw his popular Jolly Biscuit comic drawings. He now storyboards for cartoons geared to children ages 6-12.

How do we integrate the intense experiences of psychedelic therapy for long term benefits? Can we apply those learnings to existential exploration in general? In this episode we have the fascinating topic of ‘psychedelic integration' to get our head around. Integration is a crucial part of any psychotherapy process, but perhaps even more so when those suffering experience psychedelic compounds in their treatment program. Many subjects of the new psychedelic treatments for depression and ADHD, have life changing experiences that often go against everything they have come to believe about themselves and the world. So regardless of how positive that can be to the meaning of their lives, it's clear that some pretty sensitive guidance and processing needs to take place for the therapy to shift their day to day life long-term. And interestingly the same tools we'll discuss can be used for all of us to navigate our own existential exploration. So who better to help us explain this and offer some tools for navigating these tricky experiences than clinical psychologist and author Dr. Kile Ortigo. Kile is the founder of the Center for Existential Exploration in Palo Alto California; he's hugely influenced by psychologist Carl Jung and Jospeh Campbell and specialises in treating trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and addiction, with a particular sensitivity to gender identity issues. Ever since I was a kid, my dream had been to make it big in Hollywood. After college, in 1994, I got an internship working on the Clio Awards (an awards show for the best commercials) and a couple of music videos (including a Muppets music video!). Then I got more gigs on other TV shows. I thought my dream was coming true. But I learned something during those first couple of years working in Hollywood: If I was going to succeed in Hollywood, I would have to make Hollywood my number one priority in life. I just wasn't ready to do that. I had developed a deep love for God through the college campus ministry I had been involved in. I wanted to stay involved in my church. But I could see that Hollywood was going to take more and more of my time and energy. So, I quit Hollywood. It was the hardest thing I'd ever done. It felt like I was throwing away a part of myself. That was in the summer of 1996. In this episode I talk about my podcast and/or my book (Beyond Thingification: Helping Your Church Engage in God's Mission) and my experience of being falsely accused at my last church and finding transformation through that experience. Randy Shaw is the co-founder of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, author of five books, and has been one of the Bay Area's leading community organizers on tenants' rights, housing, and homelessness for the past 40 years. Randy, in short, is a fountain of knowledge and knows what works when it comes to solving one the nation's most pressing problems. In this episode, Wayne and Randy explore the roots of the Bay Area's--and the nation's--housing crisis. They look into past ballot measures, California politics, policies, and voting behaviors that have shaped our current housing predicament. They talk about taxation, Joe Biden's housing plan, Obama's political failures, the power of grassroots local activism, and what ordinary people can do to create change. Randy also answers the key question: how can we end homelessness in the U.S., for good? “Don't be distracted by all the noise.” “We need to keep people connected to the issues and fighting AFTER the election.” The Tenderloin Housing Clinic in San Francisco Randy's Book – Beyond the Fields: Cesar Chavez, the UFW, and the Struggle for Justice in the 21st Century Randy's Book – The Tenderloin: Sex, Crime and Resistance in the Heart of San Francisco Randy's new Book – Generation Priced Out Randy's Book – The Activist Handbook Music by Moby: Everything That Rises

In this episode, Danielle and Maggie chat with Matthias Roberts, the author of Beyond Shame and the host of the Queerology: A Podcast about Belief and Being. He holds a M.A. in Theology and Culture and a M.A. in Counseling Psychology, both from the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology where he is also an associate instructor. He is Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate (LMHCA) in the state of Washington and specializes in LBGTQ+ trauma and faith. His new book, Beyond Shame, is written for anyone who grew up in under the purity movement—rigid rules about sexuality. US was founded on Puritanical ideals and we're just now beginning to see how harmful in the ways we've been policing bodies. How do we work with that our sexual shame and move beyond shame towards confident flouring lives and sexuality?Matthias says we first need to recognize what you're working with: acknowledge that the shame you feel. See the ways we are trying to cope with our shame.Three coping mechanisms that we use to deal/avoid with shame:Shame Full-ness: We let shame rule our lives and sexuality. We push it down and hide it, do not express it. Shame less-ness: Let our “freedom” rule over our shame, we do whatever we want. We're running away from shame, instead of dealing with it. Auto-pilot: Either we've done our shame work, or do not have as much sexual shame (grown up in sex positive environment), but when sexuality pops up we feel shame and because it's not pervasive enough we don't engage it. Once we know what coping mechanisms are at play we can ask ourselves, “If this is the shape of my shame, what can I then do to start working with it in a honest way.“Good intentions” can not be an escape from working with your shame. We can acknowledge good intentions, like when mom says “don't look” when a woman is on the tv screen. We don't want to over sexualize our kids, so there is goodness in that. But when you're body starts to have biological responses and you really want to look at this, cognitive dissonance happens. When the only messages that you've been told is “You are dirty, you are bad. God will hate you if you enjoy looking…” Thats where shame gets mixed in.There's a both and. You can say that “my parents really were doing the best that they could” and “I'm still left with debilitating shame.” Honesty is that both of these are true. “We can be messed up with good intentions."Matthias hopes that people will find themselves among the chapters. Coping mechanisms have helped us get through life. “When someone puts language to what you know to be very true in your body… it can be really uncomfortable but also feel really freeing." There's a different way to live! We no longer have to live out of our coping mechanisms, we can live out of groundedness and what our actual values are, which is much more satisfying. We need a faith that can move in these space (in our sexuality and our shame). We shouldn't have to reject our faith in order to navigate honestly. His book arose out of a personal question—he found the things he had been taught about sex and sexuality didn't seem to be working. For example, sex outside of marriage. He kept seeing people of deep faith operating in different ways. Personal longing: what are these other pope seeing that I don't and how do I apply that to what I have been taught. Who do I believe God is? Is God a God of freedom? A god who invites us to flouring within our relationships, bodies and sexuality? Is it this rigid one-size fits all model or is there space for people to have different values about their bodies and sexuality?“God is so much bigger than what I was taught. God is not in the business of making moralistic black and white rules…. I don't think that's who God is.” God is complex and so are we!Sexuality is a hot button for people. Race too. It's a topic that's been glossed over. The complexity has not been address in either. We as a culture have an issue with embodiment. When we gloss over the complexities, it says a lot about who we are as particular bodies, particular people who live in particular environments. One size fits all is literally impossible, it does not work. There needs to be a curiosity about why we are so disembodied. How can we engage our faith and sexuality by bringing the fullness of our humanity. Are we fearfully and wonderfully made or are we not?Do I believe that about me and do I believe that about you?Matthias started his podcast Queerology three years ago with a desire to engage the intersection of being LBGTQ and a person of faith. He wanted to address the question: What does it mean to live faithfully, to live well, as LBGTQ people of faith? It was a movement beyond the question can I be gay and be a person of faith. It's conversations around queerness and “what we believe and what we're doing in the world.” He talks about how faith informs work as a queer person.March 24th launches season 4!Matthias describes what it means to be Queer: it uses “queer” to be an umbrella term. Anyone who falls outside of a hetero-world (one man one women), who identifies as “different” but doesn't want a strict label. “I sit in a space of difference” which allows everyone their own particular story. To support Matthias work and Queerology you can go to paetron.com/matthiasrobertsWithin the state of Washington you can reach out to him for therapy work. He offers intensive weekends also. He has resources as well for being queer and a person of faith. The New LinkedIn interface is daunting to many, but it doesn't have to be. On this episode I've invited Brynne Tillman, Chief Learning Officer at PeopleLinx to guide us through the changes on LinkedIn and to teach us how to use the platform to its full potential. Brynne and the team at PeopleLinx guide sales teams to leverage LinkedIn, social selling, and other digital tools to gain access to targeted buyers, shorten the sales cycle, and close more business. Brynne's background in sales and sales training translates into the social selling realm in a way that the teams she coaches don't just learn the tactics of social. They learn the high-level strategies that enable them to master listening, learning, attracting, teaching, and converting online activity into meaningful phone calls. You're going to love this conversation. Are you guilty of random acts of social selling? Most salespeople are guilty of random acts of social selling - but it's really not selling at all. Posting a few articles, sharing a few pieces of content, or liking somebody's post doesn't do anything to generate leads or sales. The point of social media is to BE SOCIAL, which means building real relationships with your target buyers. On this episode, Brynne shares intentional strategies for using the new LinkedIn UI to establish and build the relationships that lead to conversations, phone calls, and sales. She's an expert in regards to LinkedIn for social selling, so make sure you listen, learn, and apply what she's got to share. The new changes to LinkedIn. Should you be afraid? Anytime a familiar software platform changes its interface users are hesitant to embrace the changes. But Brynne says that the changes the LinkedIn team has made lately, especially as they relate to the functionality of Sales Navigator, make it easier for sales leaders to build the relationships that lead to sales. But you have to know what you're doing in order to experience good results. On this episode, Brynne shares what TO do on the new LinkedIn UI and what NOT to do - all with a view toward making you more effective at nurturing prospects and building your client base. You have GOT to hear her practical tips. How LinkedIn's Sales Navigator is like a gym membership. In this conversation with Brynne, I asked whether she believes that the cost of LinkedIn's Sales Navigator is a good ROI for sales leaders. Her response was that it's similar to a gym membership - if you buy it but don't use it, Sales Navigator won't do you a bit of good. If you buy it and use it wrongly, you could be worse off than when you started. But if you take the time to learn the platform and use it based on advice from the experts, you'll see a huge result in a short amount of time. Find out how Brynne suggests you go about learning the new LinkedIn Sales Navigator tools, on this episode of #SellingWithSocial. How do you measure the success of a social selling campaign? Most sales leaders don't know what they are shooting for when it comes to their use of social. They share things, like others' posts, and hope for good responses. But an effective social selling strategy has to have clear KPIs (key performance indicators) in view and tangible ways to measure them. When you approach social selling with that kind of intentionality, you're actually going to build relationships instead of wasting your time - and it's those relationships that lead to sales. On this episode, Brynne outlines the things that need to be a part of your social selling strategy, so make sure you listen. Outline of This Episode [1:22] My introduction of Brynne Tillman.
