Welcome to episode 18 of Overthunk! Today we get to chat with the one and only Ophira Eisenberg about a potpourri of things that cause us stress and anxiety and had a blast! Ophira is a standup comic and host of NPR's nationally syndicated comedy, trivia show Ask Me Another among other things… She's also on a new first of it's kind show, Up Early Tonight on HULU, she's an author, a mom, and can be seen on any number of comedy shows, benefits, podcasts… I mean I don't think she sleeps… I wish I had that energy. I like to say yes to lots of things too but then… reality sets in and my overthinking and anxiety kick up and say “why did you do this!?” Anyway… we had a lot of fun talking about the stress of not being able to find a bathroom, pronouncing people's names and I make the mistake of asking do we really need to wear deodorant if we're not leaving the house? Want to share something you're overthinking or anxious about? Leave us a message and we just might feature it in an upcoming episode!! https://anchor.fm/overthunk/message Hope you enjoy this as much as we did! Karen's is a story of persistence, wisdom, and a divine sense of humor, and we're so excited to be sharing this story with you.
As we continue to interview more fabulous women, we were thrilled to have Comedian and Author Karen Bergreen. NYC born and bred, with a Harvard undergraduate and University of Minnesota law degrees, Karen is one of the most sought out Emcees in NYC. We talked about what made her decide to follow the underground world of stand-up comedy, after having clerked for a Judge in the above ground world and how getting married, having kids-one looking at colleges-has changed her life and act. Somehow Karen found time to author two books "Following Polly" and "Perfect is Overrated" and is currently working on a 3rd novel. for more on Karen go to: https://www.karenbergreen.com/
The buzz: “Over the centuries human beings have always loved to laugh. We can imagine jokes being shared by our cave dwelling ancestors about the two woolly mammoths. Today comedy is shared with vast audience by world-famous arena-filling comedians. Comedy is part of human culture. “There seems to be more comedy than ever. There are local comedy clubs, the Edinburgh Fringe, YouTube, comedy series and Hollywood movies – however you like your comedy served up, there is probably a source catering to your taste. “Still some key challenges…for all but the very top tier of acts to make a living…comedy has always lingered slightly in music's shadow in terms of new media – lagging behind embracing digital platforms.” (Sarah Henley, co-founder of NextUp, www.tvbeurope.com/features/what-impact-might-technology-have-on-comedy We'll ask Eddie Sarfaty, Lori Hammel, Peter Michael Marino and Karen Bergreen for their take on “What's So Funny?!? If you’ve been following me on Instagram or get my newsletter, you might know that I recently took stand up comedy classes here in NYC at Manhattan Comedy School. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. It scared the heck out of me...so naturally, I had to try it. My next performance is TONIGHT at Gotham Comedy Club at 7pm, actually. And so I thought who better to have on So Money today than my comedy school teacher, comic Karen Bergreen. Over the past decade, Karen has been keeping audiences laughing all across the country. She’s been on Comedy Central, the Oxygen Network, VH1, The View, and LIVE at Gotham. She’s also an author of two fiction books, Perfect is Overrated and Following Polly: A Novel. She and I talk about the highs and lows of being a female stand up comic, growing up in New York City when people *didn’t* want to be labeled as “rich.”..and Karen’s transition to comedy...She graduated from Harvard, and went on to law school. How and why she pivoted is where we begin the conversation... To learn more about Karen, visit KarenBergreen.com or find her on Twitter @KarenBergreen.
